There were some 600,000 self-described "German Christians" who tried to purge the Jewish elements from the Christian church which consisted of Protestant lay people and clergy that rejected the Old Testament. Their goal was to out people defined as non-Aryans from their congregations, deny the Jewish ancestry of Jesus, and remove Hebrew words like 'Hallelujah' from hymns.
