Exclusive: The creator of Canadian smash Letterkenny has struck a multi-year content deal with streamer Crave and New Metric Media that Crave’s programing boss says is a first of its kind.
With Letterkenny’s 12th and final season dropping on Boxing Day, Jared Keeso will subsequently make 49 episodes of Letterkenny spin-offs including Shoresy and other potential shows across several years.
Unveiling the news to Deadline, Crave VP Content Development & Programming Justin Stockman said “this is probably the only deal that has ever been done like this in Canada.” The deal does not prevent Keeso from making shows for other platforms, eschewing the golden handcuffs approach taken by some of the major Hollywood players.
“There is not a lot of pre-committing in Canadian content so this is pretty unique but shows our belief in Jared and the show, and in other shows that don’t exist yet,” added Stockman. “This...

While Hollywood writers are back at work, media companies have suspended negotiations with striking actors over a new contract. Even if talks resume and a settlement were to happen soon, however, it would likely be early 2024 before the two dozen or so dramas and comedies that normally premiere in the fall make it back onto screens.
As luck would have it, though, the era of peak streaming provides a nearly limitless array of series to watch. Below are a handful of new or recent lesser-known shows, many of them from outside the United States, on smaller streaming platforms (and one over-the-air network) that can help viewers fill in gaps in their viewing schedules while waiting for homegrown favorites to return. One bonus: None of the shows below are produced by companies against whom Hollywood’s unions are or were striking this year. Unless noted, all the streamers below offer seven-day...

“The Good Doctor” actress Lisa Edelstein told TheWrap that until she signed on to play a Holocaust survivor who adopts a native Canadian girl in the PBS drama “Little Bird,” she had “no idea” about the government program called “the Sixties Scoop.”
“It was a really horrible system. Everybody knew about it [at the time]. It was just considered the normal thing to do and it’s horrific,” she says of the thousands of indigenous children who were taken from their families in the 1960s.
Edelstein was able to talk about the six-part Canadian series, which premiered on Oct. 12, because PBS productions are considered “non-struck” work during the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Without directly addressing the harrowing Hamas attacks on Israel this week, she added, “Even in this horrific time period that we’re in right now, there’s something about storytelling and understanding each other’s trauma and trying to be human beings. This is very profound right now.

Public television has held separate collective bargaining agreements with the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA for years. So, while studios and networks this fall faced the ramifications of dual Hollywood strikes, it’s been mostly business as usual at PBS.
Perhaps lost in the conversation about this most unusual fall — in which the broadcast networks tweaked and re-tweaked their schedules in light of the lengthy production stoppage — has been PBS’ ability to keep the majority of its schedule intact.
In fact, according to Sylvia Bugg, PBS’ chief programming executive and Gm of general audience programming, just one program on its fall lineup was impacted by the strikes: John Leguizamo’s “American História: The Untold History of Latinos,” which had been scheduled to premiere last month. In solidarity with the strikes, Leguizamo opted to delay the project until 2024. PBS replaced it with another docuseries, “Becoming Frida Kahlo.”

The Jonas Brothers are “suckers” for an emotional tour moment.
On Friday, the trio took the stage at Wrigley Field in Chicago as part of The Tour. At one point of the show, Joe Jonas was moved to tears during their performance of “Little Bird,” after a fan asked them to perform it in honour of her father who died.

However, he doesn’t mind having one of his most notable public mess-ups as a point of public conversation.

S.O.S., the Jonas Brothers‘ latest tour moment is sure to bring the waterworks.
On Saturday, Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas continued The Tour with a stop in Toronto, Canada. During the show, Joe noticed a fan in the audience holding a sign that read, “Dedicate Little Bird to My Angel in Heaven.”
Joe paused the show for a moment, to speak to the fan from Mexico City, and ask her to reveal her “Little Bird’s name.
“Valentina,” she said. Making Kevin — who has a 6-year-old daughter named Valentina — place his hand on his chest.

Nick Jonas handled an on-stage mishap like a total pro. The 30-year-old musician became so engrossed in his performance on Tuesday night, he made a misstep and fell right into a hole.
The Jonas Brothers hit the stage at Td Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday for the first of two performances at the venue amid their world tour titled simply, The Tour. While singing “Sail Away,” off 2023’s The Album, Nick began walking backwards away from the edge of the stage and stepped into a hole. He dropped down to about waist level before popping back up and returning to center stage, joining brothers Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas to finish the song.
Kevin and Joe both appeared to see the moment in real time and, without missing a beat, eyed Nick with smirking faces while continuing the performance. See it happen in the videos below.

The Jonas Brothers are back on tour, and they're keeping things spicy with a few surprise guests. The brothers kicked off their 2023 tour, aptly titled The Tour, with a sold-out performance at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 12, and the three-hour, 60-plus-song show was a mix of nostalgic favorites and new songs from their album "The Album," which was released in May.
"The Album" is the brothers' first album since 2019's "Happiness Begins," which they also supported with a major tour. Since then, some of the brothers' lives have changed a lot - Joe welcomed two children with wife Sophie Turner in 2020 and 2022, and Nick welcomed his first child with wife Priyanka Chopra in 2022. Meanwhile, Kevin shares two daughters with wife Danielle Jonas - and the brothers all paid tribute to their children with the track "Little Bird" from "The Album."

The Jonas Brothers played their first of two shows at Yankee Stadium in New York on Saturday to kick off “The Tour,” their 90-plus date international live trek.
Similar to their early 2023 Broadway residency, the Yankee Stadium show consisted of a career-spanning, 60-song set that featured separate acts dedicated to each of the trio’s five albums: 2007’s self-titled Hollywood Records debut, 2008’s A Little Bit Longer, 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times, 2019’s Happiness Begins, and portions of their latest effort, May’s The Album, performed in spurts throughout. A mini-set of songs from their solo projects was also included, treating fans to full-band renditions of Nick Jonas’s 2014 hit “Jealous” and 2015’s “Cake by the Ocean” by Joe Jonas’s band Dnce.
To mark the ceremonious opening night, the concert boasted special guests Kirk Franklin, producer Jon Bellion, and a gospel choir for a run-through of The Album single “Walls.

David Lee Roth has posted another interpretive dance video, and it’s as strange as ever.
This time, Dlr is donning samurai garb — sword and all — though it’s the song choice that delivers the punchline: Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”
The 30-second clip entitled “Inazuma..” is shot like a black-and-white silent movie and even looks to be sped up, like an old-time film reel. Dlr swings his samurai sword and strikes various poses, as if he’s preparing to duel some invisible foe.
All the while, Brian May’s guitar riffs from “We Will Rock You” obtusely soundtrack the charade. Truly bizarre, but once again, we can’t help but crack a smile at Diamond Dave being Diamond Dave. He would appear to be making the most out of his ostensible retirement.
Previously we reported on Dlr dancing and waving color-guard flags to Annie Lennox’s “Little Bird.

In societies around the world, the welfare and protection of children is considered paramount. However, there exists a deeply concerning issue that continues to plague indigenous communities: From the Americas to Australia, indigenous children have experienced a long history of dispossession, forced assimilation, and loss of their cultural roots. This distressing practice, often driven by historical injustices and prevailing systemic biases, has far-reaching consequences on the lives and identities of these young individuals. The series Little Bird delves into the life of Bezhig, who endures the heart-wrenching fate of being forcibly taken away from her family. Set against the backdrop of Montreal and Saskatchewan, the narrative explores the impact of this traumatic separation on Bezhig’s life and her determination to reclaim her familial bonds.

Why Does Bezhig Feel The Need To Find Her Family?

Whenever I feel that humanity can’t get any worse after watching a show depicting a traumatic phase in human history, I’m provided with a harsher reality check in the form of another show. “Sixties Scoop” is how the snatching of indigenous kids from their parents between the 1960s and 1980s in Canada as a part of government policy is addressed. “Scoop” as we generally refer to a spoon full of ice cream. It is surreal how we can associate the most trivial words with something too horrifying to even imagine. What’s surprising is that the word “scoop,” though insensitive, also points at the horrendously ludicrous system that functioned at the time, which the show deals with. We cannot help but mock ourselves for what we are, but we won’t hide the fact that deep within, we are all monsters. This is Little Bird.

The Jonas Brothers's new record, "The Album," is full of love songs - but one song in particular has an extra sweet backstory. The song "Little Bird," which is the 11th track, is an adorable tribute to the brothers' kids.

How serious are Joe, Kevin, and Nick Jonas about stoking a carefree vibe on their sixth full-length? Not only did they give it the hair-tossing title The Album, they’ve stock it with songs that have titles like “Vacation Eyes,” “Summer in the Hamptons,” and “Vacation Baby.” The result is a sparkling pop party full of romance and hooks, with the three brothers—along with pop maximalist Jon Bellion and other top-tier producers—flexing their songwriting and harmonic chops.

The Jonas Brothers’s The Album takes a chaotic road trip through funk-infused popscapes, blue-eyed soul, Americana, and terpene-flavored West Coast rock. Unfortunately, it moves with the grace of a sputtering hatchback. While the album’s sheer eclecticism is admirable in theory, each foray stops short of reaching its full potential, leaving listeners stranded in a musical no man’s land of half-baked ideas and missed opportunities.
The Album’s second single, “Waffle House,” was an unfortunate foreshadowing of what would come. The song, which is coated with a glistening pop veneer, speaks of “deep conversations at the waffle house.” It is a misguided attempt to tap into an idealized vision of modern Americana, peppered with manufactured positivity ready-made for Instagram hashtags.

Speaking with Bustle, the Jonas Brothers address writing songs together as brothers, even when they deal with very personal, intimate issues, including sex.

For example, in their song, “Summer In the Hamptons”, from their upcoming The Album, the brothers sing on the chorus, “Sex with you is like…” with the refrain, “champagne ocean, sky wide open, raw emotion.”
Kevin explained, “It’s just natural to speak about your life and where you’re at. Like, that’s my wife and partner in crime of 13 years, you know?”
But Nick jumped in to point out that being so candid in their music is not always so simple.

“Blue Jean” director Georgia Oakley has signed with CAA.
The up-and-coming British filmmaker made her debut feature with the Venice-premiering “Blue Jean,” which bowed to wide acclaim on the Lido in September. Set in northeast England in the 1980s, the pic is centred on a closeted gym teacher (played by Rosy McEwen) who is forced to confront her sexuality after taking a gay student under her wing.
The film tackles the Margaret Thatcher era’s controversial Section 28 law, which prohibited British schools and councils from “promoting the teaching of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.” The law was passed in 1988 and stayed in place until 2003.
“Blue Jean” went on to win the Venice Film Festival’s Giornate degli Autori People’s Choice Award. The movie was later acquired by Magnolia Pictures for a North American release, which will take place June 9.

With Series Mania 2023 coming to a close, the event’s founder and general director Laurence Herszberg announced the winners of the Series Mania Festival today.
”We would first like to thank the public and the professionals who attended this edition, which brought together more than 85,000 participants for the Festival and 3,800 participants from 64 countries for the Forum. We are delighted to announce our prize list and figures that have far exceeded our expectations,” said Herszberg.
With the rise of streaming across the world, Series Mania has become one of the most attractive events in the global TV calendar. It’s largely looked at as a place where writers, distributors and producers can liase with each other in a less formal setting than compared to a TV sales market. It includes not just the festival, the Forum, key conferences, keynotes, and pitching sessions.
This year the festival screened 54 unreleased series, with 32 world premieres and 10 international premieres.

Lille, France — Headed by a commanding performance from Navid Mohammadzadeh, superbly shot and packing arguably the best opening scene of any series in Series Mania main competition, Navid Javidi’s “The Actor” won the Grand Prize at Series Mania on Friday night.
The top Series Mania award for the “The Actor” also proves vindication for the Festival which this year has broadened its geographical reach in an effort to discover new narrative modes and styles. Consistently subordinating narrative to mood, “The Actor” certainly wins on that score.
Main scribe John Kåre Raake (“The Quake”) and co-scribe Linn-Jeanethe Kyed (“Bø”) scooped best writing for “The Fortress,” a banner upcoming Viaplay title produced by Norway’s Maipo Film and sold by TrustNordisk, which delivers a telling political cautionary tale for our times, a chic isolationist parable thriller set in an alternative Norway which has built a wall to keep foreigners out. When a virus strikes,...

Series Mania has always been about discovery: Of drama series as an art form, in its early days from launch in 2009; then of key players on a burgeoning international premium TV scene.
Series Mania’s International Panorama now catches a new wave of creatives transitioning from film to scripted TV – Israel’s Yaron Shani with “Innermost,” Spain’s Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campo with episodes of “Apagón”; and highlights notable emerging auteurs: Denmark’s Kasper Møller Rask, Canada’s Alexis Durand-Brault, Spain’s Fran Araujo, Pakistan’s Assim Abassi and Germany’s Jakob and Jonas Weydemann.
But for having already bowed at national festivals, some of the 12 titles below could well have been in the running for a Competition berth.
Below, the Series Mania’s rich 2023 International Panorama:
“Apagón,” (“Offworld,” Spain)

With an International Panorama spangled by gems – think Spain’s “Apagón,” Sweden’s “Blackwater,” and Canada’s “Disobey” and “Little Bird” – Series Mania also weighs in this year with one, if not the, strongest and most mouthwatering of international competitions in its history.
Including the opening and closing series, Amazon’s “Greek Salad” and Netflix’s “Transatlantic,” nearly all the global streamers have titles in the lineup, from Apple TV+’s “Drops of God” and Paramount+’s “Fleeting Lies.” The lineup also features some A-List international writing talents, such as the U.K.’s Jack Thorne and Israel’s Ron Leshem and Amit Cohen, whose “The Virtues” and “No Man’s Land” rank among the most memorable of recent Series Mania competition titles, and closing the festival, out of competition, “Unorthodox’s” Anna Wenger.”Fleeting Lies” also represents one of the first series from Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo label in Madrid,...
