One of the big surprises at this year’s National Television Awards was the Special Recognition prize given to David Tennant, who was caught completely off-guard by glowing tributes from friends and family.
But hang on, isn’t the sprightliest of former Time Lords a bit young to be offered such a weighty accolade? Isn’t he just that good-looking bloke from Doctor Who and Broadchurch?
“Far from it!” is the answer that’s going to be shouted loud and clear in this article, which gives ten compelling, bite-size reasons by way of explanation. It’ll show how Mr Tennant’s contribution to the visual arts extends beyond mere “housewives favourite” status and stint as Dalek trumper-in-chief, examining his versatility, his passions and of course his sheer talent for making the nation sit up and take notice.
There’s a lot more to this chap than meets the eye...

David Tennant has advised that it will be "at least 10 years" before he would consider returning to Doctor Who again.
Tennant spoke to Digital Spy at last night's (January 21) National Television Awards, where he was given the Special Recognition Award.
Having returned to Doctor Who in 2013 for the 50th anniversary special, the star admitted that fans should not expected to see his Tenth Doctor opposite Peter Capaldi's Time Lord any time soon.
"I think you have to ration these things," he said. "It's probably got to be at least 10 years before that happens again, I think."
Though asking for Broadchurch spoilers was strictly forbidden, Tennant also spoke to DS about the ITV thriller's success, the "ubiquity" of Doctor Who and whether the rumours linking him to a guest part on Us series Hannibal are true.

EastEnders star Ben Hardy stayed coy at the National Television Awards last night (January 21) when quizzed about reports linking him to the next X-Men film.
Back in November, it was claimed that Hardy is being lined up to play a young Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse.
News of Hardy pursuing other roles soon led to EastEnders bosses confirming that he will be bowing out as Walford's Peter Beale at the end of his current contract.
Speaking to reporters including Digital Spy backstage at the NTAs last night, Hardy was asked to confirm whether he will indeed be part of the next X-Men project.
He laughed: "Er, sorry? Oh well, that's the rumour. Nothing guaranteed though."
His on-screen father Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) joked: "If he is, I want tickets for the premiere!"

It seems Simon Cowell can't keep his hands off Louis Walsh, after the tactile duo were spotted leaving The Arts Club in London last night (March 11).
The 54-year-old music mogul affectionately rubbed Walsh's chin before playfully tugging on his ear as though the Irish manager were his newborn baby Eric or pet dogs Squiddly and Diddly.
The pair have been firm friends since before Cowell created The X Factor ten years ago, and while we anticipate Cowell and Cheryl Cole's return to the UK show, we still await confirmation of Walsh's future on the panel.
From silly hand gagging to faux strangling, we celebrate and cherish the duo's decade-long brotherly love affair below:

From Purdey to Patsy, Joanna Lumley has had her fair share of plum roles. But the one she's most proud of is as a champion for social justice. Lucy Siegle meets the Observer Ethical Awards' 2013 national campaigner of the year
Joanna Lumley treats the lecture hall of the Royal Geographical Society (Rgs) with a charming degree of reverence. Walking past the hallowed Ondaatje Theatre, which has hosted talks by famous scientists and explorers since 1930, we pop in to pay our respects. Lumley, a fellow of the Rgs herself, gave a lecture here on her return from a trip to Bhutan in 2008. "Terrifying," she says in a stage whisper. "Imagine the people, the explorers, the brains that have been associated with this organisation. Shackleton, for example."
Some 35 years before Lumley took to the lectern, her grandmother also addressed the Rgs. She was Danish but born in New Zealand and married Lumley's Scottish grandfather in Rangoon.
