This Must Be a Good Show Because It Upsets People
First of all, I'm also tired of the Beth/Ballet thing. She didn't get tossed aside. If you remember, she couldn't keep up with that more talented dancer and she knew it. Perhaps her teacher was a bit shortsighted and crass, but that's the world of performance--it's cutthroat.
As for everything else. I think the reviewers aren't seeing this as a show. They are seeing it as if it were their own family and friends. There should be no "they should" or "they shouldn't." It's "they did." The writers aren't there to please you with making everything work out. Maybe Madison shouldn't have kept the kids and stayed with the new guy. But she did! That's the story line. Perhaps there will be consequences. Who knows? That's what true plotting is all about. People don't like Kate because she and Toby are having problems. There is no blame. That's the story. When people try to relate long distance, that's what sometimes happens. They both decided to go their own ways and now the chickens are coming home to roost. That's the way an extended plot goes. It doesn't mean they are portrayed as bad people--they are people who make the story interesting. I had a landlady in college who used to write nasty letters to the characters in he soap operas. It never occurred to her that they weren't real people.
