Babysitter in peril
moviefansme21 February 2015
This is a rather conventional home invasion horror story that fans of the genre will find familiar.

As horror goes, this has some thrills. The villains are scary, as is their pursuit of the inhabitants. And the house itself is a star, with rooms that are very visual and a plethora of corridors and hiding places. The lead character evolves from mousy and helpless to develop the grit to fight back.

The story follows a well-trodden path with a facade of originality. It gives no motivation to the villains, who take tremendous risks for little benefit. Law enforcement is laughably incompetent. Parents are predictably clueless. The kills aren't very gruesome and lack intensity and catharsis. Twists are predictable and unimpactful.

The story finishes predictably and satisfyingly enough--it's a journey, not a destination. But then, as if the filmmakers decided they wished they made the movie very differently, a whole separate scene is tacked onto the end that is completely over the top. Apparently the film found itself with an overabundance of casting extras and gory makeup to use up. Maybe the filmmakers are auditioning for a sequel.

Great beginning but steadily declines throughout
anushas-0109816 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie started out with a lot of potential. AJ King's character Kylie is very relatable. She's very pretty but not in a model sort of way that's distracting. She's a little insecure and and got pressured into sexual activity. She has a strict mother who doesn't understand what she's going through.

From the beginning of this movie we see a kind girl who is the victim of cruel bullies. The scene of Kylie crying in the shower was very well done. I was able to really feel for Kylie and step into her shoes.

The problem is this movie doesn't take the first act anywhere. When Kylie goes to babysit in a creepy house, we don't see her grow as a character when she is attacked by creepy intruders wearing pig masks.

Kylie is smart and pretty good at keeping her cool, but she doubts herself. I would have liked to see Kylie channel her anger from the bullying into self-confidence and growth.

Instead, we get Kylie on the phone with a suspicious sounding 911 operator for almost the whole middle of the movie.

The ending is even worse. The student who assaulted her (Markus) shows up for no good reason. There are a few highlights: Kylie was able to turn the tables on Markus and use her ingenuity in the truck to handle her attackers.

The highlights are good but still left me wanting a lot more.

The ending scene in the hospital was so unrealistic I wish I could unsee it. I could excuse one major plot hole (Markus showing up randomly) but not that hospital scene.

Berkshire county would be a much better movie if they used Kylie's trauma to help her develop over the course of the movie.

Instead, Berkshire County was written in a way that makes the first part unnecessary really. We don't need to learn about Kylie being bullied if it doesn't contribute to the rest of the plot.

In a nutshell, this movie didn't make use of its strong points. Maybe the director and writers were trying to make the plot unpredictable, but I found it discombobulating.

I would have preferred Markus and his girlfriend being behind the attack and Kylie getting revenge on them through her superior intelligence and character. This was what I was expecting but we got a bunch of fakeouts instead :(

Sometimes being predictable isn't so bad.

Above average home invasion flick
jackmeat13 October 2015
My quick rating - 5,2/10. A slightly above average home invasion movie that delivers on the scares. After a girl agrees to babysit on Halloween, a trick or treater shows up to turn her night into a living nightmare. The cat and mouse game between the woman(Alysa King) and the killers is well drawn out and leads to a bit more plot then the usual. A decent attempt at trying something a little different in a genre that is stale and really doesn't give a whole lot of wiggle room for creativity. I guess the message so far in these movies is "Dont answer the door for trick or treaters" since they may end up being there to distract you for someone else to slaughter you. That should make you feel better in 18 days from now...(depending on what day your community allows trick or treating)

Bad!

Why cast a woman aged in her early 30s in the lead role of a 17yo? That's just the start! Don't waste your time on this rubbish.

Just another genre ripoff.
ScreamQueer13 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I had high hopes for this film, honestly. I went in after hearing a recommendation from a friend whose opinion I usually trust. I don't know if he was playing a joke on me or what because this film was so bad I found it hard to watch. The storyline is a lazy blend of "When A Stranger Calls" and "You're Next", and it never once brings anything new to the genre. It's about as cookie-cutter and predictable as it gets. Confusing plot twists and irrational decisions made by the female lead whom, in my opinion, wasn't strong enough to carry the entire film on her own. She reminded me of Ali Larter only even more boring on camera. That and she was blatantly too old to be playing a 17 year old. I mean, Jesus guys... You really expect us to buy that? You've got to be kidding me!

On the technical side of things, the audio through-out the entire film seemed very flat and awkward as though it was never leveled properly. Almost all of the dialogue sounds hollow which leads me to believe the entire film was dubbed over. I suppose that can give some sort of explanation for the lack-luster performances? The location was pretty cool, but the footage looked a bit flat and blah and at times looked over-exposed. I feel like that may have been an artistic choice for certain shots but it looked cheap to me.

I would say the worst part of the whole thing to me is that there really seems to be no explanation for the events of the film. None at all! I'm sick of this whole "killing to kill" trend in horror cinema. At first it seemed creative but now it's just over-done and to be honest it just comes off as lazy! I'm not going to give away what happens at the end, who the killer is, or who survives but honestly... this ending had to be one of the absolute LEAST satisfying finales I've seen in the last ten years. I mean, come on guys! Do you really think the viewers are that stupid? Give us something that makes us think. Surprise us for once! Personally, I'm getting sick and tired of the same old story with the same old plot twists and the same old shots of a masked killer stalking through a house while a hot young female hides out of sight with her hand over her mouth. We've seen it all before. Give us something new, dammit!

This movie deserves the biggest fart of all time. From the acting to the cinematography, the storyline and the plot twist... This is just horrible and I do not recommend watching, a definite waste of time!

None of it makes sense
mamalbg8 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
None of the pieces of this movie fit together. The whole party and BJ scene doesn't have anything at all to do with the later part of the movie. Who were these people in the masks ? Why were they there ? Who were the other people kidnapped? How were they there? What drug did these masked people use that would allow everyone in the truck to wake up at the same moment despite being knocked out hours apart?

Even at the end we have zero idea why they are after her , what their bigger picture is , what the scars are about ( unless I zoned out for that part )

It wasn't even the scary nameless killer. It was stupid and confusing

This little piggy went...
Krackoon6 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Boo, boo, boo, all the way through.

'Berkshire County' is your typical home invasion, babysitter nonsense. The first few moments of the film makes sure we never care about the possible victim. Making her out to be your typical mindless high school sleaze. That role is played by Alysa King, who is supposed to a high school student, but looks to be in her mid to late twenties. That's usually how these films go about casting, though, since finding a younger actress who can't act, isn't nearly as easy as finding an older actress who can't act. I guess? One of my favorite lines in the film, is toward the end, when our damsel in distress threatens 'Marcus' to report his video as distributing pornography of a minor... Fairly empty threat from a woman who looks like she was around for the release of Duran Duran's 'Hungry Like The Wolf' hit single.

The film is a copy of many previous invasion films, such as 'The Strangers,' and 'You're Next,' but reminds me mostly of 'When a Stranger Calls 2006.' The reasons will be obvious while you're viewing the film. Since the film is called 'Berkshire County,' an obvious breeding ground for hillbillies, you can forget about any originality from the killers. They'll be sporting the usual pig masks, because, well, that's what all hillbillies do, right? Luckily, our sleazy victim manages to get through to the local police, where they then dispatch their finest two officers. One looks younger than the 40 year old actress playing the lead role - and the other looks like a night watchman at your local museum. You can imagine how this ends, right?

Random Ramblings of a Madman: I've always been curious, how do hillbillies make pig sounds as well as they do? I try and try, but I can't seem to get enough bass in my voice. It just seems so easy for them.

Very poor effort
clars-843-10261321 October 2015
The only horror and crime about this movie is that it was ever made.

This movie is just plain awful. This movie borrows so many story lines from other good movies, such as Halloween, the strangers, the purge and when a stranger calls mixes it up and vomits it up into this poor showing. The acting is average and the dialogue is even worse. This is only trumped by plot holes and characters making highly unlikely decisions even (even for a horror movie).

Thirty minutes in and I watched the remainder of the movie on double speed only occasionally returning to normal speed at what I thought might be crucial moments only to speed up again. The ending of the movie tries to shock but fails miserably even in that. This movie is constantly horrible and I would recommend not wasting your time on it.

Average
markvdv-9704927 October 2015
The movie was pretty average. The story was pretty predictable there were some twists through out the movie but everyone could have guessed those. the beginning was unnecessary and didn't add anything to the story.

The setting was classic but was pretty well done and scary , a big mansion with lots of rooms and hiding places inside of the woods isolated from the city.

The bad guys looked scary but there is no info given about who they really are and what their motives are to kill. In a movie like the Wrong turn you know the bad guys are inbred, live in a small house in the woods and kill people to eat them because they are cannibals. in this movie you just have to guess all these things about the bad guys.

I really enjoyed there was no over the top gore. people just got killed and that's it just some blood but no whole waves of blood coming out of someone

The ending was really over the top and didn't make sense to me, it's just like they were too lazy to make a proper ending

like I said the beginning was unnecessary , the story is predictable but the movie doesn't fail at being thrilling and scary and is not too bad I recommend to watch it but don't expect a masterpiece

Move along, kids. Nothing to see here.
redrobin62-321-20731125 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. What a waste of time was this. "Berkshire County" has no redeemable values other than the county it was filmed in is beautiful to the eyes. Other than that it wasn't worth the effort.

The writer and director of this film don't have an original bone in their body. Everything in "Berkshire County" can be seen anywhere else - the pig mask (the "Saw" movies), the sliced throat (every other horror film since "Long Kiss Goodnight"), and of course, every horror cliché in the book - the idiot cops being getting killed off summarily, the phone that suddenly doesn't work, the scared-to-death heroine who suddenly grows a pair and takes off the bad guys single handedly, the killer is still alive, of course, etc. etc.

I'm beginning to think that horror films on the level of "The Exorcist" will never be made again. That's too bad. With all the killings going on in the world you'd think filmmakers would draw inspiration from them. I guess not. Don't waste your time with this movie. I tortured myself already so you don't have to. You're welcome.

Not sure why the ratings are so low for this one
savannahlynnhill25 January 2017
I've been watching a ton of mediocre to terrible thriller/horror movies lately and this one was a nice fresh surprise. Perhaps it's because I'm a female and it was directed by a female. I don't understand why the other reviewers are calling the main character a dumb sleaze from the first scene and that made them not care about her? It was clear that she was not that type of girl from the start. The bullying and slut-shaming she received made her more likable for me because it was undeserved.

Her day started out pretty awful and then she went on the babysitting gig from hell. That house was really interesting and different from the classic two-story suburban home we're used to seeing in usual babysitting thrillers. From the moment the killers made their first real appearance, I felt extreme tension throughout the rest of the movie. There were definitely some fresh twists with these villains. Also, the female lead never made those common mistakes you usually see in these types of movies, she moved quickly and used smart tactics against the psycho killers. She started out as a mousy doormat and became a real fighter by the finale.

At the end of the credits there is a disclaimer that says it was inspired by actual events but the characters' names have been changed etc... That was a surprise to me and made me like the film even more.

Not bad!
K_Rad8826 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't mind this film at all as I love a good masked slasher but I have a few issues - even though I'm like 7 years too late to the party:

1. How did Marcus know where to find her? She didn't tell him?

2. How did the cops come at all if all the calls were rerouted to those pig people? Did they organise cops to come just for funsies or what?

Anyway, as far as slashers go it's pretty good and the effects are decent, for 2014 it's one I wish I'd seen at the time or I may not have been so harsh!

This movie was a chore to watch. I mean what was the premise? It's a shame too because the effects and budget were decent, and why was this movie all over the place that as no ryme not reason no plot ,and after all this 80 or so minutes your going to spend watching this your going to get some so called shock ending that makes no sense whatsoever. These endings are supposed to make the viewer think and hit Google for answers as to why this is what it is and so on. The ending was so bad that I don't even want to understand what the point of it was. Don't bother with this one because it's 84 minutes you won't get back.

Horror/thriller
leeg-114469 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
It did have elements of already released (and some very old)thrillers/horrors like the purge, vacancy and others so nothing new. looking past some obvious blunders and somethings that didn't make any sense, I took it for what it was, a low budget horror. I must admit that I actually enjoyed the movie however that was until the last 5 minutes. What a shame, it went from a solid 6 out of 10 to a 3, maybe the writers were thinking of making a sequel. The acting wasn't to bad, the story as mentioned above has been done to death. some really poor writing pops up every now and then(some characters decisions at times are retarded). All in all it was a movie that had potential a pity about the ending what a waste.

low value horror
SnoopyStyle7 December 2017
Kylie Winters gives a blow job at a costume party. She is secretly filmed which is shared among her classmates. The guy is a douche and his girlfriend isn't happy either. Kylie reluctantly takes a babysitting job on Halloween night. People in pig masks come trick or treating. It's the start of a harrowing night.

The acting is relatively fine for a low budget indie horror. Kylie is pretty good. Marcus is too annoying as an idiot. He is so much better as a smarter scheming villain. His kill could have been done much better. The 911 call is an obvious twist. It would be better to accentuate the moment when she decides to save the kids instead of saving herself. The pig masks are great and the gore is functional. The filmmaking style is relatively flat. This is low value horror which isn't quite original enough, other than the pig masks. I do like the masks.

On tape
kosmasp13 November 2015
It starts off really good. There is a lot of drama, there's a lot of not being able to do anything because of a "mistake" (though nowadays, when everyone could film you at any second, who could say they never did something they'd never wanted anyone else to know about, let alone it being recorded).

Having said that, after the initial "travel" to the country, the movie seems to kind of letting go of that premise, which is a shame. It doesn't work that good and the whole tape thing almost plays no role in what happens after a certain point. Not as much as it could have that is. Some twists are predictable and foreseeable, but it's still maintains a level of quality until the end. Decent acting for a horror movie too

An OK movie to kill your time with.
amardikanto23 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
If you're looking for an action and gory movie in which the main character fight back with cool and tactical action (like You're Next or I Spit on Your Grave), this is definitely not the one for you. This is a thriller movie with mild touch on the action and goriness. The main character is not quite a fighter, I think she is just lucky. The hide and seek scenes are quite exciting, but too bad, it lingers for too long.

For those of you who pay extra attention on the lines and the acting, this movie would be a waste of your time. But somehow the twist at the end (watch out, there are several twists!) prevent me to rate this movie below five. With this ending, it definitely opens for a sequel, for which I request: please upgrade the quality.

I'd say, watch this movie only if you run out of full-action movies.

All About The Makeup
mdelbiondi16 July 2015
This movie was awesome, I was impressed by the makeup. Well done! Most films have an inability to portray a good scare but this was great. Special effects were good! A classic thriller with some of the best chase scenes, the script is good, the performances are good, if you're a fan of suspense, you've probably watched this movie.

Kylie Winters, a bullied and self-loathing teen, reluctantly agrees to babysit at an isolated country mansion on Halloween night. When a small boy in a pig mask appears at the door trick- or-treating, Kylie's night transforms into a horrifying and violent cat-and-mouse game. She must go beyond what she ever thought possible if she and the children are to survive the night.

mediocre home-invasion
trashgang12 November 2015
Mixed emotions about this flick. Why, because the story is so strange. let me explain. It starts of with the main lead Kylie (Alysa King) being abused by a guy. She has to give him a blow job which she finally does but is being filmed. Of course , being underaged, the whole school is laughing with her and she's being bullied about it by her friends naturally. Going home her mother tells her that the thing she performed will follow her for her entire life. It's halloween night and she going to babysit. Yes, you do read it correct, from the school we do move over to the babysitting without ever returning to what happened at the party. So it's in fact two stories being used in one flick.

The babysitting does take a while until the door bell goes and things go awry. From there on it turns from mediocre into a home-invasion flick. A bit of cat and mouse and a bit of stabbing with a twist towards the end.

Was it that bad, not at all, a bit strange with the first 15 minutes but from then on it slowly moves into a real horror.

Unsympathetic protagonist
Leofwine_draca12 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
TORMENTED is another cheap independent horror film set in a single building. A young woman is having a bad day, but things are about to be put into perspective when she finds herself menaced by a kid in a scary mask. Yep, it's another weak retread of the whole THE STRANGERS set up, with segments of ILS (THEM) added to the mix. Sadly, what follows is entirely predictable and routine, matters not helped by the unsympathetic protagonist.
