After a four-day delay, the Directors Guild of America has finished announcing this year’s TV nominees, includng Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television Dramatic Series; Comedy Series; and Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Specials for 2019.
With all of the categories in, Amazon Prime Video’s “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” now ties FX’s “Fosse/Verdon” for most nominations, with three apiece. “Maisel” scored noms in the comedy category for directors Dan Attias, Amy Sherman Palladino and Daniel Palladino.
The Palladinos also faced off in the comedy directing category last year, which was ultimately won by Bill Hader — who’s back this year as well. Rounding out the category is “Veep” showrunner David Mandel, nominated for directing that show’s finale.
On the drama side, the category is completely dominated by HBO, which earned every nod. That included two for “Watchmen,” for directors Nicole Kassell and Stephen Williams. “Game of Thrones” also received two nominations,...

Jillian Bell and Isla Fisher are likely practicing to say “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo,” as the two actresses are set to star in a feature film comedy about fairy godmothers for Disney+ called “Godmothered,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Sharon McGuire, who directed the rom-com classic “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” will direct the comedy from a script by Kari Granlund and Melissa Stack.
In “Godmothered,” Bell plays a young and inexperienced fairy godmother who tries to prove her worth by seeking out a young girl whose request for a fairy godmother was ignored. We live in an era where 80s franchises can never truly die. The classic team is reprising their roles for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Steven Spielberg is still planning to make Indiana Jones 5, and we’re even getting Bill & Ted Face The Music in 2020. But one franchise has been on ice and seems unlikely to return anytime soon: Back to the Future.
Of course, over the years, there’ve been hints at either a Back to the Future 4 or (more likely) a reboot of the concept. There were rumors that there was a great spec script for a new sequel floating around Hollywood in the mid-2010s that’d have seen a young African-American actor sent back in time thirty years from 2015 to 1985 (the ‘present’ of the original movie). But sadly, that came to nothing, with producer Frank Marshall explaining:
“Yeah [we won’t reboot Back To The Future], as long as I have my say.

As one of the most popular stars in the movie business, one that’s enjoying a huge career renaissance after a recent string of critical and commercial hits, Keanu Reeves is arguably more in demand now than at any other point in his decades-long Hollywood career.
In 2019 alone, the 55 year-old has starred in the hugely successful third installment in the John Wick franchise, voiced a character in Pixar’s billion-dollar smash Toy Story 4, sent himself up twice thanks to cameo appearances in Netflix comedies Always Be My Maybe and Between Two Ferns: The Movie, and even popped up in the trailer for the next Spongebob Squarepants movie.
Next up on the slate for the actor is long-awaited sequel Bill & Ted Face the Music, which sees him returning as Theodore ‘Ted’ Logan for the first time since 1991’s Bogus Journey. After that, Reeves will move on to another belated sequel...

All of the films that have been made about the infamous Amityville house have focused on the creepy horrific ghost stories that surround it after the murders that took place there. This new film, The Amityville Murders, will focus on the story of the family that was murdered in the house prior to the hauntings.
On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took a high-powered rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed that “voices” in the house commanded him to kill. This is their story.
The prequel to the haunting of the Amityville home comes from writer and director Daniel Farrand, who has directed several horror-inspired documentaries, such as Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th, Scream: The Inside Story, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, The Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited, The Fear Is Real: Reinvestigating the Haunting...

Long before the #MeToo movement had a name, documentary filmmaker Jennifer Fox was working on The Tale. The film, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before making its way to HBO on May 26, is the devastating true story of the sexual abuse she experienced as a 13-year-old girl. Starring Laura Dern as adult Fox, Isabelle Nélisse as the director at 13 years old, and Jason Ritter as her abuser, The Tale is a searing depiction of rape and the ways in which abuse can impact someone's life without them even realizing it.
The Tale is Fox's first narrative film, and it serves as a memoir of sorts, as well as a graphic depiction of what sex abuse can look like from a child's perspective. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a few difficult scenes in the film showing acts of abuse led some audience members to walk...

Andrea Riseborough stars in a new Hollywood reboot of The Grudge, with Nicolas Pesce as writer and director.
The Grudge successfully struck when the Japanese horror genre iron was – appropriate to its ghostly threats – white-hot in the wake of the American remake of The Ring, this time starring a genre favorite in TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar. The 2004 film, which saw director Takashi Shimizu remake his 2002 Japanese horror flick, Ju-on: The Grudge, yielded two sequels, which arrived successively in 2006 and 2009.
Now, a reboot movie of The Grudge is coming from Ghost House Pictures from director Nicolas Pesce.

A new Red Band trailer for The Grudge reboot has arrived (via IGN), showcasing Lin Shaye in a creepy performance opposite star Andrea Riseborough, that, even based on what we see here, stands out as a nightmarish offering in its own right.

Riz Ahmed, “The Night Of”
The British actor had a small role in “Nightcrawler” on the big screen, but he makes a huge splash on HBO’s anthology drama as Nasir “Naz” Khan, the young man whose night out with a captivating woman goes awry when he discovers her stabbed and he’s accused of her murder. Ahmed is hypnotic in his stillness and silences, but one look at his expressive eyes, and it’s clear that Naz is taking everything in as he learns to navigate the world of prison politics and legal strategy. One can’t help to root for him because he’s clearly innocent… isn’t he? Therein lies Ahmed’s genius, his ability to play both sides so that the viewer oscillates between sympathy and dread that we have gotten it wrong. We can’t wait to see what he does in the Star Wars universe for “Rogue One.

Burt Reynolds has seen both sides of America, and he stands at the center of a great divide. Shortly before Hillary Clinton announced her second presidential campaign, Reynolds joined her and Bill for a high school football game in Arkansas. The actor has deep roots in the state, where he’d shot the early ’90s show “Evening Shade” and the 1973 rural action drama “White Lightning.” In the audience with the Clintons, Reynolds found himself witnessing a very different country from the fast-paced world of entertainment figures and political pundits.
“Nobody paid much attention to us,” said Reynolds, 80, during a recent conversation in Key West, Florida. “It was a hell of a lot of fun. I love Bill. Mrs. Clinton and I had a lot of laughs. I had never that experience any place, before or since.” The crowd was respectful but ambivalent about the famous faces in the room. “It was important to them,...

From Flushed Away and Hunchback to Titan A.E. and Sky High - the family movies that don't get the love they deserve...
When I sit through a film such as Zootropolis, Rango, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Eddie The Eagle or Coraline, I can’t help but be thankful somebody has bothered. As a parent as well as a movie lover, I’ve grown to really dislike family movies that just turn up to act as a surrogate babysitter for 90 minutes, with no intention of becoming anybody’s favourite film. The films I'm going to talk about are the family movies therefore that I think both try and do something a bit more, yet continue to fly under many people's radar.
A bonus mention before we get going, and number 26 in the list, much to my surprise: Alvin & The Chipmunks 4. I was expecting next to zero from it, courtesy...

Should there be a 'ground zero' of knowledge for movie criticism? And what makes a critic effective at their job?
When I sat down to watch It Follows for the first time at the start of last year, I had no idea what I was getting. I'm increasingly an avoider of trailers, and try as much as possible to see films cold. It doesn't always work, but in the case of It Follows, it very much did.
As I’ve written before, the film had a very primal effect on me, in that it had me backing further and further into my seat, genuinely unnerved and more than a little scared by what was happening on screen. I hadn't felt like that watching a film for a long time, and my eventual write-up reflected that. Aside from the subtexts of the movie, which I, in truth, only came to later,...

The Aliens, from the producers of Misfits, is raucous fun with a social message. Here’s what to expect from E4’s new sci-fi comedy…
Whenever humans imagine being invaded by an alien race, it’s pretty much always a big deal. Flying saucers land and what follows are mind-blowing technological developments, intergalactic war, the White House being evaporated, or Sarah Jessica Parker’s head winding up on a Chihuahua’s body. Rarely is first contact no biggie.
Except in E4’s The Aliens, a new comedy sci-fi written by Fintan Ryan (Rev, In The Flesh, Never Better) set forty years after an extra-terrestrial craft crash-lands in the North Sea. Out of it came a few hundred humanoid aliens who travelled ashore on rafts and were, for a short time, integrated into British society before political resentment and intolerance eventually forced them into a ghetto. Known as Troy,...

Director Richard Bracewell chats to us about Bill, and the behind the scenes struggle to bring it to the screen.
Regular readers of Den Of Geek will well know that we're sizeable fans of the comedy Bill. It's available on DVD now, and we can't recommend it highly enough.
What wasn't so well known at the time of its release was that Bill went through a distributor change last year, which at one stage looked like it might derail a wide cinema release, and thus keep the movie away from many people's eyeballs. We thus spoke to director Richard Bracewell about the film, and the behind the scenes story of just what was going on...
Can we dig into the untold story underpinning Bill? In particular, the problems that most didn't see, about simply getting the film released? Can you take us through what happened? Because we...

Stephen Fry is playing a character named Cuddly Dick in Yonderland series 3. We've got proof, too...
Here's a recap of some rather excellent news: not only is the sublime Yonderland returning to Sky 1 for a third series, but it's been revealed that Stephen Fry is to join the cast.
We've now learned that he'll playing a character named Cuddly Dick, who has been revealed with this teaser trailer and image combo...
Yonderland, which is quite wonderful if you've not had the chance yet, stars Mathew Baynton, Simon Farbaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Ben Willbond and Laurence Rickard (who write the show and perform the vast bulk of roles in it).
More on Yonderland as we hear it. And do check out Bill, from the same team, which is now available on DVD. We like Bill, too.

Rosario Dawson, Hugh Jackman and Blake Lively lead our look at 2015's best under the radar acting performances in film...
This article contains mild spoilers for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. We've kept these as vague as possible, but if you haven't seen the film yet, you might wish to skip the entry pertaining to that.
2015 was a particularly exemplary year for all kinds of movies, but particularly in genre and blockbuster cinema. When there's so much to talk about, it's inevitable that some of the really good stuff gets lost in the mix of awards season chatter, but that's especially true when there's still some residual stigma about movies outside of the 'worthy' release schedule that will arrive in UK cinemas between now and the Academy Awards ceremony in February.
There are a couple of likely breakthrough geek movies for this year's Oscars, in the...

They may not be General Zod or Darth Vader, but these characters are the kind of mundane villains you might encounter in everyday life...
The most memorable movie villains are often also the most outlandish. If you were to stop most strangers on the street and ask them to name screen villain, they’d probably either tell you to leave them alone and stop making them nervous, or they’d instead name one of cinema’s big hitters: heavy-breathing cloak-wearer Darth Vader, or flesh-eating aesthete Hannibal Lecter.
In reality, villains are more mundane. They seldom wear outlandish costumes, and they don’t necessarily even kill or injure people. Real-world villains can range from bullying and self-important bosses to aggressively opinionated news anchors, and from sadistic physical education teachers to heartless politicians.
So here are 10 or so screen antagonists who've stuck in the memory without wearing hockey masks,...

From Thomas F Wilson in Back To The Future to Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off - when actors play multiple roles...
The dramatic use of actors playing multiple characters is a bold and rather theatrical device that has its ups and downs. It goes at least as far back as Captain Hook being played by the same actor who plays the Darling children's father in stage productions of Peter Pan, a technique largely adopted in film adaptations of the story, too (hello to Jason Isaacs).
It's used a lot in cinema too. Done well, it's impressive, but when it's bad, it's Jack & Jill. Whether used in comedy or drama or outright horror, there are countless examples of actors delivering terrific performances in more than one role at once, and that's before we even get past Cloud Atlas. Still, we've had a go at totting up 25 of the best.

Paddington’s writer-director Paul King will return for its sequel, Paddington 2…
Here’s some good news – after earning a hefty box office success and a place in our hearts with 2014’s Paddington movie, writer-director Paul King has signed up to make a sequel.
Studio Canal and producer David Heyman have snapped King up once more, along with Simon Farnaby. The Bill, Yonderland and Horrible Histories alum – who appeared in a hilarious role in the first film – will help to develop the story.
Deadline broke the news, as well as mentioning the fact that Studio Canal is hoping to turn this one into a long-running franchise. That’s no surprise, considering that the first film raked in a worldwide box office gross of over $250 million, from a budget of just $55 million.

The director of Bill, Richard Bracewell, exclusively writes for us on the influence of Monty Python And The Holy Grail.
To Ni or not to Ni. That was the question. We were making a historical film comedy with a group who had found fame with a TV sketch show. There were going to be comparisons. What sort of relationship were we going to have with the godfather of historical movie comedy? Acknowledge it? Ignore it? Steal from it and run away? On the occasion of the film's fortieth birthday it seems a good moment to ask, as filmmakers: what has Monty Python And The Holy Grail ever done for us?
Monty Python And The Holy Grail was shot in 1974 on a budget of $400,000. It was enough to hire coconuts but not horses. Filming was confined almost exclusively to the Scottish estate of Doune Castle in Glen Coe.

Exclusive: Immensely talented Yonderland writer and actor Laurence Rickard walks us through the making of Shakespeare comedy Bill.

It was April 6th 2011 – my first day in what I shall call 'the movie business' (because I can't think of a less knobby term) – and those were the words of Tony Bracewell, producer of Bill... That afternoon we went in to see the lovely people at BBC Films, who said 'that sounds great, let's do it'. It remains the only time Tony's been wrong, so I like to remind him about it. A Lot.
Of course, his note of caution was utterly justified. As I've since learnt,...

Of course, his note of caution was utterly justified. As I've since learnt,...

With Yonderland series 3 on its way, we salute an underappreciated family comedy gem from the cast and creators of Horrible Histories...
I make no bones about the fact that Horrible Histories is one of one my favourite TV shows. It never fails to make me laugh and I cannot tell you at how many pub quizzes I’ve deployed nuggets of information learned from that show. So, two years ago when it was announced the team behind Horrible Histories were moving on to something new, needless to say, I was rather intrigued. When I discovered fantasy and puppets were being thrown into that mix, I was well and truly sold.

The leading lights of the TV series romp through a mash-up Shakespeare in Love and Blackadder
The players of TV’s terrific Horrible Histories romp their way through this entertaining mash-up of Shakespeare in Love and Blackadder II. Mathew Baynton is the titular Bill Shakespeare, recently ditched by lute-beat combo Mortal Coil, now off to make his mark as a London playwright. Encounters with Christopher Marlowe and the Earl of Croydon open theatrical doors, although the real behind-the-scenes director is Spain’s King Phillip II (Ben Willbond, co-writing with Laurence Rickard), who’s planning to kill Helen McCrory’s frazzle-toothed Elizabeth. Nicely balancing its historically literate gags with broad knockabout slapstick, Bill is a crowd-pleasing treat that should tickle audiences young and old alike.

The picture above is not a still from Everest, this is just the lengths rising talents will travel to appear on the Empire podcast. Braving the crevices and treacherous climes of our frosty audio booth this week is the star of said action/adventure movie, not to mention Terminator Genisys and Zero Dark Thirty, Jason Clarke. The Aussie actor has a burgeoning reputation and is one of the standouts in Baltasar Kormákur's high-altitude epic. We chatted to him about all things mountain-based and let Bill stars Simon Farnaby and Laurence Rickard take care of all ruff-wearing sea level chitchat. The pair had much to say about their Shakespearean comedy - helpful, the latter also co-wrote it - and augmented it with some humour badinage about nicknames and time-travel. Anyone who doesn't tune into this one is a gorbellied bat-fowling knave. So there.P.S. You can check out our...

Not only are Ben Willbond and Laurence Rickard the brains behind the new British comedy Bill – depicting the lost years of William Shakespeare, but they take starring roles too, as part of the comedy troupe that, between them, share over 40 roles in this hilarious production. We had the pleasure of sitting down with

The Horrible Histories team present the early life of the Bard in an entertaining, panto-ish romp
Related: Silly Billy: the Horrible Histories team take Shakespeare to the movies
From the people who brought you the Cbbc TV show Horrible Histories comes the latest iteration of the franchise. This feature is a very funny, if derivative panto-ish romp about the early life of Shakespeare. There are hints of the Carry Ons, Blackadder and especially Python, with one gag that must surely be a specific homage to Holy Grail. Shakespeare is played by Mathew Baynton with a soft-spoken intensity that Ben Whishaw might admire. This Bill originally played lead lute in a Stratford band called Mortal Coil; sacked for his self-indulgent solos, Bill was forced to take up literature. His meeting with Christopher Marlowe is not dissimilar from the way Tom Stoppard imagined it in Shakespeare in Love. Spy chief Sir Francis...

Bill is funny. There’s no better way to put it than that. I was chuckling from the simple-but-sharp opening crawl through to the Shakespeare medley finale, with a good few belly laughs along the way. If all you want is a comedy stuffed with jokes, rather than a forced heartfelt story with the odd humorous set-piece (which we’ve grown accustomed to from the genre in recent years), then you’re in for a good time.
The film comes from the same team behind Cbbc’s Horrible Histories, which became notable for appealing as much to parents as it did kids looking for a teatime treat. And those who’ve caught that show will know exactly what they’re in for here – a historical setting populated by a bunch of off-kilter characters, personified by period trappings suddenly making way for very modern tongues.

The Horrible Histories team tackle the early life of William Shakespeare. A funny family treat is the end result.
“Half as good as Shakespeare In Love”, is what Bill’s co-creator, Laurence Rickard, says they were aiming to create.
This whimsical imagining of William Shakespeare’s ‘lost years’ certainly pays one or two playful homages to that other less-than-accurate biopic, but its real heritage can be traced to Monty Python and Blackadder. In the fashion of the former, the sextet of main actors, already known for their ensemble work on Cbbc’s Horrible Histories and Sky’s Yonderland, share the majority of the roles between them. Each has a main role, and Mathew Baynton proves a lovably optimistic Shakespeare at the heart of it all. Yet it is the minor characters – ‘the body collector’ and ‘sausage guy’ being particular favourites – who bring this world to life.

The crew behind the TV hit talk about Bill, their big-screen caper about Shakespeare’s ‘lost years’ as an out-of-work lute player
“When you’re pitching stuff,” says Ben Willbond, pulling a narrow, inquisitorial face, “they ask, ‘Who is it for?’ They tell you, ‘We’re looking for comedies that are for people between 16 and 18.’” He relaxes his expression. “Well, good luck with that! We’ve gone for stuff that makes us laugh.”
Willbond is talking about Bill, the film caper he has co-written about the “lost years” of William Shakespeare. “In the back of my mind,” he adds, “I’m also going, ‘Would my nephew laugh at that? Would my grandad?’”

To be or not to be William Shakespeare? It wasn't a hard question for actor Mathew Baynton to answer – especially as his take on the Bard is rather, well, irreverent. Bill is a new film made by and starring the Horrible Histories gang, who give the early life of Shakespeare their surreally comic signature treatment. Just don't call it a kids' film…...
