When the first trailer for Disney Plus’s new Star Wars series, The Acolyte, dropped this winter, it raked up more views in its first 24 hours than any other Star Wars series to date. However, it also happened to be their most disliked trailer to date on the platform, to the point that many accused online trolls of review-bombing the trailer. Even still, hardcore fans of the franchise seemed to meet the trailer with a bit of a shrug, so Lucasfilm and Disney are celebrating Star Wars Day (May the 4th) with a new, more-action driven trailer which makes it seem almost like a sci-fi version of a classic Kung-Fu film from the seventies.
Indeed, martial arts epics and samurai tales always influenced George Lucas when he crafted the original trilogy, so it makes sense that showrunner Lesyle Headland’s take on the franchise would make these elements more prominent than ever.

Ubisoft's upcoming video game Star Wars Outlaws will send players on a galactic adventure as they attempt to navigate the seedy underbelly of the galaxy far, far away.
While the game features an original story that follows a brand new character, Kay Vess, players will travel to familiar (and new) planets while dealing with legendary criminal organizations such as the Pyke Syndicate, the Hutt Cartel, and the Crimson Dawn. The recent story trailer for Star Wars Outlaws also mentioned a fourth faction, the Ashiga Clan.
The Ashiga Clan is an all-new faction that has been created by Massive Entertainment in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games specifically for Star Wars Outlaws. The trailer didn't elaborate too much on this new syndicate, but GameInformer (via GameFragger) recently visited Massive Entertainment to learn about this new crime syndicate.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Greg Daniels’ long-awaited spinoff series of “The Office” is finally taking shape.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sabrina Impacciatore (known for “The White Lotus”) and Domhnall Gleeson have been cast as the first two actors in the upcoming series.
Daniels, co-creator of the US version of “The Office,” has emphasized that the new series is a spinoff rather than a reboot, although it will share the same universe as the original show.
“I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot,” Daniels explained previously. “Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”

In what will surely come as a huge shock to the general public and cause no small number of monocles to pop out, Amazon MGM Studios has elected to retitle Zoë Kravitz's feature directing debut, which was previously going under the not-at-all provocative moniker "Pussy Island." Kravitz's film will instead be released as "Blink Twice," which for me conjures memories of David Tennant's 10th Doctor desperately warning Carey Mulligan not to blink around the Weeping Angels in the classic modern "Doctor Who" episode "Blink."
That association isn't entirely inappropriate, either. "Blink Twice," like "Blink," is a potpourri of horror, mystery-thriller, and humor with an English actor at its core. In this case, it's Naomi Ackie of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody," and "Master of None" season 3 fame starring as a young woman who accompanies a tech billionaire -- played by Kravitz's current real-life significant other,...

Reps for Universal Television, which is producing the updated take from creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman (Nathan for You), declined to comment as the details surrounding the project remain closely guarded. A platform for the project has not yet been determined as sources say Daniels and the studio want to make sure the take is right before setting it up at a network/streamer. Not everyone anticipated that George Lucas’ space opera, which tells the story of characters’ adventures from ‘A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away’, would even be a hit before it was released in 1977. Significantly, even after more than 40 years, Star Wars would continue to rank among the most celebrated franchises in popular culture.
For a long time, fans have been enthralled by Star Wars movies; nevertheless, not every flick in the franchise has been well-received by critics or has done well at the box office. There have been highs and lows, which is pretty much inevitable, even though the best of the movies are undeniably classics.

Daisy Ridley‘s acting career since “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” has been, let’s say, uneven. Sure, “Sometimes I Think About Dying” is a provocative character study and a solid performance by the actress. But then there’s stuff Doug Liman‘s dismal “Chaos Walking” and “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” two films not exactly tailor-made for Ridley’s talents.

“He’s not alone anymore.” Against seemingly all odds, given its R-rating, adult nature, and disconnection from traditional cinema superheroics, Warner Bros. “Joker” movie earned over $1 billion at the box office in 2019, the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year, even outgrossing “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” worldwide.

Carrie-Anne Moss will make the leap from The Matrix to Star Wars with The Acolyte, the upcoming live-action series set to be released on Disney+ this summer. The actress plays Jedi Master Indara, and as we’ve seen in the trailer, she’s adept at wielding a lightsaber as well as using “Force-fu,” which naturally makes one think of Trinity.
According to The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland, that connection with Trinity is very much intentional as she told Empire that Master Indara was “very much inspired” by Carrie-Anne Moss’ iconic Matrix character. “I personally wanted to see someone who had the highest status you could imagine in a Force-fu fight – somebody that would come in and you immediately would be like, ‘Oh, that’s the most powerful Jedi in the room.’ And that’s Trinity,” Headland explained.

The first trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte dropped earlier this week, and according to Lucasfilm, it actually broke a major record, besting every trailer for The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka, but unfortunately, it also racked up quite a few dislikes on YouTube.
“The trailer for The Acolyte garnered 51.3 million views in its first 24 hours,” reads the Lucasfilm announcement. “This is a new digital-only record for any Lucasfilm Disney+ series, surpassing every trailer for The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka. We’re grateful for your support, and can’t wait for you to experience the series.“
As I write this, The Acolyte trailer has 166k likes on YouTube, but it also has over 365k dislikes. Yikes. A portion of these dislikes could be down to review bombing, but the trailer did receive a rather mixed response upon release.

We’re grateful for your support, and can’t wait for you to experience the series.“

The first official trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte was finally released earlier today, and the reaction seems to be fairly mixed, with some loving it and others saying they won’t be watching. However, series creator Leslye Headland told the official Star Wars website that The Acolyte isn’t what you think it is, teasing plenty of mysteries to come.
“Whatever you think The Acolyte is, it’s not that,” Headland said. “It’s a drop in the bucket, baby. Just hang in there and check it out.” The creator also teased that The Acolyte will include more than a few nods to the Star Wars Extended Universe. “There’s also some EU lore that I decided to put in because I thought it was so cool and no one told me I couldn’t,” she said. “There are a couple of really big EU ideas that are utilized...

It's fun going back to watch Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fi epic "The Empire Strikes Back," knowing what twists would come in subsequent sequels. In "Empire," Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) became angry at Han Solo (Harrison Ford), a man Leia knew was attracted to her. To make Han jealous, Leia brazenly grabs a nearby Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and kisses him full on the mouth. Luke knows that Leia was only playing a game, but was happy to be kissed. Han stormed out of the room, outraged. Luke smiled in smug satisfaction.
In Richard Marquand's 1983 follow-up film "Return of the Jedi," it would be revealed that Luke and Leia were siblings. This was clearly a last-minute plot twist, meant to parallel the "surprise" from "Empire" that the villainous Darth Vader was actually Luke Skywalker's father. The "Jedi" twist wasn't thought out, however, as it retroactively incorporated into "Star Wars" an...

Patty Jenkins is giving a promising update on her long-presumed-dead Star Wars movie Rogue Squadron.
The Wonder Woman director says she’s back in active development on the project and is working on a draft for Lucasfilm.
“When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,'” she told the Talking Pictures Podcast. “So we started a deal for that to happen. So when Wonder Woman 3 went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning. So I now owe a draft of Star Wars. So we will see what happens there. Who knows? They have a hard job in front of them of, ‘What’s the first movie [since the sequel trilogy] they’re going to do?...

Daisy Ridley is set to reprise her role of Rey for a new Star Wars movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and the actress shared a few insights about the project while speaking with Deadline.
While Ridley said that she’s still waiting to read a script, she did say that she knows “bit and bobs,” including that there will be “an introduction of new characters.” When asked if any previous characters would be reprising their roles, such as John Boyega as Finn or Adam Driver as the ghost of Kylo Ren, Ridley said she didn’t know. Another character who fans might expect to see is Luke Skywalker, but Mark Hamill hasn’t heard anything. “Everything is confidential,” Hamill said. “So, If I were involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. And if I were not involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. So, I don’t know.

Well, Han Solo and Princess Leia had a jedi child in Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren, so what about Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker?
The next Star Wars movie from filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, will see the further adventures of Rey post the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, one reported string being that the character starts up a Jedi Academy.
Catching up with Ridley at Deadline’s SXSW studio, the actress tells us, “I would say she probably doesn’t have children seeing she’s a Jedi.” We’ll, ya never know. Star Wars canon does change from time to time.
In regards to what she’s heard on the new film, which won’t come until after 2026’s Jon Favreau directed Mandalorian and Grogu Star Wars movie: “Literally what I know is what was announced last year, I’m waiting to read a script.

Harvey Guillén is “optimistic” we’re headed toward a world with a queer Disney princess. The What We Do in the Shadows and Wish actor said this week he thinks “we are in the life span of that potentially happening.”
“I think they’re making strides in the right direction,” Guillén told ComicBook.com of Disney’s queer representation. “I think it’s hard to rebuild a wheel that’s already been in motion for a while, and it’s hard to think of a new direction, especially in where we’re at with the world, but they’re putting their best foot forward, I think. The Cinema Audio Society Awards gave a boost to the Oscar hopes of “Oppenheimer” on Saturday. The film took top honors at these precursor prizes that honor sound mixing over one of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound — “Maestro”– as well as “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.
Last year all five of the society’s favorites — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — sounded good to the academy’s sound branch. “Top Gun: Maverick” won both awards.
In 2022, four of the five Cas nominees — “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story” — went on to contend at the Oscars.

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars," there is a scene wherein a cadre of Nazi-like bad guys, in the employ of the evil Empire, gather around a boardroom table and mention that the mysterious off-screen Emperor has dissolved the senate and taken absolute control. The military generals are outraged, wondering how the Empire might survive without a bureaucracy in place. In Irvin Kirshner's 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it's established that Darth Vader (David Prowse), a mysterious masked warlock, was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, indicating that the Emperor retains control of the Empire through the sheer force of his villainy.
In "The Empire Strikes Back," the Emperor appeared in holographic form to have a powwow with Darth Vader and plan his next move. In the original cut of the movie, the Emperor was played on screen by actress Marjorie Eaton, outfitted with eerie, alien eyeballs. Eaton was a long-working character performer in Hollywood,...

The modern Star Wars films proved to be incredibly divisive among fans, unlike the original trilogy which is considered some of the best sci-fi epics ever made. The continuation of the Skywalker saga and the direction that they took failed to impress fans. Even with the inclusion of the cast of the original trilogy, the modern trilogy did not resonate with fans as well as the original.
Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker ended the Skywalker Saga on a divisive note
Even though Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was a huge commercial success, fans hated how the film resorted to nostalgia instead of character development. However, one of the interesting arcs was the relationship between Jannah and Lando Calrissian. There’s no denying that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker certainly made some… interesting storytelling choices, especially with its main villain, who somehow returned to strike back at Rey and the Resistance. Not only does the movie reveal that Supreme Leader Snoke was just one of Emperor Palpatine’s clones all along, and that he’s been secretly preparing for the return of the true Empire and the Sith on Exegol, but we also get the biggest twist of all: Rey (Daisy Ridley) is his granddaughter.
The Emperor’s family tree is more complicated than that, though. Technically, Rey’s father, Dathan, is a failed clone of Palpatine rather than a biological child, but that hasn’t stopped fans from asking the big question: did the Emperor, in fact, have sex at some point during the saga? It’s a question that has haunted many, even if the answer...

Do it. Execute order 69. He could stop others from boning, but not himself. Young fool, only now in your end do you understand. Your coming together is your undoing. Insert your own ribald "Emperor Palpatine has sex" pun here.
In J.J. Abrams' maligned 2019 sci-fi adventure "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," it was revealed that the young heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley) was the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), the deceased villain from several previous "Star Wars" movies. At the end of 1983's "Return of the Jedi," Darth Vader (David Prowse) hurled the elderly Emperor from a tall tower, most definitely killing him. Somehow, however, Palpatine returned. Not only did he return, but he was revealed to be the secret mastermind behind all of the galaxy's recent malfeasance. He was kept alive by eerie, Gigerian machines on the distant planet Exegol, secretly growing clones and constructing a powerful fleet of ultra-destructive warships.

Minutes after the first trailer for his superhero pic Deadpool & Wolverine dropped during the Super Bowl, Ryan Reynolds tweeted about popcorn, of all things. “Wait til you see the Deadpool popcorn bucket,” he wrote. An eternal jester, he no doubt was responding to the social media frenzy over a new Dune in-theater sandworm popcorn container that’s being riffed for looking like a sex toy (it even was the subject of a Saturday Night Live skit).
But Reynolds also sees dollar signs for struggling theater owners. With little fanfare, elaborate popcorn containers — known as “vessels” in industry speak — have become a lucrative side business for cinemas, third-party vendors and Hollywood studios, the latter of which receives licensing fees.
Sandworms apparently have an appetite for popcorn, judging by the vessel ($24.99 from AMC) that caused a spicy social media response and is supporting both the current reissue of Dune (2021) and the sequel’s March 1 release.

Anthony Daniels has been stirringly loyal to the "Star Wars" media empire ever since its inception in 1977. Daniels played the prissy, cowardly droid C-3Po, an automaton built to aid in translation and matters of diplomacy. Curiously, he was programmed to flee from danger, and frequently comments on how his carbon-based compatriots are reckless and foolhardy. He may have a point, as C-3Po is dismembered and reassembled several times throughout "Star Wars" history.
Daniels has appeared inside the droid costume, or at least provided the voice for C-3Po in 14 feature films, not all of them "Star Wars" related. He played the part in "The Lego Movie," for instance. He also voice the popular droid in "The Star Wars Holiday Special," appeared on both "The Muppet Show" and "Sesame Street," starred in the animated series "Droids," and acted in over a dozen "Star Wars" and "Lego Star Wars" video games.

You'd have to be the world's biggest grump to grouse over Billy Dee Williams returning to the role of Lando Calrissian for "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" 36 years after the character's last appearance in the series. First off, it's Billy Dee Williams. The man defined 1970s suave as Louis McKay opposite Diana Ross' Billie Holiday in "Lady Sings the Blues," and was denied a bevy of further star turns for infuriatingly obvious corporate/cultural reasons. Williams didn't disappear from the movies, but he should've been topping marquees for at least a couple of decades.
If only J.J. Abrams had given the smoothest rogue in the galaxy something more interesting to do than provide a bit of crucial info, catch us up on his tragic post-original trilogy doings, and help save the day at the end of what is by far the worst entry in the series' nine-film cycle.

Earlier this year, Disney and Lucasfilm made the surprise announcement that their hit "Star Wars" TV series "The Mandalorian" would be making the jump to the big screen with a movie titled "The Mandalorian and Grogu." Slated to begin production this year, the movie will be directed by Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), who will also be producing with Lucasfilm's president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni, who is also an executive producer and writer on "The Mandalorian." And now we have some idea of when the movie will arrive in theaters.
During an earnings call today, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that 2026 would likely see the release of "The Mandalorian and Grogu," kicking off the next generation of "Star Wars" movies. This should come as no surprise since the initial announcement for the film said it would "lead Lucasfilm's ongoing feature-development slate." So exactly when in 2026 can we...

New Yorkers minding their own business when aliens attack from the sky? That sounds like a Cloverfield! Well, the first Cloverfield from 2008, anyway.
The teaser for the film promised hip New York teens filming themselves during an alien invasion. Between the Escape from New York homage and the name “J.J. Abrams” — better known at the time for Alias and Lost instead of Star Trek Into Darkness or Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the Cloverfield trailer created a buzz that concealed the finished product from director Matt Reeves and writer Drew Goddard.
Cloverfield left viewers hungry for a sequel that further developed the world, and Paramount was quick to acquiesce. But instead of giving fans another found footage chronicle of the central monster’s attack on New York, Abrams’s production company Bad Robot retrofitted a project called The Cellar into 10 Cloverfield Lane, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Josh Campbell,...

Times were tough for Chewbacca in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy. First, he watched helplessly as his decades-long pal Han Solo got impaled by a lightsaber, then his longtime friend Luke died after years of exile, and then his other friend Leia died not long after. To make things worse, Chewie was also accidentally blown up in a spaceship in "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker." Well, not really, but it sure looked like it at the time.
The reveal that Chewbacca hadn't died was a happy moment, but it wasn't for long. Our furry friend was subsequently taken prisoner by the villainous First Order and had to contend with Han and Leia's angry, wrathful son, Kylo Ren. Not a ton happens between the two in the finished version of "Rise of Skywalker," but there was a...
