For the past two Mays, Hollywood’s studio lots have remained quiet during the week they should be buzzing with the world’s top international acquisitions execs, excitedly chomping down on In-n-Out burgers and squeezing into grand theater halls at the annual LA Screenings.
Normal service will be resumed next week, as in-person screenings return for the first time since 2019 following the (seeming) end of the worst of the Covid pandemic. Execs are closing down their Zoom apps and instead eyeing up lunches in the sun and the programs that have most caught their eye during pilot season. As one UK buyer says: “It’s not quite as fun chatting over a cheese sandwich at home than fine dining in Los Angeles.”
But it’s hardly a secret that the LA Screenings aren’t exactly what they once were to the international TV community, with many shows taken off the...

Today, Fox announced numerous new and returning shows that viewers will see during the upcoming 2022-23 television season. Networks typically release their fall schedules during the upfronts but Fox did not do that this time around, likely because negotiations are still underway regarding the futures of two of the network's established drama series -- The Resident and 9-1-1, Fox's highest-rated show.
Though we don't know when they will be airing, we do know that 9-1-1: Lone Star, Bob's Burgers, Call Me Kat, The Cleaning Lady, Crime Scene Kitchen, Family Guy, The Great North, Hell's Kitchen, Housebroken, The Masked Singer, The Simpsons, and Welcome to Flatch will all be back for 2022-23. Fantasy Island and Lego Masters had been scheduled to return this summer but they will now air at some point during the regular season.

Fox has unveiled its content slate for the 2022-2013 television season, adding three new dramas, two new animated comedies, and one new unscripted series to its lineup. The announcement came during the annual Upfront event on Monday, where Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier presented a panel to the national advertising community. “Advertisers have been our focus since the start of this company, and we’re proud that this too is proof of Fox’s differentiation,” said Collier. One of the new series presented during the panel included Monarch, the country music family drama starring Susan Sarandon, Trace Adkins, and Anna Friel. The show was originally set to be part of the network’s midseason schedule, with a two-night premiere set for Sunday, January 30; however, it was later pushed back to Fall 2022. Joining Monarch is missing persons drama Alert, from executive producers Jamie Foxx and John Eisendrath (The Blacklist), and crime anthology series Accused,...

Holy bubble show cliffhanger: Just hours before its upfront presentation, Fox is leaving the fate of three bubble shows up in the air.
The network early Monday formally renewed 9-1-1: Lone Star, Call Me Kat, Welcome to Flatch, Crime Scene Kitchen and The Masked Singer for the 2022-23 TV season. That leaves three series — the 9-1-1 mothership, The Resident and Duncanville — in Fox’s question-mark column.

Fox has unveiled its programming lineup for the 2022-2023 season but refrained from revealing a fall schedule hours ahead of its upfront presentation.
The lack of a concrete fall schedule for Fox comes as two of the network’s main drama series — “9-1-1” and “The Resident” — have yet to receive formal renewals for next season. Both shows are still top performers for Fox and announcements for both series are expected soon. Whether or not that will happen before Fox’s pitch to advertisers, however, remains to be seen. Per Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier, the broadcaster remains in “good faith negotiations” with 20th Television, which produces both shows.
Fox’s fall schedule is to be announced at a later date. Per Collier, the network had previously decided to take a “portfolio approach” to pitching their slate to advertisers this year.

Fox Breaks With Tradition & Does Not Announce Fall Schedule On Day Of Upfront, Unveils 2022-23 Slate
Fox this morning announced the bulk of its programming slate for the 2022-23 but not a fall schedule. As Deadline reported two weeks ago, the network had been planning not to unveil a grid in conjunction with its May 16 upfront presentation.
As broadcast networks have become a small part of media congloms’ portfolio pitch to advertisers, the fall schedules are no longer a centerpiece of their presentations and are sometimes omitted from the corporate upfronts altogether. But the broadcast networks still traditionally unveil their fall schedule the morning of their upfront presentation.
Fox will announce its fall 2022-23 lineup to advertisers and the media soon, the network confirmed during an upfront press call Monday morning. The decision was made long before Fox could not close renewal deals for its top scripted series 9-1-1 and fellow drama stalwart The Resident in time for its upfront, which would’ve created gaping holes on the fall grid.

2nd Update Sunday Pm: Last-minute efforts to close deals on 9-1-1 and The Resident renewals before Fox’s Monday upfront presentation have not been successful. I hear the two sides are not far apart on financial terms and the pacts will close in the coming days but likely not tonight. As we reported last night, 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s renewal is believed to be a done deal. 9-1-1 has been Fox’s top scripted series for several years.
Update Saturday Pm: Forty-one hours before Fox is to present its 2022-23 slate to advertisers in New York, the network still does not have its top drama series, 9-1-1 and The Resident locked in for next season. This is a throwback to some 11th hour Two and a Half Men renewals we had years ago...

The broadcast networks have largely made their new series pickups for next season. The picks include several IP-based shows, ABC’s Rookie spinoff, Quantum Leap and The Night Court for NBC, True Lies for CBS, Supernatural spinoff The Winchesters, Walker: Independence and Gotham Knights. There are also a couple of starring vehicles, ABC’s drama Alaska, which had been set up originally with Hilary Swank as the lead, Max Thieriot’s CBS drama Fire Country, The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash, and NBC comedy Lopez vs. Lopez with George Lopez. Pending is Fox’s straight-to-series order to John Eisendrath’s missing person procedural drama Alert, which is expected by Monday.

Review: "The Accused" (1949) Starring Loretta Young And Robert Cummings; Kino Lorber Blu-ray Release
“Murder Or Self Defense?”
By Raymond Benson
This compelling 1949 melodrama—it can’t quite be called film noir due to a lack of many of the traits associated with that cinematic movement—would have a field day in the era of #MeToo. It was made during 1948 (released in January ’49) while the Production Code was still in effect. While it was taboo to say that the protagonist, Dr. Wilma Tuttle (Loretta Young), is “sexually assaulted” by one of her students at the college where she teaches psychology (it’s obvious that this is what occurs in front of our eyes on the screen), it’s perfectly fine for the investigating homicide detective, Lt. Dorgan (Wendell Corey), to make harassing sexual innuendos and sexist remarks about the woman he suspects of murder, not only to her face but to all the other men in the room while she’s present. But it...

Since they were given their heads, the big auteurs of modern TV have been its screenwriters. So “No Return” can be taken various ways. It’s an ITV series from Red Production Company, which has attracted huge heat producing Russell T. Davies’ “It’s a Sin” and “Years and Years.”
It’s sold by Studiocanal, Europe’s biggest film-tv production-distribution powerhouse which owns Red Production Company and is behind the “Paddington” franchise, multiple Liam Neeson hit thrillers and upcoming Western, “Django.”
In production since July, it’s billed as compelling event drama, starring BAFTA award winning actress Sheridan Smith (“Mrs Biggs”).
But it’s also the latest from Danny Brocklehurst, now one of the U.K.’s preeminent screenwriters.

Exclusive: The Last Police, an adaptation of Ben Winters’ sci-fi mystery novel The Last Policeman, has received a pilot order at Fox.
It marks the first pilot order from the network of the 2021/22 development season. Deadline noted that the project was zeroing in on a pilot order in our latest Pilot 2021 Buzz roundup.
The hour-long project, which has a slightly different title to the book, will be written, directed and exec produced by the Lone Star and Awake creator via his Chapter Eleven production banner. It forms part of Killen’s direct, exclusive, broadcast-only talent deal that he signed with the network in February 2020.
The Last Police follows a small-town police detective, who, as an asteroid races toward an apocalyptic collision with Earth, believes she’s been chosen to save humanity, while her cynical partner can’t decide what he’ll enjoy more: her delusional failure, or the end of the world itself.

The LA Screenings, the annual sales event for international TV buyers, prospered in a linear world where the only zooming was done in a rental car between studio lots in Burbank and top execs were able to enter million dollar parties riding on elephants.
This year, it’s once again virtual with global buyers tuning in on their computers without an In-n-Out Burger or Pink’s hotdog in sight.
The pandemic hasn’t just ruined the trip, where foreign execs are treated rather opulently by the distribution divisions of the major studios, but has impacted what content buyers can see and when they can see it.
The increase in straight-to-series orders, a reduction in traditional pilots and a year-round development process has meant that there is much less to screen in the days and weeks after the Upfronts. For instance, shows like CSI: Vegas and Law & Order: For the Defense...

Fox gave a particularly animated Upfronts presentation this year.

Fox has ordered the anthology series “Accused” from the minds behind “House” and “24,” the network said Friday.
Though the broadcast network has picked up the drama from executive producers Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa and David Shore just ahead of its upfront presentation next week, it is slated for the 2022-23 season – not this coming broadcast season.

Fox has given a straight-to-series order to anthology drama Accused, based on the International Emmy-winning British series. The project comes from key creative auspices behind Fox’s two biggest drama series of the last two decades, 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and House creator/executive producer David Shore. Sony Pictures TV, where Gordon & Gansa as well as Shore are under overall deals, will co-produce with Fox Entertainment.
While Accused is being picked up on the eve of Fox’s 2021-22 Upfront presentation, the series is for the 2022-23 season.
This marks the first series order for Gordon and Gansa since they launched a Sony TV-based production company in 2019 with former CBS Entertainment chief Glenn Geller as President. It comes on the heels of Shore, creator, executive producer and showrunner of Sony TV’s hit ABC drama series The Good Doctor, signing a new four-year deal with the studio.

Fox has given a straight-to-series orders to a drama series that hails from David Shore, Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, Variety has learned.
The series, titled “Accused,” is based on the BBC series of the same name that aired from 2010-2012. The Fox version is slated to debut during the 2022-2023 broadcast season.
“We take great pride in Fox’s legacy of bold risk taking and inventive storytelling,” said Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment. “Howard, Alex and David are an important part of that history and working with them on ‘Accused’ takes us back to our roots, literally.
