Hulu is out with its list of new and expiring content for the month of September, and what better way to beat the back-to-school blues than with a whole bunch of binge-watching.
Among the new goodies coming next month is the 12th episode and season finale of horror anthology series “Into the Dark.” Out Sept. 6, the finale is called “Pure,” and is described as a female coming-of-age horror story in which a group of teenage girls perform a secret ritual at a “Purity Retreat.” When one of them begins to see a “supernatural entity,” a scary question is posed: “What is more dangerous: the demon they’ve unleashed, or the pressure to conform to their fathers’ expectations?” Scary indeed!
The Hulu original documentary “Untouchable” will be released on Sept. 2, described as “the inside story of the meteoric rise and shocking fall of movie titan Harvey Weinstein.” Directed by Ursula Macfarlane,...

There’s more fun with food in the PG animated movie Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.
Bill Hader (Turbo) and Anna Faris (What’s Your Number?) return to voice inventor Flint Lockwood and intrepid reporter Sam Sparks, respectively.
This time around, Lockwood discovers that he didn’t actually destroy his machine in the original film. Instead, his invention is now creating animal-food hybrids, “foodimals!” Lockwood and his friends have to embark on a new adventure to save the world again, but this time from hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, hippotatomuses, cheesepiders and other foodimals.
The $115 million-grossing sequel got high praise from critics, 71% approval, according to Rotten Tomatoes. As Entertainment Weekly‘s Keith Staskiewicz wrote: “The animation is inventive and elastic, the dialogue zippy and shamelessly punny, and the tone lighthearted and fun,...

(Former) shock rocker (is he all that shocking anymore?) Marilyn Manson seems to be enjoying this whole acting thing. He's done bit parts here and there over the years ("Party Monster" and "Jawbreaker" among them), but it seems he's taking a bigger step toward movie roles. He already has a stint in Quentin Dupieux's "Wrong Cops" and how he's headed to cable. Brian Warner will stretch his wings playing himself in a guest spot on Showtime's "Californication" starring David Duchovny. Production on the series is now underway and you can see the longawaited Manson/Duchovny pairing in 2013 on the seventh season's seventh episode. [THR]

Sony Animation artists Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn have been set to direct "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" reports Variety.
The project is still very much in development but the story will continue the adventures of inventor Flint Lockwood. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are penning the script while Kirk Bodyfelt will produce.
Pearn served as head of story while Cameron was a story artist on the first film, Cameron also directed the direct-to-dvd release "Open Season 3". Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who helmed the original 2009 film, are serving as executive producers.

Way back in April last year, a sequel to 2009’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs was announced, coming just a few months after the first film’s substantial success, turning Sony’s $100m. budget into just under $250m. at the box office, an incredibly impressive feat for the relatively new directing pair of Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
Variety are reporting that Sony are once again turning to a relatively unknown duo to direct the sequel, in the form of Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, two Sony Animation artists who will be making their major debut with Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2.
Whilst I admit that I’m still yet to see the original, it looked brilliant when it came out two years ago, and had a lot of terrific talent lending their voices for the film, headed up by Bill Hader and Anna Faris, with Nil Patrick Harris,...

Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” was one of the biggest surprises of 2009, and, truthfully, I’m surprised it’s taken Sony this long to get off their collective behinds and start developing a sequel. After all, the film did amass $230 million worldwide, which isn’t too shabby given that the premise isn’t immediately accessible to those who haven’t read the book. If, like so many others, you decided to pass on the flick, by all means, correct this issue Asap, especially if you fancy Bill Hader and Anna Faris. And I know a lot of you out there do. Sony Animation wizards Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn have been selected to direct “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2″, which, apparently, hasn’t received the proverbial greenlight as of this writing. Both gentlemen worked on the original, and Cameron even helmed the...

Some four months after Horrible Bosses scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein landed the writing jobs, Variety reports that Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn will direct Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 for Sony Animation. Despite the film not actually having a greenlight as of this writing, the behind-the-scenes action is propulsive enough to get helmers signed; I’ll take it as a good sign.
Neither are strangers to this franchise: Cameron did some voices for the 2009 original, while Pearn was credited as head of story. The former of the duo has some furhter animation experience behind him as well, having directed last year’s Open Season 3. None of those qualifications lower or raise my hopes for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 — since I don’t have any to begin with — but it’s interesting to think that Sony also hired unknowns for the original, Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The dynamic duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller brought fantastic life to the adaptation of the classic children's book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, even if it deviated far from the source material, but now a different team will tackle the forthcoming sequel. Variety reports Sony Animation artists Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn will be at the helm of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which, as we learned in July, will not be based on the sequel book, titled Pickles in Pittsburgh. At this point we don't know anything about the story, but the talent being lined up behind the camera doesn't have me worried in the slightest. Pearn and Cameron worked on the first film as head of story and a story artist respectively and the former is also responsible for the home video sequel Open Season 3. In addition, the writing team of John Francis...

MGM is is throwing their hat into the animation ring with a feature adaptation of Jarrett Krosoczka's children's book, Punk Farm. The film will be directed by David Silverman (The Simpsons Movie) from a script by Jim Hecht with a rewrite from David Stern. The story revolves "around five barnyard animals who form an underground rock band." The film will be produced by Kevin Messick and Anita Camarata under their Prana Studios banner, who will also handle the CG animation.
This is the first film for the studio since 1989's All Dogs Go to Heaven and the second film since emerging from recovering from bankruptcy. An Aardman Production For Sony Pictures Animation Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen Also On Board
Culver City, Calif. – Hugh Grant will voice the lead role alongside an all-star cast in The Pirates! Band Of Misfits, the new stop-motion, 3D, animated film produced by Aardman Animations for Sony Pictures Animation. The film, which will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, will be released March 30, 2012 in North America.
Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to...

Earlier today, Disc Dish had a chance to speak with Michael Imperioli (The Lovely Bones)—late of TV’s The Sopranos and Life on Mars and currently keeping the streets of urban Michigan safe in Detroit 1-8-7– about his film 2009 The Hungry Ghosts, which is available on DVD from Virgil Films and is currently streaming on Hulu.com.
Written and directed by Imperioli, the movie follows 36 hours in the lives of a group of spiritually bereft New Yorkers including, among others, a hard-living New York City call-in radio show host (Steven Schirripa, Open Season 3), his high-voltage wife (Sharon Angela, TV’s The Sopranos) and a grungy downtown gabber just out of rehab (Nick Sandow, Frame of Mind). Oh, and there’s also a lot of cocaine, booze, gambling, stripping and sex.

Here we go with the first Film Diary post in its new weekly slot. It’s been pretty quiet so far, but from here on in it’s going to get a lot more bumpy. Remember, if you’re willing to offer me suggestions for what to watch, I’m more than willing to take them on board- if I don’t own them, I’ll even go and source them so I can share the love.
For anyone who missed it, here’s the skinny. Basically, what I’m presenting here is my attempt to chart a whole year’s worth of film-watching – something I have wanted to do for some time now. The aim is to post frequently, chronicling every film I watch this year – both offering reviews and setting myself the ultimate goal of watching (and writing about) as many films as humanly possible, without abandoning the necessary functions of normal existence…...

We're back for another week of looking at the sales and rentals for DVD and Blu-rays last week. This list features the top selling and most rented movies from the week ending January 30, 2011. Last week's sales sees newcomers dominating the chart. Red, Secretariat, Open Season 3 and Saw: The Final Chapter take the top 4 spots in their debut week. Rounding out the top five is Takers. The other newcomer to make the chart was the Season 2 release of the TV show Glee. In somewhat surprising news, Buzz Lightyear and Woody prove they just won't die as Toy Story 3 actually returns to the charts 3 months after release, landing at number ten.
