Update with Meghan McCain statement: Meghan McCain says her family has not authorized a new, planned musical inspired by – and named after – her late father.
But considering that the in-development musical features fictionalized characters based on public figures, John McCain included, it’s unlikely producers need any such authorization. Deadline has reached out to a show spokesperson for comment.
In an exclusive statement to The Messenger, McCain said, “My family has not authorized it nor was aware of it. I was as surprised as everyone else to see the announcement.”
This morning, producers Quixote Productions and Max Fose announced an invitation-only industry reading later this week in New York of what they call a “provocative and zeitgeisty” new musical titled The Ghost of John McCain. The musical features a book by Scott Elmegreen and score by Drew Fornarola.
In their announcement, the producers describe the musical as “a unique psychological exploration of power,...

“We’re making incredible strides,” “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams told the crowd Thursday night at the Hrts Foundation Gala at the Beverly Hilton.
Williams spoke about the progress he sees on diversity, equity and inclusion issues in Hollywood during a a 15-minute Q&a with Odetta Watkins, president of the Hollywood Radio and Television Society and head of drama series for Amazon MGM Studios, held as part of the organization’s annual fundraiser. Williams, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2022 for “Take Me Out,” was feted by Hrts for his work as an actor, director, producer and activist.
“There’s been a letting in of new voices — a widening of the bottleneck,” Williams told Watkins, adding that creatives from under-represented backgrounds have gained authority and authorship of their stories. “We’re not tokenized,” he said. George C. Wolfe is one of the great storytellers of the stage and screen, which is why it was only fitting that the writer and director of theatrical and film productions was at last month’s Scad Savannah Film Festival to collect its Storyteller Award. Following a screening of his latest motion picture, Rustin — which tells the story of Bayard Rustin, the gay civil rights activist who organized the 1963 March on Washington, and is now streaming on Netflix — Wolfe joined yours truly in the Lucas Theatre to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.
Wolfe, 69, is known as a playwright for writing 1986’s The Colored Museum and co-writing 1992’s Jelly’s Last Jam. He also gained recognition as a theater director for the original Broadway productions of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Angels in America: Perestroika and a host of Broadway musicals, like 1996’s Bring in ’da Noise,...

“For All Mankind” Season 4 is nearly here. And a trailer that just played on the first day of New York Comic Con (where they’re also screening the first episode of the new season) gives us our first taste of what’s to come. Watch it above.
If you’ve never seen “For All Mankind” — created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi — it’s an alternate history tale of the space race. The first season was set during the race to the moon, with America training a group of female astronauts and Russia getting there first.
Each subsequent season has moved further away from actual history while still incorporating details from real life. And, crucially, each season is set a decade after the previous season, meaning that old-age makeup technology is constantly being put to the test. (Sometimes it works better than others.)

Co-founder and CEO of the Newport Beach Film Festival Gregg Schwenk muses that there are several reasons the fest, which will run Oct. 12-19 this year, has grown in popularity over the last 24 years. There are, of course, the movies: over 300 films this year, including about 100 features and over 200 shorts from countries all over the world. Some of the buzzy titles include Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers” and Todd Haynes’ “May December,” both looking to impact on the upcoming awards season. In addition, honors will be presented to several artists throughout the festival, including Artist of Distinction Patricia Clarkson, Legend Award recipient William Shatner and Icon Award honoree Eugenio Derbez.
And then there’s the location. “It’s hard to beat Newport Beach,” says Schwenk of the city south of Los Angeles, which includes gorgeous beaches and boat-filled harbors. “Our nature and beauty are world-renowned. And being only about an...

Jesse Williams has a history of playing heartthrobs in movies, from his debut as Leo in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and his breakout role as the ripped and charming plastic surgeon Jackson Avery to his latest role as Tobert in season three of "Only Murders in the Building." Life imitates art, because the former school teacher is a bonafide heartthrob in real life, too. But life imitates art in other ways, too. Just like his "Grey's Anatomy" character Jackson, Williams's love life has had its ups and downs.
Since Williams is a TV star, it's sometimes impossible to keep details about his relationships out of the press, like the case of his divorce from his partner of 13 years, Aryn Drake-Lee - or the extended custody battle that ensued over their two kids afterward. Actually, these types of "leaks" happen to Williams a lot in life, and not just...

The contest for Best Play Revival at this year’s Tony Awards is shaping up to be a true nail-biter, even in the nominations round of voting. Five of the eligible productions — “A Doll’s House,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Ohio State Murders,” “The Piano Lesson,” and “Topdog/Underdog” — all opened to excellent reviews, while a sixth contender, “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window,” just announced its opening on the last day of eligibility.
Of these six productions, four will earn nominations. Four of the six have also already closed, which would seem to give an advantage to “A Doll’s House” and “Sidney Brustein’s Window,” both of which will run through the Tony voting period. Do those two productions thus have an advantage in this top race? How often does a shuttered production actually win Best Revival?
The raw numbers alone clearly demonstrate that shows that are running through...

“All of our scotch whiskey has a color, this one is Swiss Gold,” said the dapper man pouring small drams during Thursday’s tasting for Macallan’s newest offering, The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary release, a series of six bottles — one to signify each decade of the Bond franchise — and priced at a very on the nose $1,007. The evening went down at the historic 1926 Lloyd Wright-designed landmark, the Sowden House, in the heart of Los Feliz, which has been seen in Curtis Hansen’s L.A. Confidential and Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator.
The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary sold in an edition of 1,000 bottles for each decade and will be divided up between New York, Miami and Los Angeles markets and released one per month starting now. Decade 1, an homage to the 1960s Sean Connery-era Bond, features a package design that includes production sketches from 1964’s Goldfinger,...

Model and TV personality Christine McGuinness has discussed the sexual abuse she suffered as a child in her new documentary, Unmasking My Autism.
For the show, which airs on BBC One on Wednesday 15 March, McGuinness spoke to specialists, who told her that many women with autism have experienced domestic or sexual violence in relationships.
“I experienced that and I didn’t speak up, and I wonder if I never said it because I was autistic,” McGuinness, who was diagnosed with the condition in 2021, said. “Was it me? Would a neurotypical woman have said something? Is it my fault? How did I find myself there? All of those questions.
“It’s something I experienced when I was a teenager, and then when I met my husband [Take Me Out presenter Paddy McGuinness], that was a time where I felt very safe and I wonder that’s why I stayed in that relationship for 15 years.

The pearl clutchers who worried that Game of Thrones was rotting the brains of adults and corrupting the minds of children, were concerned about two things: sex and violence.
Well, after last week’s episode of House of the Dragon ended with a man cutting another in two as if he were halving a sandwich, this latest chapter of Sky’s Thrones prequel brings the sex. Warning for viewers: do not watch this episode with a family member.

People often talk about second album syndrome, and the pressures that follow a great first record. Often it can overshadow conversation around the debut itself: “Brilliant album… shame about the second one.”
But while it’s true that many an artist has struggled to meet expectations after a triumphant beginning, it shouldn’t take away from the achievements made on those first records. They serve as statements of intent and have the power to change or reshape the industry, inspire fellow musicians, and drive essential conversation about our understanding of music.
Whether it’s the rock on The Strokes’ much-hyped 2001 album Is This It or the rap prowess of Notorious Big on Ready to Die, introducing a genre to the rest of the world via Daft Punk’s Homework or creating a new one entirely with Black Sabbath – debut albums can take a previously unknown artist and lift them up to global adulation.

Producers of the show Take Me Out, which had an acclaimed revival run in Spring of 2022, have announced that it will be heading to the Schoenfeld Theater with Jesse Williams and Jesse Tyler Ferguson returning to their prior roles.
Williams played baseball player Darren Lemming and Ferguson was accountant Mason Marzac who takes a liking to baseball after Lemming comes out as gay. Much of the play takes place between Lemming and his teammates in the locker room and dealing with the reactions to his reveal, but it also shows occasional encounters with Marzac and other scenes.
It was first written by Richard Greenberg and debuted at the Walter Kerr Theater in 2003 and won the Tony for Best Play that year. The revival is directed by Scott Ellis, who recently directed the Tootsie musical in 2019 as well as the acclaimed 2014 revival of The Elephant Man starring Bradley Cooper.

Tony winner Jesse Tyler Ferguson and nominee Jesse Williams are suiting up again as stars of the baseball-themed Take Me Out, which is set to return to Broadway in the fall. The hit revival will re-take the field October 27 at the Schoenfeld Theatre for 14 weeks, it was revealed today.
Written by Richard Greenberg and directed by Scott Ellis, Take Me Out bowed in the spring and went on to glove Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Play and Best Featured Actor for Ferguson. The show won widespread critical acclaim — and some unwanted headlines when an audience member recorded and posted on social media some nude scenes.

Well, Tatiana Maslany has some big news: she's married! During her Aug. 11 appearance on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," the "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" star revealed she secretly wed boyfriend Brendan Hines. "My actual big news: I got married," Maslany said to the audience. "Nobody knows, so don't tell anyone," she added jokingly.
Maslany shared that she and her "wonderful guy" decided to keep their wedding news under wraps because "there are certain things you want to keep private." "But we felt like you were the right person to tell it to," she told Colbert. Maslany didn't reveal when the couple tied the knot, but of their ceremony, she said that they kept it small due to the pandemic. "It went very well. It was a very chill day," she said, also adding that her and Hines's dog Earl served as the ring bearer.

I caught up with Ferguson, who was set to star opposite Jesse Williams and Patrick J. Adams on Broadway in “Take Me Out...

Joe Mantello, the “Hollywood” actor and director of “The Boys in the Band,” is the model for one of four magazine covers for the Out100, Out magazine’s annual list of today’s most influential LGBTQ+ figures, TheWrap can exclusively share.
Mantello fronts the film edition of the magazine, which will also profile other creators and performers like actress Brigette Lundy-Paine, actress and writer Jen Richards, documentary filmmakers P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes, animator Steven Clay Hunter and “Antebellum” filmmakers Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz.
“Joe Mantello’s breathtaking performance in ‘Hollywood’ moved me unlike any performance I’ve seen this year,” Out’s editor in chief David Artavia said in a statement. “A man of many hats, Joe’s work in theater as both an actor and a director is timeless and continues to exist at the pulse point of many generations. With Broadway’s shut down at least until June, some producers who had been hoping to open shows this spring are re-setting their sights on fall or even 2022, while others have announced no plans whatsoever.
The latest to announce a new schedule is Lincoln Center Theater’s much anticipated production of Flying Over Sunset, a new musical with book and direction by James Lapine, music by Tom Kitt, lyrics by Michael Korie, and choreography by Michelle Dorrance. The production, along with Lincoln Center’s Off Broadway production of new opera Intimate Apparel, has now set a target opening of fall 2021.
The Broadway League announced Friday that all Broadway producers would now refund tickets through May 30, 2021, a four-month extension from the previous January target. Further extensions are possible, some say even likely.

U.K. broadcasting union Bectu has warned about the impact coronavirus could have on TV and film freelancers’ livelihoods.
The union has been fielding calls from freelance workers keen for information on whether they are still entitled to payment even if their work is canceled because of coronavirus.
The government advises that people who have been in close contact with an infected person should self-isolate for 14 days.
Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said: “Freelancers should not be missing out on pay because of the coronavirus.
“This could hit Bectu’s freelance members particularly hard. Unlike employees who receive contractual, or Statutory Sick Pay, many of these workers will lose thousands of pounds. We would urge engagers to accept responsibility for continued payment to keep potential infectors at home for 14 days.”
Bectu said some of its union members have lost “substantial pieces of work” after a crew member working on a...

Grey's Anatomy said goodbye to Justin Chambers' Alex Karev (sort of), but fans don't have to worry about another exit…yet. Jesse Williams, Jackson Avery on the show since season six, will make his Broadway debut in the revival of Take Me Out in the spring of 2020. But that doesn't mean Williams is leaving the show or Jackson is leaving Grey Sloan Memorial. "I've known since the beginning of the season and I've been able to plan [Jackson]'s storyline [accordingly]," executive producer Krista Vernoff told TVLine about any possible scheduling conflicts. "Jesse is able to fly back one day a week; we're just making it work [because] this was important to...

Is another Grey’s Anatomy doc about to go Awol?
With Jesse Williams set to make his Broadway debut in early April — in a revival of Richard Greenberg’s Tony-winning play Take Me Out — conventional wisdom suggests that viewers will be seeing less of his character, Dr. Jackson Avery, come spring. After all, Grey’s will still be in production on Season 16 when Take Me Out begins previews on April, 2. (And that’s not accounting for rehearsals, which will likely put Williams in New York well before then).

Manhattan Theatre Club’s world premiere of Richard Greenberg’s The Perplexed has completed its cast with Gregg Edelman and Eric William Morris.
With previews at the major Off Broadway venue set to begin Feb. 11 and opening March 3, Edelman and Morris join the previously announced cast of Patrick Breen, Margaret Colin, Tess Frazer, Anna Itty, Ilana Levine, Zane Pais, Jd Taylor and Frank Wood.
To be directed by Mtc Artistic Director Lynne Meadow, the new work from the Take Me Out playwright follows two families whose lives have been tumultuously intertwined for decades.
The synopsis: The families gather in the massive library of a Fifth Avenue apartment to celebrate the nuptials of their children. Nothing goes smoothly and as the big moment approaches, the burning question is: can everyone put aside long-smoldering jealousies and deep-seated grudges and just get through the ceremony?...
