Exclusive: The in-demand Sydney Sweeney, coming off hit rom-com Anyone But You and horror pic Immaculate, is shifting gears again as she is set to portray trailblazing boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic which could be a knockout for buyers at the Cannes market where Black Bear will be launching.
Under the direction of Oz filmmaker David Michôd, known for visceral movies such as Animal Kingdom and The King, the currently untitled project will chart the true story of Martin’s rise to become America’s most well known female boxer in the 1990s — the “female Rocky” in the words of the film’s producers. A naturally gifted fighter, her life transformed in 1989 when she met her manager, and later husband, Jim Martin. Breaking boundaries, she became the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King, and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Could David Michôd be returning to the fest where he launched Animal Kingdom back in 2010? Now that 2023 has come and gone, it’s entirely possible that the A24 folks were holding out or hoping for a Sundance launch with what could be a favorite for the stoner crowd with comedy Wizards! Based on a story by Joel Edgerton and Michôd, this went into production in August of 2022 in native Queensland, Australia with the likes of Pete Davidson, Franz Rogowski, Naomi Scott, Orlando Bloom and Sean Harris. Michôd gave us The Rover (2014), War Machine (2017) and The King (2019).…...

If you were in Simi Valley, California, this past Monday night and just wanted to knock down some pins at Harley’s Valley Bowl, then you were probably pretty surprised by what you saw when you walked through the bowling alley’s door: Dave Grohl hopping on stage with Taylor Hawkins’ son, Shane Hawkins, to play a set of classic rock covers with the late Hawkins’ former side project Chevy Metal. Check out the setlist and watch videos of the performance below.
That’s right, Grohl joined the band for an upbeat, uplifting performance, which not only included songs from classic artists like Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and more, but also featured additional guest appearances from living rock legends. One of Led Zeppelin’s most famous songs is “Stairway to Heaven,” but Robert Plant admitted he wasn’t sure if people ever understood it. Though the band has faced accusations of plagiarism over the song, they believe it is a quintessential representation of who they were as a group. It’s interesting, then, that Plant isn’t sure if people got the point of the song. Given its popularity and cultural legacy, though, does this matter?

“Stairway to Heaven” was the subject of a copyright infringement case, prompting Plant to defend himself and co-writer Jimmy Page by sharing the story of how they wrote it. Page was playing the opening notes to the song, which inspired Plant to write lyrics.

Led Zeppelin stormed onto the music scene in 1969 and soon became classic rock legends. There are some aesthetically similar bands Zep fans should listen to, but nothing comes close to the real thing. Yet the band wasn’t infallible. It’s one of their finest works, but the 1975 double album Physical Graffiti contains some duds. Let’s look at the four worst songs Led Zeppelin put on Physical Graffiti.
(l-r) John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Bonham (background) of Led Zeppelin | Ian Dickson/Redferns Led Zeppelin did some of their finest work on ‘Physical Graffiti’
Before we cover the worst Physical Graffiti songs, we need to mention that the record has some of Led Zeppelin’s best songs.
Side 2 closer “Kashmir” is the band’s definitive song, according to both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. It might be one of the most diverse Led Zeppelin albums, too.

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.
Robert’s decision to drop out of school, rent sketchy (i.e. illegal) lodgings in a boiler room and take a low-paying assistant job bring him into the path of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a former employee at one of the comic magazines Robert idolizes. And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”
A total of 28 A24 films will arrive on the streamer on Aug. 1, timed to the studio’s tenth anniversary and marking the largest collection of A24 films made available to stream on the platform. Much of the lineup consists of films released prior to 2016, when A24 was still a distribution house and not yet the full-fledged studio it is today.
Some buzzy titles such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Eighth Grade,” “Mid90s” and dozens more are not on this list because of prior deals the studio set up with other streamers. Most A24 films can be found on Apple TV+ and Showtime, who set up deals to serve as the home for a number of their digital releases in 2018 and 2019, respectively. But as those deals near a close,...

HBO Max is already the home of A24 series, including “Euphoria,” but now the streamer is adding several of the distributor’s feature films as well, a rep from Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed to TheWrap on Tuesday.
The list of films that will be added on August 1 includes 2015’s “Room,” which netted Brie Larson a Best Actress Oscar, Alex Garland’s 2014 sci-fi stunner “Ex Machina,” “Amy,” Asif Kapadia’s Oscar-winning documentary about the late Amy Winehouse, and the Tom Hardy film “Locke.”
While not every A24 film will start streaming August 1 — alas no, “Minari,” “The Witch,” or “Hereditary” — here are the 28 titles set to debut on HBO Max.

Peter Sciberras, the Oscar-nominated editor of The Power of the Dog
Final interview of the season! Editing is often called "the invisible art" but it's very visible. The audience just doesn't always know what they're looking at. Editors make a million choices in how we see, absorb, and feel the movies we love. I was thrilled to sit down with the editor Peter Siberras, who is Oscar nominated for his rich work on Jane Campion's Best Picture nominated future classic The Power of the Dog. As we started talking we shared stories about falling in love with editing. Peter fell in love young when a housemate was making a music video and was having trouble finding an editor. "So, I gave it a shot one night at the age of 22," he recalls. "I instantly loved it. The second I did it I stopped thinking about any other career.

This far into his screen career, it shouldn’t be a revelation to anyone that Zac Efron can act. He’s shown canny comic chops in the “Neighbors” films, wounded all-American ennui in “We Are Your Friends” and “At Any Price,” even a credible against-type chill as Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” — none of which has been enough to overtake his bland, floppy-banged, career-minting “High School Musical” persona in the popular imagination.
In “Gold,” an otherwise ordinary survival thriller from actor-director Anthony Hayes, Efron resorts to the same kind of extreme measures that fellow heartthrob Ryan Reynolds took to prove his worth in “Buried”: headlining a one-location genre piece so leanly conceived that it has scarcely anything to showcase but his commitment and grit. As a lone drifter guarding a precious quarry in deadly desert conditions in a faintly futuristic nowhereland, he’s good, as...

Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” opened on March 4, giving people a chance to see the amazing cast he was able to put together to reinvent DC Comics’ Dark Knight in a new and novel, yet still appropriately nocturnal way. The crazy thing about this cast, though, is that not a single one of the main actors has ever been nominated for an Academy Award, although their work in “The Batman” is certainly going to bring them more attention over the next several months.
Beginning with the new Batman/Bruce Wayne, Robert Pattinson has come a long way since his role as Edward Cullen in the “Twilight Saga,” which amassed $3.3 billion worldwide over the course of five movies. Pattinson starred in that franchise with Kristen Stewart, who finally received her very first Oscar nomination last month for “Spencer,” but Pattinson has also been doing his fair share of prestige films since leaving “Twilight.

Before The Batman, Robert Pattinson was sparkly vampire Edward Cullen. And before that he was Hufflepuff’s star seeker Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter. But in between his heartthrob era and none-more-moody Batman times, Pattinson did some really interesting stuff.

If you've kept up with Robert Pattinson's career post-"Twilight," then you know he's mostly stayed away from acting in any movie that could be even remotely considered "mainstream." Be it David Michôd's "The Rover," David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars," the Safdie Brothers' "Good Time," Claire Denis' "High Life," or Robert Eggers' "The Lighthouse," R-Patz has preferred to keep it weird, in terms of both the films he makes and his performances therein.
After many years of avoiding big-budget movies entirely, Pattinson signed on for Christopher Nolan's "Tenet." It was a natural step for him to take in his career, too. Nolan's $200 million sci-fi action...

There’s always a little more gray area in the Best Film Editing Oscar category about which movies deserve to be highlighted since it’s such an invisible art form where what’s in the movie and not in the movie are both important. But it’s a particularly relevant category, because only one movie in the past 40 years has won Best Picture without being nominated in this category (“Birdman”), which is a testament to how important good editing is to the success of a film.

"Out here, things start to get real strange..." Screen Media Films has revealed the official US trailer for the film Gold, which is arriving in theaeters in the US starting this March. When two drifters traveling through the desert stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found, the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment. The other remains and must endure harsh desert elements, ravenous wild dogs, and mysterious intruders, whilst battling the sinking suspicion that he has been abandoned to his own fate. Zac Efron co-stars with Anthony Hayes, who also directs the film. Not to be confused with the other Gold film starring McConaughey. We featured the first trailer a few months ago. This still reminds me of David Michôd's film The Rover with its gritty post-apocalyptic style.

"You've gotta watch your water, stay out of the town. Ain't no joke out here." Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for the film Gold, not to be confused with the other Gold film with Matthew McConaughey. This one is a thriller about two drifters traveling across a deserted wasteland who stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found. It was filmed in Australia last year, and opens down there first starting in January. No US release is set yet. Zac Efron co-stars with Anthony Hayes, who also directs the film. The cast also features Susie Porter. Set in an unforgiving landscape, Gold is a film about what motivates greed and the lengths people will go to in order to secure themselves. At first glance, this seems like a spiritual sequel to David Michôd's underseen & underrated The Rover, also shot in Australia. Looks like another chance...

Tom Holland seems like a really lovely chap. Outside playing Spider-Man in the MCU, the 24-year-old Brit is possibly best known for being unable to stop himself from leaking spoilers and his genuinely amazing performance of Rihanna’s ”Umbrella” during a lip sync battle.
From his breakout turn in The Impossible to his watery adventure with Chris Hemsworth in In The Heart of the Sea, Holland proved himself versatile and talented even before he put on the Spidey suit. Lately though Holland seems to be exploring his dark side and it fits him well.
Reuniting with his Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, Holland stars in Cherry, which is streaming now on Apple TV+. In it he plays our unnamed narrator (listed as Cherry in the credits), a hard up but essentially decent young man who becomes a drug addict and a...

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Mortal Kombat franchise is coming to the big screen with a new film adaptation of the video game series that kicked off in 1992. Produced by James Wan and directed by Simon McQuoid, the official trailer for the new Mortal Kombat has been unleashed ahead of its April 16th release in theaters and on HBO Max via Warner Bros. Helen Garner.
Aurora Films’ Ákos Armont and Antony Waddington plan to turn Helen Garner’s novel The Spare Room, a drama about a woman who cares for her cancer-stricken friend, into a feature film.
Eamon Flack, the artistic director of Sydney’s Belvoir, will make his screen directing debut on the project.
Published in 2008, the novel follows the relationship between two women, Nicola, who has advanced bowel cancer, and her friend Helen.
When Sydney-based Nicola goes to Melbourne for the treatment she hopes will cure her, Helen becomes her nurse, protector, guardian angel and judge.
Garner’s literary agent sent the tome to Waddington in 2009 when he was raising the finance for Fred Schepisi’s The Eye of the Storm and he has wanted to turn it into a film ever since.
Last year the producers met the author and optioned the screen rights. “We are both enormously encouraged that...

Earlier this month, Shannon Mingal, a digital marketer at Epic Records, received an unexpected text: A glossary of 40 to 50 phrases supposedly used by Gen Z, the sub-25, tech-savvy demographic whose preferences currently dictate the streaming charts, an all-important barometer of success in the music industry. The collection ranged from relatively grasp-able (“legend,” an expression of enthusiasm that has become one of Mingal’s favorites) to wordy (“I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it,” another endorsement) to nearly indecipherable (“chair but make it electric,” a derisive...

Spider-Man, Pennywise, Edward Cullen, The Winter Soldier, and Dudley Dursely are part of the unholy ensemble assembled in The Devil All the Time: a black-as-sin slice of Southern Gothic based on the novel by Donald Ray Pollock. Set between the end of World War II and the Vietnam War, the film presents a sprawling tale of violence and misery passed down through generations. At the center is Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) an essentially decent young man whose father (Bill Skarsgård) had returned from the war traumatized into a religious fervor that leads him to prostrate himself in front of a home-made woodland crucifix every night, fighting, as Arvin says, “The devil all the time.”

If you’re a regular reader of The Playlist, then the odds are that you’re well aware of Robert Pattinson’s post-‘Twlight’ work. After he stopped playing a sparkly vampire, Pattinson went on to star in films such as “The Rover,” “Maps to the Stars,” “The Lost City of Z,” “Good Time,” and, most recently, “High Life.” These are films that “cinephiles” will seek out, but apparently, no one else cares about.

Spike Jonze has joined forces with Free The Work to create a video playlist listing the women cinematographers he wants to work with in the future. Jonze has worked with several female DPs in the past, including Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Zoë White, Mego Lin, and Ellen Kuras. While all four of the director’s feature films have been shot by men (Lance Acord handled Jonze’s first three features and Hoyte van Hoytema stepped in for “Her”), Jonze has collaborated with White, Lin, and Kuras on various advertisements. Kuras worked with Jonze on his famous 2006 Adidas commercial.
As for the women cinematographers Jonze is eyeing for the future, the director’s wish list includes Natasha Braier, Daisy Zhou (check out her Nike Vogue commercial), Rina Yang (the cinematographer behind Sephora’s “We Belong to Something Beautiful” advertisement), Maryse Alberti, and Polly Morgan.

Claire Denis and Robert Pattinson openly talked about wanting to work together again while promoting their first collaboration, the space drama “High Life,” and now they’re going to get the chance with the French director’s next feature film, “The Stars at Noon.” Deadline reports that A24 has picked up North American distribution rights to “The Stars at Noon” ahead of the European Film Market kicking off this week. The project pairs Pattinson with “Fosse/Verdon” Emmy nominee and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” favorite Margaret Qualley. “The Stars at Noon” script is being adapted from Denis Johnson’s 1986 novel by co-writers Denis, Lea Mysius, and Andrew Litvack.

“The King” is a film full of surprises: It’s a saga that strays both from history and from Shakespeare in its tale of power and betrayal; it brilliantly casts Timothée Chalamet against type to portray a young man who has weighty responsibilities suddenly thrust upon him; and it’s a smart and taut bit of storytelling from David Michôd, whose previous feature “War Machine” was neither of those things.
How well this moody (and moodily-lit) story will translate to Netflix is anyone’s guess — watch it in a dark room for full effect — but on any-sized screen, it’s a historical piece that defies expectation and offers both the thrills of battle and a thoughtful critique of war and imperialism.
Structurally, this is a story you know from “Henry IV, Part 2” and “Henry V” (or “Chimes at Midnight” or “My Own Private Idaho”). Prince Hal (Chalamet) lives a life of hedonism,...

Netflix has released a thrilling and intense new trailer for the upcoming film project The King, which is inspired by elements of Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Henry V. The story follows "a young, disgraced prince named Hal, who inherits the crown and must learn what it means to be a king, guided by his one true friend, Falstaff.”
Timothée Chalamet stars in the film as Hal, who is crowned King Henry V after his tyrannical father dies. He finds himself facing off with France, who is ruled by The Duaphin, played by Robert Pattinson. The movie also stars Ben Mendelsohn as King Henry IV, Sean Harris as William, Lily-Rose Depp in the role of Princess Catherine, Tom Glynn-Carney as Hotspur, and Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie as Philippa. Joel Edgerton is also in the film, and he co-wrote it as well.

"Are you ready for what awaits us?" Netflix has launched the full-length official trailer for The King, the latest movie from Australian director David Michod, following the teaser debut a few months ago. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year out-of-competition, stopping by the London and Busan Film Festivals as well. Hal, wayward prince and heir to the English throne, is crowned King Henry V after his tyrannical father dies. Now the young king must navigate palace politics, the war his father left behind, and the emotional strings of his past life. The fierce Timothée Chalamet stars as King Henry V of England; this also features Robert Pattinson, Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Dean-Charles Chapman, Lily-Rose Depp, Sean Harris, Thomasin McKenzie, Andrew Havill, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Steven Elder. The sound of Shakespeare turning in his grave shouldn’t deter you from taking a chance on The King, starring Timothée Chalamet as Prince Hal, the lad dragged reluctantly into playing his own game of thrones. An amalgam of the Bard’s history plays — Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V — reduced to two hours, this mix-and-match melodrama is set in the 15th century but means to speak with the idiomatic, this-just-in urgency of right now. Translation: There’s barely a nod to the poet’s iambic pentameter. Though previous...

A newly groomed Timothée Chalamet stars as Henry V in David Michôd’s latest film The King, a post-modern, mud-and-guts reworking of William Shakespeare’s trilogy of plays on the reluctant ruler. As indebted to the mood and visual language of Game of Thrones as it is to the Bard’s texts, Michôd provides finely worked entertainment with a compelling and significant central performance from Chalamet–who frankly hasn’t had to carry a film in quite this way before.
The director adapted the script with the help of his fellow countryman and frequent collaborator Joel Edgerton. The Australian actor also costars here as the boozy, gregarious Falstaff in a performance that echoes Orson Welles’ take on the same character in Chimes at Midnight but later shifts away from the source material and into something...
