Japanese cinema has been on a somewhat successful stalemate for years now, with the titles produced (at least the ones we manage to sea in the West out of the 600 the country produces every year) retaining the same, relatively high quality, even though no particular steps forward have been made for years now Regarding the state of the industry in 2023, you can read the very informative article by Mark Schilling, but the thing I have to mention is that, despite the issues, local movies definitely have four things working quite well for them, particularly this year. First of all, the big names deliver almost always, with Miyazaki, Hamaguchi and Koreeda proving the fact this year also. Second of all, the quality of anime remains high as always and thirdly, some efforts at different cinematic approaches continue to take place, even though they can almost exclusively be found in low budget and short films.

Kerry Washington is reflecting on the moments in her life when she has felt like she may be done with Hollywood, only to be drawn back in by an “extraordinary” script.
In a profile for W magazine’s W TV Portfolio 2023, Washington admitted that she has spent her life trying not to be an actor.
“I am always quitting this business, and then right when I decide that I’m done is when something extraordinary comes across my desk,” she told W. “I was really, really done with this business right before I read the script for Ray. I was really, really done with this business right before I read the script for The Last King of Scotland. I was entirely done with this business before reading the script for Scandal. This is what happens again and again.”

It’s obvious from the get-go that Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is more than a puzzle-branded reskin of Super Meat Boy. While old-school titles like Dr. Mario or this game’s source of inspiration, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, simply wedged Mario and Sonic characters, respectively, into Puyo Puyo-like match-four gameplay, Mean Meat Machine refreshingly feels as if puzzles have been seamlessly sutured into the pixel-precise acrobatics of prior Team Meat titles. This is meant as high praise, as the results here feel both familiar and wholly unique—a bit like Tetris if Tetris were out for revenge, trying to kill you at every turn.
At heart, Mean Meat Machine hinges on rotating and dropping pairs of malformed Meat Boy clones from the top of the screen to the bottom. Each time players successfully connect four clones of the same color, those clones are cleared from the level’s “gene pool.

Jimmy Page and Keith Richards didn’t cross paths much in the 1970s. After all, the guitarists stayed busy with their bands, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. Maybe you’ve heard of them (sarcasm font). Richards didn’t like Zep, but he respected Page and tried to get him drunk when he played on a Stones song in the 1980s.

Page cut his teeth as a session musician before joining the Yardbirds and later forming Led Zeppelin. He knew a thing or two about staying busy. Zeppelin’s relentless touring and recording schedule left him little time for working with other bands in the 1970s.
That changed in the 1980s.

Nick Cannon gave his best effort on Mother’s Day, but the “Masked Singer” host admits that he made quite the mix-up.
While speaking on Monday’s episode of his radio show, “The Daily Cannon,” the 42-year-old shared his intention of offering personalized, hand-written cards to each of the six women with whom he shares children on Mother’s Day. Things went awry, however, when he got confused and switched up the cards.
“I could buy whatever,” he began his harrowing tale. “To show people how you really feel, write it down.”
Cannon, who is the father of 12 children, divulged to his co-hosts that he was in the middle of penning “hand-written messages from the heart” when he got the cards “mixed up.”

One big, happy family — for the time being. Nick Cannon is opening up about how his oldest children feel about their multitude of siblings.
The “Masked Singer” host sat down for a chat on the “Howie Mandel Does Stuff” podcast, and he addressed what his 11-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe — whom he shares with ex-wife Mariah Carey — think about Cannon’s 10 other kids, with a number of different partners.
“At this point, they enjoy it,” Cannon said. “They have fun and they’re the oldest.”
“But who knows where that will go when 16 hits?” he added.
The twins will be turning 12 on Apr. 30, and Cannon explained how the nature of their relationship has evolved, as one might expect, as the kids get older.
“It’s my first time having 12-year-olds and I have a set of them! And we’re having real conversations,” he shared. “Because, you know, their lives are far from normal.

Nick Cannon wants to meet Taylor Swift at midnight.
The 42-year-old joked that he would “absolutely” love to have a baby with the newly-single Swift in an interview on “The Howard Stern Show” on Monday. Cannon is shooting his shot here for baby no. 13, which just so happens to be Swift’s legendary lucky number.
Cannon is already a father to 12 children by six different mothers.
In his appearance with Howard Stern and co-host Robin Quivers, Cannon was asked whether he’s done having kids.
“Every time I answer this question – I can never answer it correctly because I don’t know,” the “Masked Singer” host admitted with a laugh.
“I’m happy currently with the [children] that I got,” he continued, noting that any future baby mommas would “have to be amazing.”

Nick Cannon had a few things to say when asked for parenting advice while chatting to Et Canada’s Jed Tavernier.
The father of 12 was asked what kind of a dad he is during his upcoming “One-on-One” special, admitting: “Definitely a disciplinarian, but it’s all out of respect and love. I constantly let my children know how much I love them.
“And I’m a big kid! So I’m probably the cool dad because I’m probably more mischievous and, you know, probably just as wild as they are. But I’m definitely the stern parent.”
Tavernier then questioned whether he had any advice for new dads or anyone wanting to become a parent, to which he replied, “Make sure your partner is on the same frequency as you. Especially in a co-parenting situation, you want to be aligned… similar values, similar ideas on how to raise a child.

Based on the essay “Tsuchi wo Kurau Hibi ” by Tsutomu Mizukami is a genuine Japanese movie, since all of its narrative elements seem to be rooted in the particular culture.
The Zen Diary is screening at Black Movie
Writer Tsutomu lives alone at a mountain cabin in Nagano, with his main dealing being growing fruits and vegetables, which he later meticulously prepares into simple but meaningful meals, as his Zen teachings during his childhood as a monk dictated. In fact, even his writings are based on the particular three aspects, as his frequent narration throughout the movie eloquently shows. Few things break his ascetic routine: the frequent visits of his editor Machiko, who is also his girlfriend, visiting his elderly neighbor, his mother-in-law, who is living in an even more remote location, and interacting, although not exactly in a pleasant way, with his brother-in-law and his wife. Today I watched “Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?” for the first time. It is Bae Yong-Kyun first feature and it won the Golden Leopard in Locarno in 1989. It is going to be shown in London, as part of the Korean Film Festival ‘A Century of Korean Cinema Focus’. I am not sure how I feel about it.

We spoke with former BioWare programmer Cameron Tofer about the legacy of Baldur's Gate, the game's enhanced editions, and modern RPGs.
This article is part 3 in our History of PC Gaming series.
The reveal of Baldur’s Gate III inspired a couple of popular reactions. To some, it represented the long-awaited comeback of a franchise that is synonymous with the idea of what a role-playing game should be. To others, it forced them to ask aloud with some trepidation “What is Baldur’s Gate?”
Cameron Tofer is a game developer familiar with the long, and sometimes complicated, legacy of the seminal computer RPG Baldur’s Gate. He not only co-founded Beamdog, the studio working to preserve and enhance the Baldur’s Gate series and other vital RPGs, but he worked as a programmer at BioWare when one of the most legendary studios in gaming was little more...

Not 24 hours after The Big Bang Theory wrapped its 279th and final episode, creator Chuck Lorre whizzes by its soundstage in his golf cart, startled by what he sees.
"They're tearing the set down already?" he says.
Having created 11 sitcoms over the course of his four-decade career, Lorre should be plenty familiar with studios valuing available space over sentimentality. But even the physical dismantling of his billion-dollar Warner Bros. franchise doesn't dampen his mood. The 66-year-old comedy vet, once dubbed "the angriest man in television," seems downright Zen. And why not? Big Bang signs ...

Renée Zellweger is unrecognizable as screen legend Judy Garland in the first trailer for the anticipated biopic Judy.
The 50-year-old star stars as Garland as she arrives in London in the winter of 1968 for a series of sold-out concerts despite her exhaustion and deteriorating health. Garland died of an accidental barbiturate overdose months after the tour ended in June 1969 in London. She was 47.
The film is an adaptation of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway play End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter.

Cole Sprouse has been grappling with the idea of celebrity and fame longer than most in the public eye as someone who started working when he was 8 months old.

The Simpsons mix dinosaur DNA with Cthulhu but the results are not tremendous on Treehouse of Horror Xxix.
This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons: Season 30 Episode 4
The horror of The Simpsons season 30 episode 4, "Treehouse Of Horror Xxix," is it is neither terrifying nor side-splitting. Even though the creatures in the opening sequence reveal their true selves after splitting themselves open from the sides.
The Simpsons answer the call of Cthulhu in the opening. Luckily it's a dinner bell. The family gets duped into vacationing in at a seaside paradise that is really a front for a cult. The family is offered up for sacrifice to H. P. Lovecraft's Leviathan-inspired creature of the ocean's depths. But Cthulhu and his followers don't know the depths of Homer's abdominal emptiness. We do, so do the Simpson family, who warn their captors the patriarch of the family hasn't had breakfast.

Alfonso Cuarón is a filmmaker of such up-front humanity, and such commandingly sensual technique, that when you watch “Roma,” his shimmering black-and-white neorealist slice of life about a middle-class family and its loyal domestic worker in Mexico City in the early ’70s, you get the feeling that every image — every emotion — is perfectly set in place. Cuarón shot and co-edited “Roma” himself, in addition to writing and directing it, and the movie is so naturalistic that it’s like a dramatized documentary. At the same time, Cuarón turns his camera-eye gaze into something heady and aestheticized. He dunks us, moment by moment, image by luminously composed image, into a panorama of the hurly-burly of Mexico City in 1970 and 1971 — the glinting squalor of the streets, the Americanized fragments of pop culture (Creedence vs. the Beatles!), the tatters of class war. He puts us in close quarters with his characters, but he...

Somehow, it is now late summer 2018. While the release of films like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Avengers: Infinity War seems long ago, they are represented in this latest rundown of books connected to the world cinema. But there is plenty else, including a classic from Paul Schrader, a juicy look at the Sumner Redstone empire, and a must-buy for fans of Clint Eastwood. Note that this summer also saw the release of David Lynch’s Room to Dream, a memoir co-written with journalist/critic Kristine McKenna. Nick Newman covered the insightful and surprisingly comprehensive book in June, and explains why Dream’s “enlightened restlessness” is so appropriate.

The billing is more than a little misleading. “Universal Soldier” cohorts Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren may be listed in the credits (and promoted in the advertising art) as co-stars of “Black Water,” but it’s up to Van Damme to do most of the damage in this routine VOD-centric action thriller set aboard a submarine employed as a CIA black site. Throughout most of the movie’s perceptibly padded running time, Lundgren’s character is incarcerated in a dank prison cell on the sub — next door to the one in which Van Damme’s character fleetingly cools his heels — where we periodically see him reading, exercising, meditating, and generally looking very Zen. To call this a cameo role would be overly generous. Truth to tell, Lundgren enjoys a greater percentage of screen time, and engages in slightly more rough stuff, in the punchy music video for Imagine Dragons’ “Believer.

Legion Season 3 is almost over. Check out the trailer for the penultimate episode of Marvel and FX's high-concept mutant origin story.
David Haller's struggle against the Shadow King and his own mind isn't over quite yet. FX has released the third season of Legion, giving us more mind-bending, psychedelic superhero whackiness to look forward to.
The show is a loose collaboration between prestige cable network FX and Marvel. Legion doesn't fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the TV universe, the comic universe, or really any other universe at all. It's entirely its own weird thing as envisioned by Fargo creator Noah Hawley. It just also happens to feature Marvel comics character David Haller known as “Legion” in the X-Men universe, who may be the most powerful mutant in the world, or just insane...or both.
Unfortunately, but perhaps unsurprisingly, the series will end...

It’s that time of year of again when we start scouring the internet for gift ideas. Luckily, Acorn media have served up another platter of top notch dramas for you to acquire this holiday season.
BBC One’s brilliantly clever 2013 drama Mayday comes to Acorn DVD on the 23 November. Starring Aiden Gillen (Batman: The Dark Knight Rises) it is full of more twists and turns than the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. The five part drama is based around a straightforward topic – the murder of a young woman. The events thereafter are handled in a rather unusual manner. There are four primary suspects but in the absence of a Marple or Poirot figure the audience are left to do the investigative work themselves.
Each of the suspects has an accuser but as the show progresses you began to wonder if the real villains are the accused or their accusers. Mi...

Acorn Media are providing some much needed relief to those of us who are still upset about the BBC’s decision to cancel Zen. The Brit-loving DVD distributors are giving a U.S. debut to the Sky crime drama Falcon. Ok, so it’s not set in Rome but Seville is a pretty good setting as it is a fascinating city steeped in history and culture. No, Rufus Sewell isn’t in it but it does feature Kiwi actor Marton Csokas, who I am told is equally popular with the ladies.
As with Zen, the producers of Falcon got their inspiration from a popular series of crime novels. Wisely or not, the producers of both shows decided that all or most of the characters should have decidedly British accents despite the fact that they are in Italy or Spain. Hayley Atwell in Restless. co. BBC
Grey Feeney
The BBC’s new two-part drama Restless is a complex tale about a Russian emigree in pre-war France who ends up becoming a British spy before assuming a false identity and retiring to lead a quiet life in the British Isles. Hayley Attwell starred as the reluctant spy Eva who was recruited to work for the British by a debonair agent named Lucas Romer (Rufus Sewell).
The war-time scenes involving Attwell and Sewell were excellent but the flash forward scenes involving the aging Eva (Charlotte Rampling) and her adult daughter (Michelle Dockery) were like a bucket of ice cold water being dumped on a blazing fire. Rampling was convincing as the aging spy whose paranoia had driven her to reveal the truth about her past to her daughter. Dockery on the other hand fell on the wrong side of the line that...

Rufus Sewell vowed to give up playing bad guys and cads, then found himself out of work for months. So now he's back – in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – as a 5,000-year-old bloodsucker
Three years ago, Rufus Sewell gave up bad guys for good. After an early career steaming up teatimes in Middlemarch and Cold Comfort Farm, he slipped, in his 30s, into a rut of rotters – cruel toffs on horseback in films such as A Knight's Tale, The Legend of Zorro and Tristan and Isolde. At 40, he renounced them for better men. Men with names like Tom Builder (from HBO's The Pillars of the Earth) and Dr Jacob Hood (police procedural Eleventh Hour), and Zen, the cool Italian detective from the Michael Dibdin books adapted for the BBC.
Next week Sewell, now 44, can be seen as "Adam, lead vampire" in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a 3D film from Timur Bekmambetov,...

Men with names like Tom Builder (from HBO's The Pillars of the Earth) and Dr Jacob Hood (police procedural Eleventh Hour), and Zen, the cool Italian detective from the Michael Dibdin books adapted for the BBC.

Italian actress Caterina Murino, who charmed Daniel Craig as James Bond back in 2006 in Casino Royale, has just landed the role to play a former Colombian presidential candidate. According to THR, Murino will play Ingrid Betancourt in the English language film In Search of Ingrid.
The film is based on two books by Betancourt’s former husband Juan Carlos Lecompete, which details “what happened when Betancourt, a senator in Colombia and at the time a candidate for president, was taken hostage by terrorists and held in a South American jungle from 2002 to 2008 before being rescued by Colombian security forces.” Lecompete will be played by popular Mexican actor and photographer Valentino Lanus. Lanus will also be producing the project, along with Peter Rawley and Robert Katz.
Betty Kaplan is set to direct, as well as write the screenplay. Kaplan has done several adaptation work in the past — her films Of Love and Shadows,...

True Blood has a new vampire in its midst — and I have a feeling she's going to be very popular.
That tuxedoed Italian beauty is Valentina Cervi, who's joining True Blood in Season 5 as a series regular. According to TV Line, Cervi will play Salome, "an ancient vampire who is a world class seductress and fiercely intelligent." She is also a tiny bit mad. And although she is quite powerful, she is able to hide her abilities when she wants.
If Cervi looks familiar to you, you're probably a fan of foreign language cinema. Her best-known role is as Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the world's first female painters whose work remains well known today, in the controversial French film, Artemisia. (She learned to speak French for the part.)
Americans may recognize her from Jane Campion's Portrait of a Lady, in which she played Pansy Osmond. More recently, she guest...
