We all think we know Seth Rogen. He’s the stoner king, the oversized kid fighting off adulthood, the comedy icon that Judd Apatow built almost from scratch after the two met just before the turn of the millennium on the set of the woefully short-lived NBC series “Freaks and Geeks.” Yes, Rogen is all these things, but to limit his influence strictly to his talents as a funnyman is to wrongly shortchange him. At the not-so-advanced age of 40, the actor who was born on April 15, 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia is also a prolific writer and producer of product on screens big and small. He even co-wrote an episode of “The Simpsons.”
Moreover, the Rogen that audiences saw in “The Fabelmans” from director and co-writer Steven Spielberg bears little resemblance to the Rogen who entered the zeitgeist in such fun-loving, maturity-challenged raunchfests as “Superbad” and “Pineapple Express” more than a decade ago.

The Golden Globes nominated five films this year for both director and screenplay. The Globes only offer one screenplay category rather than splitting into two with original and adapted like most other awards groups. This means that if your film gets into this category, they really, really love your writing.
Writing and directing seem like they would be paired together often but the two awards have only been awarded to the same film once in the last decade. That was in 2017 when Damien Chazelle won both awards for “La La Land,” which also won Best Comedy/Musical Picture. The other nine years saw a split. Here’s the breakdown.
In 2014, Spike Jonze won Best Screenplay for “Her” while Alfonso Cuarón emerged victorious in the directing race for “Gravity.” The year later, Richard Linklater took home Best Director for “Boyhood” while four writers won for “Birdman:” Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone,...

Hey, Danielle Brooks: Just because your film “The Color Purple” was snubbed in the top movie race at the Golden Globes on Monday morning, that doesn’t mean you can’t still win the supporting actress trophy. In fact, this exact same scenario has happened five times in the past 16 years, with reigning champ Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) being the most recent example.
While “The Color Purple” was predicted by Gold Derby to receive four total nominations on December 11, it only wound up with two: Brooks in supporting actress and Fantasia Barrino in lead comedy/musical actress. The Warner Bros. crowd-pleaser was snubbed for comedy/musical film and for Taraji P. Henson in supporting actress, among others. See what Gold Derby editors had to say about all of those snubs and surprises.

Michael Fassbender is a two-time Academy Award nominee who trained at the Drama Centre London before touring with the Oxford Stage Company; he’s performed Chekov and Shakespeare and worked a veritable who’s who of greatest living directors. Rookie actor Kaimana had never even considered trying to be an actor, noting she avoided school plays “like the plague.” Yet the two form a winning pair in “Next Goal Wins,” the funny, touching, uplifting new film from “Jojo Rabbit” filmmaker Taika Waititi, hitting theaters Nov. 17.
Based on the 2014 documentary of the same name, “Next Goal Wins” finds Fassbender playing Thomas Rongen, a coach whose anger management and alcohol issues finds him shipped off to American Samoa to lead the national football team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. He is set up to fail — the team is widely regarded as a punchline in the sport. But, fortunately, the team...

Danny Boyle is the Oscar-winning director who has brought his boundless energy, visual aplomb and wicked sense of humor to a number of genres, excelling at science fiction, horror, romance and comedy. He most recently achieved box office success with the musical fantasy “Yesterday” (2019). But how does it stand up to the rest of his filmography? Let’s take a look back at all 13 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1956 in Manchester, England, Boyle got his start in theater and television before making his movie debut with with the macabre thriller “Shallow Grave” (1994), made when he was 38-years-old. He became an art house darling with his second feature, “Trainspotting” (1996), a comedic drama about a group of Edinburg heroin addicts. With films as diverse as the zombie chiller “28 Days Later” (2003), the children’s fantasy “Millions” (2004) and the sci-fi epic “Sunshine” (2007), he established his distinctive style of bright colors,...

Michael Fassbender and David Fincher teaming up makes perfect sense. The duo work together so well in their new movie “The Killer” that it’s a wonder that they haven’t collaborated before. Netflix is releasing it theatrically on Oct. 27 and it will start streaming on Nov. 10.
In the new thriller, Fassbender plays a cold, meticulous, philosophizing hitman who must go on a mission to right his own wrong when he makes a mistake on a job. He’s also out for revenge, as is par for the course for a lot of assassin movies. But what isn’t par for the course is Fassbender’s lean and mean performance. We very rarely hear him speak in his actual scenes. Instead, we mostly hear him in a constantly-running voiceover, Fassbender utilizing his rasping voice to good effect. In his scenes, it’s Fassbender’s physicality — from impressive yoga to brutal...

Most of the time, an actor doesn’t win an Academy Award on his or her first nomination. Often, the magic doesn’t happen until their second or third (or even later) try. Take the case of the late Alan Arkin, who didn’t cash his Academy Award ticket until winning for “Little Miss Sunshine” in 2006 — on his third try. The third time was the charm for Jessica Chastain, too, when she came away from Oscar night trophy-less twice before earning the gold for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” in 2021.
There are a handful of solid contenders for Oscar nomination for the 2024 ceremony who are looking to win for the first time on what they hope will be their third bid:
Robert Downey Jr., nominated for “Chaplin” in 1993 and “Tropic Thunder” in 2009 without winning who has designs on the statuette for the biopic “Oppenheimer.”

Michael Fassbender has reaped two Oscar bids to date and could well find that third time is the charm this year. He delivers two vastly different performances in Taika Waititi‘s comedy “Next Goal Wins” and David Fincher‘s thriller “The Killer.”
The first film, which debuted at TIFF on September 10 to a warm reception, tells the true story of soccer coach Thomas Rongen, who took charge of the American Samoa squad who coming off an infamous World Cup loss to Australia with a score of 31-0. Fassbender portrays Rongen and the movie marks a return by Waititi to his roots in comedy. Fassbender could well reap a bid at the Golden Globes, where’s he contended three times on the drama side for his leading roles in “Shame” (2012) and “Steve Jobs” (2016) and his featured part in “12 Years a Slave” (2014).
The Irish actor also headlines David Fincher‘s “The Killer.

“The Killer” bowed at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Sunday, September 3. Directed by three-time Oscar nominee David Fincher in his first film since 2020’s “Mank,” it stars Michael Fassbender as a hitman. The storyline is described thusly: A man, solitary and cold, methodical and unencumbered by scruples or regrets, the killer waits in the shadows, watching for his next target. And yet the longer he waits, the more he thinks he’s losing his mind, if not his cool. A brutal, bloody and stylish noir story of a professional assassin lost in a world without a moral compass.”
Fincher is said to have been attached to the “Killer” project since 2007, when it was set at Paramount. It followed Fincher over to Netflix under Fincher’s overall deal with the streamer.
Early reviews have been positive-to-mixed. As of this writing, “The Killer” rates 88% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes based on 16 reviews, with...

Kate Winslet and awards go hand in hand, don’t they? The Oscar winner recently took home her freshet golden gongs after winning not one but two BAFTAs at Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards. She won Best Actress and Best Single Drama for her searing Channel 4 drama “I Am Ruth” to bring her BAFTA awards total up to four — she previously won three BAFTA Film Awards: “Sense and Sensibility” in 1996 (Supporting Actress); “The Reader” in 2009 (Leading Actress); “Steve Jobs” in 2016 (Supporting Actress). A production of Rimsky Productions and Washington Square Films, Park Avenue follows a mother and daughter who, over a fraught six weeks, reveal secrets, unravel lies and ultimately lay bare the ties that bind. Paralyzed by her life wrangling cattle in Alberta, Canada, Charlotte (Waterston) jumps into her Ford Bronco, flees her over-controlling husband, and lands back in her childhood Park Avenue apartment where she takes refuge with her mother Kit (Shaw). Rediscovering the boy she loved, now her grown doorman Anders (Spencer), and the life she left at 18, the mother and daughter explore shared history, unshared truths and find a way to face both love and loss.

The conversation about who could be the next James Bond is, seemingly, eternal. And we’re here to keep peddling that topic of discussion until the new 007 is officially announced (and then we’ll start talking about who could be the next Bond after that). Bond boss Barbara Broccoli has said that a new Bond film is some way off still but given that Daniel Craig‘s final outing as Britain’s best spy came in 2021 (“No Time to Die”), surely some news on the new Bond is coming soon? Either way, here are 30 actors we think would be incredible as agent 007.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Taylor-Johnson is fast becoming the bookies’ favorite. Broccoli said that they are looking for an actor to be Bond for around 15 years. At 32, Taylor-Johnson would tick that box. Plus, the actor has some experience in a big franchise — he starred as Pietro Maximoff in the MCU...

The entrance and exit of the BlackBerry smartphone is truly an all-thumbs tale – that of a beloved keyboard on a game-changing wireless device, and a Canadian company (Research in Motion) not terribly dexterous with innovation after the market pie went from “CrackBerry”-flavored to Apple-forward.
Equal parts high-tension business saga and nerd comedy, Matt Johnson’s feature “BlackBerry” – adapted with co-writer Matthew Miller from a book about the phone’s meteoric life (“Losing the Signal”) — parses the origins of the device’s success and the seeds of its downfall. Naturally, the story is bracketed by scrappy sorcery on one end and Steve Jobs’ competition-destroying genius on the other, but at its heart is the strange-bedfellows relationship between soft-spoken engineer Mike Laziridis (a silver-haired Jay Baruchel) and his shrewd, take-no-prisoners co-ceo Jim Balsillie.
The result, at a well-paced but unnecessarily long two hours, is a seriocomic cautionary tale of butting personalities in a fast-changing world,...

Plenty of music biopics are content to shoot their subjects’ iconic concerts straightforwardly, as though extended, by-the-numbers recreations of tour dates are what audiences expect and want to see. “Elvis” rejects that approach. From the way it zests the rock-and-roll king’s catalogue to its live-wire cinematography, Baz Luhrmann’s maximalist, jewel-toned vision reintroduces Elvis Presley to modern audiences through a kaleidoscopic experience that emulates the novelty which electrified ‘50s-era crowds.

Before he was a household name, Seth Rogen was really determined to become one. Back when his only notable role was as Ken Miller in the cult hit "Freaks and Geeks," the up-and-coming actor had big ambitions to take over Hollywood -- if only so that, as he told Vanity Fair in 2012, he could "get girls to sleep with [him]". In fact, before he gained major fame for his role in early 2000s Judd Apatow comedies, Rogen said he was "incredibly angry and repressed," despite his reputation as a down-to-earth, slightly sarcastic nice guy.
Clearly the young Canadian had something to prove, and Apatow had taken notice. The soon-to-be king of blockbuster comedy was planning his takeover of the genre and was going to bring Rogen along for the ride if it killed him. As "Freaks" writer J. Elvis Weinstein put it, Apatow was seemingly on "a mission to make this kid a star.

These days, Seth Rogen is showing up in Steven Spielberg movies and posting pictures of his pottery on Twitter. But back in the early-2000s, he had a near-legendary run appearing in Judd Apatow comedies, which truly jump-started his career. After his supporting role alongside Steve Carell in Apatow's 2005 effort "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," Rogen took on the starring role in the director's next project: the romantic comedy "Knocked Up."
Playing Ben Stone, the lovable stoner with a slacker mentality, the actor was described by Peter Sciretta in /Film's original "Knocked Up" review, as someone who "reminds me of a lot of my friends." Scenes with Ben and his band of layabout buddies feel like you're watching actual friends hanging out and busting balls. In fact, the movie succeeded in realistically depicting all kinds of life situations. Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann's Pete and Debbie felt so much like an...

Seth Rogen 15 best movies ranked, including ‘The Fabelmans,’ ’50/50,’ ‘Steve Jobs’ and more [Photos]

With "The Fabelmans," which our review called "One of Steven Spielberg's warmest, most autobiographical films," the revered filmmaker now has a movie about his own origin story. Considering what the filmmaker has accomplished in the industry in more than half a century, it's fitting. But unlike superhero origin stories, there are no villains in this one, though that role could have easily been filled by Seth Rogen's character.
In the movie — which Spielberg directed and co-wrote with longtime collaborator Tony Kushner — Rogen plays Bennie, an honorary uncle to Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle), a Jewish boy based on Spielberg who grows up in post-World War II America with dreams of becoming a filmmaker. Sammy discovers that his mother, Mitzi (Michelle Williams), has an affair, cheating on his workaholic father, Burt (Paul Dano), with Bennie.

Over the past seven years, Patricia Arquette has pulled off the impressive feat of scoring three Golden Globe wins in as many acting categories. After first being honored with the 2015 Best Film Supporting Actress prize for “Boyhood,” she received two television trophies for her work on the limited series “Escape at Dannemora” and “The Act”. Now, her dramatic performance on Apple TV+’s “Severance” could lead to her second supporting TV victory, which would make her only the fourth actress to ever achieve four Golden Globe wins in less than a decade.
Discounting non-competitive awards, the first woman to become a four-time acting Golden Globe champ in under 10 years was Helen Hunt. Her 1998 Best Film Actress win for “As Good As It Gets” was preceded by a trio of Best TV Comedy Actress triumphs for “Mad About You” (1994-1995; 1997). Her record of four victories across a four-year span was later matched by Sarah Jessica Parker,...

In the TV and film industry, "typecasting" refers to when an actor is consistently given the same kinds of roles. Sometimes, all it takes is a single memorable role for an actor to be cast as a similar character on a regular basis. It can often be a source of frustration for actors who want to branch out and demonstrate their versatility by playing a wide range of characters but are stuck with a label that prevents them from doing so. However, some actors seem to have no problems being constantly cast as the "mad scientist," the "loveable dufus," the "strong silent hero," or another type. After all, a regular paycheck is a regular paycheck.
Some actors have been lucky enough to make a successful career out of sticking to a certain genre only to branch out into roles completely unlike their previous work — often to critical acclaim. Here, we...

San Francisco, Sep 8 (Ians) As Apple co-founder late Steve Jobs’ 11th death anniversary inches closer, his friends and family have launched the first-ever Steve Jobs Archive online with his quotes, video/audio addresses and more.
Laurene Powell Jobs, his wife, launched the online archive at Vox Media’s Code conference in the US on Wednesday.
“While we do have some artefacts and some actual real material, the archive is much more about ideas,” she was quoted as saying.
The archive starts with a poetic email Steve Jobs sent to himself about his admiration for humanity.
“I did not invent the transistor, the microprocessor, object oriented programming, or most of the technology I work with. I love and admire my species, living and dead, and am totally dependent on them for my life and well being,” he wrote.

After winning Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress at the 2021 Emmy Awards for her acclaimed turn as detective Mare Sheehan on the crime drama “Mare of Easttown,” Kate Winslet has now raked in a corresponding Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her work on the HBO series. Should the now 13-time nominee have a good night and reign victorious on at the SAG Awards on Sunday night, she’ll take home her fourth career award from the actors guild (and hopefully emulate this moment of exuberance from her Emmy acceptance speech).
In the limited series/TV movie actress category, Winslet finds herself in the company of four actors who are vying for their inaugural SAG Awards wins, including her onscreen “Mare” mom Jean Smart, as well as Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”). As Aaron Sorkin has shifted into becoming a writer-director rather than just a screenwriter, one thing has remained consistent across his three projects as a filmmaker thus far: a musical score by Oscar nominee Daniel Pemberton.
“Just watching him progress as a director, every film, is spectacular,” Pemberton tells Gold Derby in the “Meet the Experts” composers panel. “What I love about him as a collaborator is he trusts you and he wants your input on things. Over the decades, Aaron Sorkin has written numerous incredible TV series and films. TV series like “Sports Night,” “The West Wing,” and “The Newsroom,” along with films such as “Moneyball,” “Steve Jobs,” and last year’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” But if you were to ask a film fan what project they think deserves a sequel, it’s quite likely “The Social Network,” Sorkin’s collaboration with filmmaker David Fincher.

The 16th-century Dutch theologian Desiderius Erasmus famously proclaimed “Clothes make the man.” This is categorically true of James Bond, Ian Fleming’s swashbuckling secret agent, whose costumes through the years — from the Savile Row suits worn by Sean Connery in “Dr. No” and “Diamonds Are Forever” to Pierce Brosnan’s dapper duds courtesy of Italian couture label Brioni in “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “The World Is Not Enough” — have come to personify the British spy as much as his proclivity for glamorous women, Aston Martins and death-defying shoot-outs.
Fleming, in fact, altered the face of spy attire forever. Before the British author put Bond in a navy blue single-breasted suit with a four-in-hand knotted tie, spies were walking around in long trench coats and wide-brimmed hats. So 007 is nothing short of a style icon.

Mark Gordon Pictures acquired screen rights to “The Code Breaker,” based on Walter Isaacson’s “The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race.” The book was published March 9 by Simon & Schuster, and spent several weeks on the top of New York Times best sellers list.
The book centers on how Doudna and her collaborators invented an easy-to-use tool to edit DNA. The Nobel Prize winning scientist’s DNA work has been central in the rapid development of diagnostics and vaccines for coronavirus, along with sickle cell anemia and certain forms of cancer.
“The Code Breaker” will be executive produced by Mark Gordon and Beth Pattinson of Mark Gordon Pictures. Gordon and Isaacson previously collaborated on the producer’s adaptation of Isaacson’s bestselling book “Steve Jobs.” That movie was nominated for two Oscars in acting categories.

Mark Gordon Pictures has snapped up screen rights to Walter Isaacson’s latest book The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing and the Future of the Human Race, about Nobel Prize-winning scientist and co-inventor of Crispr technology Jennifer Doudna, which the label will develop as a limited series.
The project reteams Gordon and Isaacson, the former having previously optioned the latter’s bestselling 2011 biography Steve Jobs, which was turned into a 2015 Oscar-nominated movie directed by Danny Boyle, adapted by Aaron Sorkin and starring Michael Fassbender as Jobs.
The book follows Doudna and her collaborators who turned a curiosity of nature into an invention poised to transform human health: an easy-to-use tool known as Crispr that can edit DNA. Essentially, Crispr-Cas9 allows scientists to rewrite DNA – the code of life – in any organism, including human cells, with unprecedented efficiency and precision, opening up a world of new possibilities and potential. President Biden released a $6 trillion budget proposal for the coming year that includes new social safety net programs paid for by increasing taxes on corporations and the rich.
Although usually the president’s budget is largely ignored by Congress, it is an opportunity for the administration to articulate its priorities and make political statements. Once proposed, Congress then holds hearings on the budget and passes tax and spending legislation. Even with Democrats in control of both chambers, Biden’s budget still faces steep GOP opposition.

With her NCIS: Los Angeles run having come to an end, Renée Felice Smith is ready for her next chapter — somewhat literally, being an author as well as an actress.
In the CBS drama’s Season 12 finale, Smith’s Nell Jones made the decision to not officially sign on as the “new Hetty”/Operations Manager, but instead join partner Eric Beale on an adventure to Tokyo, to head up his tech venture. But before driving off into the sunset, Nell briefly reunited with long-mia Hetty herself, in costar Linda Hunt’s first on-set appearance of the season.

A little over three years ago, the partners at Jax Media took a big gamble.
The New York indie production banner had prospered through its artisanal approach to producing TV series for such multi-hyphenate stars as Samantha Bee, Amy Schumer, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, as well as its ability to execute high-gloss scripted series including “Younger” and “Search Party” on modest budgets.
Jax’s commercial success and creative sensibilities attracted the attention of Imagine Entertainment. The four core Jax partners — producers Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, John Skidmore and Brooke Posch — were nervous as they reached a deal to sell a significant stake to Imagine in early 2018. They worried whether the sale would affect the culture of doing whatever it takes to serve the vision of artists.
“We are a customer-service business,” says Hernandez, who is CEO of the company he founded in 2011.
Today, Jax is bigger and busier than ever,...
