Warning: Spoilers
Aztec mummy of Lord Tezcalipoca is discovered in the desert by some Monroe University students. One of them gets the idea to revive its spirit which enters people and turns them into ravenous zombie-like people.

I was not enjoying the film and then toward the end I started thinking "so bad it is good" and "camp." There were scenes that were simply awful. We had a man perform a ceremony while wearing one white sock, a skirt, and a wife-beater shirt. At another time they are playing sad violin music while a woman is puking up green slime and her severed head is attempting to bite someone. Another man gets his arm cut off below the elbow, we then see him shortly later standing upright, acting normal missing his arm at the shoulder where it is bandaged with duct tape. A sacrifice is cut in the lower abdomen, about where the appendix would be and they pull out his beating heart.

I think this film can be enjoyed on the "so bad it is good" level. I just realized it too late.

Guide: F-word, sex, nudity (Erin Condry, Esther Canata + uncredited dancer)

I guess boredom killed the mummy...
paul_haakonsen18 May 2019
Right, well when I sat down to watch "American Mummy", I wasn't really expecting much given the title of the movie. But come on, at least give the audience a proper mummy.

This movie was bad, and the mummy was a mere backdrop around which this train wreck of a movie circled. Sure, the mummy was there, but it was hardly a real part of the story, much less was it the antagonist of the movie. It was simply just there.

I managed to endure through "American Mummy", but believe you me when I tell you that I wasn't particularly entertained by what transpired on the screen. So why finish watching it to the end? Well, because I was hoping that the movie would eventually pick up pace and become interesting. I just never happened.

The characters in the movie were mundane, and it should be said that the actors and actresses in the movie had very little to work with, and it reflected poorly on their performances.

"American Mummy" was a massive disappointment, especially because I was expecting something in the likes of a good old fashioned reanimated mummy coming to life type of movie. That was just not the case in "American Mummy".

Do yourself a favor, and stay well clear of this 2014 movie, because it quite frankly isn't worth the time, money or effort.

Aztec Blood
Uriah4322 February 2022
This film begins with a man by the name of "Philip" (Jack Grimmett) and two women "Carmen" (Esther Canata) and "Becca" (Jennifer June Ross) looking for an Aztec burial site in the desert of New Mexico. By chance, Philip sees an opening on the side of a hill and upon further investigation is brutally killed in the process. Hearing his screams, Becca runs to the cave and sees Philip's body lying next to what appears to be an ancient Aztec sarcophagus. The scene then shifts to 12 weeks later with both Carmen and Becca being joined by a research team led by "Professor Jensen" (Suziey Block) from Monroe University to study this mysterious object. What Professor Jensen doesn't realize, however, is that Carmen has advanced knowledge of what lies within the sarcophagus and is intent upon resurrecting it regardless of the price it will later demand. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this film started off reasonably well but after the first 20 minutes or so the lack of resources began to show and things went downhill rather quickly after that. Some scenes-especially those featuring "Jose" (Rudy Marquez) dancing around in cheap Aztec garb-were extremely amateurish. Likewise, the ending was equally ridiculous as well. That being said, I don't consider this to be a good movie by any means and I have rated it accordingly.

Gruesome Evil Dead copy
Leofwine_draca11 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
American Mummy is a low budget indie horror film about a bunch of archaeologist students who discover an Aztec mummy residing inside a cave system in the desert. However, said mummy is possessed by the 'lord of the dead', a demonic entity that begins to possess each of the students in turn. After the initial set up it soon transpires that this is a straight forward EVIL DEAD copy featuring scenes of gruesome murder and dismemberment and demon-possessed victims hungry for living prey. It's a grisly story indeed, shockingly so in places, and fast paced with it. Despite the multiple shortcomings, this is much better than I was expecting it to be.

Bad, Really Bad
leachjeff9 May 2017
Even fast forwarding at 4x, this moving is really bad and I have seen a lot of crappy horror movies. The acting is terrible, there isn't enough naked to distract you and there is no script to speak of. The only saving grace is characters get killed fairly quickly so you don't have to suffer through their bad acting all that long.

Warning: Spoilers
To start with the story-line was weak, no real explanation as to who the Aztec (Not American)Mummy was or maybe it did and i fell asleep for a few minutes. A shawl wrapped around a mannequin wearing a blue mask, with large eyes and teeth does not qualify as a Mummy, getting back to the acting, did they have a script? the actors were unlikable you really didn't care if they lived or died and like most badly done movies it relied on gore, each member of the group seemly getting possessed by the blue mannequin with the big eyes and turning them into cannibalistic ghouls . The music was quit annoying too this is not a good movie in-fact its one of the worse I've seen in a long time, on that point i would not recommend this movie.

Just the worst
optimuscrimek22 October 2017
Want a mummy movie with literally nothing to do with the mummy, then this is the movie for you! the film moves at a tediously slow pace and the video and sound quality feel like a documentary, one that happened to be filmed on a budget of next to nothing. The acting is terrible, the script is terrible and the sound effects are laughably bad and at time I had to wonder if this was a horror comedy.

The one saving grace is that the special effects involving the gore and zombie violence (Yes, there is more things to do with zombies than mummies)is pretty good.

Halfway decent low-budget mummy effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder16 June 2017
Heading into the desert, a university research team heads out to investigate the findings of an Aztec idol nearby come to find they have unleashed the murderous spirit of an ancient warrior who is killing off the team one-by-one and must find a way to stop the deadly rampage.

For the most part, this one wasn't all that bad but still had enough going for it. Among the more enjoyable aspects here is the fact that there's some decent enough work here at building the world away from the typical Egyptian variety. The move to the American Southwest offers a slightly more original take here where it's a more recent vintage that still performed somewhat similar enough actions to make a mummy appearing there plausible. Tying that into the original idea of the blood sacrifice sequence in the caves which features some strong and startling attempts to raise the creature inside which starts this one in earnest, the fact that it utilizes some rather familiar concepts of Aztec lore into the creatures' rebirth and actual reappearance is quite an intriguing move here. As well, once this one gets going in the second half with the possessed going on all sorts of great rampages the action is quite fun and makes this a little more engaging, with the discovery of the dead colleague moving around the camp, the brawl with the second victim crawling around without a lower body, the ceremonial offerings in the cave system or the final battle with the possessed followers inside the camp which all makes this one seem far more engaging than it really is by bringing in some solid action and plenty of gore to help liven this one up. This is what helps make for a fun time here. However, while it does have some solid positives the flaws here are far more detrimental. Hardly anything is more damaging here than the rather low-budget throughout here, which is quite obvious and really does this one a disservice. The fact that it doesn't have the budget to bring out an actual mummy is a big issue, rarely featuring anything about the actual creature coming back shuffling around killing people and being more about the return of the curse driven by the creature and it rarely provides much to discount that feeling. Everything looks too closed in and confining which is typical of the style as well as the slow, drawn-out pacing here that really lowers the first half really tend to lower this one.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Language, Nudity and mild drug use.

Impressively awful
daleyschool12 August 2018
My mom and I like to watch cheesy horror movies together. American Mummy passes cheesy and goes into bizarrely bad. Every choice made is bad, the mummy never shows up, and the acting is awful. As a side note, I'd say this is more of a zombie movie than a mummy movie, but at this par of movies does it really even matter?

If you enjoy the technical aspects of movie-making, watch it with friends and have a fun afternoon tearing apart a movie that is truly an accomplishment in poor film making.

Don't waste your time
williamvlucasjr25 May 2017
This is the worst movie I have ever seen. I dosed off 4 times within the first 30 minutes. Everything sucked in this movie, the acting, the story-line, the direction, the editing and even the 3D sucked.

1) Story-line = terrible 0/5 (very difficult to follow the story, continued to jump around not leading into the next screen)

2) Acting = terrible 0/5 (a Russian professor with the worst Russian accent ever just to name one)

3) Video = extremely bad (many of the shots were not considered for 3D presentation

4) 3D = sub-par (lots of ghosting over an high-send Sony active 3D display)

5) Audio = 1/5 (nothing to write home to mom about)

6) Flow of events = 0/5 (worst ever)

7) Editing = 0/5 (wonder if the editor graduated from high school)

8) Direction = 0/5 (director should be banished from the studio lots and forbidden to make any further movies, including documentaries.

Do yourself a favorite. Won't waste your valuable time on this crud.

Worst movie ever!
janinelane25 January 2022
Oh, my! Where do I start? This movie reminded me of a bunch of middle schoolers trying to make a movie. The acting was horrible. There was so much unnecessary nudity, but not enough to make up for the poor visual effects, lack of talented actors, or ridiculous plotline. It was a total waste of time.

Yep, it's bad
jenny-7252611 June 2023
It's cheesy bad. Everyone once in a while my friends and I get together for a night of marathon cheesy bad movies and this one made the cut. Do not expect a great script or even decent acting. However, there is plenty of gore and it's a classic for perpetual bad decisions. If you are looking for something that'll make you jump when you least expect it, this one can deliver at a couple of spots. There are some attempts at comedy. I found myself wondering if they had fun making this movie or did they expect it to become a cult classic that would eventually launch them into convention fame? I doubt if we'll watch it again at a later date. This has the feel of a one-time viewing experience.
