VIEWS ON FILM review of Her Affair to Die For

Warning: Spoilers
"You've done enough". You can say that again. Being a potential homewrecker, a lousy roomie, and a murderous millennial is quite enough. Meghan Carrasquillo, well she channels all these things as Alyssa Winters in 2023's Her Affair to Die For.

Clocking in at the standard running time (90 minutes give or take) and filmed in what looks like Atlanta, GA (Hollywood's mainstay playground), Her Affair to Die For is plot over plot over plot. It's like the Lifetime network wanted to ditch the schlock and make you bask in its ripening. I applaud the effort. Too bad "Affair" starts with a bang and ends with a whimper, concluding with a weak, Fatal Attraction-like cessation where you say, "um, that's it?" "No prize?" "No true corollary?"

That's not to say that Her Affair to Die For doesn't have decent performances and/or intrigue that masks its predictability because it does. It really does. TV director Tamar Halpern makes the most of sparse set locations and creation of physical space that sort of dissolves as you take in a watch. No matter. There's a lot more going on in "Affair" than Vivica A. Fox popping in at the magic moment and saying one of her "you picked the wrong" lines. No Fox here and no camp when it comes to Her Affair to Die For, just Lifetime getting back to basics.

In "Affair", there's the husband character who's up for a promotion but doesn't make enough time for his college daughter and wife (check). There's the antagonist female who crushes on said husband and will off anyone in her path in order for them to be together (check it). There's the cops who are never around until the very end when a home invasion goes down (check the technique). Finally, there's that opening flashback scene that gets regurgitated about an hour in to let the audience know how cray cray the villain really is (quadruple jump checkers!). Bottom line: Her Affair to Die For has all its mythos points fitting like duplicate keys in keyholes. It's recommendable for at least most of the way.

The last 20 minutes sucked - aka "An Affair To Die For"
gymnckv31 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was enjoying this film until the last 20 minutes when it totally went off the rails. It was the scene where Marcus' doctor friend/roommate Craig Porter stabs Liz in a mugging while wearing a hoodie. As if. Message: Black men are thugs even if they are doctors. And no doctor would jeopardise their career and open themselves up to blackmail just at the request of some random psycho.

I liked the film because Alyssa's machinations were cleverly done, and the dialogue & acting was spot on and kind of refreshing - until it wasn't. But Noah sleeping with Alyssa was just not realistic, even if he was drunk.

I loved when Alyssa told Noah she was pregnant & he was like: "No you're not! It's only been a few days, you psycho." Hilarious.

I loved Logan Mariner as Christina Davis and Jon Brown as Marcus Jackson. They were my favourite characters and were cute & charming in their scenes. If it wasn't for the last 20 minutes I would've given this film an 8.

Typical and very predictable!!!!
msvicki122411 March 2023
I wanted to like this typical and sooooooo predictable movie!!!! Dumb daughter quickly becomes friends with psycho and stupid girl whom she doesn't know and of course all hell breaks loose!!! Dumb father doesn't notice psycho girl flirting with him as well as all of the things going on around him because hes he's just that stupid and blind!!!! How many movies have been done this way??? Poison Ivy with Drew Barrymore was better than this and so was The Crush with Alicia Silverstone therefore I don't know why this crap was even made??? The idiot father is married to a beautiful woman who loves him and yet he falls for a girl who isn't even cute but unfortunately that's usually how it goes!!! Lol There was nothing new here!!! Been there, done that!!! If you're bored, watch this movie but other than that don't waste your time!!! Go watch The Crush and Poison Ivy, those movies did it first and wayyyyyyyy BETTER!!!!!

Typical Lifetime simple plot movie!
haroot_azarian27 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Someone said this was a typical and very predictable in one of the contributions and I tend to agree. Right from the beginning I discovered similarities in plot with another Lifetime movie, Designed for Death (2021).

Basically as Lifetime movies go we have clueless characters, crazy obsessed villain, and someone with love interest creeping on one of the characters.

The movie is about a couple in a problematic marriage. The husband is a lawyer who is busy on a case which could give him the promotion that he wants. His wife is a stay at home wife who is desperately trying to set up her own baking business and open her own bakery and feels neglected by her husband.

Their daughter is clueless about her parents' marital problems. She is a law student who has just rented an apartment and is looking for a roommate to help with the rent and bills. In enters the psycho, as the roommate and immediately strikes a friendship with the daughter and sets her eyes on her dad.

With regards to the acting, at the beginning of the movie the acting was average, but as it progressed it just took a sharp nosedive into patheticdom, especially the father/husband's acting. The daughter's confrontation with her dad and psycho in the park was absolutely pathetic. At least they could have been given better lines to make up for the terrible acting, but no the lines were also terrible.

The only one who's acting was pretty good was the mother (Liz) played by Christina Licciardi. The rest of the cast were anywhere from mediocre to diabolical. Oh and the best part was towards the end where the creepy neighbor Sam got told by dad to back off from sniffing around his wife. Anyway if you're bored and got nothing to do watch this movie. But do not subscribe or pay-per-view to watch it.

The Wrong Roommate
lavatch21 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This film would be good entry into the long-running film series of "The Wrong ________ ." In this case, it is the wrong roommate, Miss Alyssa Winters.

The filmmakers were successful in juggling multiple plot strands, including the fragile marriage of Noah and Liz Davis. Noah is bucking for a promotion as a corporate attorney, and Liz is attempting to start a bakery. Each partner feels a lack of support from the other.

Then, there is the cutthroat competition between Noah and Peter at work. If Noah loses to Peter Buchanan, he may have to start his own business. Peter's tactics are unsavory, and it appears as though Noah may lose the promotion.

Finally, there is the Davis's daughter, Christina, a law student looking for a roommate to share costs. Christina is taken in by the charm of Alyssa, and it is the worst mistake of her young life.

There were plenty of fireworks throughout the film with Alyssa's specialty being a family destroyer. In Texas, she murdered the wife of a doctor and may have left him permanently in a wheel chair.

The best relationship in the film was that of husband and wife. There was a genuine bond between Noah and Christina and solid performances from the two actors.

Some of the scenes were far-fetched, such as the decent Dr. Craig Porter succumbing to the flighty Alyssa in a hospital linen closet and her subsequent blackmail threat. But the family drama had some genuine feeling, even if the actresses playing mother and daughter seemed like they were the same age. As for the multiple titles of this film, "Hands Off My Father" and "Her Affair to Die For," the best choice would definitely be "The Wrong Roommate."
