The superhero genre has traditionally been family-oriented. Often light-hearted and ending with a moral message, PG-13 is what most of these films aim for. However, every now and then there comes an R-rated superhero flick that completely blows off adult minds, forcing them to be hyped like kids again. And the Deadpool series did just that.
A still from Logan
However, Deadpool wasn’t the first R-rated superhero movie, and it certainly won’t be the last. Most of the time, R-rated movies earn much less than their PG counterparts, and just like Deadpool, that rule is occasionally broken. As in the case of Logan, which successfully clawed through its family-friendly genre to present a bloody masterpiece.

Exclusive: BBC News’ search for its first royal editor has been blown wide open after the British broadcaster passed over two leading internal candidates.
The BBC has advertised the royal editor post externally for the first time, just days after it was expected to be offered to either Mark Easton, BBC News’ home editor, or royal correspondent Daniela Relph.
The prestige on-air role is likely to attract interest from high-profile external candidates, with BBC sources already speculating that Roya Nikkhah, The Sunday Times royal editor and CBS News contributor, would be the candidate to beat, should she wish to apply.
There is anger, however, that Easton and Relph have been overlooked. “The whole thing stinks,” said an insider familiar with the process. A second person added: “Daniela and Mark are very very unhappy.”
Several sources said Easton, a vastly experienced BBC journalist, was asked to complete a written test as part of his application process,...

There was plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Latin Grammys this year. For the first time, the award show was planned in Sevilla, Spain, a cross-continental move that sparked plenty of debate.
The European country has had a complicated place with the awards show, and prior to the ceremony, fans pointed out it’s not part of Latin America — though the Latin Grammys have always considered all music, as long as it’s 51 percent in Spanish. Beginning her journey with Pixar eight years ago, as a storyboard artist on The Good Dinosaur, Rosana Sullivan made her directorial debut this year with Kitbull, which on Monday made the Academy’s shortlist for Best Animated Short Film.
Examining a fiercely independent stray kitten and a pit bull, and the unlikely friendship that emerges between them, Kitbull emerged from Sullivan’s desire to capture animals in animation, the way that they actually are. “I love cat videos, as we all do, and I just wanted to draw a kitten being a kitten, because I never saw that done in animation, at least not often. Usually, they’re anthropomorphized, and I just wanted to capture the spirit of a real kitten,” the director tells Deadline. “It then evolved into something about connection and friendship between two outcast characters, because that was something that I had struggled with as a kid.

[This post contains details from The Biggest Loser episode that aired Sept. 11]
After Rachel Frederickson’s controversial victory last season, the producers are giving themselves a second chance with The Biggest Loser: Glory Days. All 20 contestants this year are former athletes, which theoretically should mean their minds and bodies are better suited for the intense regime expected of this competition. These former champions already know what it takes to be a winner but also understand the concept of limits and discipline, something Frederickson was criticized for lacking. Though it gets a little annoying how many times the trainers say it, this does have the potential to be the best season yet.

All clear? Then, let’s get wading.
Everyone knows that critics are a wretched, bitter cross-section of human sewage, right? In case you’d forgotten, the first few films we encounter provide evidence of these dregs of society finally getting their just desserts.
Vincent Price might be the perfect critic-slayer. Surely there can be no finer way to go than accompanied by a Shakespearian quote in the high-camp dulcet tones of a horror legend. Theatre Of Blood,...

(Cbr) Actors Ashley Bell and Clint Howard stopped by the Cbr Speakeasy in Los Angeles to discuss noir superhero film "Sparks," directed by Christopher Folino and based on the graphic novel of the same name. It's very possible fans will know Bell and Howard from their work in other films and television shows -- Bell plays Nell Sweetzer in "The Last Exorcism" series and portrayed Karina in webisodes for "The Walking Dead," while Howard's lengthy career in film and television includes credits in everything from "Apollo 13" and "Frost/Nixon" to "Star Trek" and Disney's "The Jungle Book." In "Sparks," Bell took on the role of Lady Heavenly, the vigilante romantic interest of Sparks, while Howard plays Gordon Eldridge, the head of the newspaper. During their interview with Cbr Executive Producer Jonah Weiland, Bell and Howard discussed the draw of "Sparks" and the challenge of bringing superheroes to life on a budget.

"1948 - I remember that year well... It was the year I met her... And it was the year a serial killer came to my town." Today's indie trailer is for a dark superhero or super powers action-thriller titled Sparks, from co-directors Todd Burrows & Christopher Folino. Up-and-coming actor Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End and "Video Game High School") plays Ian Sparks, a masked vigilante who "discovers the dark side to heroism." IMDb's synopsis leaves out the super-powered group Rochester 13, but they're in this trailer. The cast includes Ashley Bell, Clancy Brown, Jake Busey, William Katt, Marina Squerciati. I'm curious about it. Watch the official trailer for Todd Burrows & Christopher Folino's Sparks, in high def from Apple: "Supers like me had kept this town safe..." Science Fiction has always played a pivotal role in cinema. It is a means by which we can look into the future and speculate as to what “could be”. Our only limit is our imaginations, and our imaginations provide an infinite number of possibilities. With that being said there have been some incredible films that allow us to look forward and wonder, “what if?”. Whether it is the existence of extra terrestrials or humankind’s self destructive nature – these possibilities are fascinating.
While it is easy to point to the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises because they are so iconic, we decided that would be too easy. Below are our favorite Science Fiction films that do not begin with the word “Star”. Did we miss something? Share your favorite with us on Facebook, Twitter, or in the comments below!

“Stories We Tell”
Sarah Polley has transitioned from actress to director with remarkable ease, delivering the critically acclaimed “Away From Her” and “Take This Waltz.” Her latest film happens to be about her own drama as the documentary “Stories We Tell” attempts to answer questions about her mother’s past and becomes something of a commentary on how and why we tell these stories in the first place.

Actor William Katt first gained notoriety by playing Carrie White’s prom date in director Brian De Palma’s masterpiece of terror, Carrie in 1976. Since then, he’s gone one to play a multitude of roles in film, television and stage. He is probably best known to horror and science fiction fans for his roles in films such as Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend (1985), House (1986). It is his role as the mild-mannered high school teacher Ralph Hinkley in the cult classic television series The Greatest American Hero (1981-86) that he will probably forever be known for the most.
A theater veteran and musician are also roles near and dear to Katt’s heart. He continues to appear in television and film roles and has numerous projects coming out in 2013. I was able to catch up with Mr. Katt at the Days of...

Sparks are reportedly flying between Harry Styles and Taylor Swift, but Demi Lovato is hoping they fizzle out Asap! When reports surfaced that Harry Styles and Taylor Swift were flirting backstage during rehearsals for The X Factor, Twitter exploded with messages of support for the two young musicians. But it seems not everyone is on board with Harry and Taylor's alleged love connection. Demi Lovato is not rooting for a romance to develop between the two megastars, according to Hollyscoop. "I don’t really know about that and I don’t care," she said while looking noticeably upset. Luckily, the other judges don't share Demi's viewpoint. Though Simon Cowell missed out on Harry and Taylor's flirtatious behavior because he wasn't at rehearsal and "only heard about it when [he] came down," he thinks the two would make a great couple. "I think they’re good together! Yeah!" Host Mario Lopez also agrees.

Basically, I told him the milestone outing — which will likely air around midseason — should climax with Brennan proposing to Booth. Harvey Keitel and Matthew Guinness in The Duellists
Photo: Paramount Pictures With all the excitement surrounding Ridley Scott's upcoming film Prometheus marking the director's much anticipated return to the world of Alien, which he brought to life back in 1979, I've heard many people reference Scott's 1977 directorial debut, The Duellists. Strangely I've heard it mentioned not only because Scott has a new film coming out, but I've read it mentioned in articles discussing its accomplished cinematic swordplay. My interest was piqued and I took to Netflix. Based on Joseph Conrad's 1908 short story "The Duel" (download it for free here), which itself is based on a true story, The Duelists centers on Armand d'Hubert (Keith Carradine) and Gabriel Feraud (Harvey Keitel), a pair of officers in Napoleon's army. The film begins with Feraud in a duel with a man we'll later learn is the nephew of the Mayor of Strasbourg.

It should come as no surprise by now. Private Practice has brought its A-game all season long, and Shonda and company delivered once again tonight with another strong installment, "Andromeda."
Sam continued to try caring for his sister, but her mental condition was making it quite a struggle. I’ll admit that I haven’t been entirely invested in this storyline simply because there has been far too much already going on in the past few episodes. However, this all changed when things got intense and Corrine struck Sam in the head with a candlestick holder and then fell through the window.
To say the least, I definitely didn’t see that coming. Another surprise was Amelia’s pregnancy. She’s been to Hell and back, and I expected that she would take a backseat after all that’s happened. Then again, I assume this would be a case where...
