Finally, a religion we can all get behind.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a good man just trying to introduce order to a chaotic world is wrongfully, violently, and publicly executed just for being who he is, only to return from the dead a few days later stronger, smarter, more capable than ever before, and practically immortal; he then uses this newfound power to “save” humanity from itself by separating the righteous from the wicked.
Likely you stopped me a line or two in because of course this sounds familiar, it’s perhaps the most told story in the history of the world: the Christ story. Only, I wasn’t describing the most-definitely-not-white Christian savior, I was describing Detroit Police Sergeant Alex Murphy, better known to you as RoboCop.
Which one is which?
If you think about it — and lots of people have for a while now — their stories are pretty parallel, minus...

Adult Swim is clearly trying to compete with MTV by shocking people. They have a new series called Black Jesus. It will feature an African American Jesus who lives in the ghetto and deals with all kind of people, including gangs. It will feature foul mouths and violence in the series, which is exactly what people are upset about. American Family Association spent today making their feelings very known in time before the August 7th premier takes place. Here is what they had to say about the show, which you can view the trailer down below.
The depiction of Jesus swearing and “using violent behavior is a new low, The blasphemous, irreverent and disrespectful show depicts him living in Compton Gardens and makes a mockery of the Lord. The garbage that passes for entertainment continues to disturb us, Even the three-minute trailer was too vile to watch, with multiple uses...

How's this for ambition? In American Jesus, director Aram Garriga endeavors to survey most of contemporary U.S. Christianity, in both its smallest sects and its brigades of evangelicals keen to hasten the end of days, all in the time it takes the eyewear shop at your local mall to whip up a pair of glasses. It's too much topic, too little film, but what he gets to is arresting. His documentary is a restless, sunnily shot, one-thing-after-another travelogue of the peculiarities of American worship and belief, and he could have pulled a full movie from most of its many, many pit stops: a West Virginia roadhouse of snake handlers and boogie-woogie piano; '80s Christian alt-rocker Steve Taylor's bizarre satirical anthem "I Blew Up the Clinic Real Good"; the entrepreneur behi...

When an American tells you that they're a Christian, you might need to ask them what denomination, and the answer you get might not be one of the more common ones. In his second feature documentary, Spanish directer Aram Garriga travels across the United States to find the unique, the odd, and the sometimes arguably baffling Christian sects that find ther niche in a country perhaps too obsessed with religious worship and devotion. Fascinating, open and non-judgemental, American Jesus is an amazing film, the kind that only an outsider could make.Garriga introduces the audience to various members of these sects, which are various: a cowboy church, a surfer church, one started by a biker, another that focuses on showing feats of strength as evidence of God,...
