If you're going to profile the samurai warriors of centuries old, you may ads well go with their most famous. SAMURAI examines the life of Miyamoto Musashi, using Mark Decascos to retrace the man's figurative steps throughout Japan. The downside to this is that it's your usual cable TV documentary, kinda cheesy and overly staged. Lots of shots of Dacascos contemplatively riding in cars, eating, leafing through a book, etc. I certainly don't have anything against the guy, he's kind of a badass. Just that the production is a bit ham-fisted.
But it's worth a watch for the neon city and remote village photography of Japan. Not to mention as a history lesson and spotlight on Bushido code and discipline. The reenactment animations were also nice. What was fascinating for me was the forging of a katana. It's really cool to see how much attention is paid to a lethal weapon, as an extension of the soldier himself.
