George Miller’s Mad Max franchise is one of the most revered action franchises of all time. After it spun out the Tom Hardy-starrer Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, all we got is a prequel about the character Furiosa. Starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, two immensely popular actors, the movie made its debut with rave reviews but has been struggling at the box office.

While even fans described the film as incredible to watch, the movie failing to live up to its expectations at the box office can be attributed to one Star Wars movie. Solo: A Star Wars Story was a bomb at the box office despite being based on one of the best fictional characters of all time. And while the two franchises share little similarity, the fate of Solo seems to predict that Furiosa was deemed to fail.

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But nine years have passed, the Fury Road prequel Furiosa is now in theatres,...

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth starrer Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opened last week to great reviews. The film had decent anticipation among audiences, following the massive cult following of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, which was a big awards contender. However, the film has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The film is not performing well at the box office despite the impeccable filmmaking and zany qualities that George Miller’s Mad Max films have been known for. Nine years after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road and nearly 45 years after his original Mad Max movie debut, George Miller brought Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The movie has raised eyebrows for the spectacular action sequences and the gravity of the origin story of the title character after the movie’s premiere at Cannes.

Cannes audiences also honored the Miller-directed movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiorsa with a seven-minute standing ovation. Further, the critical accolades were an indicator of the fact that Furiosa would be the next big hit in the franchise. However, the expectation of the movie took a U-turn when the movie debuted in the theaters on 23 May.

Did Furiosa’s Poor Box Office Performance Get Another Mad Mad Movie Shelved? (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After a surprisingly bad debut at the box office, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might have just ruined the chances of any other Mad Max sequels or prequels. As George Miller wrote Fury Road, he also worked on developing Furiosa and The Wastelands. But given the box office performance of Furiosa, it might have put a halt to the next Mad Max movie.
Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally reached the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he can find redemption with his Mad Max films.

Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally hit the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he finds some high-octane gasoline soon.
The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga bowed to a disappointing $32 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million overseas, diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland, another Max installment Miller has been toying with for years.
Miller and Nico Lathouris wrote the scripts for both The Wasteland and Furiosa as part of the development process of Mad Max: Fury Road, the 2015 Warner Bros. film that became a surprise awards season juggernaut, winning six Oscars, and which became an instant action classic. The Wasteland would follow Max Rockatansky in the year before Fury Road, and is said to involve a young mother — and (naturally) include plenty of action.

The bad times at the summer box office just keep coming this weekend, as George Miller's post-apocalyptic road epic "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" lines up a historic low for the Memorial Day weekend. After grossing $10.2 million on its opening day (including previews), "Furiosa" is on track for a dismal $31 million four-day weekend (per The Wrap), significantly below the $45.4 million three-day debut of "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015. The good news is that "Furiosa" is in a close battle with "The Garfield Movie" for the No. 1 spot. That's the next "Mad Max" spin-off right there! (Jon Arbuckle's Wasteland name would be Jizzboy the Gronk.)
As I covered last week, when John Krasinski's fantasy film "If" opened to similar numbers, Hollywood is currently experiencing the fallout of last year's strikes. Production shutdowns and subsequent release date delays mean that this year's summer slate is short on guaranteed hits,...

This article has some pretty big Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga spoilers.
For 18 years and 148 minutes of runtime, Furiosa simply wants to go home. This primal, human need is a universal motivation, and it takes on mythic proportions in a movie where audiences know that quest is doomed. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is of course being marketed as an “odyssey;” an epic about the formative years of the most badass character to ever cross the Wasteland. Yet because you should remember that the Green Place is long destroyed by the time Mad Max: Fury Road rolls along, this film and Anya Taylor-Joy’s characterization of this woman at its heart is haunted by an air of futility.
… Which makes the unexpectedly hopeful ending all the more beautiful as we discover what exactly Furiosa does beneath a tree with the man who took everything from her.

Lady and gentlemens, the great George Miller has returned with another Wasteland tale! Listen to his words carefully! The prequel to the Aussie post-apocalyptic action spectacle Mad Max: Fury Road has pulled up into theaters. While Fury Road gave enough of a background on Charlize Theron’s character to get us behind her as a protagonist, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is Miller’s attempt to expand on it even further with a larger scope than the series has seen before.
Reviews for Furiosa have been positive, with a certified fresh critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% and an audience score of 93%. Our own Chris Bumbray raved in his review, “Miller’s made this a tactile, visceral experience that drives home the point that at seventy-nine, he’s still a master of his craft and making movies directors forty years his junior wouldn’t have the energy or skill to tackle.

Furiosa: A Max Max Saga had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, nearly a decade after the debut of Mad Max: Fury Road at the same festival. The first reviews for Furiosa have begun pouring in, and while they’re just as full of praise as those first reactions, it doesn’t sound like it reaches the heights of Fury Road.
Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman said that while Furiosa contains “a handful of awesome action moments,” the action doesn’t take center stage in the same way it did in Fury Road. “The most important thing to say about ‘Furiosa,’ however, is that what it all adds up to is a movie that can be darkly bedazzling, and that will be embraced and defended in a dozen passionate ways — but it’s one that, to me, falls very short of being a ‘Mad Max’ home run,” Gleiberman wrote.

Since their beginnings in 1979, George Miller’s hyper-jacked Mad Max movies with Mel Gibson had not received a single Oscar nomination, not even for Tina Turner’s great signature song “We Don’t Need Another Hero” in 1985’s Beyond Thunderdome. But then, 30 years later, when finally the fourth and Gibson-less edition appeared, the snooty Academy got on board and gave the newly regenerated Mad Max: Fury Road 10 nominations including for Best Picture and Director. It won six of them, virtually sweeping the crafts categories.
Nine years later comes a prequel, Furosia: A Mad Max Saga, and Miller, now seemingly ageless at 79 (he was 34 when the first one came out) has perhaps given birth to the greatest Max yet, a wheels-up, rock-and-rolling epic that delivers the origin story of the title character Charlize Theron picked up in Fury Road when she was about 26.
That movie only covered about three days total.

Despite Fallout taking place in the aftermath of a nuclear war, it’s truly not the end of the world for the Prime Video series, which has many miles to go.
Fans of video games are fanatics about how faithfully adapted into movies and series, and according to Fallout executive producer Geneva Robertson-Dworet, speaking recently during an interview with cast and creatives at Deadline Studio at Prime Experience, “there is so much we had to leave behind” in Season 1. “[There’s] potentially thousands of hours of gameplay; we have eight hours to tell our story.”

With a Season 2 order under its belt, as well as becoming the most watched Amazon Prime series launch ever per Nielsen with 2.9 billion minutes viewed, Robertson-Dworet says they’ll now “be able to get to so much more that we love about the Fallout world.”

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are ready to “make it epic” when Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga barrels into cinemas on May 24, 2024! As tickets for the full-throttle prequel become available for pre-order, the final Furiosa trailer explodes onto screens with action, drama, and one particular shot that now makes me curious about an element of the film. I’m talking about the shot of the CGI-enhanced War Boy.
My knee-jerk reaction to the CGI-enhanced War Boy is one of apprehension. How large of a role does this character play in the film, and will their cartoonishness offset an otherwise incredible-looking film? I hope not. One of the more thrilling elements of Miller’s Mad Max series is the visual spectacle, and I worry the CGI-enhanced War Boy could be an “arrow to the knee.” I could be entirely off base, and I’m simply being paranoid for no good reason.

Despite the popular misconception, Prime Video’s Fallout TV show followed not three but four main characters — but while the three most prominent of them shared their goals and crossed their paths on a regular basis, the last one was left alone. He’s often not even considered a main character at all, but his story proved to be the most intriguing and nerve-wracking in Season 1.
Norman’s Often Regarded as a Side Character
Norman MacLean, Lucy’s little brother, stayed in Vault 33 when his sister ventured out into the Wasteland to find their father. With that, his story as a minor character seemed pretty much concluded — except it wasn’t as he was not a minor character. Throughout Season 1, Norm had his own story and a hefty amount of screen time.
Surprisingly, many Fallout TV show fans often claim that there are three main characters in the series, overlooking Norm entirely.

The time has come for audiences to start witnessing George Miller’s newest action epic to see if it takes them to Valhalla or leaves them scrounging for food in the desert. The latest installment of the Mad Max saga spins off from Mad Max: Fury Road and sees Anya Taylor-Joy taking up the role from Charlize Theron. It had recently been confirmed that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will also be the franchise’s longest film, with the Cannes Film Festival website confirming its 2 hour and 28 minute runtime. While that means the film is significantly longer (by a half hour) than Fury Road, it’s worth noting that this prequel tells a truly epic tale that takes place over decades. Fury Road only took place over two days.

George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road spent so much time in development that its previous star, Mel Gibson, seemingly got too old for the action role. Gibson was replaced by Tom Hardy in the 2015 film, which went on to become one of the greatest action films of all time. Fans always wondered whether the Og Max Rockatansky would meet with the new one in any of the future installments. Miller confirmed that it wouldn’t happen and had a perfectly valid reason for it.

Prime Video’s Fallout TV show took the best pages out of other successful shows’ books: filming on location is always better than using those pesky green screens. The Wasteland in the new post-apocalyptic series is stunning, and to some fans, it looked vaguely familiar — but that’s only because it should be. After all, Fallout wasn’t this filming location’s first rodeo.
Fallout Found Its Perfect Wasteland
Even if Jonathan Nolan wanted to create the most authentic Fallout experience, he would not have been allowed to explode a real nuclear bomb to recreate the Wasteland, just like his practical effects-obsessed brother Christopher wasn’t allowed to for Oppenheimer, so the Fallout creator opted for the second best thing.

Before Bethesda acquired Fallout and handed the development over to Todd Howard, the world was already a wonderful place in dystopia. In some way, it had gotten a great deal on a silver platter. Recently, the franchise received a live-action TV adaptation, which has been met with generally favorable reviews, sighing relief to the dubious fan base.
A plethora of interesting Easter eggs have been hidden in the latest TV show, which could easily blow fans’ minds. Fans on the internet are still busy finding more of them. The world they knew remained wasted as they left it in the video games. Bethesda appears to have pulled it straight out of them for the American TV series.

As good as the franchise is, Bethesda should be praised for having purchased it.

Walton Goggins, in a gruesome starring role in Prime Video’s apocalyptic sci-fi series Fallout, said he knew he knew he was in for “an intense experience” having to transform every day on set into The Ghoul, a post-human character with melting flesh, a cowboy persona and some semblance of his humanity still left.
But at Saturday’s Deadline Contenders Television panel, the perennial character actor — beaming in from overseas, where he is shooting The White Lotus — said the task of transformation proved to be “extremely anxiety provoking” at first. He had to figure out how to express himself under a thin layer of sweat-inducing facial prosthesis designed to make him look almost skeletal and how to be a walking, wisecracking horror show with a retainer in his mouth to simulate the absence of teeth.

The fan-favorite post-apocalyptic video game series Fallout is the most prominent it has ever been, with an ambitious live-action television adaptation coming to Prime Video while publisher Bethesda SoftWorks continues to guide the games moving forward.
However, while Bethesda brought Fallout to new heights in 2008 with Fallout 3, the action RPG franchise goes back further by over a decade. There are a lot of iconic video game soundtracks, but none are quite as magical as Fallout’s. There’s a strange alchemy to the way the franchise pairs its ultra-violent combat and desolate, post-apocalyptic setting with wistful mid-century ditties. The music isn’t a mere accompaniment to the gameplay; it’s the beating heart of the series and has made the games so enduring and beloved they’ve spawned an Amazon Prime TV show. In other words, without its licensed soundtrack, Fallout wouldn’t be the phenomenon it’s become.
The franchise’s musical identity has taken over 27 years to develop and evolve, but the ‘50s post-war sentiment of blissful optimism quivering under the looming threat of nuclear war that is felt throughout the series was established in the first game.

Amazon’s upcoming Fallout TV series has fans brimming with excitement, as it offers a glimpse into the grim yet beloved post-apocalyptic world the franchise is known for. As the show nears its premiere, the team behind it has been doing promotional rounds lately, offering insightful nuggets about its development.
However, a recent comment by co-creator Jonathan Nolan has been making waves in the community lately, wherein he described the show as “essentially Fallout 5“, leading to anxieties about it potentially superseding a dedicated Fallout 5 game from Bethesda.

Fallout‘s got a new trailer recently for its TV show; by the looks of it, it is already doing justice to the franchise. Players may have speculated certain things after consuming every bit of the post-apocalyptic world that was shown in the trailer. But if they turn their heads to the conversations and details emerging on the internet, they might as well know the potential ending the show’s developers could be going with.
The TV adaptation of the popular dystopia-focused franchise will follow the story of a Vault Dweller called Lucy (played by Ella Purnell) who is likely to be mentored by Walton Goggins’ Ghoul. Apart from that, it will also feature the Brotherhood of Steel, a quasi-religious technocratic military order featured in all the games.

Given the overwhelming love that Baldur’s Gate 3 has received, it’s a foregone conclusion that the game will receive countless Game of the Year nominations and awards. It’s not hard to see why. The title pushes the boundaries of the Crpg genre forward with its staggering number of narrative routes, character customization options, and polished systems that let players create inventive solutions to almost every problem.
Plus, Baldur’s Gate 3 is technically an indie game, which makes its success even more impressive. However, all good things must come to an end. Despite the myriad of things to do in Baldur’s Gate 3, players will eventually have seen and done it all and will feel the urge to move on to other titles. But what if they still feel the siren call of RPGs? Then there are plenty of other games that will fulfill their needs, and here are...

This year, non-fiction titles will be front and center at the Toronto International Film Festival, as many writers and actors will not be on hand due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Opening night at the 2023 festival brings a documentary world premiere, Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine’s “Copa 71” (seller: Dogwoof), about an historic international women’s soccer tournament lost to sports history. The filmmakers bring us back to the record-setting crowds assembled in Mexico City in 1971. U.S. soccer star Alice Morgan and athletes Venus and Serena Williams are among the film’s executive producers.
That’s the sort of unexpected story that veteran TIFF documentary programmer Thom Powers sought for this year’s documentary program of 22 titles from 12 countries. While it’s always painful to whittle down the selection from 800 feature submissions (the post-pandemic production boom continues), Powers looked at giving a boost to sales titles...

Adam Scott never wanted to be anything other than an actor. He has been devoted to his craft ever since his days of appearing in plays in high school. His first notable professional gig was playing a strung-out deliverer of exposition in the not-at-all-remembered 1994 MTV series "Dead at 21," one of the most 1990s things ever. A few years later, Scott appeared in the final theatrically released "Hellraiser" movie, "Hellraiser: Bloodline" in which he played a sweaty, immortal French aristocrat. That same year, he played the unnamed helmsman of the U.S.S. Defiant in "Star Trek: First Contact." Incidentally, his "Star Trek" character has recently shown up in the video game "Star Trek: Timelines" where he was named Helsman Wyatt, presumably after Ben Wyatt, Scott's character on "Parks and Recreation."
Scott has since had a varied, textured career that included both high-profile jobs and low-profile nothings (this author may...

April is the cruelest month, but evidently not for one-man shows starring Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes.
The “Schindler’s List” and “Harry Potter” star’s sister Sophie Fiennes directs a film version of “T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets,” the stage production he brought to London and throughout the UK back in 2021. During the lockdown, Fiennes committed to memory the “Wasteland” poet’s four epic poems written during World War II about man’s relationship to time and the divine. His performance, praised as “magnetic” by The Telegraph, was filmed at the end of his run.
IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for the film version, opening April 28 at the IFC Center in New York City, courtesy of Kino Lorber. An expansion in theaters nationally will follow.
Fiennes’ filmed performance of Eliot’s masterworks is a co-production between The Bath Theatre Royal and Royal & Derngate, Northampton and Lone Star Productions, Amoeba Film and Lonely Dragon Films.

Origins is a recurring series giving artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Michael Goldwasser of Easy Star All-Stars digs into their cover of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream.”
Reggae group Easy Star All-Stars have released a new cover of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream,” which features Alex Lifeson of the rock band Rush. The new single is part of their upcoming album, Ziggy Stardub, a reggae reinvention of Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars.
The mesmerizing rendition strips the gritty sound of the original, leaving a slick and sultry cover in its place. Lifeson closes out the track with an ethereal guitar solo, while Naomi Cowan’s vocals flow through the chilled track, blending his celestial guitar stylings seamlessly. Perfectly balancing an aura of psychedelic and reggae, the essence of Bowie’s classic sci-fi...

Boxing champ Prince Naseem “Naz” Hamed is getting the sports biopic treatment. Paddy Considine and Mena Massoud are aboard to star in Giant.
With The Rise's Rowan Athale writing and directing, the film will follow the true story of Hamed’s (Massoud) humble beginnings on the tough working-class streets of Sheffield and his discovery by Brendan Ingle (Considine), a steel industry worker turned boxing trainer. Their unlikely partnership along with Naz’ unorthodox style, cocky persona and dominance in the ring propelled them to the top of boxing’s elite, all in the face of Islamophobia and racism.
And Athale is excited that a certain Sylvester Stallone, who has some experience with boxing movies, is among the producers. "The story of fabled boxing trainer Brendan Ingle and his tempestuous relationship with protege ‘Prince’ Naseem is both legendary, and truly cinematic,” he says. "It’s exciting, necessary, hilarious, and heartbreaking, and...

Someday, peace will come to our galaxy. But for now, the war rages on with no end in sight, as warriors from each side gather their armies and ready their weapons, preparing to respond to the next strike. That war, of course, is about 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Rian Johnson-directed middle chapter to the Sequel Trilogy. Five years after its release, the film is still heavily debated within the fanbase, with some taking exception with Johnson’s storytelling choices, such as turning Luke Skywalker into a bitter old man who tosses aside an elegant lightsaber and devoting a good chunk of the movie to escapades on a casino planet.
To be sure, the stars of the movie have occasionally weighed in on Johnson’s movie, too. Most notably John Boyega expressed disappointment that The Last Jedi did not do enough to continue his character Finn’s...

While it would be an overstatement to claim that the franchise is in trouble, few would argue that Star Wars is currently at its height. The excitement generated by the first season of The Mandalorian gave way to a mixed response to the lore-heavy second season and to the relatively unpopular The Book of Boba Fett. On the cinematic side of things, both the controversial The Last Jedi and the disappointing The Rise of Skywalker did well at the box office, but no new film is in production yet (and announced projects like Rogue Squadron have been shelved). Animated series such as The Bad Batch certainly continue to do well, and fans largely seemed to enjoy the live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi.
For many, the problem boils down to a matter of focus. Should Star Wars follow the path set by the nine main films and continue to be about the Skywalker family?...

The new Netflix limited series “From Scratch,” starring Zoe Saldaña and Eugenio Mastrandrea, debuted its first trailer Thursday.
Inspired by the New York Times bestselling memoir “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home” by Tembi Locke, the adaptation’s eight hour-long episodes will premiere on the streamer Oct. 21.
“In Italy we have a saying,” Mastrandrea’s voice glides over the opening sequence of Zoe Saldaña’s character studying abroad in Italy. “In dreams, as in love, all is possible.”
“From Scratch” centers on Amahle ‘Amy’ Wheeler (Saldaña) as she leaves her Texas hometown for college, and then the United States entirely for a semester studying abroad in Italy. Though she is planning to go to law school after undergrad, those plans change when she literally bumps into the handsome Sicilian chef, Lino (Mastrandrea).

Over the course of four albums, St. Paul & the Broken Bones have nimbly shifted from retro-soul to futuristic funk and beyond, rarely settling in one spot for too long. Reporting up to BuzzFeed Studios head Richard Alan Reid, Ricci will oversee unscripted projects across BuzzFeed Inc.’s brands, which include BuzzFeed, Complex, Tasty and HuffPost. Scripted projects will continue to be led by Charlotte Simms, BuzzFeed’s director of development for scripted TV.
Ricci comes to BuzzFeed after spending more than a decade at Paramount Global, then called Viacom, as a producer and executive at MTV and VH1 overseeing alternative series like Rob Dyrdek’s Ridiculousness and Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg’s Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. Prior to that role, Ricci led development and programming for MTV2, launching shows like Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ’n Out, Guy Code and Girl Code.

Kino’s Noir boxes offer interesting noir-adjacent crime and mystery pix. This seventh return to the well of darkness brings up the organized crime ‘meller’ Chicago Confidential with Brian Keith and the more ambitious The Boss, starring John Payne and written by Dalton Trumbo. The third show The Fearmakers is a real oddity. Starring Dana Andrews and directed by Jacques Tourneur, it’s a political conspiracy tale about manipulating opinions with fraudulent polls. It sounds a lot like the fractured state of modern America, 65 years later. With commentaries by Jason A. Ney and Alan K. Rode.

“I have no gifts for you and no jokes about my balls,” quipped Carell, a reference to Jo Koy’s stand-up bit before him for Uni’s Easter Sunday, and the sweatshirts he handed out to attendees.
