Swooping Destruction
This game is an honorable mention in favorite shoot em ups of all time. I really like this game because it's something different that you really don't see much in the genre or even at all. It also in a way sort of predates the "Strike" trilogy for the "Genesis". This game you can say is almost a mix of "Time Pilot" and "Assault" sort of.
The graphical presentation is very good, really like the detail of the land when you zoom in and out, really gives you the feeling that your up in the air and surveying the land when descending. Along with the explosions and the sound of them that are just music to my ears.
The detail in the enemy vehicles are good but I really like the design of the chopper you pilot, which looks like it could be one of the vehicles for the "G. I. Joe" toy line. I even like the music of the game which are solid tracks, almost sound like they could've been from the TV show "Airwolf", one of them has some similar lyrics to the theme song.
But what makes the game stand out is of course the action and the gameplay. Difficulty in the game is at a medium level, like in most arcade games starts out easy but then things start to get a little harder as you ascend further in the game. I like that the game has a map with multiple paths which gives the game some replicability, so you can beat this game in which ever way you choose.
Really like the controls in the game from the cabinet where you have a pilot joystick and a throttle which is cool as it really gives you the feel of riding and being a helicopter pilot.
I really like how the game utilizes the zoom in and out function which was something revolutionary at the time. This of course was used in the video game "Assault" (story for another time) but also was years before the SNES used this in many of its games. In this game the throttle control gives you this function of ascend and descend, as far away as you want or get as close as you want. There is also that land bombing function where to take out the ground targets you must discharge missiles.
However, this function doesn't make you invincible, you must constantly be on the move and not stay in one area or position to long as enemy planes will swoop in on your location as well as the resistance on ground level so be careful.
Like in the game "Time Pilot" it's a bit of a survival game because to pass the level you must meet a quota by destroying enough targets in the area; once you do that you can move on. Of course, you won't be lost as there are guide arrows that show you that point you to any other targets that need destruction in the area. Not just do you have to watch yourself not to get hit but also you have to watch the clock as it is constantly ticking away, once it reaches zero than the mission is over; if you haven't met the quota by then than your game is over. So, take your time, but make sure not to take too much time and always work fast.
