Joan Schuermeyer, who played The Poker Lady in "Victor James", has also had featured extra roles in big-budget films "Halloween II" and "Zombieland".
Victor James was originally a five minute short film created for entry into the 2009 ProjectDirect contest on YouTube. The original story centered around an underachieving problem solver who raided a local underground poker game at the direction of his boss. The film received praise from other contest entrants but was not selected for the contest's prize round.
Robert Craft (Victor James), Megan Hurst (Darcey Collins), and Martin Petersen (Dirk Mendelson) were all cast for the film in early 2009, some six months before filming began. Lee Armstrong (Randall Smith), Jody Vines (Calvin Moody), and Jeff Briggs (Dustin Smith) were brought on later after Thomas Cooper and James Jones, who were slated to play Randall Smith and Calvin Moody, respectively, were unable to attend shooting.
The film's final scene (Darcey reflecting on the beach) was the first footage taped for the project.
Although the film is set in Raleigh, North Carolina, Dirk's condo apartment was actually located in Little River, South Carolina. The 'poker bar' where Victor meets Randall Smith, also set in Raleigh, is located in Leland, NC just south of Wilmington.
