What is it? Jeanne and Jean are a young couple in love, but after their fairy tale wedding the pair are brought before the local lord to make an offering. He forces himself on her instead before sharing her with his court, and when even her new husband turns his back on her she finds pained, messy comfort with a devil-sent imp who offers to help in exchange for her soul.
Why buy it? Eiichi Yamamoto’s early ’70s slice of psychedelia, erotica, and still-relevant commentary is a beautifully disturbing descent into our shared history of sexual violence, oppression, and the abuse of authority. If it sounds heavy, well, it is — it’s also extremely graphic with watercolor frames and hand-drawn animation that capture the atrocities with gorgeously imaginative imagery. It...

No Men Beyond This Point was the final film I saw at Tiff last year, and it was one of my favourites of the festival. A mockumentary that imagines a world where men are an endagered gender, it combined a clever reimagining of world history combined with family politics and hilarious debates about the roles of men and women, sex, and who has to do the washing up. In the early 21st century, women now reproduce asexually, and give birth only to girls. Andrew Meyers, 37 years old, is the youngest man on the planet. He works as a nanny, enjoying his care of children, but becomes an unwilling pawn in the fight for mens' rights, all the while struggling with his own mixed feelings...

The 1950's. Virgin births, once considered a last ditch effort on the part of women to explain an indiscretion, are on the rise. They've become so commonplace that scientists the world over begin to think that there might be some scientific explanation for the phenomenon. It's soon discovered that through a leap in the revolutionary rung, women have begun to reproduce asexually. The ball begins to roll: men continue to die off, women stop getting married, asexual reproduction means no transfer of the Y chromosome which means no male babies are being born and soon, we end up at the present of No Men Beyond This Point.

Jonathan Gross, the president of the Canadian distributor, announced the rebrand on Tuesday 23 years after launching the company.
The full–service distributor owns a catalogue of hundreds of film and TV titles and has ongoing distribution agreements with Magnolia, Film Movement, Kino Lorber and Synapse, among others.
Upcoming films and TV releases include Sundance and Hot Docs Selection Tickled, Tiff selection Sunset Song, Participant’s new investigative series Truth & Power, and Canadian theatrical releases No Men Beyond This Point, and First Round Down, now in post-production.
“This is mostly cosmetic because the word ‘Video’ has become somewhat quaint in these meme-orable times” said Gross. “Vsc was actually concocted in a hurry because we started the company on short notice by buying the contents of Video Entertainment Corp. in Kitchener.
“It was a gamble. Back then our sole distribution platform was VHS and maybe a little Betamax. Today there are more formats than video stores. The name Unobstructed...

Imagine for a moment that in the 1950s, women started being able to reproduce without men and as a result of some super aggressive natural selection (it's a movie, we'll give the filmmaker a break on the science), women have stopped giving birth to male babies and as a result, in this alternate universe, men are on the brink of extinction.
Mark Sawers' mockumentary No Men Beyond This Point imagines exactly that and focuses on Andrew Myers who, at 37-years old, is the youngest man on earth. The housekeeper for a large family of women, Andrew finds himself at the centre of a growing movement to prevent the extinction of men.

One of the more notable aspects of the Toronto International Film Festival, due to its location, has been its emphasis on Canadian cinema. The festival’s popularity and prominence among film fans around the world has led to Tiff becoming a key platform for Canadian films and Canadian filmmakers to showcase their talents, with the festival’s opening film often coming from a Canadian. The 2015 incarnation is no different in this regard, with Jean-Marc Vallée’s newest feature Demolition set to open the event, and filmmakers like Deepa Mehta, Atom Egoyan, Jon Cassar, and Paul Gross showcasing their newest films at the festival. The Festival organisers, however, have now revealed the other Canadian features that will be playing at the event, across a variety of programs. The list can be seen below.
