In India, the opening is on a record 6,500 screens. As with the major Bollywood films we’ve seen over the past year which have...

Nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, the Cinequest Film Festival has merged film and technology for two decades. The event was an early adopter of digital capture and exhibition as well as distribution across all platforms from the big screen to DVD to TV to the Internet to handheld devices.
The tradition continues in the festival’s 21st edition with a program that includes 3-D programming and panels, including the world premiere of the stereo version of “Plan 9 from Outer Space,” two 3-D shorts programs and seminars on the art and science of stereo filmmaking.
Meanwhile, Cinequest is screening 173 films this year from 41 countries — 75 of which are U.S., North American or world premieres. Audiences are expected to near 100,000, with more than 700 artists slated to attend.
This evening’s opening-night film is “Passione,” John Turturro’s musical love poem to the city of Naples.

Fitting in a full day of fashion, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan were side-by-side in Milan, italy on Monday (September 27).
After attending the Giorgio Armani Spring/Summer 2011 fashion show the well-dressed pair headed over to Armani restaurant for a fancy dinner to close out the evening.
Meanwhile, Aishwarya's career has been in full throttle with numerous new movies including the upcoming film "Robot".
Asked about her character, Miss Rai replied, "In one year I have got to work in four very different films. I got to do Raavan and Raavanan, Sana in Robot, Mala in Action Replayy and Shopia in Guzaarish. As an actor, it is very exciting. I haven't been part of the conventional commercial genre. So for me in that sense it is new to do a livewire character of someone who is chulbuli (bubbly) and fun through the film. Robot is an entertaining movie."

Venice -- After "I'm Still Here," the directorial debut from actor Casey Affleck, had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Monday, many were still left wondering if it was an elaborate hoax on the media and public.
"I'm Still Here," which recounts the transition of actor Joaquin Phoenix into an aspiring rapper, screened to a packed Sala Grande crowd Monday afternoon and was one of the hot topics on the Lido afterward for its graphic depictions of drinking and drug abuse. Affleck is married to former actress Summer Phoenix, Joaquin's sister.
Long before the out-of-competition film's world premiere, some had wondered whether Phoenix was staging an elaborate hoax on the media and public, including his confused, mumbling appearance on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" last year.

In 2009, it was a very disappointing for the buffs of A.R. Rahman as the maestro didn’t turn to Kollywood. But from the very beginning of 2010, it’s been the streak of bonanzas that started with ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya’. Both the versions of Telugu and Tamil were chartbusters followed by the trilingual stroke with Manirathnam’s ‘Raavanan’. And now, the ‘Endhiran’ mania has haunted the entire town.
Walk across the streets or any nook and corners of the state, you’ll find ‘Endhiran’ songs ringing over the airs. For the first time, a Tamil musical album has topped the charts of I-tunes online stores. With No.1 position in USA and No.2 in UK, A.R. Rahman has now become the most prominent figure in the World of Music.
Now, A.R. Rahman has mentioned that the additional tracks of ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya’ will be released shortly in stores.

Following an exceptional performance in Manirathnam’s ‘Raavanan’, the actor is now opting for such scripts that will be completely different. As we tend to hear it from the closer sources, it’s revealed that the actor is looking for a fast-paced commercial entertainer like Suriya starrer ‘Singam’. It seems that Boopathy Pandian has been making some alterations over the script.
Just as it was known before Vikram will be playing a cop’s role, which uses his brain rather than his muscle power. But now, the news is that the producers and actor are looking out to change the film’s title.
Somehow, the official confirmations will be made shortly as the first look will be published on all print Medias by next month.

This has kindled the controversies in Kollywood now. Even at times when most of the filmmaker don’t afford to settle the fully account of remuneration for their actors and technicians, Manirathnam stands out as a prodigious personality for his punctuality and disciplined nature. But now, the filmmaker seems to have disappointed his actor Vikram, who did a marvelous job saving ‘Raavanan’ from sinking at least.
So, what’s the buzz all about? We hear that the actor was signed for this film to be paid with a good salary of Rs. 4Crores and hasn’t settled Rs.1C now. However, Vikram has been reported about keeping quiet as he doesn’t want to go ahead. Maybe, this is a rumor, but it has to be taken into regard that Manirathnam is the greatest and genuine personality for having taken care of his technicians, artists and associates with good payment.

Analyzing the reports of box office results in the past 8 months, things have turned to be completely surprising for the buffs as the superstars have blatantly disappointed while few have really lived up to the expectations. Guess what? The films of Ajith Kumar and Vijay we anticipated to do well, flunked terribly at box office.
But it’s Vijay, who leads the failures’ list as his ‘Vettaikaran’ and 50th film ‘Sura’ was a bad flop. However, Ajith Kumar follows the list as his ‘Asal’ being produced at such a big cost was again a flop. Nothing seems to be impressive with these actors unlike Surya, whose films have been runaway successes. Followed by the grand success of ‘Aadhavan’, the film ‘Singam’ is rocking at its best in box office. Naturally, the actress should have got herself annoyed performing the same roles over and again. But guess what? Only such roles have been getting her good reviews and first it was Ameer’s ‘Paruthiveeran’ and now Manirathnam’s ‘Raavanan’.
In both the versions, she plays the role of a girl being assaulted in groups. In similarity, her culmination in ‘Paruthiveeran’ was the same and the actress is literally discombobulated with repeated acts. She is vexed about the fact that she is being addressed as in a unique way. But what to do, the actress cannot ask for the entire delineation of her role in ‘Raavanan’.
The actress has decided not to get on for such roles in mere future.

He’s badly in need of rest and nothing is going to compensate with his health. The filmmaker had a very tough time while filming his trilingual film ‘Raavanan’ and that could have been the reason letting buzzes open that it was his associate directors Azhagam Perumal and S.S. There are more mixed reviews for the films and the box office collections are proving to be good at certain standards while poor in B and C centres. Meanwhile, there is a news spreading from Manirathnam’s office that he has got 3 scripts: one Simbhu to be shot in exotic foreign locations and another one for Dhanush tentatively titled as ‘Pookada’ and the final script, a big bang action packed thriller drama.
The biggest question is that whether he will be directing this film or else just produces it for his protégés or some of the ace filmmakers.

Raavan and Raavanan, like many other Mani Ratnam films, will be forever entrenched in the history of Indian cinema. It marks new heights for all those involved and raises the bar of expectations from Indian cinema by audiences worldwide. The bilingual saga has finally reached verdict day. The good, bad and the ugly has all been said and written about both versions. However, the prevailing opinion amongst critics and audiences, who have witnessed both Raavan and its Tamil counterpart, is that the latter triumphs over the former and impresses far more. At first, it's rather mind boggling to contemplate how a bilingual film, shot simultaneously, be differentiated to such an extent as to demand two very different reviews from both audiences and critics alike. However, as you continue to read this piece the 'how' will become very much apparent.

Variously described by critics as giving a "brilliant performance", and of playing the part of Dev in Raavanan "with élan", Malayalam actor Prithviraj has found himself suddenly on the radar of Bollywood audiences, eager to compare the two language versions of the film. Doing a round of the red carpet, the actor gave his support to the cast of Raavan in London, and BollySpice was there to shoot a few quick fire questions.
How did you choose the film?
I didn't choose the film, the film chose me. I got a call from Mr. Mani Ratnam one day, and met him at his office and he narrated the story to me. He asked me if I would like to do the film, and I said I would more than love to do the film and I did it.

Director Mani Ratnam's Raavanan, the Tamil language counterpart to Raavan, is a misty, murky take on the classic story of the kidnapping Ram's wife Sita by the ten-headed demon Raavan. In this modern re-telling, Raavan becomes Veeeru (Chaiyyan Vikram) the 'king' of a small patch of jungle and all the villagers within it and for his ten heads, he has ten moods. Ram becomes police inspector Dev (Prithviraj), who has been sent to the forest district to take out Veeru and Dev's wife Raagini (Aishwarya Rai) is the Sita who is kidnapped.
Raavanan opens with the kidnapping of Raagini and follows her through her captivity, with flashbacks to previous events as she finds out the circumstances that led Veeru to her. While Raagini finds her beliefs about right and wrong being tested, her husband the police inspector is tracking her down, ready for revenge. A showdown is inevitable but in Raavanan,...

The Brand ‘Manirathnam’ doesn’t mean it’s an A-rated film and it should be credited with 5-star rating. We have been the diehard buffs of Manirathnam and have appreciated almost all his films for its unique themes. When his ‘Thalapathy’ was a modernized tale of Hindu Epic ‘Mahabharatha’, this one is a pure adaptation of ‘Ramayanam’. There are many connections that prove of such instances, which in many places look so amateurish and kiddy stuff as well. We never expected such a thing from Manirathnam.
Let’s start off relating the characters and instances marking the ‘Ramayanam’…

A.R. Rahman has now turned into a topmost globetrotter. It looks like he has been more time travelling across flights more than spending his time at recording studios. Until for past few days, the music director was busy working on the background score of ‘Raavanan’ and now he is taking a long world tour across various parts.
The music director has mentioned that travelling has made both his body and mind more tired. But work means work and it has to be done at the precise time.
Of course, that’s the mantra of our Madras Mozart, who has been withstanding any impedimenta to rock at the best.
Let’s wish he keeps striding with the same efforts bring good music to all of us…...

This time, it’s not the task of Manirathnam, but Big Pictures and Sony to ensure that the film is gonna make it big on the box office. Yeah! For the first time, Manirathnam will have no rights to be claimed over any version on any reason.
All the three versions – ‘Raavanan’, ‘Villain’ and ‘Raavan’ have been passed with U certificates and that’s an added value to attract universal audiences. It seems that the teasers of Raavan are being screened in various international satellite channels by Sony so as to pull the attraction of western audiences.
As mentioned before, the film has been sold out for Rs.350Crores and Big-Sony are so sure that they can make a collection of Rs.550Crores.
The entire team of Raavanan has been making its way across various parts of the globe attending international award ceremonies and promoting their film.

Mani Ratnam’s Raavan will be released in 24 selected theaters in Karnataka.
The president of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (Kfcc), Vasant Kumar Patil said that the film, titled Raavanan in Tamil, will have a restricted release and said that “a decision has been taken to follow the existing policy of allowing non-Kannada films in a stipulated number of theatres.”
While the decision will not be binding in the other two distribution areas, it will be implemented in old Mysore distribution area, which is the southern part of the state.
Big Cinemas is scheduled to release both versions of the film on June 18.
Big Cinemas has said that the chamber should treat Raavan as two different films, and should allow the release in 48 theatres or more.
