When Karen Pittman calls for our early-morning interview, she’s noticeably perky for someone who wrapped filming at 2 a.m. the night before. She’s in the midst of shooting “Forever,” Mara Brock Akil’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s seminal — and controversial — 1975 novel about two teens’ first love and intimacy.
“I love it! Fingers crossed it keeps going like this for the next 20 to 30 years,” Pittman says, laughing off the tiring schedule. “I’m not a workaholic, but I’m just very committed. I’m devoted to this work. I get the chance to tell a meaningful story about where women are right now.”
In the Netflix series, Pittman plays Dawn Edwards, an upper-middle-class mother whose high-school-age son Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.) is at the center of the show’s “forever love” story.
“She is a working mother in a successful marriage. She’s bright; she’s ambitious for...

When it comes to the race to win an Emmy, there will be a collective buzz around the award’s 60+ categories until Sept. 15 when we find out who gets the gold.
Arguably one of the most highly competitive awards doesn’t happen at the main event but the weekend before at the Creative Arts ceremony. That’s when the winners in the four guest performer categories (which include guest actor and actress in both comedy and drama genres) are awarded for a one-time or re-curring role. (Think Jamie Lee Curtis’ two-episode performance on FX’s “The Bear” — a likely candidate.)
In looking back at early precursors, this award has quite a checkered past with numerous category name changes and head-scratching nominee groupings over the years. For example, in 1977, the bracket was called outstanding single appearance in a comedy or drama series. There was no separation by genre, so nominees included...

Anjelica Huston to Lead Agatha Christie ‘Towards Zero’ Adaptation From BBC and Britbox International
Oscar winner Anjelica Huston will lead a three-part adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel “Towards Zero” from the BBC and Britbox International.
Set in England in 1936, “Towards Zero” follows British tennis star Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and his ex-wife Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland), who “make the unthinkable decision to spend a summer together at Gull’s Point, their childhood home and the coastal estate of Nevile’s aunt, Lady Tressilian (Huston),” the plot description reads.
“With unfinished business between the former childhood sweethearts, plus the presence of Nevile’s new wife Kay (Mimi Keene), tensions are running high. Add to this a long-suffering lady’s companion, a mysterious gentleman’s valet, an exiled cousin with a grudge, a venerable family lawyer, an inquisitive orphan and a French con man, and soon there will be murder,” the synopsis continues. “A troubled detective must rediscover his purpose to untangle a toxic web of jealousy,...

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall with its third season and with it comes the show’s best cast to date. Nicole Beharie, Jon Hamm, Tig Notaro, and Stephen Fry all joined the cast while mainstays Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup all turned in their best work yet.
However, it’s the show’s supporting players, who have been here since day one, that makes the series so good. Karen Pittman is a prime example of that. The series depicts the behind-the-scenes drama of a US morning TV show and Pittman plays Mia Jordan, a key producer of said show. Pittman has always been an actress who possesses a powerful screen presence and that is true here, too. She captivates audiences (and the other actors) but also smartly sews vulnerability into a character who has some power in the show.

In the week since our 2024 Emmy predictions center expanded to include the guest acting categories, a strong consensus has formed around four potential winners from three different series. The one show that is expected to achieve double victories in this area is FX’s “The Bear,” which won’t have much trouble doing so if our users are correct about it taking up seven of the possible 12 comedy guest nomination slots.
The widely predicted guest winners from “The Bear” are Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis, the former of whom was just nominated last year for the show’s inaugural season. The likeliest drama guest victors are potential Emmy first-timer Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”) and 2021 champ Claire Foy (“The Crown”). Foy would be only the third actress to win twice in her category for one role, after Patricia Clarkson (“Six Feet Under”) and Margo Martindale (“The Americans”).

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

Darryl Hickman, who appeared in such films as The Grapes of Wrath and Leave Her to Heaven as a youngster before becoming a CBS executive in charge of daytime drama and an actor once more, has died. He was 92.
Hickman, who lived in Montecito, died Wednesday, his family announced.
He was the older brother (by three years) of the late Dwayne Hickman, who starred on the 1959-63 CBS comedy The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Darryl appeared with his brother in Captain Eddie (1945) — he played famed fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker as a boy — and on three first-season episodes of Dobie as older brother Davey, who came home from college.
In 1951, after appearances in more than 40 movies, Hickman — who had been a contract player at Paramount and MGM — became disillusioned with the business and entered a monastery, though he was back in show business before long.

Following his 2015 Emmy win for the final season of “Mad Men,” Jon Hamm took a large step back from TV stardom in order to beef up his film resume with titles such as “Baby Driver,” “Richard Jewell,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Now that he has made a splashy return to the small screen by playing new roles on “Fargo” and “The Morning Show” and reprising one on “Good Omens,” his Emmy nominations total could instantly rise from 16 to 19. If all of his possible 2024 bids come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.

Few horror movies in the last several decades have left quite as much a psychological scar as "Rosemary's Baby" from 1968, a widespread cultural obsession among genre fans that has now led to a prequel film called "Apartment 7A," which has long been in the works and finally has a release window.
We first heard about "Apartment 7A" back in 2022, which was meant to tell the story of the eponymous apartment before Rosemary Woodhouse ever moved in and experienced the story's awful events. First told in author Ira Levin's best-selling novel, the main setting of that old, eerie-looking building on Central Park West ranks high among the likes of the Overlook Hotel from "The Shining," the Nostromo in "Alien," and other famous horror locales. Now, we're finally getting an origin story -- of sorts -- with ties going all the way back to the controversial Roman Polanski-directed classic.

Apple TV’s “The New Look” tells the story of Christian Dior (Emmy champ Ben Mendelsohn) as he struggles to create a new fashion line in Paris soon after the end of World War II. He comes into conflict with the legendary designer Coco Chanel (Oscar winner Juliette Binoche). This sumptuous costume drama spares no expense and showcases these two award-winning actors.
Critics have embraced the show, too, with Angie Han (The Hollywood Reporter) calling it “handsome and heartbreaking.” Among the others giving it rave reviews:
Joyce Slaton (Common Sense Media) observed: “‘The New Look’ is a powerful and complex look at what terror and oppression does to people both ordinary and extraordinary alike; not an easy watch, but a great one.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) noted: “‘The New Look’ is a fine addition to the recent group of World War II dramas set mostly outside of battle, including the...

Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” has quickly become one of television’s most exciting shows. Based on the book by Mick Herron, the show combines razor-sharp writing (from showrunner Will Smith of “The Thick of It” fame) with masterclass acting from the likes of Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.
The series follows the lives of those working at Slough House, a division of MI5 where disgraced agents who have made mistakes are exiled. It’s full of wit and humor, as one would expect from a show created by an alum of “The Thick of It,” but it’s also a genuine thriller, too, as all the best spy stories are. And critics have fallen for it since its inception, continuing to heap praise on this third season.
Fran Hoepfner (Slate) noted: “Part ‘Killing Eve’, part John le Carré lite, ‘Slow Horses’ continues to stand head and shoulders above...

Julia Garner is one of the most promising young actors in the industry at present, and her role in Ozark proved it without a shadow of a doubt. While the actress has carved a niche for herself in the thriller genre, her versatility knows no bounds.
Garner has already found fame with the Netflix show. However, her career is set to get a big boost with Marvel Studios nabbing her to play an iconic character in the new Fantastic Four film. Garner is a rare prodigy, but her one fear on the sets of Ozark proved that she is still as human as anyone else.

Patience is a virtue, especially if you're a sci-fi fan.
When it comes to genre TV, science fiction and sci-fi adjacent programs are often saved when unceremoniously dumped by a network.
Jericho, Lucifer, The Expanse, and Stargate Sg-1 all found new life after cancellation. Today, Snowpiercer joins that list.
AMC Networks announced today that it has acquired the exclusive U.S. linear and streaming rights to all four seasons of the post-apocalyptic drama series Snowpiercer.
The first three seasons of the critically acclaimed drama will stream on AMC+ later this year, leading up to the series’ season four premiere on AMC and AMC+ in early 2025.
This should come as excellent news for TV Fanatics, as the show always drove discussion and fueled passionate viewers with much to say.

James Clavell’s historical epic novel Shōgun was first adapted for television back in 1980. It starred Richard Chamberlain as John Blackthorne, an English sailor who gets caught up in a Japanese civil war in the early 1600s, and Japanese cinema legend Toshirô Mifune as Toranaga, a feudal lord at odds with the rest of his country’s ruling class. This NBC version did not feature subtitles, so the Japanese dialogue was only translated in scenes where bilingual characters were interpreting for Blackthorne. Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith in Prime’s latest original series inspired by the 1996 series and 2005 film of the same name. Playing a long-married couple in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Parker Posey and Wagner Moura are twinned forces of nature. They’re weird, they’re obnoxious, they’re so cheerful they’re borderline terrifying, and so obviously wild about each other they’re almost endearing. Whenever they’re onscreen, the entire show seems to sit up and hold its breath, eagerly aware that anything might happen in their presence.
Alas, they’re also guest stars. The couple actually at the center of the Prime Video comedy are the rather more sedate John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine). Mr. & Mrs. Smith has its delights, with a plot that sends the duo on glamorous top-secret missions to one picturesque location after another. But it’s all built on the wobbly foundation of a romance that’s more interesting in theory than in practice.

The film will attempt to tell the true story of what went on behind the scenes before the broadcast premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, highlighting the real-time bedlam with some of the most legendary names in American comedy. Reitman co-wrote the script with his "Ghostbusters" collaborator Gil Kenan and is basing the story on the firsthand accounts of those who were there. Lest we forget, Reitman's father is the legendary Ivan Reitman, so these comedy titans were the friends and colleagues of the family. If anyone can get serious insight, it's Reitman.

If there’s one upcoming MCU project that has been talked about in recent times, it’s ‘Thunderbolts.’ In September Kevin Feige announced that David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko would be reprising their roles as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Ava Starr/Ghost, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, John Walker/U.S. Agent, and Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, respectively, in the film. He also confirmed that Yelena Belova would be a part of the Thunderbolts team in the film.
Now, the cast of the upcoming movie was the most talked-about aspect of the movie. Initially, Steven Yeun was cast to play Sentry in the movie, and the confirmation followed soon. Fans were not exactly ecstatic with that casting choice, citing obvious differences in how Steven Yeun looks and how comics accurate Sentry is supposed to look; even with a muscle suit and heavy use of CGI,...

Shiv Roy may have had to reach for her superior’s hand at the end of “Succession,” but Sarah Snook only extended her arm Monday night to receive her trophy. The Australian actor won the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, marking her first victory overall.
Previously, Snook had been nominated twice for playing the ruthless political consultant turned aspiring Waystar Royco CEO. Both nods came in the Supporting Actress category, but she — along with her onscreen sibling, Kieran Culkin — moved to the Lead categories for “Succession’s” final season.
Snook triumphed in a stacked category. Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) has 15 Emmy nominations throughout her career, and she’s won twice. Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) is a four-time nominee who many consider long overdue for a win herself. This is Sharon Horgan’s first acting nomination at the Emmys, but she’s also nominated for writing this year,...

Among the highly anticipated upcoming MCU projects, ‘Thunderbolts’ has been a frequent topic of discussion. In September, Kevin Feige revealed the return of David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko in their respective roles for the film. Additionally, Yelena Belova was confirmed as part of the Thunderbolts team.
Rumors then circulated about Steven Yeun playing Sentry, which was later confirmed. However, Yeun recently withdrew from the role due to scheduling conflicts resulting from the recently concluded SAG-AFTRA strike. Now, according to Daniel Richtman, a reliable source, Austin Abrams is reportedly being considered for the role of Sentry.

Regardless, Abrams bears a striking resemblance to the comic-accurate Sentry, particularly in his pre-Golden Sentry serum days, during his less-than-ideal moments.

“Succession” stayed winning with its third Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series on Sunday night, tying “The X-Files” and “Mad Men” for the most wins in the category. Since it’s over, it won’t have the chance to grab the solo record, but it did make Globe history in another way: It’s never lost the category.
The HBO hit, which earned a record-breaking nine nominations for its fourth and final season, was not nominated for Best Drama Series for its first season, only receiving one bid in supporting actor for Kieran Culkin. It promptly made up for that with an unbeaten tear, winning for Season 2 in 2020, Season 3 in 2022 and now Season 4.

Neither “The X-Files” nor “Mad Men” can boast a perfect record in the category as they both won three times from four nominations. However, they each were unbeaten at one point.
