Before I go any further, I’ll need to clarify my criteria for judging a wrestling match unwatchable. The word ‘unwatchable’ is a moveable feast: one man’s dinner is another man’s diarrhoea, after all.
So we’re not just talking about nonsense that doesn’t really get started, like Jeff Hardy’s debacle at Tna Victory Road in 2011. We’re not discussing screwjob finishes like Montreal, or the longer Iron Man style matches that turn so many modern wrestling fans off – and if that’s the case, then clearly we’re not going over any of the old school or retro wrestling bouts of yesteryear.
They may have operated under a radically different aesthetic to today’s classics, but that doesn’t make them unwatchable.
Neither am I prepared to curate a long list of mainstream women’s matches over the last couple of decades, where WCW,...

Worked-shoots are an incredibly risky concept. Occasionally, if handled with care, they can inject a genuine sense of believability and tension into an otherwise bog-standard angle. Jerry Lawler’s legendary feud with Andy Kaufman blurred the lines between reality and kayfabe by convincingly involving a mainstream celebrity, while the ‘Summer of Punk’ storyline built upon real backstage grievances and proved that worked shoots could still work in the internet age.
However, with wrestling scrutinised and criticised in the same manner as any other scripted television show these days, worked shoots tend to fail more often than they succeed – often with horrendous consequences. Fans and reporters are now quick to doubt the legitimacy of a supposed shoot, meaning that even incidents such as Jeff Hardy’s infamously drugged-up showing at Victory Road 2011 are treated with great suspicion.
The reason for such mistrust is simple: most wrestling promotions have never...

Jeff Hardy is one of the most popular wrestlers in WWE history even though he hasn’t worked for the company in over five years. He signed his first deal as a full timer when was only 20 years old although he had matches in WWE for several years prior to that.
Hardy went on to become one of the most decorated champions in WWE history. Along with his older brother Matt, he made his mark as part of the Hardy Boys tag team and then he found success on his own.
Here’s a look at all the titles he won while in WWE: WWE Title, World Title, WWE Tag Team Titles, WCW Tag Team Titles, Intercontinental Title, European Title and Light Heavyweight Title. That’s eight different titles. There are very few wrestlers that can say they’ve won that many. It just shows how successful he was and...

Tna’s future may be uncertain, but their stars are still making the media rounds to promote this week’s Destination X special on Spike. Recently, Jeff Hardy spoke with Alternative Nation regarding Tna/Spike negotiations, retirement, as well as a possible return to the WWE.
With the news that Tna and Spike TV’s relationship possibly reaching an end, Hardy said, “I don’t know, I’m not a social network guy, I don’t even read timelines or tweets. Gosh, I hope 1 or 2 years from now we’re still coming on every Thursday night on Spike. I don’t know, I go to the shows, I do the best I can in the ring. As far as re-signing with Spike, I don’t know what’s going to happen. I hope we remain.”
Hardy also spoke to Between The Ropes about his controversial situation at Tna...

October 27th 2009 was a day that I imagine very few people saw coming. This was the day that Tna Wrestling, a company that has long been a very distant number two wrestling promotion who are very much in the background compared to the monolith that is WWE – announced they had signed The biggest professional wrestler in the business, Hulk Hogan.
Now of course Hogan was way beyond actually wrestling anything aside from maybe a very rare match with very few bumps taken, but his presence clearly would attract a whole new audience to the Tna product wouldn’t it? See Tna had been trying to raise awareness for their product for many years. Usually they seemed to try and accomplish this by trying to attract former WWE wrestlers and hoping they would help them get over the 1.0 ratings hump that they’d been stuck with seemingly forever. They tried with Christian,...

This week, we had to get the fallout from Bobby Roode threatening the health of Dixie Carter after beating Sting at Victory Road. If only she’d used the ample time she had to get out of the ring to her advantage. And so Dixie joined us to open the show. Dixie made out like she was going to fire the champ, but Sting came out and claimed firing him was letting him off easy. Sting then said that his position as leader was just not working. So he said hes coming back as a wrestler to fight for Dixie and step down as General Manager. He did however promise that he had someone to take the company right to the top. Sting asked Dixie to let him give him the power to the Real Hulk Hogan. Dixie did her best to act conflicted. Later on in the show, in the main event slot,...

Tna have gone off the Twitter deep end. Last night’s Victory Road event was a near 3-hour advert for Social Networking. The usual trending topics flashed up on screen, but it didn’t end there. We had a Victory Road hash tag banner, Tweets displayed on the screen backstage that Jeremy Borash asked questions from, a tweet during a competitive match (by Austin Aries) and to top it all off, the commentators did Not Stop talking about it all night. They completely ignored the flow of the match and the calling of moves to instead read out generic tweets from @Velvetskysknockers or whomever they could find that had something positive to say about their show. I shouldn’t be mentioning Twitter first Ever in a wrestling review, but it really was That overpowering. It was enough to make me want to mute my TV, and I haven’t done...

The “Insane Icon,” is “Done.”
The most hyped story this week was Sting saying On Twitter that he was “Done.” Not via Tna TV or anything, Via Twitter. Because that’s how professionals deal with major announcements these days. Robert Roode announced early in the show that Sting was going to appear. Thing is that since they announced Roode’s title match against Storm was going to be at the PPV in April rather than the next one in March, they made it a bit obvious that something was going to go down at Victory Road in March. Otherwise why wouldn’t the title match just happen at Victory Road?
In the closing segment Sting came out as promised to address the Tweet that shook the world. Roode made his second appearance of the night to interrupt. Sting immediately converted over to Whacky Insane Icon Sting...

Earlier this week, WWE issued a 60-day suspension to Evan Bourne for a violation of its Talent Wellness Program, which is a nice way of saying that the guy failed a drug test. This isn't a new thing for Bourne, as he was booted off of television for a month this past November for his first violation, which was later revealed to be related to the smoking of synthetic cannabis, which is a nice way of saying "fake weed.

It’s the go home show before Bound For Glory which means its their last time to sell the show! And in an interview this week Hulk Hogan completely buried Robert Roode as a credible main eventer by saying he doesn’t think hes the guy, and that Angle should “Carry” him to a good match nonetheless. Way to bury your own main event Hulk.
Speaking of the main event, Kurt Angle, the defending champion is first out tonight and calls out his challenger Robert Roode right away. “Next World Champ” chant. Kurt says he booked the matches the past few weeks to try and break him down. Angle congratulates him for winning them, but reminds him he’s the greatest wrestler ever and he’ll prove it at Bfg. Then he extends a hand. Roode decides not to shake though and takes a mic. Roode...

So sue me, I'm a wrestling fan. I first got into what WWE head cheese Vince McMahon prefers to call 'sports entertainment' these days way back in the early 1990s, in the era of (then) established stars like Hulk Hogan, Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake, 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper, 'Million Dollar Man' Ted Dibiase, Mr Perfect, Big Bossman and a colourful, gravel throated character known as the 'Macho Man, aka Mr Randy Savage.
Born Randall Mario Poffo in 1952, Savage was a supernova among stars in the WWF roster, a character so much larger than life that even the red and yellow machismo machine that was Hulk Hogan struggled to match him in the charisma stakes.
Coming from athletic stock (his father Angelo Poffo, a well known wrestler in his own right in the 1950s and 60s who at one point held the World Sit Up record), Savage initially aspired to be a baseball player,...
