Regé-Jean Page’s paladin Xenk is an earnest member of the core heroes who make up Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Best known for his role as the romantic lead in the first season of Bridgerton, Page is no stranger to working in fantasy, having voiced Orpheus in the podcast series of The Sandman. He took a moment to speak with Den of Geek about the virtues of wearing a cape—but wouldn’t spill any secrets about Xenk’s sword.
Den of Geek: You play Xenk, a paladin who is a bit of a stick in the mud. What can you tell us about your character?
Regé-Jean Page: I don’t think he’d describe himself as a stick in the mud. I think his extended action sequences would also beg to differ. He’s not necessarily no fun. He...

Khalid has released the second single from his upcoming (and, for now, untitled) album. It’s called “Eleven” and comes with a lyric video showing a sports car cruising through the city at night.
In the lyrics, Khalid describes looking a crush up and down in the passenger seat: “Late at night, eleven, we’re cruisin’/Lately, I’ve been watchin’ your movements/If I’m the only one that you’re choosin’/Am I your favorite drug you’ve been usin’?”

Major Lazer and Khalid use a gunshot as a breakup metaphor on their reflective new song, “Trigger.”
“It’s obvious that you’re already gone/So unleash your weapon, aim it at my chest,” Khalid sings over the group’s simmering synths and minimal electronics. “If our love is a drug, you’re the one with the trigger/Shoot me down, shoot me down/I don’t wanna remember you.”
The brief track — two verses, two choruses — builds to a wordless hook of trendy, pitch-shifted vocals and a stuttering dance beat.

All cinema is wonderful, but there’s a certain wonder that’s only possible through animation. We have almost grown numb to how realistic computer-graphic animation has advanced, but there are few things akin to the experience of being transported to a dreamworld that lets its colors wash over and swallow you whole. Similarly, anime has reached some staggering heights of what’s possible through traditional animation, and in many ways Promare sets a new standard in that area, delivering visuals that will be discussed for years and strive to be matched and surpassed. It’s a gorgeous, fun fever dream of a movie that captures the exact spirit of what makes anime so magical and powerful.

Joyn has acquired a trio of international drama series from Beta Film. The German streaming service, run by local media giant ProSiebenSat.1 and Discovery, has acquired Alex Pina’s acclaimed Spanish drama “The Pier,” Nordic noir thriller “Hassel,” and Russian drama “Trigger.”
A U.S. deal is understood to be in the offing for “The Pier,” which Beta has also sold to HBO Europe, Sbs in Australia, and Mbc in the Middle East. The limited series was an original for Spanish pay-tv platform Movistar Plus and hails from the team behind “Money Heist.” It follows an architect who discovers her dead husband was leading a double life.
“Hassel” stars Ola Rapace (“Skyfall”) as a streetwise detective in charge of a police task force and whose mentor is brutally murdered. It originally went out as an original on the Viaplay streaming service in Scandinavia. Russian series “Trigger” follows a psychologist who...

“Trigger,” a Russian drama centering on a psychologist, Artem, who practices “provocative therapy” – a method that forces clients to confront their problems in a shocking, sometimes brutal way – had its world premiere at Mipcom on Sunday. Variety spoke to its star, Maxim Matveev.
Psychologist Sergey Nasibian acted as a consultant on the show, and as well as sharing past cases, he employed the same “provocative” therapeutic methods on Matveev as are shown in the series. “It was a nice experience because I had the opportunity to feel what Artem’s clients feel like when they have a conversation with him,” Matveev says. “This method is really cool and it works, and through this encounter [with Nasibian] I could understand why I became an actor.”
Matveev says there are some similarities between an actor and a psychologist as both have to get inside the mind of someone else, and adopt different personas. “With each client,...

Some 14,000 international TV executives, including around 5,000 buyers from over 100 countries, will be cruising down the Croisette in Cannes this weekend for the annual Mipcom market.
The sun is set to shine in the south of France and the major international distributors, including the Hollywood studios, will hope this helps shift their latest high-end dramas and non-scripted entertainment formats.
The Americans will be back in town, having largely given Mip TV in April a miss, with high-profile buyers from the FAANGs joining traditional buyers from the broadcast networks and cable stations. The likes of Apple’s Morgan Wandell, Hulu’s Craig Erwich, Amazon’s Cj Yu and Euro chief Georgia Brown, Facebook’s Toby Faulkner and Mina Lefevre and YouTube’s Luke Hyams are expected to be joined by Fox’s Rob Wade and teams from Bravo, FX, A+E Networks, Nat Geo and Discovery.

Madrid — Dropped by sales agent Beta Film on Thursday, here is the first ever trailer for “El Embarcadero” (The Pier), the first series by Alex Pina, creator of “Money Heist” (La Casa de Papel) after that series became a worldwide phenomenon.
Pina and fellow “Money Heist” and “The Pier” creator Esther Martínez will be joined on stage at Mipcom on Tuesday Oct. 16 to present “Money Heist” by Spanish TV stars Álvaro Morte, the Professor in “Money Heist,” Verónica Sánchez (“Morocco”) and Irene Arcos, co-star of Pina and Martínez’s break-through series “Vis a Vis.”
A Movistar + original series, produced in association with Atresmedia Studios and Pina’s Vancouver Media, “The Pier,” described as a sensual romantic thriller, promises to be one highlight of this year’s Cannes Mipcom trade fair as many in the industry look to the likes of Pina to suggest where the international TV industry is going.

Anne-Marie makes friend-zoning sound like a pretty contentious thing in her recent hit, “Friends.” But she’s clearly getting by with a little help from them, as pal Ed Sheeran picked her to open his American tour, which included a Rose Bowl stop Saturday, on top of co-writing a newer single, “2002,” with her. She’s moonlighting at a few stops along the way on Sheeran’s stadium jaunt by doing some smallish headlining gigs of her own, the first of which was Monday night at the Roxy. For her more fervent, intimacy-craving fans, it was a welcome chance to hear her sing about the friend-zone from somewhere other than an actual end zone.
One of the chief assets that emerged in this close-up and sweaty setting was that Anne-Marie is, well, friendly. Young American women who’ve been looking for a Brit-pop Bff or virtual pen pal from the other...

Sky Germany’s “Pagan Peak,” Movistar +’s “Giants” and ITV’s “Cleaning Up” will be sneak-peaked at the inaugural MipDrama Buyers’ Summit, a series-in-production showcase which also highlights Russia’s “Trigger.”
The country with the biggest presence at the Summit is, however, Finland, sporting “Arctic Circle” and “Bullets,” both co-financed by Elisa Vilhde.
This is a sign of how Scandinavia still punches way above its geographic weight in drama series production. It also flags the building drive into high-end drama investment by European telecoms which account, between Telefonica’s Movistar + and Elisa, for half the titles at the MipDrama Buyers’ Summit.
That’s one trend at the Summit which, running on the Sunday April 8, the day before the official launch of MipTV, reworks MipTV’s successful MipDrama Screenings, offering longer excerpts – 15 minutes – of less series – six rather than 12. While fans might know Chrissy Metz for her role as Kate Pearson on the television show This Is Us, she had a much darker childhood in real life than her on-screen story. The 37-year-old actress opened up in her new memoir titled, This Is Me, about her stepfather — who she called Trigger — and the abuse he put her through because of how much she weighed. "My mom married Trigger at the courthouse. Soon she was pregnant again, with another girl, Abigail. Trigger loved his two biological children... Me, not so much. My mother was always at work, so she didn’t see how he treated me," she wrote. A post shared by Chrissy Metz (@chrissymetz) on Sep 25, 2017 at 2:47pm Pdt Chrissy revealed that it was her body that "seemed to offend him" and literally had to sneak food into the bathroom when she wanted to eat in fear that...

Weirdos, the latest film from the quintessentially Canadian auteur Bruce McDonald, is on its face just another road trip comedy with the spirit of Andy Warhol, but this time Warhol actually appears on screen — although for legal reasons, per the credits, Rhys Bevan-John plays “Not Andy Warhol.” It’s the summer of 1976 in Nova Scotia when Kit (Dylan Authors) takes out on the road with his radiant pal Alice (Julia Sarah Stone). She’s as confused as he is when she asks if they’ll be having “goodbye sex,” something they’ve been putting off for an obvious reason.
Kit and Alice bum rides, walk, and hitchhike from Antigonish to the shore where Kit hopes to escape his father’s unkind words at home and move in with his mother Laura (Molly Parker), a hippy who regrets she ever moved out of Toronto. She’s presumably more open-minded than his...

For his first feature film since 2008's "Adam Resurrected," famed screenwriter and director Paul Schrader is drawing on a particularly diverse and unique group of talent for "The Canyons." Boasting a script penned by Bret Easton Ellis with a cast featuring adult film star James Deen, Lindsay Lohan and up and comers Nolan Funk and Amanda Brook, another intriguing element has been added to the production. Broken Social Scene co-founder Brendan Canning has been selected to score "The Canyons." While the musician has found fame and acclaim both as a member of Bss and as a solo artist, he's no stranger to the movie world. Canning has scored films such as Bruce McDonald's “The Tracy Fragments” and “Trigger” as well as “Snow Cake.” And alongside Broken Social Scene, he's participated on soundtrack work for “Half Nelson”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “It’s Kind of a...

One of my favorite films of last year was an indie called Trigger, which followed two women who were together in a band during the 1990s reunited for a one-night only show present day. The film starred Molly Parker and Tracy Wright, the latter who tragically died shortly after filming. Parker attended the NBC TCA night in Los Angeles to speak about her new role in The Firm and I was able to ask about her experience working on Trigger, in which Wright's character was a lesbian and Parker's was a little more vague.
Parker described their characters' relationship as "not sexual and not romantic but really full of love. To me, that movie is just all about the way we love the people we first fall in love with. As girls, if they had been good they would have been so happy to be with each other. And they weren't,...

First time and younger filmmakers made a mark in huge ways this year, providing everything from spellbinding documentaries (No Look Pass), heart-wrenching drama (Pariah, Break My Fall, Circumstance), and fresh comedy (Jamie and Jessie are Not Together, Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same). Pair that with the quality coming from established filmmakers like Celine Sciamma (Tomboy), and you have a year marked by the presence of strong, unique voices.
Hard Hitters
Nowhere is that strength of vision more prominent than in the year’s dramas. Well-meaning (but tired) melodramas were drowned out by clear-eyed, nuanced filmmaking, most evident in Pariah, the story of a young African-American woman struggling with her identity, and Circumstance, which features the romance between two teenaged girls in Iran.

It's kind of a quiet DVD week with the exception of a few late summer movies making their way to home video. Probably the biggest release of the week is J.J. Abrams' Super 8, which was one of the best reviewed movies of the summer, along with a few not so well-received flicks: Conan the Barbarian and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. Some of the notable smaller films hitting stores today include The Devil's Double starring Dominic Cooper, French holocaust drama Sarah's Key, and Bruce McDonald's Trigger. Sports and documentary fans may want to check out the Espn Films Collection Vol. 1, while fans of good movies might be interested in Criterion re-issues of 12 Angry Men and Wes Anderson's Rushmore not to mention ¡Three Amigos! on Blu. What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the full list of releases after the jump.

Tracy Wright (l.) and Molly Parker rock out in Trigger.
The music-filled 2010 film drama Trigger stars avant-garde actress Tracy Wright (Highway 61) in her final performance before her death from cancer that same year.
Wright and Molly Parker (TV’s Deadwood) portray two female rockers who reunite 10 years after their friendship — and band — has fallen apart. Coming together for a benefit concert following their long estrangement, the two begin with a dinner, followed by the gig, and finally the after-party, all with the hope of recapturing their once-magical connection.
Directed by Bruce McDonald (This Movie is Broken), the unrated Canadian movie also stars Don McKellar (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Sarah Polley (Splice) and Callum Keith Rennie (TV’s The Killing).
Trigger was first seen at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was selected as one of the fest’s Top Ten films.

If there's one thing you want to happen in Trigger, it's for Kat and Vic to end up happily ever after. That can be as a couple (preferably) or as friends, but you just want them to be Ok with one another. (Well, maybe you'll want a little more.)
Tracy Wright (in her last film before she passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2010), plays Vic, a recovering drug addict who reunites with her ex-bandmate Kat (Deadwood's Molly Parker) for a tribute show in their honor. The two couldn't be more different: Vic is low-key where Kat is high-strung. Vic wants to stay under the radar while Kat craves attention. Their meeting at a restaurant for dinner has them picking at each other instantly. They're like ex-lovers, but you never know if it went that far.
Vic is a lesbian, and is hit on by an old friend at the tribute party.

Patricia Rozema's 1995 film When Night is Falling followed the story of Camille, a "straight" woman who is trying to find happiness in the things that are going right for her. But when her dog dies and she meets an alluring circus performer at the laundromat, things begin to shift, and she can't tell if it's for better or for worse.
Whatever came of the actors and director behind the '90s circus-lesbian flick? We'll tell you!
Pascale Bussières as Camille, a professor at a religious university who falls for another woman
The redheaded French Canadian beauty has starred in several films in her home country, including another gay-themed film, Set Me Free (1999) and one called Replay, in which she was obsessed with her best friend. In more recent years, she's appeared on French TV shows Belle-Baie and Mirador, while continuing to make films. (She's starred in two that came out this year already.

Variety reports that director Bruce McDonald is set to helm the supernatural thriller, 'Dark Highway.' It's a change of pace for the Canadian born director who is often attached to either low-budget films or television series. The film is described as: "Story follows a man being chased who is trying to get to a certain place in one day. He doesn't know whether the situation is real or his imagination." Sounds wacky and befitting of the director if you're familiar with some of his other works. 2008 saw the release of his low-budget zombie film, 'Pontypool.' As opposed to having buckets of blood and violence, the film focused on the way a small-town radio station staff reacted to words themselves becoming infected, causing a sort of mental breakdown. With an estimated budget of only $1.5 million, the film managed an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The director's other work includes films,...

Molly Parker had a life changing experience making the film Trigger with long-time friend Tracey Wright. Not only was it a home coming, working again with director Bruce McDonald on Daniel McIvor.s script, it was unexpectedly emotional. Wright was dying of cancer. Trigger.s about two middle aged former rock stars who have a turbulent relationship, coming together after years apart for a special benefit performance. The film was finished just before Wright passed away. Monsters and Critics spoke with Parker M&C: There.s a shared history between these women. What.s the relationship like when we meet them? Parker: These women haven.t seen each other in 12 . 15 years. That.s said they grew up together. They were each...

Trigger, the newest film from Canadian director Bruce McDonald (Pontypool), is a quiet, contemplative little film that ended up being one of the most intelligent, interesting one that I saw at the 2011 International Film Festival Boston. A heavy, intense film comprised almost entirely of dialogue between two actors, it walks a careful line between self-indulgent and self-aware, between pretentious and intricate complexity. Fortunately, even when it's being pretentious, it works. It's a thoroughly satisfying film.
Two women -- Kat (Molly Parker) and Vic (Tracy Wright) -- are former members of the fictional alt-rock band Trigger, a band whose star shone hot and bright and fast years ago, but whose members have scattered down very different paths since then. After a short rock and roll life replete with addiction and arguments, the two women turned away from both their band and each other. Kat has settled into a thriving life writing...

The Independent Film Festival of Boston [1] recently released their full line-up and it's a doozy. Sundance favorites such as The Future [2] and Submarine [3] will be there, along with awesome documentaries like Being Elmo [4] (With Elmo In Attendance!!!) and Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times [5]. I'm looking forward to films I wasn't able to catch at Sundance and SXSW, such as the legal documentary Hot Coffee, the heartbreaking How to Die in Oregon, and the new fascinating Conan O'Brien film. Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins [6] also looks like it will rock the house. The full line-up is below. The festival is April 27th through May 4th, and it's one of my favorite movie events of the year. If you live anywhere in New England, I invite you to come and check it out. You can follow IFFBoston on Facebook for updates [7] or buy your passes now [8]! Narrative Features 13 Assassins...

After being snubbed by the major Hollywood awards, only receiving 1 nomination and win for Paul Giamatti at the Golden Globes, Barney’s Version has been highly recognized by Canadian audiences. Lubna Azabal, Incendies Denis Villeneuve's Incendies won the award for Best Canadian Film from the Toronto Film Critics Association earlier this evening. It was Villeneuve's second consecutive win, following his victory last year for Polytechnique. Canada's entry for the 2011 Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, Incendies is based on Wajdi Mouawad’s play about Quebec siblings who, after traveling to the Middle East, uncover their dying mother’s disturbing past. Two days ago, Incendies was named the top Canadian film of 2010 by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle. Director Bruce McDonald, whose Trigger was also up for the Best Canadian Film award, was honored with a special citation for his four 2010 releases: the aforementioned Trigger, Movie Is Broken, Hard Core Logo 2, and the documentary Music from the Big House. Please read the title in your best exasperated Nomi Malone voice. Plz and thx. I can't read the words "different places" without hearing Showgirls in my head.
The big critics prizes (Los Angeles and New York) have come and gone but more cities are following suit declaring their bests. Now, by the magic of the expandable post, we can share them all without appearing to be as dull obsessive and monotonous about what we do here at the film experience as those investigations into unsolved cold cases are in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
I've lept from Nomi to Noomi so I pray you're still with me.
I just watched the first film in the Millenium trilogy months after the hoopla and and I'm sorry that I have to ask it: What is the big deal? It's so inelegantly structured as a film and so TV like in its choices.

Every year 'round about this time the Toronto International Film Festival Group announces their selections as Canada's Top Ten Feature Films and Short Films. Selected by a jury of industry professionals it's general a pretty good guide for what's happening here in any given year.
This year's selections were announced today and while I personally consider the absence of Jacob Tierney's Good Neighbours to be a significant omission it's pretty hard to argue with the titles that are actually in there. The films selected will all screen at the Tiff Bell Lightbox beginning in January. Here's the full announcement:

Taking place in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, the Whistler Film Festival, only in its tenth year, has been building a reputation as the Sundance of Canadian film and for good reason. Programmers at Whistler have always displayed great taste but they’ve now entered into the stratosphere of impeccable and at this rate, Whistler is turning into the festival I look forward to the most.
In addition to the previously announced opening gala presentation of Daydream Nation (trailer), the rest of the festival has been announced and it’s like a girl’s dream. You Are Here (trailer, review), Jacob Tierney’s Good Neighbours, Blue Valentine, Bruce McDonald’s Trigger (trailer), Attenberg (trailer), Wrecked (trailer), Meek’s Cutoff, Brad Anderson’s Vanishing on 7th Street (trailer, review) and the world premiere of Hard Core Logo 2.
Phew, I lost my breath just oogling at the goodness.
