“The Good Wife” introduced Carrie Preston‘s Elsbeth Tascioni back in 2010. She was so popular with fans that she also featured in the spin-off show “The Good Fight.” Now Preston and Elsbeth take center stage in the brand new spin-off “Elsbeth.”
CBS’ hit drama series follows Elsbeth as she carries out work as an unconventional attorney and helps the NYPD catch criminals with her astute observations. Preston was excellent in her guest role in “The Good Wife” but she is even better here as the main course, as critics have noted.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Preston knows the exact pitch at which to play Elsbeth. Never grating yet always pesky, her unrelenting positivity (and general relentlessness) would undoubtedly get old, fast, in real life. Cops and criminals alike are exhausted by her, but audiences can more easily appreciate her dogged demeanor because a) we know she’s on the right track,...

Jennifer Aniston delivered another star-powered performance in the new season of Apple TV’s flagship series, “The Morning Show.” The series follows the behind-the-scenes drama of a morning TV show in the US, with co-anchors Alex Levy (Aniston) and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) at the center of events.
The latest season (season three) depicts Alex quite literally heading into space while she tussles with Jon Hamm‘s tech mogul as a media merger for her show’s network, Uba, bubbles away. Aniston proved herself a master of comedy with “Friends” and here shows, once again, that she has the dramatic acting chops to equal her comedic skills. Aniston is captivating every time she’s on-screen and it’s a delight to see her in one of the meatiest roles of her career, as noted by critics.

We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

Juliette Binoche has racked up a slew of awards for her film work, including both an Oscar and a BAFTA for her supporting turn in the historical drama “The English Patient.” Now she is in line to win an Emmy for her leading role in another historical epic — Apple TV’s “The New Look.”
In this acclaimed drama, she portrays the iconic French fashion designer Coco Chanel who is threatened by the up-and-coming Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) in post-wwii Paris. Binoche delivers a complex, carefully curated performance that has been celebrated by critics as a shining light in this lush new series.
Joyce Slaton (Common Sense Media) noted: “Juliette Binoche and Ben Mendelsohn are excellent in their roles as the conflicted Chanel and Dior, both of whom, history remembers, wound up collaborating with and/or designing for Nazi forces in Nazi-occupied France… Chanel is a more complicated figure, and yet...

Kathy Bates is returning to network television in another legal series. The actress previously starred in Harry's Law, a two-season comedy-drama on NBC. This time around, she'll be at the center of Matlock, a reboot of the Andy Griffth drama that ran for nine seasons.
The new version of Matlock stars Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years. She decides to rejoin the workforce at a prestigious law firm, where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases.
Matty is assigned to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker with a thirst for justice. Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter), the son of the head of the firm, is intrigued by Matty and her clever skills. As Matty endeavors to establish...

“The Crown” cast’s 2021 sweep of the major drama acting Emmy categories will be hard for any show to ever replicate, but those who have inherited their regal roles are going to make a go of it this year. Judging by Gold Derby’s odds, the Netflix series’ best chance at a victory for its fifth season lies with Imelda Staunton, who is looking to continue the Emmy-winning trend in Best Drama Actress for her take on Queen Elizabeth II, just like Claire Foy (2018) and Olivia Colman (2021). Since voters responded well when the part first changed hands, it would make perfect sense for them to show the same love toward the show’s third and final headliner.
The penultimate season of “The Crown,” which originally streamed last November, covers a six-year period in the reign of the aforementioned queen and focuses on the challenges she faces as the third millennium approaches.

On the NBC comedy Cheers, George Wendt often stole the show as Norm. Norm was Cheers’ most loyal regular. Every episode when he entered the whole bar shouted his name, and he had a different one liner for every entrance. Cheers ended in 1993 after 11 seasons and Wendt has been busy ever since.

How George Wendt got the role of Norm on ‘Cheers’
After some small roles in films like Bronco Billy and My Bodyguard, and a deleted scene from Somewhere in Time, Wendt moved to Los Angeles in 1980. Don't let the cancellation of Hulu's "Reboot" fool you — resurrecting old TV series from the dead is still all the rage. "That '70s Show," "The Wonder Years," "Perry Mason," and "DuckTales," among others, have all found their way back to our screens. So I guess it was only a matter of time before someone had the grand idea to call upon everyone's small-town, folksy lawyer. CBS has ordered a return to the courtroom in the form of a "Matlock" robot. Variety reports that a pilot from writer and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman ("Jane The Virgin" creator) is in the works.
The original "Matlock," created by Dean Hargrove, aired from 1986 to 1992 with Andy Griffith playing the titular lawyer for the show's nine-season run. The series follows Ben Matlock, a very expensive criminal defense attorney with a penchant for solving murders. But unlike the gruff, crime-solving individual who usually leads these weekly murder stories,...

The decline in broadcast pilots continues. CBS has ordered its fewest drama pilots ever in a pilot season: two. Also part of a trend, both are based on IP from established auspices and big-name talent already attached — Robert and Michelle King’s Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston, a police procedural spinoff of the Kings’ The Good Wife/Good Fight universe, and Matlock, a gender-swap reboot of the classic legal drama starring Kathy Bates, from Jennie Snyder Urman and Eric Christian Olsen.
Along with the two pilot orders for the 2023-24 season, CBS also ordered writers rooms for two medical drama projects — The Pact, from writer Marcus Dalzine and the NAACP/CBS Studios production venture; and Watson, from Craig Sweeny and Kapital — which are being put on track for potential straight-to-series orders targeting the following 2024-2025 season.

After scoring her first Emmy win in a lead acting category last year, Jean Smart returns to the Emmy race for Season 2 of HBO Max’s “Hacks.” Her portrayal of Deborah Vance is as biting as ever, as the seasoned comic leaves the casinos of Las Vegas behind for life on the road. Plopping Vance into a fancy tour bus that stops all over the country provides ample opportunity for introspection from this oft-jaded star, in addition to constantly changing scenery. This mix of humor and heart could be just the right formula to help the actress land back-to-back Emmy wins.

For over four decades, character actor Christopher McDonald has maintained a reputation as a reliable portrayer of smarmy scoundrels, with his quintessential role being that of Shooter McGavin in 1996’s “Happy Gilmore.” His hundreds of film and TV projects have allowed him to both expand his range and perfect the practice of mining nuggets of humanity from his usually roguish characters. Now, he has finally caught the attention of Emmy voters in the Best Comedy Guest Actor category for the HBO Max comedy series “Hacks.”
McDonald has appeared in 11 “Hacks” episodes as Marty Ghilain, the CEO of the fictional Palmetto casino in Las Vegas. It’s hard to imagine the world of entertainment without Jean Smart. With “Hacks” and “Mare of Easttown” bringing her back to the forefront in the recent years, some call it a Jean Smart renaissance — but that’s not really the case. A Traction and Arclight Films production, Big Nickel is produced by Traction’s Jason Tamasco and Zak Kristofek. Executive producers include Arclight Films’ Gary Hamilton, Ryan Hamilton and Ying Ye.

For years, TV networks faced criticism over their obsession with young viewers, which puts a premium on series with thirty- or forty-something leads. That obsession led to the demise of series like Harry’s Law, headlined by then-sixtysomething Kathy Bates, which was canceled by NBC despite being the network’s most watched drama series.
Gradually, with the rising importance of digital viewing where eyeballs are eyeballs, networks’ laser focus on adults 18-49 has been softening. And streaming platforms have started to specifically target older audiences with shows like Grace and Frankie.

Sitting down to interview Bridget Everett and Danielle Macdonald, it would have been too easy to forget to turn on the recorder. Everett, an icon on the New York City alt-cabaret scene and protégée of sorts to Amy Schumer, arrives first and asks if it would be Ok to let Poppy, her Pomeranian and an Instagram star in her own right, out of her carrier during our time. (Everett's necklace says "Poppy" in gold cursive.) We're deep into sharing our rescue dogs' obsessive-compulsive behaviors when Macdonald, an Aussie actress who's had bit roles on American Horror Story and Glee, sidles up.
The 26-year-old is still wearing her high heels after many hours of press junketing at Hotel Polomar in West Hollywood, which Everett commends her for. (She'd already swapped her own for a pair of pink flip-flops.) Talk of heels turns to talk of drag and, before long, Macdonald and I realize we both played in the same...

Just hours ahead of its move to Thursday, "The Blacklist" has been assured its performance in the new time period won't actually matter. The James Spader thriller was one of five dramas earning renewals from NBC on Thursday (February 5) morning. Joining "Blacklist" on the renewal heap are "Grimm" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Last year, if you'll recall, the last jewel in Dick Wolf's "Law & Order" crown went down to the wire with negotiations, but fans of the drama won't have to sweat out that Season 17 news. And speaking of Dick Wolf, just as news is beginning to burble about a "Chicago Medical" spinoff, both "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Pd" are going to be back for their fourth and third seasons respectively. "The creative vision of the executive producers who’ve guided these outstanding dramas has been nothing short of incredible," blurbs Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. "We...

With temperatures dropping into the negatives across the U.S. today, it seems appropriate to get a bit of casting news for TV's most snow-friendly show. FX announced today the rest of its cast for "Fargo" Season 2. Ted Danson ("Cheers," "Bored to Death"), Patrick Wilson ("Angels in America," "A Gifted Man") and Jean Smart ("Harry's Law," "Samantha Who") are all set to join the previously announced stars Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons in the second season of Noah Hawley's anthology series. Wilson is set to take over the role of Lou Solverson — previously played by Keith Carradine — in the '70s set period story. Wilson's Solverson is a Navy veteran four years back from Vietnam, now living a clean-cut life in Minnesota as a state patrolman. Danson will play's Lou's father-in-law Hank Larsson, the Sheriff of Rock County, Minnesota. Smart, meanwhile, may have the juiciest role of the bunch.

So you spend your morning at temple for Rosh Hashanah and you miss Fast National ratings and then you pull up Final Live+Same Day ratings for Wednesday, September 24 and... Stop it with the "Mysteries of Laura," America! Although the Debra Messing dramedy took a drop from last week's post-"Agt" sneak among young viewers, it still drew over 10 million viewers in its first Wednesday 8 p.m. airing, which is a success of almost mind-boggling magnitude. It's such a big success that it thoroughly distracts me from nearly all of Wednesday's other notables, which include a terrific premiere for "Black-ish," an impressively consistent return for the new season of "Survivor" and a solid time period transfer for "The Goldbergs." Things weren't all entirely positive. "Modern Family" and "The Middle" were both down from last year's premieres, while "Red Band Society" remains unable to attract an audience beyond young female viewers.

Los Angeles - If you ever need more evidence that Katy Bates is a good egg all you need to do is listen to her comments to the assembled press after she won the supporting actress in a miniseries or movie Emmy Award Monday night. Bates is an Oscar winner, a two-time Golden Globe recipient, a two-time SAG Awards winner and, now, a two-time Emmy winner. And, yet, she's always humble and simply nothing like the iconic role in "Misery" that made her a star. The 66-year-old actress admitted she was expecting at least two other people to win and was "hoping" either of her "American Horror Story: Coven" co-stars, Frances Conroy or Angela Bassett, took home the honor. Instead, after upsetting presumed winner Julia Roberts, Bates earned another statue for her mantle. She says she shared this win with her "Coven" crew because she'd never seen one "work such long hours and long days.

TV hall of famer David E. Kelley has created shows that have won 38 Emmys for acting spread out among 30 different performers. While the last of these wins was three years ago (Paul McCrane for a guest spot on the drama "Harry's Law"), Kelley's new comedy series “The Crazy Ones” could break that drought with three-time Emmy champ Brad Garrett ("Everybody Loves Raymond," 2002, 2003, 2005) a strong contender for his recurring role as Gordon Lewis, the authoritative, business-minded executive of the advertising agency at the heart of the series. Garrett has proven to be a worthy foil to Robin Williams’ character Simon Roberts, the eccentric leader of the creative team. As the office curmudgeon, Lewis makes every attempt to play by the book, but often succumbs to the frequent attempts by the free spirits in the creative department to bend and break the rules. -Break- While Garrett has appeared in three episode...

Don't expect Kathy Bates to be popping up on NBC anytime in the near future.
The Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress stars on FX's "American Horror Story: Coven" this fall. At the show's TCA press tour session Friday (Aug. 2), she was asked if it took a show like "Ahs" to bring her back to TV after the way her last series ended.
That was "Harry's Law," which was canceled last year after two seasons. It had pretty strong total-audience numbers (8.8 million viewers) but was among NBC's lowest-ranking shows in the 18-49 demographic, which is the network's priority.
Bates did not shy away from criticizing that way of thinking.
"I think they treated us like s***," she says. "They disrespected us and our 7 to 11 million viewers, and they're getting what they deserve."
"Ahs: Coven" is scheduled to premiere in October on FX.

After NBC canceled "Harry's Law," Kathy Bates was reluctant to return to television, the actress admitted during the "American Horror Story: Coven" panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
"Harry's Law" was considered a bubble show because it scored a mere 0.8 in the coveted adults 18-49 demo, but its overall ratings were healthy -- especially by NBC standards -- always pulling in over 7 million viewers. Because of this, its cancellation came as a shock to many fans -- and Bates herself.

I wasn't gonna say anything about it, but who cares?...

Update: Salesmen have a saying, "Always ask for the order." That's exactly what Blake Cooper did to get the role of Chuck in The Maze Runner. The young actor did the digital equivalent of raising and waving his hand in the air. He tweeted the film's director Wes Ball to let make him aware that he wanted the role - and it worked! Cooper doesn't have too many credits, although plays a speech student in Parental Guidance. Still, he had the look and it turns out, the chops, so he got the job.
Other new hires are Anl Ameen ("Harry's Law") as Alby, Kaya Scodelario (Clash of the Titans) as Teresa, Ki Hong Lee ("The Nine Lives of Chloe King") as Minho.
April 19, 2013 - "Teen Wolf" star Dylan O'Brien will play Thomas in The Maze Runner, one of the boys who wakes up in the maze with his memory wiped clean.
