Aisling Franciosi of The Nightingale and The Last Voyage of the Demeter stars in the upcoming horror film Stopmotion, which is set to have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest, running in Austin, Texas from September 21st through the 28th. Ahead of the premiere screening, Variety reports that IFC Films has acquired North American and select International distribution rights to the film. They’re planning to give Stopmotion a theatrical release sometime in 2024, then it will head over to the Shudder streaming service.
Franciosi takes on the role of Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator who is struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother. Suddenly alone in the world, she creates a macabre new puppet film, while struggling to maintain her sanity. As Ella’s mind starts to fracture, the characters in her animated film take on a terrifying life of their own, and the unleashed...

Canada’s horror auteur twins, the Soska Sisters, remade their idol David Cronenberg’s earliest and grisliest film.
Canadian filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska have been delivering artistic haymakers since they started their careers. It was back then that they self-financed, wrote, directed and starred in the the delicately titled Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Since then, they’ve also created their best and most acclaimed movie to date, American Mary (2012), while also directing a segment for The ABCs of Death 2 (2014), and two movies for WWE Films, the slasher sequel See No Evil 2 (2014) and the action thriller Vendetta (2015).
Their movies are marked by a decidedly feminist point-of-view as well as a gleeful, often outrageous use of gore and visceral horror, so it’s no surprise that they have now taken on the risk of remaking Rabid, one of the early films by their idol and fellow Canadian,...

For Nightmare Cinema, five Masters of Horror have assembled to immerse fans in five tales of terror, all told within the confines of a haunted movie theatre inhabited by The Projectionist (Mickey Rourke), a mysterious entity who oversees the facility, showing those who dare enter its doors their deepest fears and darkest secrets. Nightmare Cinema directors include Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade, Alejandro Brugués, and Ryûhei Kitamura, and it features performances from the likes of Richard Chamberlain, Elizabeth Reaser, Belinda Balaski, Patrick Wilson, and Annabeth Gish, to name a few.
The wraparound segment in Nightmare Cinema is called “The Projectionist,” and it acts as the glue that brings all these different stories and cinematic visions together through the Rialto Theatre. Garris provides his directorial expertise for these various interstitial segments, and he sets a nice, eerie tone for all the stories to come. Rourke pops in for a few of the wraparound scenes,...

Killing Eve Season 2 is set for more audacious bloodshed on BBC America.
Killing Eve impressed audiences with its stylistically subversive, thrilling, hilarious and terrifying spy story that also happens to be from a female perspective. BBC America obviously knew it had something special on its hands from the get-go, renewing Killing Eve for a second season before the first season even began airing!
Killing Eve showcases the dark, yet irreverent, rivalry between Sandra Oh’s unassuming MI5 pencil-pusher, Eve Polastri, and Jodie Comer’s psychopathic assassin, Villanelle — and it's been groundbreaking.
Indeed, the inagural season of the series reaped awards season accolades, nabbing a 2019 Golden Globes “Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama” win for Sandra Oh, as well as a “Best Television Series – Drama” nomination. Plus, it earned 2018 Primetime Emmy nominations for “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series” for Oh, and “Outstanding...

Halloween 2017 was dominated by Pennywise and Diana Prince of Themyscira, while Jigsaw laid claim to the horror throne once again with a long-awaited, and sadly underwhelming, horror sequel.
But it seems special effects maestro Steven Kostanski (The Void, ABCs of Death 2 – W is for Wish) one-upped just about everyone with his eerily life-like Halloween costume. Inspired by Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, the ’93 slasher film that presented a deep dive into Voorhees’ supernatural roots, Kostanski has posted close-up photos of his mask, and the makeup work here is undoubtedly impressive.
Created in collaboration with Pierce Dirks, Bloody Disgusting was the first to uncover this gruesome guise, and thank heavens they did. We’ve included all four photos in the gallery below, but fair warning: the faint of heart need not apply. Indeed, if you’re at all squeamish, you’d be best skipping this one altogether, otherwise you risk ruining your breakfast.

Kier-la Janisse's Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies has been educating people in London, New York and Montreal for a few years now on the wide variety of forms and subjects in horror films. And there are two excellent classes upcoming in London for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the genre. On Thursday November 9th, the Institute is welcoming Robert Morgan (Bobby Yeah, 'D is for Deloused from ABCs of Death 2) and Chris Shepherd (Dad's Dead, Silence is Golden) to discuss horror animation. Animation of the horror variety might not be common, but some of the best short animated films of recent years are horror, with monsters, dark places, and scares abounding in the argubaly far greater imaginative form that can be achieved...

Premiering at FrightFest in London on the 28th August, Teddy Bears Picnic is a proof of concept horror short from Tom Hodge – aka The Dude Designs – the poster artist behind artwork for films such Hobo with A Shotgun (2011), The Innkeepers (2011), The Heat (2013), WolfCop (2014), The Other Side of The Door (2016), and They Live.
Written, produced, directed and financed by Hodge, the short film stars Abby Miller (Justified, Aquarius & The Sinner TV series), Laurence R Harvey (Human Centipede 2+3, ABCs of Death 2 & The Editor) and Lorelei Winterfrost; and is inspired by the classic 1907 melody of the same name… only this time re-envisioned as a nightmarish fable that twists the concept of childhood innocence!
Says Hodge:
I love horror as a genre for its pure unabashed creativity. It gives you a wider scope to create unique characters and settings. What are nightmares if not essentially creative? I particularly loved the creativity of high...

Something is lurking in the woods of Ireland. In Lorcan Finnegan's Without Name, three surveyors encounter an indescribable entity. Two new clips have been released for the film, via Global Digital Releasing. The very strange "The Light in Here is Weird" clip is hosted here. And, Without Name centrally stars: Alan Mckenna (ABCs of Death 2), Niamh Algar and James Browne. Garret Shanley wrote the script. To be released through Video-on-demand this June 20th, a preview of the film's North American launch is hosted here. The clip "The Light in Here is Weird" is a bit surreal. The film's early trailer - even more so. The latest clip shows surveyor Olivia (Niamh Algar) looking for Eric (Alan McKenna). The music is haunting and the audio is distorted. The lighting dampens and brightens, creating an almost hallucinogenic quality. What is causing the distortion? Without Name has shown at a number of film festivals.

Female horror fans are hardly unicorns. Quite the opposite – we go to the movies to get scared, often in greater numbers than men. Female horror directors aren't mythical beings either, even though it can sometimes feel this way. But in fact, the last few years have seen an exciting wave of horror films helmed by women who haven't merely joined the rank-and-file as encouraging statistics. Instead, movies like Jennifer Kent's The Babadook or Karyn Kusama's The Invitation have helped elevate the genre by opening it up to stories that unsettle audiences in new,...

At its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this past January, both the filmmaker and his leading man hastily ran out of their in-progress screening to stress-vomit, while a fellow cast member declared that "the first time I saw, I was appalled."

Anyone familiar with the work of Jen and Sylvia Soska knows the identical twin filmmakers owe more than a small debt to the early and mid-career oeuvre of David Cronenberg. Like the acclaimed director, the Soskas are both Canadian natives and specialize in "body horror," the sub-genre exploiting viewers' innate fears of physical disfigurement that was practically invented (or at least taken to a more outré level) by Cronenberg. Over the course of his career, Cronenberg gave us such squeamish classics as 1975's high-rise horror show Shivers, 1983's surreal Videodrome, and the uber-grisly 1986 remake of The Fly. Given these similarities, it's fitting that the Soskas -- arguably best known for their intensely gory body-modification horror film American Mary -- are currently in the process of remaking Cronenberg's 1977 movie Rabid, which starred pornographic film actress Marilyn Chambers as a woman who develops a taste for human blood after undergoing experimental plastic surgery.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Another bad weekend where nothing really popped, which is bad news for a month at the box office where only Clint Eastwood’s Sully exceeded any expectations. Tim Burton’s new film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children came out just below my predictions with $29 million, but the Mark Wahlberg-Peter Berg disaster flick Deepwater Horizon was right around where I predicted with $20.2 million. The comedy Masterminds tanked with just $6.5 million for the weekend to end up in sixth place while Disney’s The Queen of Katwe did slightly better than predicted with $2.5 million.
The first full weekend in October has a good deal of competition from the release of the video game Mafia III to the...

Watch Three Clips from Accidental Exorcist: “All Richard really wants is to finish his book but fate dealt him a very strange hand – he is a natural born Exorcist. In fact, he is the best there ever was and with possessions on the rise across the city, he’s booked solid. Reluctantly, he faces the fact that performing exorcisms is the only thing he’s truly good at even though it’s wearing him down and making his life utterly miserable. Case after case, he stares evil incarnate in the face, taking on satanic forces to help those in need. However, he soon finds his power...

For every film festival movie that hits all the expected cliches, whether it’s troubled romance, coming-of-age, or dysfunctional families, there’s always one movie that goes against the grain of everything. And that’s where The Greasy Strangler comes into play. From The ABCs of Death 2 segment director Jim Hosking comes a positively nuts feature film […]

2016 is hereby declared the year of the female filmmaker.
A few exceptions aside, for several years, a spot in the director’s chair seemed like a seat reserved only for those in the boys’ club. However, a revolution has been quietly brimming beneath the surface, with more and more women stepping behind the camera as of late and genre films leading the way in this massive reconstruction. Game changers like Jennifer Kent, Marjane Satrapi and Veronika Franz have been stepping up and proving themselves as not only worthy contenders when it comes to noteworthy women who make movies, but equally as skilled as any male photographer.
While there are many exciting projects on the horizon to be helmed by talented ladies, this list is dedicated to a few of the most striking pictures that are set to release soon. Read on to learn about these thrilling new prospects, and find...

Halloween is filled with with sugarcoated frights, but throughout history, the night before the big “31” on the calendar has featured more tricks than treats. Blumhouse Productions is looking to bring the chaos of Halloween Eve to the big screen with a new film they are developing that is appropriately titled Devil’s Night.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Devil’s Night is in development at Blumhouse, with Blum and Bobbi Sue Luther producing the new holiday horror film written by Sean Tretta (12 Monkeys TV series, Hunters). Ryan Turek will supervise the movie on its journey through development.
A director has not officially been named at this time, but it’s worth noting that Tretta has previously helmed five feature-length horror films (including Death of a Ghost Hunter and The Prometheus Project). Tretta also directed the short film M is for Matchmaker, which was created as an official entry for ABCs of Death 2...

Cinema history is marked by the efforts of a few genuine provocateurs and many would-be shock purveyors. But based on his latest feature, director Jim Hosking (“The ABCs of Death 2”) may have precisely the knack to create the uncomfortable, even vile visions required to step out into the front rank of true freaks. "The Greasy Strangler," which debuted in the Midnight section at Sundance 2016, would feel outré in in any collection of audacious, boundary-busting films. It has roots in the patience-testing comedy of Tim and Eric, and 1990s alt-comics such as early issues of “Eightball” by Daniel Clowes and Dave Cooper's sweat-drenched “Weasel.” Constructed around three performances that display an utter lack of physical caution, this is a flatulent, filthy, and trying relationship comedy with every corner pushed beyond extremes. If “Barton Fink” was made by John Waters, this is the sort of movie he'd write. Read More:...

Exclusive: Protagonist boards international rights to Sundance Midnight title executive produced by Tim League and Ben Wheatley.
Following its gross-out launch in Sundance’s Midnight strand, Protagonist Pictures has boarded international sales rights to Jim Hosking’s off-kilter comedy debut The Greasy Strangler.
Co-written by Hosking and Toby Harvard, who previously co-wrote The ABCs Of Death 2 anthology segment G Is For Grandad, the film is produced by Daniel Noah, Josh C Waller, Elijah Wood (The Lord Of The Rings), Andy Starke (Kill List) and Ant Timpson (Turbo Kid), the film is executive produced by Tim League of Drafthouse Films and director Ben Wheatley (High-Rise).
In between profanity, flatulence, cellulite and grease the film follows a father and son who are competing for the attentions of the same woman. Undoubtedly one of the more unusual Midnight selections at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival was Jim Hosking’s The Greasy Strangler, the unpredictably perverse story of a father and son (Michael St. Michaels, Sky Elobar), a grease-laden murderer and the woman who gets between them (Elizabeth De Razzo).
Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with Hosking at the festival and heard from the up-and-coming filmmaker about his journey to getting The Greasy Strangler made, collaborating with his cast, and pushing the boundaries of modern cinema.
I'm curious, where did the story of The Greasy Strangler originate, and how did you get from the script point to the part where you got people to say “yes” to this? Because it is so unusual, I can’t imagine it was an easy sell to say the least.
Jim Hosking: I don't think anyone understood what this film was. I think...

Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have paired up to present an inspired disc set for The Larry Fessenden Collection, an assortment of four of the director’s most notable genre films. Migrating between a number of notable projects as a character actor (he usually appears as some peripheral, grizzled weirdo, showing up in titles by Scorsese, Neil Jordan, and Kelly Reichardt, amongst others), he’s also a noted producer, editor, screenwriter, and cinematographer. But Fessenden’s made his most striking impression with a growing body of genre oriented independent directorial efforts. Usually prizing strong characterization amidst situations of mounting dread, Fessenden seems fascinated with testing the strengths and inherent weaknesses of mankind, and it’s probably easiest to label his filmography as environmental horror.
Out of Fessenden’s own production company Glass Eye Pix, 1991’s No Telling (or the Frankenstein Complex) melds motifs of Mary Shelley’s famed mad scientist with modern animal experimentation.

This fall, Scream Factory's celebrating the Halloween season indie style with their Blu-ray release of The Larry Fessenden Collection, featuring four of Fessenden's films: No Telling, Habit, Wendigo and The Last Winter. As a writer, producer, director and actor, Fessenden’s oeuvre has developed a passionate fan base who applaud his realistic, character-driven horror stories. Fessenden’s films often examine the disintegration of civilization and humanity, provoking terror in the viewer through psychological dread, not gratuitous gore.

The creative team of Astron 6 has completed The Editor. This film had its premiere in 2014, at the Toronto Int. Film Festival. Now, this giallo-inspired thriller is coming to several Canadian theatres, on Sept. 18th. This release will be followed up by another as The Editor releases on home entertainment formats, Oct. 6th. The film is a send-up starring Paz de la Huerta (Boardwalk Empire), Samantha Hill (Bad Meat), Laurence R. Harvey (The ABCs of Death 2), Adam Brooks (Manborg), Matthew Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Tristan Risk and Udo Kier. Hopefully, actress Paz's appearance in this film has not ruined her career, forever. And now, fans can preview the film's horrifying launch here. The story follows an almost out-of-work editor. It is suspected that his desperation has led to murder. But, only Rey (Adam Brooks) believes in his innocence. Now, Rey must prove to others that he is not behind a series of murders,...

One of my favorite indie horror releases of the 2015, We Are Still Here is making its way to Blu-ray and DVD just in time for Halloween:

He hasn't quite gone the writer/director route of fellow rocker Rob Zombie, but guitar hero Slash launched his own horror movie production company, SlashFiction, back in 2010. The first fruit of that labour was last year's Nothing Left To Fear, directed by Anthony Leonardi III. Now here's a teaser for the next one, The Hell Within."When I read the script for The Hell Within I knew it was the right project for my taste," says the top-hatted rock'n'roll producer. And it's a story I know horror fans will dig as well."That story involves a New York woman, Marie, heading into the Brazilian jungle to save a missing child following some mysterious phonecalls, but finding that's only the beginning of an ordeal. Marie and her husband David get stranded in Seringal, a village overrun with drug runners and lost souls,...
