Exclusive: SpongeBob SquarePants voice actor Mr. Lawrence is writing and directing a comedy-horror toon billed as “The Office meets Frankenstein.”
Mr. Lawrence (real name Douglas Osowski) is working with Canadian Copernicus Studios on Death Castle, which is currently being developed as a six-minute short that will act as the pilot for a full adult animation series. The actor is best known for his work on Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob, having written scripts, animated scenes and voiced several characters including Plankton, Potty the Parrot and Larry the Lobster.
He will be writer and director on Death Castle, which is being positioned as “a satire of scary monster movies paired with a screwball relationship comedy.” Further plot details are under wraps for now.
The plan is for a “high-end traditional 2D animation style with distinctive visual appeal,” with several international animation industry experts attached. Emmy winner Craig Kellman, whose credits include Penguins of Madagascar...

Malkovich has brought his uniquely off-kilter acting style to bear in a prolific career spanning costume drama (like 1988’s “Dangerous Liasons”), studio thrillers (1993’s “In the Line of Fire”), cutting edge indies (1999’s “Being John Malkovich”), wackadoo sci-fi comedies (2005’s “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) and animated family films (2014’s “Penguins of Madagascar”). Most recently, he has appeared in the Apple TV+ series “The New Look” and the Netflix series “Ripley.”

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.
Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:
The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. The murder of teenager Hae Min Lee was the focal point of a “Serial” podcast, which questioned if boyfriend Syed was her killer. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.
Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.
The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.
Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.
We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

Disney/20th Century Studios dropped the latest trailer Thursday for “Ron’s Gone Wrong” (October 22 in theaters), which centers on the friendship between the titular malfunctioning robot (voiced by Zach Galifianakis) and socially awkward middle-schooler Barney (voiced by Jack Dylan Graze). It marks the first animated feature from UK-based Locksmith Animation, directed by co-founder Sarah Smith (“Arthur Christmas”) and former Pixar story artist Jean-Philippe Vine (“Cars 3”). Peter Baynham (the “Borat” movies and “Arthur Christmas”) and Smith co-wrote the script with an emphasis on tech frustration and unhealthy dependence on social media.
“Coco” story artist Octavio Rodriguez served as co-director, Julie Lockhart (co-founder and president of Locksmith) produced with Lara Breay (“Penguins of Madagascar”), VFX studio Dneg (“Dune”) made its first animated feature, and the voice cast also includes Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Ed Helms (“The Office”), Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Rob Delaney (“Deadpool 2“), Kylie Cantrall (“Gabby Duran...

There may not be a more iconic opening in the modern animation landscape than that of SpongeBob SquarePants. Only one cartoon jingle is bold enough to ask questions like “who lives in a Pineapple under the sea?” and demand to know if “nautical nonsense be something you wish.”
The show open for SpongeBob SquarePants’ second spinoff, The Patrick Star Show, has a lot to live up to then. It’s unlikely to be as infamous and influential as its forefather’s opening (because what could be?) but that doesn’t mean it can’t have some fun on its own. Thankfully, we’re happy to report that the intro for The Patrick Star Show is quite fun! And don’t just take our word for it, because thanks to the kind folks at Nickelodeon, we can exclusively reveal it right now. Take a look below:

This week offered little new on VOD. Did anticipation of “The Little Things” debuting on HBO Max as well as in theaters make others avoid the week? It left room for two titles to continue flying high with “Tenet” at $5.99, and “News of the World” at $19.99. Like last week, each placed #1 on two of the four charts we track.
Ongoing interest in Christopher Nolan’s film may seem ironic as it was the last major Warners release to see a traditional rollout. The studio reportedly recoups 70 percent of VOD rental; if there were 1 million rentals in a week, at the current price of $5.99, it would generate nearly $4.2 million. That would justify delaying a move to HBO Max.
As a PVOD, Universal sees a more generous revenue share of 80 percent on “News of the World” rentals. For a $4 million return — a nice bounty for a film with a reported $38 million budget...

Following a long theatrical run and a month at $19.99, “Tenet” is now thriving at $5.99 and holds the top spot at all three lists that rank by purchases. At FandangoNow, which ranks by revenue, it is #6, the highest among standard-price entries. Best of all for Warner Bros., its normal share of a VOD release is around 70 percent. That compares to the 63 percent it demanded from theaters.
“Tenet” held off two significant new PVOD entries from Universal and Focus, “News of the World” and “Promising Young Woman.” Paul Greengrass’ Tom Hanks western led Apple TV for three days and placed second to “Tenet” at Google Play over the weekend. This comes as Universal’s “The Croods: A New Age” continues its strong presence at $19.99. “News” is #1 at FandangoNow, with “Promising” at #3 on their PVOD-dominated list.

Daisy Ridley and Jennifer Hudson’s avatars stood on stage before a captive audience. “I’ve been holed up for a year, so this is like the first party I’ve been to and it’s just great,” said Ridley, as her animated self smiled and looked out at the room. “I’m in awe,” Hudson added.

Netflix is adding a total of 18 new movies and TV series to its library over the next seven days. While that’s not the biggest haul of fresh additions ever, especially after everything that dropped on the platform during the first week of January, it still contains a bunch of must-see titles, including both original content and newly licensed films, that you’ll want to check out.
Monday kicks things off with hard-hitting documentary Crack and French comedy-drama The Intouchables. On Tuesday, meanwhile, the fourth season of British series Last Tango in Halifax debuts. Wednesday then delivers a couple of titles for crime enthusiasts – 2017 thriller An Imperfect Murder (also known as The Private Life of a Modern Woman) starring Sienna Miller and Alec Baldwin and documentary Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Anyone who doesn’t have their curiosity immediately piqued by the idea of Hollywood’s most manic and memeable actor fronting a show where the episodes are titled “F*ck...

Multitalented creator Carl Reiner has died at the age of 98. The news was confirmed by Reiner’s assistant, who told Variety that the actor, comedian, and director died of natural causes at his home in Beverly Hills on Monday, June 29. Reiner was a jack-of-all-trades who dabbled in practically every element of Hollywood, from publishing to comedy, showrunning, and screenwriting.
Carl Reiner was born in the Bronx on March 20, 1922. His parents were Jewish immigrants. His father, a watchmaker named Irving, was born in Austria while mother, Bessie, was Romanian. It was Reiner’s older brother Charlie who inspired Carl to go into acting after the older Reiner learned about a free dramatic workshop, but unfortunately, Charlie Reiner would die in WWII. In 1943 Carl Reiner was drafted into the Army Air Force; he’d serve throughout the war but maintained close ties to the world of acting by performing in shows around...

As the veteran German director releases his latest underwhelming film, it feels as if he’s spreading himself too thin
It used to be that a new movie by Werner Herzog was an anticipated event; these days it’s more of an “Oh, another one”. Herzog sure seems to be churning them out. His latest, Family Romance, LLC, is his sixth feature in four years. Pretty impressive for a 77-year-old, but as well as the worry that he is spreading himself too thinly, is there a danger that Herzog is becoming a brand?
It is almost sacrilege to suggest such a thing. The German director is a living legend, and one of the most admired, adventurous film-makers ever, but there is a feeling that Herzog the personality is beginning to overshadow Herzog the film-maker. Partly this is a result of high-profile acting gigs in Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian and Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher.

Topher Grace is eyeing his return to network TV.
The “That 70s Show” star has been cast to play one of three brothers in “Home Economics,” a single-camera comedy pilot at ABC which hails from Lionsgate and ABC Studios. If the project goes to series, it would mark Grace’s first regular role on broadcast TV since “That 70s Show.”
“Home Economics” centers around three adult siblings: one in the one percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on.
Grace will play Tom, the middle sibling both in age and economic status. The character is described as an intellectual, a novelist who’s had a couple books that sold decently, but his last one did not. He strives to be where his brother is financially, but fears he’ll slip down to his sister’s level. He’s in a creative field, so his income fluctuates. That wasn’t such...

ABC has given a pilot order to Home Economics, a single-camera family comedy from writers Michael Colton and John Aboud (Penguins Of Madagascar), Lionsgate TV and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum’s studio-based Tannenbaum Company.
Written by Colton and Aboud, Home Economics is about three adult siblings: one in the 1 percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on.
The project, inspired by Colton’s family, was originally set up at Fox last development season with a script commitment plus penalty. ABC bought the comedy on spec, with ABC Studios coming on board to co-produce alongside Lionsgate. (Fox Entertainment likely retains a small piece.) Colton and Aboud executive produce with Kim and Eric Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company, whose Jason Wang is co-executive producer. Lionsgate Television’s Maxfield Elins will oversee the series on behalf of the studio.
At ABC, Home Economics joins single-camera comedy pilots Work Wife and Prospect and multi-camera My Village.

The third “Walking Dead” series officially unveiled its main cast immediately after the flagship show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.
In addition to Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, and Hal Cumpston — whose castings were exclusively reported by Variety earlier in July, the new series has also cast Annet Mahendru and Aliyah Royale in two lead roles. Mahendru’s character is named Huck, while Royale’s character is named Iris.
The new series is said to follow two female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the zombie apocalypse.

We understand that John Lasseter, Head of Animation, made the announcement in an informal staff meeting, that both he and Skydance boss David Ellison made the appointment. Edwards replaces Bill Damaschke, who previously held the title. We also hear he is departing the studio.
Edwards will serve as Lasseter’s right-hand, leading all business aspects of production activities across all titles. She has been with the Skydance team since the beginning, helping to build the department and will provide continuity as Lasseter builds the creative side of the business.
