Blockbusters arrive earlier every year, and now the MTV Movie Awards will, too. MTV announced Tuesday that its annual movie awards will be broadcast live on Sunday, April 14, nearly two months earlier than usual. The awards have traditionally aired on the first Sunday after Memorial Day. The show is less known for its irreverent awards than for its comedy sketches and publicity stunts promoting the big summer releases. The MTV Movie Awards is classing up its act. For the venerable celebration of Hollywood’s 21st edition in June, multiple awards categories have been dropped, a few others added, and the network has installed an “academy” of actors, producers, agents and other industry insiders to vote on nominees, including a “breakthrough performance” award voted on by directors.
