Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have been busy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately, directing episodes of Moon Knight, Loki season 2, and the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again – but before they entered the Marvel universe, they were known for making genre films like Resolution, Spring, The Endless, Synchronic, and Something in the Dirt. Variety reports that they’re executive producers on the upcoming sci-fi thriller Things Will Be Different, which stars Riley Dandy of Christmas Bloody Christmas and Adam David Thompson of A Walk Among the Tombstones. The film is set to have its world premiere at SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 11th, and in anticipation of that screening, a clip from Things Will Be Different has made its way online. “Love and death are the two great hinges on which all human sympathies turn.”
-B.R. Haydon
Love and death are the two most powerful forces in human experience. They are the engines of our stories because they are the engines of our existence. Our hopes, desires, heartbreaks, and fears so often hang on these two factors—ever-present and constantly in tension. Horror, more often than not, preoccupies itself with the latter but from time to time, a really great horror love story comes along. Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s Spring is not only a great love story but an acknowledgment of the eternal balance of love and death that connects us to each other, the ancient and ongoing human story, and perhaps even the infinite.
Spring is quintessential Moorhead & Benson, who from their first feature, Resolution (2012), to their most recent, Something in the Dirt (2022), have explored vast and...

Here at /Film, we have talked quite a bit about how much we love genre-specific streaming services like Shudder or Alter, but does such a platform exist for fans of science fiction? Sure, there's always the Syfy channel on cable, but with so many people cutting cords and pivoting exclusively to streaming, you may be wondering where to find new and unique sci-fi stories. Well, may we interest you in Dust? A sister site of Alter, Dust comes from the folks at Gunpowder and Sky, the independent studio behind hits like "Summer of 84," "Tragedy Girls," "Her Smell," "Hearts Beat Loud," "Call Me Miss Cleo," and "Kobe Bryant's Dear Basketball."
A hub for the very best in sci-fi short films, Dust also has a live linear channel constantly playing from their selection of shorts, so if you don't feel like wading through the selections, you can let the service choose for you.

As negotiating committees for the WGA and the AMPTP meet Wednesday for the first time in nearly a month, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator, said a resolution to the writers’ strike would be a “reason for optimism” for striking actors.
“It would certainly be a good sign if the WGA and the studios and streamers are able to reach a deal,” Crabtree-Ireland said in a SAG-AFTRA Instagram Live on Wednesday afternoon. “It will mean that the studios and streamers have made moves in the same direction that we are looking for them to make moves.”
While a new deal between the writers’ guild and the studios might offer some hope to SAG-AFTRA members, Crabtree-Ireland reminded listeners of the issues distinct to actors that have yet to be negotiated since SAG-AFTRA joined striking writers on the picket line in mid-July.

Back in 2019 Dn spoke with filmmakers Visitor (Aka George Thomson and Lukas Schrank) about their music video Resolution, which followed a female sumo wrestler named Tuvsho and her desire to reach the heights of her male-dominated profession. Today we speak with Visitor again, this time about the documentary I am Tuvsho which evolved out of that earlier music video and offers an extended insight into the world of Tuvsho and her ongoing journey within the realm of female sumo wrestling. Much like Resolution, I am Tuvsho uses gorgeous cinematography to weave a stirring account of an impressive athlete that is emblematic of contrasting ideals. Dn joined the co-directors for a revealing conversation about their committed approach to Tuvsho’s story, the evolution of the film post-Resolution and the equipment they opted for that would allow them to create a real and genuine document.

If you love the cultier end of the sci-fi/horror spectrum, chances are that Justin Benson_, one of the clearest distillations of their unique filmmaking voice – and they’re not done with creating original projects.
In fact, as they tell the Script Apart podcast, away from their Marvel work, the duo are beavering away on several of their own projects – one of which is a series not only set in the same continuity as The Endless (aka the ‘Shitty Carl Cinematic Universe’), but focusing once again on the characters of Aaron and Justin.

Addictive Netflix thriller You is finally back. And in Season 4, Charlotte Ritchie gets the unenviable honour of playing the latest obsession of creepy-yet-handsome, ‘I just can’t help falling in love with (and then probably killing) you’ Joe, aka Penn Badgley.
If you’re new to You, it’s the story of bookshop manager Joe Goldberg, who has a pathological tendency to develop dangerous infatuations with women, which usually end in lots of bloodshed and/or a prolonged stay in a plexiglass book vault. Most recently, he’s had a son, whom he was forced to abandon when escaping to a new life across the Atlantic after the nail-biting, catastrophic Series 3 finale.
These days, Joe goes by Professor Jonathan Moore, and is living it up in London town. Charlotte Ritchie’s character is savvy ice-queen and art gallery director Kate, part of a group of wealthy and privileged young Brits Joe gets tangled up with.

"Boardwalk Empire" is something of an outlier in the so-called "Golden Age of Television." The show premiered on September 19, 2010 and received robust critical praise. Despite the reviews, "Boardwalk Empire" did not find the audience enjoyed by its contemporaries and it has not yet matched the reputation of its predecessors. One way or another, the story of Enoch "Nucky" Thompson has been outflanked by "Breaking Bad," "Game of Thrones," "The Sopranos," and "The Wire." Consequently, eight years after its expedited fifth and final season, it's time for something of a retrospective.Set during the 13 years of Prohibition, "Boardwalk Empire" spins fact and fiction into an exquisite tapestry of family, greed, lust, and brutal gangster politics. Nucky Thompson's grip on Atlantic City may be the show's center of gravity, but it also captures the zeitgeist of American organized crime in the early 20th century. The real-life figures are too numerous to quantify here,...

Last year, we heard that the filmmaking duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were “returning to their DIY indie origins” with a new project called Something in the Dirt. Now a teaser trailer for Something in the Dirt has arrived online – and along with that comes the information that the movie is going to receive a theatrical release on November 4th!
Benson and Moorhead directed Something in the Dirt from a script written by Benson. The duo also produced the film and star in it… and the movie was actually filmed in their apartments during the pandemic shutdown. Here’s the story they’re telling with this one:
Two new neighbors witness what seems to be a supernatural event in one of their apartments. At first terrified, they realize that documenting this phenomenon could provide them the lives they’ve always dreamed of.

In "Moon Knight," Isaac plays Steven Grant, aka Marc Spector, a superhero with dissociative identity disorder. With their latest feature together, DIY sci-fi directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead continue to make the low-budget thrillers that have gained them a dedicated fan base. Exploring the cults, phenomena, or time travel concepts that break brains and inspire documentaries, the actors take on the challenge of filling up most roles in a production, constantly highlighting their shared love of going out and making films with their friends. They champion this DIY style, stretching thin budgets and taking narrative risks with each successive film, unafraid to get more than a little weird, confusing, or plain bonkers.
Something in the Dirt finds Benson and Moorhead again picking up the roles of co-directors, co-leads, and shared roles when it comes to writing, cinematography, and editing. Following two Los Angeles loners as they experience supernatural elements wreaking havoc in their apartment building, the film devolves into inner and outer madness, using the...

Doomed bromances fuel the mind-bending genre outings of filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Their body of work to date points to a predilection for the dynamics of fraternal male relationships under strenuous, supernatural circumstances — whether it’s a bond strengthened over years or a fresh spark of camaraderie.
In their 2012 feature debut, “Resolution,” a man attempts to cure his best friend’s addiction as a series of bizarre occurrences begin to torment them. Five years later in “The Endless,” Benson and Moorhead played brothers caught in the grasp of an alien-worshipping cult. And for 2019’s “Synchronic,” they cast Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan as close paramedic pals who come across a drug that permits time travel. Within their unsettling brainchildren, the emotional tribulations that the events put the friendships through are dramatically vital.

Marvel Studios’ Disney Plus expansion continues to chug full-steam ahead, with indie horror filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead signing on to direct episodes of Marvel’s upcoming series “Moon Knight,” Variety has confirmed.
Benson and Moorhead join the project alongside director Mohamed Diab (“Clash”) and showrunner Jeremy Slater (“Umbrella Academy”).
Marvel has yet to officially announce the show’s cast, but in October 2020, Variety reported that Oscar Isaac was in talks to play the title role. Isaac would play Marc Spector, whose dissociative identity disorder manifests as different distinct personas. In one iteration of the character in Marvel Comics, Spector is also the embodiment of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon, and Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has said the show will make use of Egyptian iconography. Diab’s filmmaking career also originated in Egypt.

Yesterday’s special episode of Doctor Who, “Revolution of the Daleks,” was an eventful adventure if ever we’ve seen one. But the story also sets up Jodie Whittaker’s upcoming third season as the Doctor in a subtle way.
The narrative picked up several hours after the events of 2019’s New Year’s Day episode, “Resolution,” depicting the aftermath of the Doctor’s confrontation with the lone Dalek scout. Jack Robertson, a past villain, steals the empty metal shell in a clandestine operation, whereupon a scientist named Leo Rugazzi clones the work to create an army of security drones to sell to the UK government and the world.
Back in interstellar space, meanwhile, the Doctor is still serving time in the Judoon prison. And weirdly enough, it’s been years since we saw her last in the season 12 finale. Luckily for her, Captain Jack Harkness breaks into the seemingly...

I think we can all agree that the 2005 redesign of the Daleks was a huge success, right? Nobody had any issues with them surely? Apart from Raymond Cusick, who originally designed them in 1963, and noted in Doctor Who Confidential ‘To them rivets and bolts are archaic.’ So obviously you can’t please everyone.
Last Thursday, which was approximately four years ago, the Radio Times was released with a new Dalek design on the cover. The slightly taller and thinner black Dalek is based on the Reconnaissance Dalek from the 2018 special ‘Resolution’, something which executive producer Chris Chibnall says is a plot point, describing the 2020 special as a sort of sequel to that episode. It looks better in the trailer than it does in a static image, and it’s been implied that the new design is a variant rather than the standard model.

The new "Doctor Who" Christmas special "Revolution of the Daleks" is a direct sequel to the episode "Resolution:

But according to executive producer Matt Stevens, "We knew that when we said goodbye to the 'Reconnaissance Dalek', when it was jettisoned out of the Tardis doors into a supernova at the end of 'Resolution', that that would not be the end of it..."

It’s Doctor Who Day – the 57th birthday of the sci-fi institution – and the BBC have marked the special occasion by revealing new details on the upcoming holiday special. We already knew that “Revolution of the Daleks” was bringing back the Time Lord’s pepperpot nemeses – it’s kind of in the title – but today we learned that John Barrowman is also returning as Captain Jack Harkness.
This revelation came via our first clip from the episode (see above), which features the immortal Time Agent reacting to the sound of the Tardis materializing. Though we’re still waiting on a full trailer and an actual release date, the BBC has treated us to the first poster for the special, which teases Jack and the “fam” – the Doctor’s friends, Yaz (Mandip Gill), Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Ryan (Tosin Cole) – versus the Daleks. Meanwhile, the Doctor herself (Jodie Whittaker) is stuck in space prison.

Nile Rodgers still remembers the first time he heard what would become his favorite album of all time: John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. The guitarist grew up in what he describes as a “jazz household” in New York’s Greenwich Village, and one day, his stepfather came home with the deeply spiritual 1965 suite, which is now considered the saxophonist’s defining work. While playing the album start to finish, Rodgers says he had an epiphany.

Directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson have been making creative leaps in independent film for years now. From their debut, the two-man show “Resolution,” critics have been stoking the flames of their work, though the audiences have remained cult-like in their following, even with big names such as director Guillermo del Toro singing their praises. With their latest, most ambitious film to date, “Synchronic,” they’re further announcing themselves in the film world with impressive and disturbing set pieces and big-name talent in front of the screen with Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan.

Netflix is an ever-changing, constantly growing treasure trove of hidden gems and secret delights (here’s everything new on Netflix UK this month). Sometimes, a teeny bit too secret though.
Who hasn’t sat down to watch a horror movie and found themselves scrolling endlessly, either not being able to find something they’re in the mood for, or not really knowing what half the titles are, or if they’re any good?
We’ve scoured the full current catalogue available to watch in the UK now and picked out the best scary movies. It’s a mix of classic and new, and a range of slashers, horror-coms, mumblegore, monster movies and more to hopefully scratch that itch with ease.
We’ll keep this updated as and when titles drop in and out of the service.

"I want to know... that there's meaning in the things I do." Well Go USA has released the full-length official trailer for Synchronic, the fascinating new sci-fi thriller from acclaimed filmmaking duo Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead. This premiered at TIFF last year, and also played at the Sitges and London Film Festivals, plus Fantastic Fest and a few others. Two New Orleans paramedics' lives are ripped apart after they encounter a series of deaths linked to a designer drug with bizarre, otherworldly effects. It's a refreshing new take on time travel, involving a technique that we've never seen before. Of course Benson & Moorhead are always innovating even in low key ways. The film stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan, with Katie Aselton, Ally Ioannides, Natasha Tina Liu, Martin Bats Bradford. I saw this last year and loved it, writing that it's "a worthy new addition to the time travel sci-fi subgenre.

Doctor Who fans are still patiently waiting for this year’s special episode which will air during the festive season and bring back the Daleks to presumably wreak havoc on the world and ruin the Doctor’s day.
The sci-fi show chronicling the adventures of the Last of the Time Lords went out with a bang this year by revealing the true identity of the Timeless Child. Now that the Thirteenth knows she’s not originally from Gallifrey, it’s safe to assume that the next season will delve into her identity and forgotten past lives. But before that, Chris Chibnall will address the finale’s cliffhanger ending which saw a platoon of the Judoon teleport the Doctor to an intergalactic prison. This year’s special episode, “Revolution of the Daleks,” will feature the return of Graham, Ryan, and Yaz, and as the name suggests, revolve around the titular character’s oldest enemies.

There are some science fiction designs you mess with at your peril. Disney’s Star Wars Sequel Trilogy left the X-Wings as they were in the Original Trilogy and the basic shape of the USS Enterprise has remained the same since the 1960s. Even Doctor Who, which effectively reboots itself every few years, keeps a few things the same. Notably, the now-anachronistic blue police box Tardis. But it seems that the BBC are starting to fiddle with the other major iconic design: the Daleks.
The fascist alien pepper-pots have been the Doctor’s most iconic enemy ever since they debuted in 1963’s “The Daleks,” and they’re due to appear next in this year’s Christmas special, appropriately titled “Revolution of the Daleks.” Filming took place back in October 2019 and the plot seems to cover a schism in the Dalek Empire, indicated by shots from the set that appeared to...

Series 13 may be a long way off yet (an educated guess would place its arrival in late 2021), but Doctor Who will return sooner than that. As teased at the very end of the series 12 finale, “The Timeless Children,” the next episode will be a one-off special due to air this Christmas or New Year 2021.
Entitled “Revolution of the Daleks,” the extended episode will see the Doctor once again go up against the mutant abominations. The race of foes last appeared in New Year’s Day 2019 special “Resolution,” which featured guest star Charlotte Ritchie possessed by a Dalek that wreaked havoc in the city of Sheffield before it was sucked into a vacuum corridor in space.
Previous to that, the Daleks also featured in Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat’s goodbye episode “Twice Upon a Time,” the last in the new series’ run of regular Christmas specials. Will either of those...

“Doctor Who” Series 12 ended with the Doctor in a very bad spot. But it’s about to get even worse, because showrunner Chris Chibnall has announced that when “Doctor Who” returns in December for its holiday special, it will be time for Jodie Whitaker to face off against the Doctor’s most hated nemesis: the Daleks.

Aaron Loeb’s darkly comic one-act play “Ideation” will be turned into a movie, Variety has learned.
The Off-Broadway production centers on a group of corporate consultants who work together on a mysterious and ethically ambiguous project for the government. It premiered in 2016, and went on to become a New York Times Critic’s Pick during its run at 59E59 Theaters.
“In ‘Ideation,’ Mr. Loeb has devised a psychological game, one that’s both amusing and intriguing to play,” the Times review read.
The film will be directed by James Ward Byrkit, who previously helmed and wrote “Coherence” and also penned the script for “Rango.” It will be backed by Rustic Films and Bellanova Films.
Loeb is the recipient of the Will Glickman playwriting award. His plays include “Brown,” “First Person Shooter,” and “Abraham Lincoln’s Big, Gay Dance Party,” which had its Off-Broadway premiere in 2010. In addition to being a playwright,...

While Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall is usually cryptic about plot developments in his run, he’s recently shared a lot of details about the upcoming two-part finale to season 12.
Granted, we’ve known for a while that the second season of Jodie Whittaker would feature the return of Cybermen, but we didn’t know exactly when to expect them to be back. Well, it seems that Chibnall is following the age-old tradition of modern Who by concluding this season with a two-part story that’ll feature the Cybermen as the main threat.
Previously, fans witnessed the surprise return of Captain Jack Harkness after more than 10 years, but the character didn’t simply reappear for the sake of shocking viewers, as he had an important message for the Doctor. Doctor Who is finally set to return in the new year for its twelfth season, after fans have been starved for new travels in the Tardis since the winter special titled “Resolution” aired back in January. As you’d hope, then, showrunner Chris Chibnall is promising that the wait will have been worth it, with season 12 described as “different” from 2018’s season 11 and “probably a step up.”

It’s Doctor Who Day and the BBC decided to celebrate by dropping the first teaser trailer for the upcoming twelfth season of the sci-fi institution. Understandably, fans are going crazy over it on social media, with one scene, in particular, getting a lot of attention. Yes, I’m talking about the moment when the Thirteenth Doctor wears a suit. Wait, no, the moment in question is the reveal that the Cybermen will return, and that they’ll be getting a bit of an upgrade when they do.
At the 0:34 mark, we get two brief shots which confirm the Time Lord’s old enemies will be back in season 12 with a new look. The first sees one of the metal men emerging from what looks to be the smoke of an explosion. Due to the unfocused nature of the shot, it’s hard to make out the details of the costume.
