The summer festival season is off and running and this morning the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival announced their premiere selections for this July’s 2022 edition. Outside of it’s long running Crystal Globe competition, Kviff revealed a new section, the Proxima Competition, for younger and first-time filmmakers. Eastern European films always dominate Kviff, but, intriguingly, this year will feature Jake Paltrow’s latest endeavor, “June Zero.” His last narrative directorial effort was “Young Ones” in 2014.

Boston Dynamics, the Google-owned company that is in the business of creating some truly weird and awesome robots, has just released video of their newest weird robot, called Handle. Handle can lift 100 pounds, travel at 9 mph, and jump four feet in the air. Unlike many of the company’s robots, which walk on two or four feet (that’s bipedal or quadrupedal for all you smarties out there), Handle goes on wheels. And also jumps. It’s pretty cool. Like previous models from Boston Dynamics, Handle shows excellent balance and maneuverability, and can do some pretty cool spin moves, which is very important for a six-and-a-half foot robot.
Last we heard, Google was trying to sell Boston Dynamics, so if you are a secret billionaire, you might want to make a purchase. Check out Handle in action in the video below.

There's a certain popular image of the dangerous American 1980s that was at least partly defined by the cinema of Brian De Palma, whether that’s the narcotics fuelled Miami nights of Scarface, the paranoia of Blow Out or the steamy mystery of Dressed to Kill and Body Double. De Palma earned a reputation as the bad boy of New Hollywood; this new documentary from Directors Noah Baumbach (Mistress America, While We’re Young) and Jake Paltrow (Young Ones) charts that development from De Palma’s early work, to 70’s success with Carrie, through to his famous 1980’s and more contemporary work. Judging from the new official trailer, De Palma seems to present a candid, incisive and unrepentant conversation with the filmmaker. Check out the new poster and trailer from StudioCanal here: De Palma is released 23 September 2016...

We revisit Drop Dead Fred, starring the late, great Rik Mayall...
Hey, snotfaces, what do you get when you mix Mary Poppins and Beetlejuice? Look no further than 1991's Drop Dead Fred, a fantasy comedy about an imaginary friend, which turns out to be about a woman's mental breakdown after years and years of emotional abuse.
If you're of a certain age and, much like Phoebe Cates' protagonist Elizabeth at the beginning of the movie, you haven't seen Fred since you were a child, you may remember it as a childhood staple that you were probably a bit young to be watching and for many, it might have been your introduction to Mayall's comic stylings. However, also like Lizzie, Fred's anarchic behaviour has different implications when you meet him again in adulthood.
He first re-emerges after Lizzie has lost the three major totems of adulthood - her marriage,...

She may feel more comfortable as a supporting player, but Blythe Danner proves she can hold her own as a lead in new film I’ll See You in My Dreams
“I like my coffee,” says Blythe Danner, shaking her head as if embarrassed. “I can’t wake up unless I have it. I’m still not quite awake, in fact.” The 72-year-old actor makes sure she gets cream with her coffee – “it’s the one bugaboo I have” – even if her request for it, after she is initially brought milk, resembles an apology. But Danner’s self-effacing demeanour is no act. Over the course of our chat, the actor continually does her best to to deflect attention to something, or someone, else. It seems to put her at ease.

Alternating between indie-circuit hits (Young Ones) and blockbuster hits (Maleficent), Elle Fanning has worked steadily to emerge out of older sister Dakota’s Hollywood shadow, and she’ll be aiming squarely for the hearts and minds of the Ya crowd in upcoming project All the Bright Places. This morning, producers have announced that Fanning will team with Youth in Revolt director Miguel Arteta for the pic, an adaptation of Jennifer Niven’s novel.

Said Arteta:

Greg Davies has reflected on his "difficult year" after the loss of both his father and his friend Rik Mayall, who played his on-screen dad.
Davies starred as Mayall's son in the Channel 4 sitcom Man Down, before the Young Ones star died at the age of 56 last year.
"My dad died a couple of months after Rik, it was a difficult year," Davies told the Radio Times.
"It's a unique set of circumstances. It was incredibly sad. I was very close to my dad."
Davies explained that he would not consider hiring another actor to replace Mayall on Man Down.
"Rik was the dream casting for me. He was a childhood hero of mine, and I look like him. And he was beloved, as you saw when he died," he said.
"The adoration poured out for him. So never for a second did I think, 'That's Ok, we'll just get another dad in'.

What will February bring to Netflix? "House of Cards" returns for its much awaited third season, but not until Feb. 27. If you can't wait for your Kevin Spacey fix until then, "Now: In the Wings on a World Stage" (2014), a documentary of Spacey starring in a production of Shakespeare's "Richard III," is available on Feb. 1.
And the 2004 "King Arthur," starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley, isn't exactly Shakespearean, but look at how many great actors -- like Mads Mikkelsen, Ioan Gruffudd, Hugh Dancy and Joel Edgerton -- have gone on to much bigger things.
You can also stream "Joe," one of Nicolas Cage's best films in recent years; the overlooked indie "The Brothers Bloom" with Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz; and the barely-in-theaters thriller "The Two Faces of January," starring Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst.
Here's a much larger rundown of what's new on Netflix in February 2015, provided by Netflix.

Netflix has just released their lists of what films and TV shows we will see added in February…and what films and TV shows will vanish.
First, the good news: quite a few classic and popular TV shows are making the grade on the streaming service, including the first five seasons of Mash, Hawaii 5-0, and the new season of House of Cards. New additions to the film list include RoboCop, The Brothers Bloom, and Gimme Shelter. While there’s not a lot of quality stuff on offer, there are at least a few new films and TV shows that we can enjoy on the Netflix streaming service.
Now for the bad news: quite a number of favorites are going to vanish from Netflix come February 1. Among these are several James Bond films, Zodiac, Jane Eyre, and Dredd. The TV shows fare even worse, with tons of BBC shows expiring,...

Gone Girl Obviously this is the week's top title, what with the Blu-ray coming with its very own "Amazing Amy" book, though I have to assume the David Fincher commentary is the big draw here for most people. However, there has to be a special edition of this title coming out at some point considering other than the commentary this is pretty much a bare bones release. If anything this is a title I'd love to see Criterion get their hands on down the line, though I think Fox will take the opportunity for a special edition release in the future before that ever happens.
A Walk Among the Tombstones This was an a'ight movie, nothing I would necessarily write home about, though it thankfully wasn't just another Taken-style movie as director Scott Frank was definitely going for something a little old school, noirish... it just didn't entirely work in the end.

Powerfully conveying the enthrallingly complex emotions of a diverse group of family, friends, neighbors and colleagues during a dire national emergency like a severe and long-running drought can be a challenge for many filmmakers to take on. But versatile writer-director Jake Paltrow effortlessly showcases how such a natural disaster can bring some people closer together to work through their desperate situation, while also harrowingly driving former allies apart, in his sci-fi action movie, ‘Young Ones,’ which is set to be released on January 13 on DVD. What was even more intriguing about the filmmaker’s study of those motivations is that he compellingly presented the drama, which premiered at the 2014 [ Read More ]

2014 has been a busy and eclectic year for the preternaturally gifted Elle Fanning. The 16-year-old actress has starred in the second highest grossing blockbuster of the year (“Maleficent”) and one of the most successful stop-motion animation releases of all time (“The Boxtrolls”), but she’s kept diversity alive by staring in humanistic Sundance dramas like “Young Ones” and Oscillioscope’s latest, “Low Down.” She’s already been on the radar for top-shelf directors like J.J. Abrams (“Super 8”), David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), and Cameron Crowe (“We Bought A Zoo”), and respected auteurs like Sofia Coppola (“Somewhere”), Francis Ford Coppola (“Twixt”), and Sally Potter (the deeply underrated “Ginger & Rosa”). While the general public might not be hip to her yet, the secret is out on Fanning, perhaps the most talented actress of her generation; a young Meryl Streep who just keeps steadily adding to her impressive CV.

The Complete Jacques Tati (Criterion Collection) Every year Criterion seems to put together a collection of films that stands above the rest. Last year it was the Zatoichi collection of films, this year they celebrate Jacques Tati with a collection of his six feature films -- Jour de fecte, Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, Mon oncle, PlayTime, Trafic and Parade -- along with seven Tati-related short films. Unfortunately I was not sent a review copy, but once the Barnes & Noble, 50% off Criterion sale rolls around next month I think I'll have to add this one to my Christmas request list the same way I did with Zatoichi last year. As for my thoughts on the films, I personally love Hulot's Holiday and PlayTime, the latter of which you can read my review of the previous Criterion Blu-ray edition here, though as DVD Beaver has already shown, the transfer on this new release looks much different.

Water has run dry, robots carry the workload, and children grow up far too quickly in the desolate future of Jake Paltrow’s Young Ones.
This gripping familial drama follows three men at different stages in their life as they navigate a haunting, dangerous world where the scarcity of water has forced the creation of a unique environment. It is part Wild West, part post-apocalyptic future, and all parts arid and hot. It’s so effectively atmospheric, in fact, that you feel like a drink of water or a shower as you watch.
The patriarch of our central family is Ernest Holm, played magnificently (as per usual) by Michael Shannon. He is a protector of his two children (Kodi Smit-McPhee and Elle Fanning), imposing and determined, making a living working supply routes and tending desperately to his farm land. Ernest doesn’t hesitate to do away with two apparent water thieves as the film begins,...

Composer Nathan Johnson on Scoring ‘Young Ones,’ ‘Kill the Messenger,’ and Vinyl Release of ‘Looper’
Composer Nathan Johnson is a master at making off-beat and imperfect instruments sound distant yet accessible on a number of vastly different narratives (see: Brick, The Brothers Bloom, Looper). His latest work is a pair of scores for films that were both released this month, Jake Paltrow‘s neo-western Young Ones and the journalistic thriller Kill the Messenger starring Jeremy Renner. Johnson has also been producing a couple albums and […]...

Audiences may be overwhelmed by the countless on-screen portrayals of a bleak future, but the sci-fi gem, Young Ones makes for a worthwhile view thanks to a compelling story, gorgeous cinematography and a unique vision.
Set in the stark aftermath of a water crisis, the film centers on the few who have managed to survive it. Ernest (Michael Shannon) and his two children, Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Mary (Elle Fanning), struggle to protect their farm from bandits, but an even greater threat may lie in the actions of Mary’s boyfriend, Flem (Nicholas Hoult).
Last week at the NYC press day for Young Ones, I had the chance to sit down for an exclusive interview with Smith-McPhee and director Jake Paltrow to discuss with them the inspiration for their new film and its dystopian theme.

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult got to know each other very well on the remote South African set of their new film Young Ones. You have to see how these two interact. It's adorable! At around 2:38, Elle is beyond cute when Nicholas gives her a hard time for never having seen any of his movies - not even About a Boy!

In director Jake Paltrow’s new film “Young Ones,” "Boardwalk Empire" veteran Michael Shannon plays Ernest Holm, a father in a futuristic wasteland tasked with keeping his family together in their quest for water – a scarce resource around town. The film co-stars Nicholas Hoult as his rival and Elle Fanning as his defiant daughter, and blends elements of sci-fi and westerns in look and tone. Shannon’s performance is that of the stoic dad, trying to make ends meet, while...

The relationship between young mutants Mystique and the Beast was a major storyline in X-Men: First Class. However, this plot arc was dropped from X-Men: Days of future Past. For various reasons, the romance angle didn't fit into the last sequel. However, we may see more of the Beast & Mystique relationship in the next film.
Mystique and Hank were quite an item in X-Men: First Class but if you expected to see more of that relationship in X-Men: Days of future Past, you must have been disappointed. Director Bryan Singer and the writers couldn’t work the storyline into the time-travel plot arch of the sequel film.
That wasn’t always the case. While doing an interview with MTV about his new film Young Ones, Nicholas Hoult—who plays Hank McCoy/the Beast—revealed that there were originally some scenes in the earlier drafts of Days of Future Past which...

Young Ones
USA, 2014
Written and directed by Jake Paltrow
If ever you should find yourself needing to explain the difference between a film being “well-shot” and “well-directed”, Exhibit A should be the new indie release Young Ones. Writer-director Jake Paltrow has created an intriguing world and spared not one cent out of his indie-sized budget to make it beautiful, but he doesn’t direct it well enough to avoid some storytelling problems.
Paltrow (yes, he is Gwyneth’s brother) imagines a near future in which droughts like the one currently ravaging California have become so intense that the rule of law itself has begun to break down in the American Southwest. In this world Michael Shannon plays a father trying to raise two children, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee and Elle Fanning, against the specter of his wells running dry and the intrusive advances of a local man played by Nicholas Hoult.

The below is a rerun of our interview from the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Part western, part science fiction, wholly original—it’s not easy to pin down—writer/director Jake Paltrow’s latest film, “Young Ones,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (read our review here), is worth an examination. Ernest Holm (a gaunt Michael Shannon) and his two teenage children, Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Mary (Elle Fanning), resolutely hold onto their farmland in a drought-ravaged near future, stubbornly believing that the water will soon return. (In a town that shares an odd optimism, “Pray for rain” is a common greeting.) Paltrow imbues this landscape—using South Africa as a stand-in for the anonymous American West—with futuristic touches, including both a robotic mule and medical advances that keep the family’s wife/mother (Aimee Mullins) alive. Not too far away, water flows freely in an overcrowded city, glimpses...

Jake Paltrow's Young Ones is a dustbowl western with a sci-fi twist. It looks and sounds like the past: The plains are barren, the people wear cheap cotton, and the score, by Nathan Johnson -- all vibrating, beautiful melancholy -- could be layered over any John Ford flick. But when their donkey snaps a limb, peddlers Ernest (Michael Shannon) and his son Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) shoot the animal and replace it with a robot, a high-stepping, spindly machine that looks like a pickup truck on legs.
That robot is easier to love than most of the humans, who've grown hard in this savage imagining of the West where water is more precious than oil. The earth is parched. Everything from the brush to the hills is tumbleweed-beige, as is Shannon's face and hair and funny car...

In addition to reintroducing younger versions of the mutants known as Beast and Mystique, X-Men: First Class also did its part to establish a new dynamic between the two characters. Bonding over the fact that they couldn't show their true faces in public, the two of them sparked a romantic relationship that wound up getting kind of interrupted by the Cuban Missile Crisis. Unfortunately, this connection didn't really get to be explored at all in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but that wasn't actually always the case. Speaking with MTV in promotion of his new film Young Ones, X-Men star Nicholas Hoult revealed that there were originally some scenes in Days of Future Past that further explored the relationship between Beast and Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique, but that they were ultimately cut due to pacing and continuity issues with the rest of the story. Explained the young actor, "There were...

Last week, I reviewed Aut?mata, which was a post-apocalyptic science fiction film that presented nothing new in terms of ideas or themes. It treaded on familiar territory and made it a bore to watch. Science fiction films need to reflect human nature in an interesting way to be successful, otherwise they become very easy to tune out. In comes Young Ones, a film that uses a near future of a massive water shortage to explore man's pride, greed, and struggle for survival. The film is not wholly successful in its ambitions, shifting away from its themes midway through into a more traditional revenge film, but with the help of a quartet of terrific performances, the film is never something Aut?mata was: boring. A rather subdued Michael Shannon plays Ernest Holm, the patriarch of a family who is clinging onto a 20-acre farm, despite a drought that has dried...

Plot: In a future where water is the most sought after resource, a farmer and his two children try to make due, although the emergence of his daughter's boyfriend will thoroughly hamper any plans he has. Review: A promising set-up, a bevy striking images and a good cast should be enough to put Jake Paltrow's Young Ones over the top, but its flawed and familiar story - not to mention a very uneven approach to telling said story - is the film's ultimate undoing. A semi-futuristic,...

Young at Heart: Paltrow’s Sci-Fi Western is All Dried Up
Dystopic draught heralds the end of times for the parable that serves as Jake Paltrow’s sophomore effort, Young Ones. A mash-up of classic Western and ambitious sci-fi, the whole is not the sum of its parts, fluctuating between flashes of stylized visual flourishes in the midst of a quickly withering narrative, Paltrow seems to squander the abundant opportunities laid out by the promising set-up. It’s this kernel of potential that makes the film seem even more of a disappointment, methodically churning into a stagnant trench of recycled Greek tragedy themes, a familial saga of vengeance, murder, and inheritance never coalescing into a comfortable stride.
In a world gone dry, surviving members of the human race do the best they can to eke out an existence. The oceans having evaporated long ago, families of farmers do what...

The actor appeared on Good Day New York to promote his new film Young Ones with director Jake Paltrow (yep, that's Gwyneth Paltrow's brother, which only makes this even more interesting since J.Law is now dating Gwyneth's ex-hubby Chris Martin), and in the middle of their interview, the reporter decides to bring up the hacking.
She began by saying, "Speaking of friends, Jennifer Lawrence, she's been making a lot of news lately because of the pictures that were hacked and I think they might have been pictures that were sent to you." Yep, she went there, and kept rambling about the topic until she finally gave Hoult a chance to respond.
Staying cool, calm and collected, Hoult simply responded with, "It's shocking that things...

Blending sci-fi and western tropes in a wholly unique, sunbaked setting, "Young Ones" will likely be one of the most distinct movies you'll see this fall. Kristen Stewart was all smiles on Monday night when she attended the New York premiere of her latest project, Camp X-Ray, at the Crosby Street Hotel. While she worked her red carpet magic with her costar Peyman Moaadi, we spotted her friend Nicholas Hoult making a discreet entrance into the screening. Nicholas, who is in the Big Apple to promote his new movie, Young Ones, didn't pose for photographs and went by relatively unnoticed. Kristen and Nicholas have forged a friendship after they worked on Equals together over the Summer. The pair was spotted exploring Japan during filming, and they even took part in the Als Ice Bucket Challenge together. The pair had a connection before they started working together, as Kristen is close to Nicholas's ex-girlfriend Jennifer Lawrence.

So far in his career Nicholas Hoult has more or less played nice guys or heartthrobs. Heck, even when he’s playing a monster, like Beast in X-Men: First Class or a zombie in Warm Bodies, he’s still a nice-guy heartthrob. That’s not exactly the case in his latest movie, the grim sci-fi tale Young Ones. Directed by Jake Paltrow (Gwyneth Paltrow's younger brother), Young Ones depicts a future in which water has become an exceedingly rare resource on Earth. Its absence has changed not just the face of the planet, which is now covered in dust and dirt, but the way societies function and people interact with one another. This particular story revolves around a family (Michael Shannon, Kodi Smit McPhee and Elle Fanning) just trying to keep things going in this new...
