The summer of 2023 was encapsulated in two films at the same time: Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan and Barbie by Greta Gerwig. Since they came out the same weekend, moviegoers were treated to a sort of double feature.
These two blockbusters not only dominated the world last year, but they also reignited our collective desire for a silver-screen experience. Both films exceeded box office expectations, with Margot Robbie’s film enchanting its way to a $1.4 billion global haul, while Oppenheimer’s Oscar-winning narrative netted a whopping $951.4 million.

But Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently stirred quite the conversation with his belief that these films could have shone just as brightly on streaming platforms. One can’t help but wonder: How different would the scenario be if these cultural phenomena had debuted on Netflix rather than the cinema’s big screen?

Agbo, the Russo Brothers’ media company, has launched an innovation department, expanding its physical and virtual production capabilities under the guidance of a seasoned executive team.
Under the new setup, Agbo’s technology experts will build proprietary creative tools, with the aim of fostering production innovation and cost efficiencies. The idea is for Agbo and its creative partners to be able to access the company’s emerging set of tools at every stage of development, production, and post-production.
Innovation will have three verticals: production technology, immersive technology and creative. It will be led by Jake Aust, who was recently promoted to Agbo’s Chief Innovation Officer. Over a 20-year career, Aust has been a producer on The Office and Russo-affiliated titles like TV’s Community and feature film Cherry. He was also an executive producer on The Gray Man and most recently served as Agbo’s President of Physical Production.

Agbo is going AI — at least it sounds like it is, at least in part.
The Russo Brothers’ independent studio announced on Wednesday the formation of a new Innovation department, which will blend Agbo’s “physical and virtual production capabilities.” The studio’s technologists will “build proprietary creative tools for storytellers, fostering production innovation and cost efficiency for content across diverse platforms,” the press release reads. The tools will be used in development, production, and post-production.
When reached by IndieWire, a spokesperson for Agbo declined to clarify how much of these tools will be AI or generative-ai. The use of AI in Hollywood is considered sacrilegious by some and an efficient use of technology by others. The truth is it can be both. AI has been the primary — or at least the most public-facing — issue in contract negotiations between the guilds and the studios.

La La Land received one of the most memorable do-over moments in Hollywood history when the film was incorrectly announced as the Best Picture winner at the 2017 Academy Awards, which was actually presented to Moonlight. But the film’s leading man Ryan Gosling would rather go back and change a more crucial, aesthetic error about the movie: it’s promotional poster.
“La La Land. There is a moment that haunts me,” Gosling recently told The Wall Street Journal Magazine when asked if there were any particular roles he would want to do over.

Disney’s 2017 Beauty and the Beast live-action remake is one of the most critical and commercial hits by the House of the Mouse. The Emma Watson film holds the record of being the second-highest-grossing Disney live-action remake. However, the initial casting of the film was much different with Ryan Gosling in the role of Beast.

While the current scenario of Disney live-action remakes is not going well, Beauty and the Beast was praised for being faithful to the source material and offering a fresh retelling at the same time.

Ryan Gosling’s rise and fame came from his ability to play characters across genres and shine equally. The actor, however, is trying to limit and filter out the roles he plays. Of course, lately, Gosling has been doing lighter movies, while doing fairly great with his recent movies including claiming Oscar nominations for his roles in La La Land and Barbie, fans would want to see him in intense thrillers again.

The nature of movies does have an impact on actors. Gosling recently revealed that limiting movie roles with the inherent nature of intensity in the narrative affects not only the actor but everyone surrounding him. Gosling has been turning down psychologically twisted roles, and it will certainly upset fans, but he has a good reason behind it.

The 16 Best Ryan Gosling Movies, from ‘The Fall Guy’ and ‘Drive’ to ‘Barbie’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2023, and has since been updated.]
Ryan Gosling has that Ken-ergy. He’s Ken out of Ken. He’s Kendlessly Kentertaining. He’s the Kend all, be all. He’s the Kenvy of other actors. He’s impossible to not Kenjoy. He’s more, much more, than Kenough.
Gosling has had a long, fruitful career, but it’s safe to say that he’s never committed to a role as hard as he’s committed to the bit that was the “Barbie” press tour. Every interview and soundbite the Canadian actor gave in the publicity run for Greta Gerwig’s take on the iconic Mattel toy line has launched meme after meme, as he’s spoken about the importance of telling the tragic story of Barbie’s beau Ken. It’s a commitment that’s only seconded by his performance in the film itself, where he goes for broke with a hilarious, oblivious, and often sweet...

Ryan Gosling takes a lot into consideration before choosing his next movie role.
The Oscar-nominated actor recently opened up to The Wall Street Journal about his decision to avoid taking on darker projects so that he can be present with his family.
“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” he said. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with [wife] Eva [Mendes], and we make them with our family in mind first.”

However, it was not always the case, Gosling had his fair share of struggles in the early days, even having a disastrous audition in his career.

Of course, the actor has proved his capability with many remarkable roles, including The Notebook and his Oscar-nominated performances in La La Land and Barbie. Normally, the summer movie season would kick off with a Marvel superhero movie, but this May, we’re doing things a little differently. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This year and for the first time since the pandemic, Marvel isn’t launching the month of May. Instead, Universal jumped on the date for its new action comedy “The Fall Guy,” loosely based on the popular ’80s series starring Lee Majors. Two of the Oscar-nominated stars from last year’s blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenom unite for this new action rom-com from filmmaker David Leitch (“Bullet Train”). Those stars, of course, are Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, who were nominated for Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s Best Picture-winning “Oppenheimer,” respectively, two of the biggest movies of 2023. “The Fall Guy” premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival and even played at the annual exhibitors’ convention, CinemaCon,...

Ryan Gosling has been a versatile actor who has dabbled in various genres. Netflix is pivoting to lower-budget filmmaking projects, moving away from the high-octane big-budget action flicks, the New York Times reports. That would be a piece of great news for filmmakers as it opens up more opportunities to screen your next project on the Netflix platform.
Netflix and independent filmmaker Enough with the mega-budget projects
The story begins with Mark Wahlberg. According to Bi in 2020, Netflix paid Wahlberg a whopping $30 million to star in “Spenser Confidential,” which clocks in at 24 on the highest-paid film roles of all time. Critics panned the action thriller, an adaptation of Robert P. Barker’s 2013 novel “Wonderland.” It scored a dismal 36% on Rotten Tomatoes despite the hefty investment. That caused some turbulence in the screening giant, in which Netflix’s previous film chief, Scott Stuber, left the company in January following clashes with bosses over what kinds of films to produce. It used to be said that every movie, no matter how badly it did at the box office or critically, went to heaven. Heaven, of course, meant physical media. First, it was VHS, then it was Laserdisc, then DVD, Blu-ray, and now 4K Blu-rays; every movie would get some kind of physical media release. After all, rentals and sales were important to a film’s profitability. In fact, some movies that tanked theatrically did so well on DVD that they became perennials, such as Donnie Darko or The Transporter, with the DVD sales of that movie directly influencing the studio to greenlight a sequel and give Jason Statham a legit career as an action star. Yet, despite physical media making a comeback, it’s worth noting that some of the most popular movies in recent memory have never gotten a physical media release. And we’re not only talking about...

With Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame being such box office successes, many fans assumed that the Russo Brothers (Anthony and Joe Russo) would return to direct Avengers: Secret Wars. But in the years that followed, a lot changed.
During that period, the Russo Brothers helmed a few flicks through their Agbo company. Among them are the crime drama Cherry, starring Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo, and the action thriller The Gray Man, featuring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.

After creating the heartbreaking yet truly magnificent exit of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers — Joe Russo and Anthony Russo — are all set to bring new action to the screens. And this time, this peak entertainment would not be through Rdj or the MCU, but rather, ostensibly through Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling.

Netflix briefly jousted with the idea for a “A Knight’s Tale” sequel, but ultimately passed due to the concept.

I never liked Tom Ripley but I keep meeting him.
I’ve “met” Ripley in five films, and he’s now the protagonist of a somber eight-part Netflix series. So filmmakers clearly find his character intriguing. Even though he has no character.
That, in itself, reminds me that Hollywood is suffering the same problem as Washington: an absence of vital young protagonists. Voters are confronted by an election that’s really a rerun, likely opened by a debate no one wants to witness.

As Netflix’s new film chief, Dan Lin’s mandate is to focus on quality — and quantity.
Netflix’s co-ceo Ted Sarandos shed light on Lin’s strategy as the producer takes over film duties from Scott Stuber, who announced in January he was leaving the streamer.
“There is no appetite to make fewer films, but there is an unlimited appetite to make better films, always,” Sarandos said during the company’s Q1 earnings call. “Even though we have made, and we are making, great films. We want to make them better, of course.”
He was responding to a recent New York Times article, which reported that Lin aims to “improve the quality of the movies and produce a wider spectrum of films — at different budget levels — the better to appeal to the varied interests of Netflix’s 260 million subscribers.”

With Aladdin producer Dan Lin taking over film leadership at Netflix from Scott Stuber, there will still be a commitment to a robust feature slate. Such were the statements from the streamer’s co-ceo on Thursday during the company’s call to discuss its Q1 earnings report.
Fielding a question from analyst Richard Greenfield about a New York Times report that characterized Lin’s mandate was to make movies at Netflix “better, cheaper and less frequent” and how such a formula is possible, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos responded, “We did not participate in that article.”
Sarandos added, “That’s not a quote from Dan.”
“There’s no appetite to make fewer films,” said Sarandos, whose company release some 50 original features last year alone, with some previous-year tentpoles costing the studio north of $200 million including the Russo Brothers’ The Gray Man, and prestige pics like Noah Baumbach’s White Noise as much as $140M.

Netflix has made a strategic change following the end of the tenure of Scott Stuber as Netflix film chief, with Dan Lin taking over to alter the scenario in the film department. The very idea of it means a lot to filmmakers and stars for Netflix originals.
Millie Bobby Brown in Damsel
Millie Bobby Brown, who claimed global fandom with Netflix original show, Stranger Things has appeared in several other projects for the studio. But under Lin’s new tenure, the actor gets the short end of the stick. The strategic change in the studio means a lot of different things, especially in content production and cinematic adaptation.

Under Netflix’s new head of film, auteur-driven projects are said to be very much out of favour: Kathryn Bigelow’s Aurora included.
Just a couple of weeks ago, we covered a report which suggested that Dan Lin, the new head of Netflix’s film division, would be looking to scale back the company’s commitment to high-budget films. Expensive movies like The Gray Man, Red Notice or Rebel Moon would be a thing of the past and the film division would instead focus its resources on mid-budget projects.
So far though, the only projects about that aren’t getting a green light seem to be the ones being led by auteur filmmakers.
David Lynch revealed last week that Netflix had rejected his pitch for a feature-length animation while it has emerged today that Aurora – a Kathryn Bigelow project that has been in the works for a while at Netflix...

Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.
According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Digital i defines a “hit” as an original movie or a series that was watched by at least 30 percent of Netflix’s subscriber base in North America, EU, and Latam.
The long list of 2022 Netflix hits goes like this: “Wednesday” (61.8%), “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (53.3%), “Stranger Things 4” (48.0%), “The Adam Project” (47.9%), “Knives Out 2” (45.9%), “The Gray Man” (42.4%), “The Watcher” (41.9%), “The Tinder Swindler” (38.0%), “Inventing Anna” (37.5%), “The Sandman” (35.7%), “Senior Year” (35.6%), “1899” (34.7%), “Bridgerton” Season 2 (34.5%), “Troll” (34.0%), “Enola Holmes 2” (33.7%), “Luckiest Girl Alive” (33.4%), “Harry & Meghan” (32.7%), “Hustle” (32.6%), “The Man from Toronto” (31.5%), “Purple Hearts” (31.3%), “Me Time” (31.1%), “Day Shift” (31.0%), and “Falling for Christmas” (30.8%).

Agbo, the independent studio from brothers Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame, Citadel, Extraction, The Gray Man), is beefing up its executive ranks, hiring Chris Brearton as a partner.
Brearton, an attorney by trade, will oversee operations, business strategy and growth for the company, which is expanding into “new modes of storytelling,” including interactive and immersive worlds, thanks to the recent hiring of former Epic Games chief creative officer Donald Mustard as a partner.
Brearton most recently worked at Amazon MGM Studios, where he led corporate strategy, and before that was COO of MGM. He previously worked as a managing partner for the global law firm Latham & Watkins.
“Chris is a dynamic and trusted leader in the industry with a proven ability to spearhead transformational strategic initiatives, drive operational excellence and foster a culture of creativity and innovation,” said Agbo co-founder Anthony Russo in a statement. “His expertise and...

Bridgerton Season 3 is coming back with a bang. The new season will focus on the love story of Penelope and Colin, taking center stage. Chris Evans became a globally loved movie star after his Marvel role as Captain America. The actor played the super soldier in the film trilogy based on the character and also reprised his role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Despite the 42-year-old actor’s key role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s his co-star Robert Downey Jr. who is often credited for the meteoric success of MCU. Thanks to the Oscar winner’s laudable portrayal of Iron Man, he became the “Face of MCU” in many ways. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige once weighed in on Evans’ contribution to the MCU, noting how fans can often overlook the Captain America: Civil War star’s role in the company’s success.

Dan Lin has only been in the new Netflix film chief role for a little over a week, but he’s already making his mark.
Netflix has under gone a reorg under Lin, who took over on April 1 from Scott Stuber, and the existing executives on the feature film team will now be divided based on genre, IndieWire has learned. Each of the different film team leaders will split up a few genres a piece.
Here’s how it breaks down: Ori Marmur gets action, fantasy, horror, and sci-fi movies. Kira Goldberg gets thrillers, dramas, and family films. Niija Kuykendall gets faith-based, young adult, and holiday movies, and Jason Young gets comedies and rom-coms. As a result of the changes, about a dozen individuals from the film team are being laid off, which isn’t uncommon when a new boss comes in.
How does this structure differ from what came before?...

Dan Lin, Netflix’s new head of film is said to want to create a film slate at the company with better quality films that are made for a more modest budget.
Last month it was announced that Dan Lin would be taking over the reins of Netflix’s film division following the exit of Scott Stuber.
For years, Stuber had been in charge of the Silicon Valley company’s movie slate and had overseen a huge ramp-up in development that at one point saw Netflix releasing a new film onto its service every week.
Of course, that made Netflix’s movie slate far, far larger than any of its studio competitors and while Stuber would eventually begin to shrink the number of films that the company put out, the general consensus was that Netflix suffered from quality control issues given that one person had responsibility for so many projects.

Watch spotting at the Oscars is always catnip for timepiece lovers, as the biggest stars walk the red carpet wearing a parade of hyped horological mechanisms by the likes of Omega, Vacheron Constantin, Jacob & Co., Iwc, Cartier and Rolex (typically their own as that brand doesn’t gift or lend its pieces).
Falling into that latter category at Oscars 2024 was John Cena, who appeared nearly naked onstage during the telecast to announce the award for best costume design.
In addition to his modesty garment and a pair of Birkenstocks, the only other item the actor sported was his own Rolex Explorer II watch, which featured a white dial and an arrow-shaped 24-hour hand, as spotted by Watch Pro. The watch, which can display two time zones simultaneously, retails for $9,650.
Apparently, even when you’re naked at the Academy Awards, you don’t want to be without a trusty timepiece.

Joe Russo gained enough cache with "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame" that he's been able to pump out generic streaming action flicks unimpeded ever since. Not to be needlessly negative, but I've seen "The Gray Man" and I don't remember a single thing that happened in "The Gray Man." Russo has also penned two "Extraction" movies, which shot to the top of Netflix's most-watched charts but similarly felt as if they came and went without making all that much of an impression. All of which isn't too egregious, but Joe is also ready to welcome an AI-driven garbage future in which our films are produced entirely by machines.
In other words, I'm far from the biggest Joe Russo fan. But that doesn't mean I can't give the man his due when it comes to his Marvel work. Alongside his brother, Anthony, Joe is responsible for some of the...

In 2022, Dan Lin, the producer of “The Lego Movie” and “It,” was in negotiations to become head of DC Studios. It was a singular opportunity to reimagine the company behind Superman, Batman and other costumed heroes. But talks broke down. Among the reported reasons was that David Zaslav, the head of DC’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, and Lin could not agree on a way to properly compensate him for leaving his production company Rideback for the new gig.
So why, less than two years later, has Lin decided to take a different corporate job, overseeing Netflix’s film division? And what kinds of obstacles will he need to overcome if Netflix is going to raise the quality of the movies it makes?
For Lin, Netflix offers a vast consumer base, one that overshadows those of rivals like Max or Disney+. It’s also more stable than other media companies.

Producer, studio veteran and Rideback founder Dan Lin has been named chairman of Netflix Film to replace the outgoing Scott Stuber, effective April 1.
Lin will report to Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria and worked with the streamer on The Two Popes, and the new live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The appointment came sooner than many in Hollywood expected after it was announced in January that Stuber was to depart after seven years.
It is understood Lin’s name was considered early on in the process to replace Stuber, alongside former Universal chief Stacey Snider, and Disney’s Sean Bailey.
