Thirst Street, a sordid trauma study with a twist on fairy tale idealizations, denotes a significant departure from Silver’s unbound form to something more staged and mannered. As the fate of Silver’s characters come to question, and the fabled nature of fate itself does too, we endure a Silver tragedy at its most pre-designed.
From his usual outlines to a 25 page treatment, Thirst Street still maintains some of Silver's unscripted sensibilities. Dialogue was improvised. Shots were intuited on the day, guided by the atmosphere of a setting and the emotional necessities of a scene. Still it maintains a form, with a stylized beginning & end, and a more fluid, naturalistic, midsection.
Nathan details the use of these new formal elements, the ways which they apply thematically to Thirst Street, and their current and hoped for evolutions in his future work.

‘The Leftovers’: An Oral History of the Finale’s Karaoke Scene, from Damon Lindelof & Justin Theroux
“One of the things I’m most proud of is the sequence with Kevin Garvey singing “Homeward Bound.” — Mimi Leder
“The karaoke scene was probably the most deeply uncomfortable scene I had to shoot.” — Justin Theroux
“If you try to explain to someone, ‘Here’s what happened in the finale of “The Leftovers,”‘ you sound insane.” — Damon Lindelof
[Spoilers for “The Leftovers” Season 2 are below.]
The second season of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s magnificent exploration of belief, faith and family included its fair share of bold moments. Its opening sequence tracked a cave woman giving birth in rural Texas. Its first episode barely featured its main stars, shifting instead to a whole new family in a brand new location. And then came “International Assassin,” the season’s eighth episode that tracked Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) into the afterlife; an afterlife set in a hotel where he donned a suit, became an assassin and had to...

Edinburgh: Scottish actor gives talk about 22-year acting career including new role as Jesus in Last Days In The Desert.
Ewan McGregor revealed to an audience at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) on Sunday that he would be willing to reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi to tell the story of Stars Wars between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back should Disney ever wish to do so.
The comments came during an on-stage interview in which the Scottish star looked back over the highlights of his career thus far and chose his words carefully on the subject of the forthcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
The actor seemed not to be the most rabid of fanboys and declared: “I’m not a fanatical person.”
Still, he said he was impressed by the trailer - “It looks like [Jj Abrams] he absolutely nailed it” - except for the lightsaber’s updated design.

Premiering at the Berlin Film Festival in the summer of 1972, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant didn’t open to ecstatic reception. Treated with the sort of contempt that artistic endeavors later recuperated as being ‘ahead of their time’ are often subjected to, conservative audiences dismissed it as bleak and artificial, while queer audiences denounced it as an exploitational freak show. Decades later, time has come for a reexamination of one of Fassbinder’s finest achievements, arriving early on in his titles inspired by the works of Douglas Sirk, for which the title of this most certainly evokes. Shot in ten days, and presumed to have been written by Fassbinder by hand on a flight from Berlin to Los Angeles, it features three of his most beloved actresses, each with whom he shared a different type of relationship. Bitchy, catty, melodramatic and pretentious, it’s...

Casting Freddy Mercury, Mike Figgis's sexy lingerie and Judi Dench's first steps to her next Oscar
The great pretender
News that Sacha Baron Cohen has withdrawn from playing Freddie Mercury in Tom Hooper's proposed biopic of the Queen frontman means that Rhys Thomas's documentary Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender remains the definitive chronicle of the singer. An actor and star of The Fast Show and Star Stories, Thomas was an adviser to the planned movie in its early stages. Does Baron Cohen's departure leave the door open for Thomas to prance in as his idol? "It would be a whole different level of financing with me, but I wouldn't say no," says Thomas, whose doc features a duet between Mercury and Michael Jackson. "They made three tracks together that were never released," he tells me. "Freddie flounced off because Michael kept bringing is pet llama to the recording studio.

With Sacha Baron Cohen having dropped out of his long-standing attachment to the Freddie Mercury biopic, reportedly over creative differences with Mercury's Queen bandmates, the search is on for a replacement.
Johnny Depp has been named as the frontrunner by bookies, but he's just one of several names that are now in the mix, so we've narrowed down our top six choices for the role of Mercury.
Johnny Depp
Despite looking nothing like the Queen frontman, Depp is a hot tip for the role on star power alone. He's got singing experience from Sweeney Todd. He's shared a screen with Keith Richards, so acting alongside someone pretending to be Brian May will be a doddle. He's also got bona fide rock cred having recorded with Oasis, Shane MacGowan and Marilyn Manson.

BBC Two‘s five-part period drama Parade’s End leads the nominees for BAFTA‘s television craft awards with five. The adaptation of Ford Madox Ford’s novels started airing on HBO on February 26, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rebecca Hall, Anne-Marie Duff, Rupert Everett and Miranda Richardson. It took mentions for production design and Tom Stoppard’s writing, among others. Also figuring heavily among the nominees are BBC Two and HBO’s Hitchcock drama The Girl, BBC One and BBC America‘s Ripper Street and BBC Two and BBC America’s cancelled The Hour. Other shows known to U.S. audiences, Doctor Who, Call The Midwife, Downton Abbey, Top Gear and The Thick Of It also scored nods. Olympics programming, inlcuding Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony and Stephen Daldry’s closing ceremony are nommed as is the fictional comedy series about the Games, Twenty Twelve. Awards will be handed out on April 28 in London.
