Plot: Will Ferrell learns that one of his closest friends and collaborators is now trans. Unsure of the ground rules in the next stage of their relationship, the two drive from New York to Los Angeles together and reconnect.
Review: Will & Harper is a gentle, often hilarious documentary about two friends reconnecting after one comes out as trans. The fact that one of the friends is Will Ferrell made it a must-see for me at Sundance. But, it has a lot of resonance beyond its showbiz aspects, with it a nuanced portrait of a life in transition. It starts with essentially being about how the world views Ferrell’s friend, Harper, but eventually, it becomes more about how she views herself.
It’s a complex question because Harper Steele made her transition later in life, with her being sixty-one as the movie starts. She’s interesting, having been the...

Among the Emmy categories that “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” is looking to get nominated in, Best Movie/Limited Actor for its star Daniel Radcliffe is right at the top along with Best TV Movie. The Roku Channel’s hit telefilm may seem like an unconventional nominee, but there are several promising factors that are working in his favor.
The fact that the movie is a flat-out comedy could be viewed as something of an obstacle for it to overcome. But, performances from comedic-dramas have scored noms here, including Jeff Bridges for “A Dog Year” (2010) and Hugh Grant for “A Very English Scandal” (2019). We have also seen three comedy performances contend in this category: two for Ricky Gervais for “Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale” (2008) and “Derek: The Special” (2015) and one for Jesse Plemons for “Black Mirror: USS Callister” (2018).

Last Year’s Winner: Regina King, “Watchmen”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Rare is it to see an acting hot streak in the limited series categories, but we kind of, sort of, have one! Regina King has won two of the last three trophies for Best Actress in a Limited Series, after pulling off the upset in 2018 to win for “Seven Seconds” and then rolling to a well-deserved win for “Watchmen” in 2020. And if you extend the streak beyond Best Actress to Best Supporting Actress, then King has won in four of the last six years. (She took home the Emmy for “American Crime” in 2015 and 2016.) And her hot streak could continue if she’s nominated for hosting “SNL” this year, though not in the Limited Series section.

Hollywood actress Jessica Alba feels women will not take a step back as the entertainment industry moves towards revival in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic. She says women are going to be in high demand, adding that if anybody is going to stay at home, it will probably be men.
"I actually feel like women are in such high demand that if anybody is going to be staying at home, it will probably be going to be the man," Alba said while talking about how the industry will change after the virus crisis, and the place of women in the new reality.
"There really is a major pull on women -- behind the camera, in executive positions, in positions of power -- because it is proven that your business will thrive and will be better off, if there's diversity. So, if you have too much of one thing or the another,...

Actress Jessica Alba says she has a "little bit of a detachment" in the entertainment world.
"I don't, I sort of think of the time I spend with my kids and I think more about, like, my job with my company that I created. And, sort of, you know, that feels more attached to the legacy that I'm trying to build and leave for my children," Alba said when asked if she thinks about the legacy she is leaving for her children while picking roles.

Television has gotten to a place where programming is so daring and ambitious that it's willing to take risks and meta statements on the medium.
There are a number of high concept series that are currently on TV that wouldn't have even made sense decades ago. IFC has delivered a number of comedies that are all predicated on false realities, like Documentary Now! or The Spoils of Babylon. Now Sherman’s Showcase finds its confidence in the fact that it's supposed to have a storied Soul Train-esque reputation to fall back on while the show has fun with its alternate take on a variety show. Last year we reported that Will Ferrell had signed on to star in a movie for Netflix entitled Eurovision.
The story is based on the "wildly popular and long-running international TV music competition The Eurovision Song Contest. It is a contest that began in Switzerland in 1956, when seven West European nations participated. This year 43 countries competed for the prize, won in Lisbon by Netta (Israel) performing the song Toy. Abba (winner in 1974 for Sweden) and Céline Dion (winner in 1988 for Switzerland) are among the former contestants who launched successful worldwide careers after their wins at The Eurovision Song Contest."
We already knew that Ferrell was writing the script alongside Andrew Steele, known for his time as writer and head-writer at SNL and his comedic collaborations with Ferrell in the past, writing the ridiculously hilarious The Spoils of Babylon, The Royal Wedding Live With Cord and Tish!, and the spoof Lifetime movie,...

For the most part, epic television tends to focus on dramas, with comedies usually delivered in smaller, bite-sized episodes. But IFC changed the game with “The Spoils Of Babylon.” The mini-series riffed on more serious dramas, spreading the parody out across multiple episodes, and getting an all-star cast to take part. And that continued with […]

The Coen brothers are some of Hollywood’s, nay, the world’s most important directors. Since they entered the scene in 1984 with Blood Simple they’ve rightfully found huge success with their brand of offbeat stories and neurotic characters. Like Woody Allen before them, they’ve tried their hand at a variety of genres, yet kept their voice consistent throughout. They also have the rare distinguishment of appealing to the art-house crowds, while also finding commercial success in Hollywood and abroad. Like Allen, every so often they have a “pallet cleanser” project in between some of their “high-brow” fare that just doesn’t congeal the way it ought to. Hail, Caesar! falls into that latter category.
I did my best to go into this with an open mind. It was the Coen Brothers after all, and the trailers did their job well in alerting us to just how many Big...

Television has become a home for just about any vision in its golden age. With the proliferation of original content creators spanning channels, online entities and various new distribution models and each one looking for a breakout program (if not a brand identity), there has been some really weird stuff on — and off — TV of late. It would be hard to find a stranger addition to the comedy genre than last year's "The Spoils of Babylon," and its sequel doesn't go any more quietly into the night. "The Spoils Before Dying" is oddball entertainment if not at its finest, than at least at its most appealingly weird. If the conventions you skewer are no longer remembered, are you still making a spoof? That’s the question raised by noir satire “The Spoils Before Dying,” a spiritual sequel to IFC’s Funny or Die-produced “The Spoils of Babylon,” which last year parodied over-the-top miniseries about the trials and tribulations of wealthy families. Choosing, in 2015, to take on film noir is a bit like filming an entire TV movie mocking the conventions of Lifetime TV movies–something that “Dying” stars Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig did just last month. Of a generation that grew up when cable was still emerging and the.

To the victor belong the Spoils, though it’s unlikely viewers will feel they’ve won much of anything with this follow-up to 2014’s epic miniseries pastiche The Spoils of Babylon. The target there was bloated TV events of the ’70s and ’80s like The Thorn Birds and Rich Man, Poor Man, popular doorstop novel adaptations which drew out their soapy dramas over multiple episodes. Each installment was introduced by “writer”/“director” Eric Jonrosh (Will Ferrell), a later-years-Orson-Wellesian blowhard who pontificated on his genius in-between unhealthy gulps of red wine. Lust. Murder. Jazz. Dicks. (The private kind.) IFC’s new mini-series The Spoils Before Dying has a surreal good time making fun of all that, along with pretentious art films, late-career Orson Welles, old-timey cop slang, and a bunch of other madcap targets. (For a sample, check out the exclusive clip below, in which the series' auteur Eric Jonrosh, played by Will Ferrell, unveils a "lost" sex scene between Kristen Wiig's jazz singer Delores O'Dell and Michael K. Williams's pianist-p.I. Rock Banyon.) Premiering on July 8, the six-parter is a follow-up to last year’s similarly cuckoo mock-sweeping epic The Spoils of Babylon, and yet it only just maybe makes it into the top three oddest things Kristen Wiig has done on TV over the last year. In case you somehow forgot, Wiig also got her ya-yas out dancing to Sia’s “Chandelier” with Maddie Ziegler at the Grammys in February,...

"The Spoils Before Dying" (Wednesday on IFC at 9 p.m.)
Are you ready for this three-night television event? Not possible! But it's coming anyway. "The Spoils Before Dying" is the comedy follow-up to "The Spoils of Babylon" miniseries. Following up on its pitch-perfect parody of overwrought novels and epic miniseries of days gone by with The Spoils of Babylon, Funny or Die has produced a follow-up comedy miniseries for IFC. The three-night The Spoils Before Dying again features “author” Eric Jonrosh (Will Ferrell, also an executive producer), who introduces his story. It’s a pulp-noir murder mystery set in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles’ jazz scene. Dying follows Rock Banyon (Michael Kenneth Williams) as he becomes the prime suspect in the double murder of his occasional lover Fresno Foxglove (Maya Rudolph), who is found dead with another man. Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig's Lifetime movie A Deadly Adoption is heading across the pond to Channel 5.
The film - a knowing wink to the Us network's melodramas - will air on the channel on July 5 at 10pm.
Also starring 90210 star Jessica Lowndes, A Deadly Adoption is due to air on Lifetime in the Us later this month, and marks the 25th anniversary of Lifetime's TV movie strand.
Funny or Die and mockbuster filmmaker Rachel Lee Goldenberg has directed the film, while Ferrell - a self-confessed fan of Lifetime TV movies - is also an executive producer.
It was written by The Spoils of Babylon's Andrew Steele.
Back in April, it was reportedly that the movie had been scrapped by Ferrell and Wiig, but the rumours were dismissed after a huge billboard was unveiled on Hollywood Boulevard.
It was recently announced that Ferrell will star in Lasse Hallström's upcoming comedy Tom's Dad.

Thank you, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig, for A Deadly Adoption, the "Sabotage" video of Lifetime movies. Ever since the duo had announced they were doing this, it's been clear they set out to make a real Lifetime movie, not a parody. So A Deadly Adoption is a glorious two-hour love letter to the network's flicks and those of us who live for them. Every mega-cheese trope is here, from the opening credits (an aerial shot of a lake house!) to the final words, "Inspired by a true story." So...

Few people can sell a line like ‘You know the dangers of diabetic kitoacidosis’ as well as Will Ferrell – add enormous orchestration, endless cellphone failure and a sinister pregnant hottie and you’ve the mother of all trash movie satires
Coming three years after Casa de mi Padre and a week before The Spoils Before Dying, A Dangerous Adoption suggests that Will Ferrell and his sometime partner in crime Kristen Wiig are determined to spoof every last TV genre they can lay their hands on. Ferrell’s Casa De Mi Padre took the Latin American telenovela to the woodshed, while The Spoils of Babylon (The Spoils Before Dying being a sequel) went toe-to-toe with big-budget epic miniseries of the 1970s and 80s like The Thornbirds and oligarchic oilpatch melodramas like Dallas. Most of the reactions I saw roll by in my social media timelines this weekend to the film "A Deadly Adoption" were along the lines of, "What the hell did I just watch?" I can understand the confusion. And it's awesome. "A Deadly Adoption" aired Saturday on Lifetime, and it is, by any metric you want to use, a completely typical Lifetime movie. What makes it stand out is that the film stars Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig, and there's nothing about the film at any point that would tip that this is meant as a joke. The film opens with a party being thrown by Robert (Ferrell) and his wife Sarah (Wiig), during which Robert casually remarks about how they're going to have to fix the dock soon, just about the time Sarah walks down to stand on the dock no matter what Robert says. She's six months pregnant,...

Are they serious? That was the question the Internet pondered after posters for Lifetime’s latest trash TV movie, A Deadly Adoption, began appearing. What were we to make of these comically ominous ads with Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig doing their best stone faces? Lifetime’s marketing department insisted the former SNL-ers were playing it straight (or at least as straight as any Lifetime movie is capable of being). But it really only took a quick glance at the film’s IMDb page — which credits Funny or Die and The Spoils of Babylon’s Andrew Steele as teleplay writer — to

First there was "The Spoils Of Babylon," IFC's miniseries soap opera parody that brought together a ton of big stars (Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Tobey Maguire, Tim Robbins, Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer) for one big goof. How did a Lifetime Original Movie become my most anticipated event of the summer? Thanks for that, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig. The pair are starring in A Deadly Adoption, arriving on Lifetime later this month, and the first full trailer for the soapy flick has confirmed that it’s the most ridiculous, riotous thing to ever grace the small screen (probably).
Ferrell and Wiig star as a couple who decide to adopt the baby of a pregnant woman (Jessica Lowndes) that they’ve agreed to shelter until the birth. However, the woman’s own dark intentions complicate those plans. The trailer fills you in on the rest, which involves jealousy, adultery, murder, mayhem, car chases and all other kinds of Lifetime-style dramatic fireworks. And of course, a dramatic song swelling over the proceedings (Hidden Citizens’ cover of “Silent Running,” if you’re interested).
Developed and shot in complete secrecy,...

Willsten? Wiiggell? We're still working on their celebrity hybrid name, but we do know that Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell are one of our favorite comedic pairings. Which is why the news that the twosome filmed a secret Lifetime movie is so exciting. The flick, which is going to be called A Deadly Adoption (can we get a slow clap for that title?), is about a married couple (Ferrell and Wiig) who welcome a pregnant woman into their home to adopt her baby, but things go terribly, (probably) murderously, wrong. And the script was penned by The Spoils of Babylon's Andrew Steele. Not much else is known about the movie besides the general plot, but that doesn't stop us from speculating....
