Kornel Mundruczo (Pieces Of A Woman) has signed on to direct The Revolution According To Kamo, a biopic about the friendship between Simon Arshaki Ter-Petrosyan aka “Kamo” and his best childhood friend “Soso” who would go on to become Joseph Stalin.
Mundrcuczo’s frequent collaborator Kata Weber has adapted an original screenplay by Pawel Pawlikowski and Ben Hopkins.
Spanning 30 years between 1891 and Kamo’s death in 1922, the Georgian-language film is described as “a portrait of the birth of the world’s most murderous dictator through the eyes of his best friend, ally, devoted disciple, and henchman.” The two grew up together in the small town of Gori close to Tbilisi. Stalin was born into extreme poverty while Kamo’s family were wealthy merchants. Although Soso leaves Gori to attend a seminary, the two are reunited in their late teens in Tbilisi where the charismatic Soso has become an agitator and...

Exactly ten years after the genre-mixing, canine-driven Hungarian thriller “White God” landed the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, this year’s ceremony culminated in the same prize going to a somewhat corresponding title: Chinese director Guan Hu’s “Black Dog,” a fusion of western, film noir and offbeat comedy with a highly lovable mutt at its center. The film, about a damaged loner returning to his desert hometown after a spell in prison and finding a kindred spirit in an equally world-weary greyhound, beat 17 other titles to take the top prize in the festival’s second-most prestigious competitive section. (The festival’s Official Competition awards will be handed out tomorrow night.)
Jury president Xavier Dolan, the actor-auteur behind such films as “Mommy” and “Laurence Anyways,” commended Guan’s film for “its breathtaking poetry, its imagination, its precision [and] its masterful direction.” He echoed the enthusiasm of Variety critic Jessica Kiang,...

Based on what I can gather about her new film, At the Sea, Amy Adams needs a pair of sandals and a stiff drink. Adams is teaming up with Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber – the director and writer of Pieces of a Woman and White God – for a new drama about rejuvenation and adjusting to a life you had not planned to live.
According to Deadline, At the Sea finds Adams’s Laura returning to her family at their holiday beach house after a long rehabilitation. Once there, Laura must readjust to her new lot in life, still haunted by aspects she tried to leave behind. Staring down the barrel of a new chapter of her life, Laura must cope without her fame, fortune, and, of all things, her identity.
Adams, a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, recently wrapped production on the sci-fi drama Klara and the Sun, which Taika Waititi directs.

Pic will be produced by Alexander Rodnyansky of Ar Content, Stuart Manashil, Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett for Ryder Picture Company, Hammerstone Studios’ Alex Lebovici and Jon Oakes, and Viktória Petrányi and Mundruczó. Exec producers are Paul J. Diaz, Maria Breese of 3:33 Creative, Lee Broda of Lb Entertainment, Jeff Rice of Jeff Rice Films, and Michael Kupisk. Zsofi Oblath and Rachel Rubin will co-produce.
Ar Content, Paul J. Diaz, and Hammerstone Studios will finance the film, with WME Independent to rep domestic rights, Capstone Pictures handling international, and Sacker Law to oversee production legal.
A six-time Academy Award nominee, Adams most recently wrapped production on 3000 Pictures’ Klara and the Sun, the next film from Oscar winner Taika Waititi, which adapts the dystopian sci-fi story from Kazuo Ishiguro. Up next, she’ll be seen starring in Searchlight Pictures’ Nightbitch from filmmaker Marielle Heller, a dark comedy she also produced through her production company Bond Group Entertainment that hits theaters December 6.
A married director-writer pair out of Hungary, Mundruczó and Wéber are perhaps best known for their 2020 pregnancy drama Pieces of a Woman, which premiered in Venice and brought star Vanessa Kirby her first Oscar nomination following its release on Netflix. Prior to that, the duo collaborated on White God, which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes in 2014; Jupiter’s Moon, which was nominated for the Palme d’Or; and Evolution, which also played the French festival. Separately, Mundruczó directed the pilot of the Apple TV+ limited series, The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried.
Most recently, Hammerstone produced the action thriller Boy Kills World starring Bill Skarsgård, which will release wide on April 26, and the horror-thriller Don’t Move, starring Kelsey Asbille and Finn Wittrock, for Netflix.
Ryder Picture Company has produced acclaimed titles like Dumb Money and Bruiser.
Ar Content is known for Cannes prize winners like 2019’s Beanpole, from filmmaker Kantemir Balagov, and 2021’s Unclenching the Fists from Kira Kovalenko.
Adams is represented by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Mundruczó and Wéber are repped by United Agents and Novo.

British special effects artist Roger Dicken, best known for his work on Ridley Scott’s Alien and the 1970s sci-fi thriller When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth has died. He was 84.
Dicken died on February 18 at his home in North Wales. His career began in the mid-60s when he accepted a freelance effects role on a sprawling sci-fi feature helmed by an ambitious American filmmaker named Stanley Kubrick. The project would end up being the seminal 2001: A Space Odyssey. Dicken created miniature moon terrains for the pic. His work would ultimately go uncredited.
Following his sojourn in space with Kubrick, Dicken found work on the Michael Reeves feature Witchfinder General before lending his hand to When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth by Val Guest. Dicken and Jim Danforth shared a Best Special Visual Effects Oscar nomination for their work on the film.
Dicken went on to work on Ridley Scott’s Alien.

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.

Most movies about talking animals are sweet, family-friendly fare, but "Strays" is not most movies. This adult, R-rated comedy stars Will Ferrell as the voice of Reggie, a scruffy little terrier whose owner Doug (Will Forte) is an abusive jerk. Doug ends up abandoning Reggie in the big city, and the tenacious pup has to figure out how to survive as a stray. Thankfully, he has the help of some streetwise canines, voiced by Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, and Randall Park, and they help him navigate this strange new world.
The movie was produced by "The Lego Movie" creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have a great mind for comedy and mixing up animation with live-action, and written by "American Vandal" co-scribe Dan Perrault. If anyone can pull off an R-rated adult comedy about talking dogs, it's probably this crew.

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

Things stayed pretty much status quo over the box-office weekend as Spider-Man: No Way Home held the number one spot by $3.6 million and the rest of the top ten stayed pretty much the same as last week, save for the departure of one film and two titles flipping positions.
Spider-Man: No Way Home finished the weekend with $11.0 million. This allowed the film to creep closer to surpassing Avatar as the third highest domestic grossing film of all time as No Way Home stands at $735.9 million and Avatar sits at $760.5 million. Second place held steady with Scream pulling in $7.4 million to lift its three-week total to $62.1 million. The animated musical Sing 2 crooned well enough to remain in third place earning $4.8 million and increasing its six-week tally to $134.5 million. Meanwhile, the romance Redeeming Love was locked in at number four this weekend with $1.9 million. The film now lays claim to a two-week total of $6.5 million.

Zachary Levi has obviously never played a single down in an NFL football game, yet he’s playing two-time Mvp Kurt Warner in the new biopic American Underdog. Warner famously rose to prominence after spending time in the now-defunct Arena Football League and, for a time, working in a grocery store. Levi told us that, as […]

Over its final week, the Cannes Film Festival will be screening a few films that qualify as anthologies of one sort or another: Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” (five discrete stories under one umbrella concept) on Monday, the anthology “The Year of the Everlasting Storm” (seven different directors tackle life during the pandemic) on Wednesday and, to kick off the mini-trend, Kornél Mundruczó’s “Evolution” on Sunday.
“Evolution” is, in some ways, the most unified of the trio; it tells three stories from three generations of the same family, using similar techniques to different ends to explore the complicated history of Jews in and around Germany from the end of World War II to the present day. Shot in only 13 days during the pandemic and assembled largely from lengthy, unbroken shots, it feels like a small, experimental movie, but it’s also a meditation on trauma that cuts deep emotionally.

Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó is back at the Cannes Film Festival for the seventh time with his latest film, “Evolution.” Mundruczó reunites with “Pieces of a Woman” writer and collaborator Kata Wéber for this time-spanning exploration of three generations of a Jewish family. Exclusive to IndieWire, watch the trailer for the film below ahead of its bow in the Cannes Premiere section this weekend.
Here’s the official synopsis: “In ‘Evolution,’ acclaimed filmmaking team Kornél Mundruczó and Kata Wéber return with a powerful drama tracing three generations of a family, from a surreal memory of World War II to modern day Berlin, unable to process their past in a society still coping with the wounds of its history. Like the water that connects the episodes in this triptych, memory and identity are fluid, and how we relate to it can drown or buoy. The pain and stigma that trickles from Eva,...

Writer-director Lynn Roth instinctively knows how to pluck the heartstrings with her heartrending historical drama, “Shepherd: The Story of a Jewish Dog.” Her adaptation retains the wit and wisdom found within the pages of Asher Kravitz’s novel “The Jewish Dog,” whose unconventional conceit chronicling the Holocaust through the perspective of a German Shepherd lends itself to plenty of poetic and fantastical realism on screen. Yet the family-friendly feature all too frequently falls into conventional trappings that it unwittingly sets up for itself, particularly when it strays from the pup’s point of view.

Because of This One Flash of Insight, Ellen Burstyn Could Win a Second Oscar for ‘Pieces of a Woman’
With six Oscar nominations (and one win), seven Globe film nominations, eight Emmy nods (and two wins), Burstyn knows how to pick her roles. If she likes a script, she asks about the director. Only when she watched Darren Aronofsky’s “Pi” did she get why she should take the role of the drug-addicted mother in “Requiem for Dream.” “Ok, I get it, the guy’s a poet,” she said. “Twice in my life at the end of a screening there was a 10-minute standing ovation,” she said, “‘Spitfire Grill’ at Sundance and ‘Requiem for a Dream’ at Cannes.” It yielded another Oscar nod.
With Kornél Mundruczó’s “Pieces of a Woman,” she read the script by Hungarian playwright/screenwriter Kata Wéber, who drew upon her own silent reaction to a miscarriage. Burstyn watched Mundruczó’s Oscar submission “White God.” “I liked the script, investigated Kornél’s work,” Burstyn said.

For “White God” director Kornél Mundruczó and his wife, screenwriter Kata Wéber, their latest collaboration, “Pieces of a Woman,” has been more dramatic than your typical cinematic endeavor. Inspired by the couple’s own miscarriage, the story of a woman attempting to deal with her loss went from a play to a screenplay to a movie set in the United States starring Vanessa Kirby, Shia Labeouf, Ellen Burstyn, Benny Safdie, Sarah Snook, and Molly Parker.

“Pieces of a Woman” marks the English-language debut for director Kornél Mundruczó, who gained a passionate following with his breakout film “White God” in 2014. The Hungarian filmmaker has brought his latest project to the streaming giant Netflix, earning acclaim for his singular vision and an outstanding performance by Vanessa Kirby.
“Pieces of a Woman” is written by Kata Wéber, Mundruczó’s partner, based on their shared personal experience. The follows a Boston couple, Martha (Kirby) and Sean (Shia Labeouf), whose lives are changed irrevocably during a home birth at a midwife’s hands. Ellen Burstyn’s plays Martha’s mother.
In August, ahead of its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Martin Scorsese joined as an executive producer even before it had distribution. “It’s lucky to see a movie that takes you by surprise,” Scorsese says in a statement to Variety. “I was emotionally invested in it from the first scene,...

“Never go to bed angry” is an oft-repeated relationship rule, but few people bring up the necessary codicil, “You better be ready to process your feelings until the break of dawn.” The titular protagonists of “Malcolm & Marie,” played respectively by John David Washington and Zendaya, are more than prepared to take their current argument into the wee hours.
And while the script by writer-director Sam Levinson gives out before the dawn, the actors never do.
This black-and-white drama opens with the lead couple returning to their Malibu rental house following the premiere of writer-director Malcolm’s debut film. He’s ebullient; Marie isn’t saying much, but she’s got the facial expression of someone who’s very definitely Not Talking About Something. Malcolm finally notices and insists that she share what’s bothering her, and off they go.

Well, we made it through 2020 though it’s easy to forget that awful year is behind us. It’s cold outside, the vaccine is still making a slow rollout, and movie theaters remain closed in much of the country. Change is coming but it’s not here yet, so the only sensible reaction is to see what’s on TV. Fortunately, January will bring some enticing options. As in a normal year, it’s thinner than the end-of-the-year harvest season, but any month that includes a whole series dedicated to...

Netflix enters 2021 with a January slate that’s shaped by the lingering weirdness of 2020, as a month that’s typically full of (recently re-licensed) franchise movies and new seasons of “Sex Education” has mutated into a deep grab bag of second-tier Oscar contenders, festival pick-ups, and a handful of comfort food classics that could double as ideal New Year’s Day fare.
On the awards tip, Vanessa Kirby vehicle “Pieces of a Woman” is probably the most anticipated new arrival, and the actress makes the most of this unfathomably tough melodrama about a woman coping in the months after a stillbirth (she’s even better in next month’s “The World to Come”). Rahmin Bahrani’s “The White Tiger” is still under embargo, but his adaptation Aravind Adiga’s whirlwind novel about an Indian driver scraping his way up the social ladder will almost certainly be worth a look when...

Kornél Mundruczó’s film, starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia Labeouf as a young couple hit by tragedy, combines high trauma and horribly unconvincing stretches
Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó deserves our thanks for going somewhere very few film-makers want to go: out on a limb. Many a time, his neck has been risked and his arm has been chanced; he makes movies to challenge us. White God (2014) was a Hitchcockian nightmare about a mass uprising among all the dogs in a city, and Jupiter’s Mood (2017) was a fantasy superhero-parable about a Syrian refugee who gets the ability to fly after being shot by an immigration cop.
Most of his movies have been set in Hungary, but this new drama, scripted by Kata Wéber (who also wrote White God and Jupiter’s Moon), is his first English-language film, set in an indeterminate American city (but filmed in Quebec). It’s a vehement,...

Brink of Life: Mundruczó Hunts for the Grace in Grief with English Language Debut
One of Hungary’s most prolific arthouse auteurs of the last decade makes his English language debut with the Canadian/US co-production Pieces of a Woman. At first glance, it’s a far cry from the output which defines Kornél Mundruczó’s filmography, who often explores taboo or topical subject matters girded with either sensationalism or a touch of magical realism. Reuniting with scribe Kata Weber, who penned both 2014’s White God (read review) and Jupiter’s Moon (2017), this time around he drills into a sobering character study focused on tragedy and the splintering ripple effects of grief on a contemporary Boston couple already unsteady thanks to a class divide which has defined their equality in the eyes of others.…...

The Grammy for Song of the Year is strictly an award for songwriters, as opposed to Record of the Year, which is for a recording as a whole and goes to the artist, producers, and engineers. There’s usually significant overlap between the two categories, but big hits with relatively lightweight subject matter tend not to get writing plaudits. Preparations to be together for an unknown period of time (2020)
Hungary has announced its submission to the Oscar race. They have chosen the sophomore feature from new director Lili Horvát called Preparations to be Together For An Unknown Period Of Time. We love a memorable distinct title so this is up there with Lesotho's submission as the best-titled contender for Best International Feature this year. It's a romantic drama / mystery about a female surgeon that won prizes at several festivals including Philadelphia, Chicago, and Warsaw. Horvát began making short films in the Aughts and earlier this decade worked as a casting director, including on the acclaimed Hungarian Oscar submission White God (2014). This is the 29th announced submission that's from a female filmmaker so we're going to hit an all-time high percentage that's nearing gender parity. At this writing 42% of the entries come from female directors.

During a seminar at EnergaCamerimage Film Festival dedicated to their drama “Pieces of a Woman,” acquired by Netflix following its premiere in Venice, cinematographer Benjamin Loeb and Kornél Mundruczó praised their cast, led by Vanessa Kirby and Shia Labeouf playing a couple dealing with the tragic loss of their newborn child. Kirby, who left Italy with the Volpi Cup for best actress, has been the subject of Oscar buzz ever since.
“Vanessa read the script in July and she was in Budapest within 24 hours. She was really touched by it,” said Mundruczó.
“I knew her from ‘The Crown’ and I was a fan, but Princess Margaret was not that close to [the protagonist] Martha – my Martha. When we met, I noticed there is something very classic about her. She is like all the best European icons, like Cardinale or Schygulla, and that’s what this movie needed. Martha has a connection to someone she lost,...

A somewhat controversial selection of this year’s Venice Film Festival, Pieces of a Woman—the latest from White God director Kornél Mundruczó, and executive produced by Martin Scorsese—earned praise and scorn alike for its intense depiction of a failed pregnancy and its fallout. Good news: you can experience the close-quarters screaming matches when it hits Netflix on January 7, following an Oscar-qualifying theatrical debut on December 30. Thus, a trailer.
We were mostly positive on Pieces, our critic saying “there isn’t a moment that rings false. Constantly surprising and keeping the audience off-balance, perhaps its biggest rug-pull is its overall humanist outlook.”

Vanessa Kirby and Shia Labeouf lose their child in a tragic home birth in the new trailer for Pieces of a Woman, out January 7th on Netflix.
Directed by Kornél Mundruczó, the film stars Kirby and Labeouf as Martha and Sean, a couple whose baby dies while Martha is in labor in their Boston home. For Martha, the year that follows is filled with grief as she walks aimlessly through grocery stores and gazes at children on the train. Her mother (played by Ellen Burstyn) urges her to face the tragedy,...

Netflix has debuted a new trailer for the heartbreaking story ‘Pieces of a Woman’ starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia Labeouf. Check out our review from Venice right here.
Martha (Vanessa Kirby) and Sean (Shia Labeouf) are a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably when a home birth ends in unimaginable tragedy. Thus begins a yearlong odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with Sean and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife (Molly Parker), whom she must face in court. Directed by Kornél Mundruczó, written by Kata Wéber, and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Pieces Of A Woman is a deeply personal, searing, and ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.

Vanessa Kirby and Shia Labeouf have to face the harsh reality of losing their child shortly after its birth in the wrenching first trailer for the Netflix drama “Pieces of a Woman.”
Kirby in particular spars with her mother played by Ellen Burstyn, who fears that by not going to trial to sue their midwife (Molly Parker) after tragedy strikes, she’s not facing this grief head on.
“I am facing this. I am facing it! I Am Facing This,” Kirby bellows in the trailer. “Who cares about what they think. This is about me. This is about my life. This is me.”
Much of the trailer for the film showcases the devastating aftermath of Kirby giving birth, but what’s nearly overlooked in the trailer is the punishing first 30 minutes of the film shot in a single, unbroken take without music that shows Kirby’s pain spread across hours...

There’s a singular vision that director Kornél Mundruczó had in constructing “Pieces of a Woman,” and he had the full trust of his actors, particularly Vanessa Kirby and Ellen Burstyn. The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival where Kirby won the Volpi Cup for best actress. Just ahead of its Venice bow, Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese joined the film as an executive producer.
The phrase “it’s difficult to watch” is often spoken in various cinephile circles when referring to dour, less-than-pleasant movie experiences. I can recall having those same conversations around films like “Requiem for a Dream” and “Son of Saul.” Similar words have been uttered about Mundruczó’s portrait of loss and grief.
The role of Martha, a woman whose home birth ends in an unfathomable tragedy, demanded a lot of the 32-year-old Kirby. She’s received rave reviews for her performance, planting...

New section introduced in response to Covid-19 travel restrictions will screen 32 films of which 25 are world premieres.
Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced the full line-up for its 33rd edition, including the 32 titles selected for its Tokyo Premiere section, introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and international travel restrictions.
Unlike many major festivals this year, TIFF will be going forward with in-person screenings at its usual venues, but has replaced three of its major sections – Competition, Asian Future and Japanese Cinema Splash – with the new Tokyo Premiere section.

The Tokyo International Film Festival has unveiled a smaller, more compact selection for its 33rd edition (Oct. 31-Nov. 9). Exceptionally, this year’s Tokyo festival is held in partnership with Tokyo Filmex.
Three of the Tokyo festival’s traditional main sections – competition, Asian Future and Japanese Cinema Splash – are combined in into one, Tokyo Premiere 2020. And in place of the usual awards, only one, the Audience Award, will be bestowed.
The Tokyo Premiere section includes 32 films by both veteran and rising directors. Fully 25 are world premieres, and the remaining seven Asian premieres.
Ten Japanese films will be screened in Tokyo Premiere, including: festival opener “Underdog” by Masaharu Take (“100 Yen Love”); “Hold Me Back” by Akiko Ooku (“Tremble All You Want”); and “Come and Go,” a drama by Japan-based Malaysian filmmaker Lim Kah Wai.
Foreign films include: “February,” Bulgarian director Kamen Kalev’s drama that arrives as a Cannes Label title; “After Love,...

When Alicia Keys made her debut nearly 20 years ago, the primary engine of her music was musicianship itself — her ability to passionately yet effortlessly elide the distance between classicism and modernity, entwining genres and eras in her playing, singing, and writing. Over the years, as we’ve gotten to know her, the focus has shifted toward her own deeply-felt hopes, frustrations, and desires. She says her seventh album is her most authentic and personal to date, but for many listeners, its openness will be familiar.
