[Disclaimer: This editorial, which will explore how Lucasfilm is aping its sibling, Marvel Studios, with its new approach towards Star Wars, will contain *Spoilers* for Rogue One]
Something that Jammer and I have been railing against on the Los Fanboys Podcast for months now is how seemingly safe Lucasfilm is playing it when it comes to its Star Wars Story spinoff movies. Shortly after George Lucas sold Lucasfilm (and, in turn, the Star Wars and Indiana Jones IPs) to Disney, fans around the world became intrigued by the direction that the Mouse House was going to take his far, far away galaxy. It was announced that, in addition to a new trilogy, we'd be getting standalone films set within the Star Wars universe that don't have to do with the core Episodic Saga.
The promise of that was tantalizing. After all, Lucas created such a vast and wide open world, with such a rich history, that the storytelling possibilities are seemingly endless. You need not look further than the shelves at your local bookstore (assuming any of...

Back in early 2011, horror fan-site juggernaut Bloody Disgusting took a stand for independent and foreign genre lore by partnering with The Collective and AMC Theaters, establishing distribution company Bloody Disgusting Selects. Their purpose? To hand-pick often glanced over horror gems which get lost in the mainstream remake shuffle, and grant those deemed worthy of proper theatrical and Video On Demand releases exposure.
As an avid follower and member of “The Infected” (the site’s online community), Bloody Disgusting Selects seemed like a gleaming beacon of hope in the world of inventive, creative, and one-of-a-kind horror experiences. Selected by site staffers and genre enthusiast super fans sharing a common love for skin crawling madness, I made it my mission not to skip a single feature. Now, with their first ten tales of terror rated and reviewed, I thought I’d touch upon Bloody Disgusting’s foray into film distribution and determine the company’s future.

The Bloody Disgusting Selects series of horror films has thus far proven a delight for horror fans looking for something different from the typical direct-to-dvd garbage that floods retail shelves. Features like YellowBrickRoad, Rammbock, and Phase 7 have taken new spins on familiar themes and often with remarkably fun results. Of them, Phase 7 deserves the most credit for taking a compound first-person-shooter video game model and turning it into a comical Sci-Fi thriller that looks closer at the breakdown of civility when a bunch of people are sequestered to a small space. Hellacious Acres, the newest entry in the Bloody Disgusting series, attempts to find a similar video game Sci-Fi horror vein, but its unwieldy runtime and unfortunately sparse action might spoil any appreciation fans might have for its masterful construction of atmosphere and dark, somber comedy.

I’ve started and stopped, deleted, began from scratch, it must be a year end list. I let these things stress me out far more than I should. I have a real problem with ranking films. I feel as, every film I watch, even some bad ones, are enjoyed at different levels, for different reasons. It seems wrong to me to slap an arbitrary number next to it. How do I rank my enjoyment? Especially if it’s due to different factors? Well, the answer is, I don’t. I’m going to list for you, 10 films of 2011 that I feel should be seen. Please don’t take it as an extensive list, as there are still Far too many flicks that were released at some capacity during the year that I gotten around to yet. Keep in mind that that there is no ranking involved. Movies are listed as they come to me,...

Super, Trespass, Melancholia, Quarantine 2: Terminal, Black Death, We Are What We Are, Red State, Kidnapped, Rammbock: Berlin Undead, Phase 7 (Fase 7), Hobo With A Shotgun, The Shrine, Burke & Hare, Cold Fish, Atrocious, The Last Circus, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil , Outcast, The Pack (La Meute), The Human Centipede Part 2: Full Sequence, Chillerama. What do those films have in common? Theyre horror films (or films with enough intensity, gumption and violence for tertiary association) that incorporated Video On Demand into their distribution models in a major way this year. That means there's a lot going on here - and it affects you. Hit the jump to check it out and contribute your opinions in the comments.

Carole Jahme explores the far-side of science fiction at Oktoberfest, including a preview of Another Earth
This year has seen a bumper crop of big-screen sci-fi, including Apollo 18, Paul and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with Contagion and In Time soon to be released. Science fiction grosses millions of dollars at the box office, but where do the true aficionados go to see more refined, unusual sci-fi offerings?
Sci-Fi-London's Oktoberfest gives an opportunity for smaller, cult, and possibly more intelligent sci-fi and fantasy films to be viewed on the big screen. It is curated by ebullient sci-fi enthusiast Louis Savy, who founded the festival 10 years ago. To encourage new filmmakers, every year he organises a "48-hour film challenge" in which teams compete to create a sci-fi film in just two days – Gareth Edwards, director of the excellent Monsters started his film career here.

Seemingly created by a gamer who wanted to see his post-apocalyptic fantasies spawned from first person shooters come to life, Phase 7 plays out with an air of mocking nonchalance as an epidemic unfolds and the residents of an apartment complex gradually begin to pick one another off in a battle for survival. Writer and Director Nicolas Goldbart has got a firm grasp of what elevates good horror and thriller films above the rest: the deterioration of the human psyche and of social norms when death looms right around the corner. The epidemic isn’t turning people into zombies and in fact its symptoms are so utterly vague as to just be influenza, but that’s not the real purpose for it, it’s just a device to rationalize quarantining 16 new neighbors and a maid (or 13 people and a maid if the Chinese family isn’t home) inside a small...

Need to add some new horror movies into your collection? October 4, 2011 was not the best Tuesday DVD and Blu-ray release day for horror fans but does offer a few good picks. If you like classic horror movies you will be happy to see the Alfred Hitchcock releases. You can now pick up Dead Alive which is known as one of the goriest horror films on Blu-Ray to get all the bloody details. If you were holding out for The Walking Dead Season 1 special edition it is now available . Scream 4 and Phase 7 would make a great collection for almost any horror fan.

After a several month hiatus — way over half a year — I finally returned to updating Bad Lit’s Underground Film Timeline project, a comprehensive, chronological survey of significant events and films in underground film history. You can start navigating the Timeline here.
Phase 7 of the Timeline involved adding events and films found in P. Adams Sitney‘s landmark book Visionary Film: the American Avant-Garde 1943-2000. As you can tell from the title, I used the 3rd and most recent version of the book.
Originally published in 1974, Visionary Film was the first serious critical survey of the modern underground film movement. Yes, Sheldon Renan’s An Introduction to the American Underground Film had preceded it in 1967, but that offered more of a straight history than analysis. And despite the title of Parker Tyler’s Underground Film: A Critical History being published in 1970, that book is more of an angry polemical rant than a serious survey.

Bloody Disgusting Select and The Collective have two releases coming just in time for Halloween. The first is Argentinian movie Phase 7 and you can check out Jesse Bartel’s review of it here, with the second being the rather good Mexican found footage flick Atrocious. Phase 7 will hit DVD on October 4th and Atrocious on the 25th, which just so happens to be 4 days after the behemoth that is Paranormal Activity 3 hits theaters. Both of these movies have our seal of approval and are well worth checking out.

Sci-fi-london has unveiled details of the the line-up for its Oktoberfest 2011, which is this year moving from London's West End to Camden Town.
Screenings, special events, workshops and celebrations take place between October 7 and 9 at the Odeon Camden, Camden Head and the new Cyber Market.
Among the highlights, the UK premiere of Love, the first feature-length movie from American rock band Angels & Airwaves, will be held at the Odeon Camden at 7.30pm on Sunday, October 9.
Described as a sci-fi/western/arthouse hybrid and directed by William Eubank, it's driven by the band's music and explores the fundamental human need for connection and the limitless power of hope.
It sees a lone astronaut aboard the International Space Station becomes stranded in orbit when he loses contact with Earth. As time passes and life-support systems dwindle, he battles to maintain his sanity - and simply stay alive. His world is a claustrophobic and lonely existence,...

The B-Movie Underground and Trash Film Festival brings their unique collection of international sleaze on Sept. 7-11 in the city of Breda in the Netherlands. Violence, gore, general grossness and perversion are, once again, near and dear to the heart of this fun fest.

Bd Selects has done it again by picking up a title that’s guaranteed to find an audience but may not have the appreciation of the entire community. I’ve really liked everything that Bloody Disgusting has picked up so far (except YellowBrickRoad), each title is different and more unique than whats normally getting put on the market. That’s not to say there aren’t any problems with the films, but as a whole, they’ve really left an impression on me.
Enter Phase 7, an Argentinian sci-fi film that plays closely to similar films before it, yet takes another route all together. The story focuses on the characters of Coco and Pipi who are moving into a new apartment, Pipi is seven months pregnant. Coming on the heels of Phase 7 in Bloody Disgusting’s AMC Horrorfest, Cold Fish doesn’t feel like a typical horror at first and instead feels like a nod to Eugene Ionesco’s “The Lesson” with its overbearing host played by Denden and the unsuspecting fish salesmen, Mitsuru Fukikoshi, drawn into his world of unexpected violence and deceit. For the first 30 minutes, there’s something mesmerizing about Denden’s performance and Cold Fish seems like it could go just about anywhere, but eventually the thriller elements take the helm and the film explodes into a rather bloody mess representative of the main characters forever altered mental state. Cold Fish could have had a more satisfying payoff according to the promise of the earlier elements, though what we get still represents a solid outing in the thriller genre.

Following hot on the heels of Rammbock, Phase 7, YellowBrickRoad and Cold Fish in the Bloody Disgusting Selects/The Collective/AMC releases is Atrocious from director Fernando Barreda Luna. It’s the latest in a growing line of found footage style flicks, so that’s either going to float your boat or it isn’t. I caught the preview for this Spanish language flick a few months back and liked what I saw, so hopefully the movie itself will deliver.
Atrocious premiered internationally at the 43rd Sitges International Film
Festival and then at Slamdance this past January 2011, garnering a tide of
online buzz and quick comparisons to 2008′s Paranormal Activity.
Atrocious is a gruesome, mind-bending thriller shot in a style reminiscent
of The Blair Witch Project. The horror film excerpts found footage from a
film reel recovered by Spanish police, documenting a family of five
discovering the truth behind a dangerous urban legend.

New to Theatres This Weekend: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Winnie the Pooh, Tabloid
There probably isn't much question as to what everyone will be watching this weekend with the final Harry Potter film is poised to be the biggest movie of the summer and is sitting at an astonishing 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, if you happen to be among the minority who lost interest in teenage wizards long ago, there are a few other alternatives including Disney's "reboot" of Winnie the Pooh, Errol Morris' latest documentary Tabloid, and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, a historical Chinese drama featuring an appearance from Hugh Jackman. Will you be heading to the theatre this weekend? How was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2?

[With Phase 7 opening tonight in limited release in the U.S. -- check Bloody Disgusting Selects for theaters and showtimes -- we revisit our review from SXSW.] What if the end of the world came and nobody cared? Phase 7, written and directed by Nicolas Goldbart, borrows directly from Shaun of the Dead in an early scene as a married couple checks out of a grocery store in Argentina and drives home, completely oblivious to the stream of people stampeding into the store accompanied by the sound of wailing sirens. Unlike the characters in Shaun, this couple takes a long time to react. They may not look like slackers in a soon-to-be post-apocalyptic world, but they are. Coco (Daniel Hendler) and Pipi (Jazmin Stuart) fight...

Updated with official trailer! I think we got out of the gate pretty strong with the release of Rammbock (now available on DVD and VOD), but right now we're gearing up for both Phase 7 (in theaters July 17) and what I think is one of the best movies of the year, Cold Fish, Sion Sono's absolutely psychotic Japanese black comedy in the vein of a Takashi Miike film. I'd go on record as pretty much guaranteeing that you're going to Love it (I reviewed it last September out of Tiff). In order to keep Cold Fish Uncut, Bloody Disgusting Selects is going out with the film Unrated in limited arthouses beginning on August 5, which could expand if it does well enough. We've got those dates for you inside. For those of you not in the limited marketplace...

If you have seen any of director Sion Sono’s previous movies them you know that he is one of the most exciting directors working today. The director of such movies as Suicide Circle (or Club if you prefer) and Noriko’s Dinner Table is now ready to unleash his latest movie Cold Fish on U.S. audiences. It is set to release on DVD, VOD, and iTunes on August 23rd. This is the latest release in Bloody Disgusting’s Select series of releases which includes Phase 7, YellowBrickRoad and Rammbock. I can tell you right now that if I didn’t already have the UK release I would be all over this. Actually, I still may well be!
“Cold Fish-from Sion Sono, the director of Love Exposure
and Suicide Club. Cold Fish has won acclaim at both the Venice and Toronto

Phase 7 (Fase 7) is another foreign film included in the new batch of horror movies acquired by Bloody-Disgusting Selects and its partnership with AMC Theaters aka The Collective and is another one that turned out to be a great watch.
Phase 7 was written and directed by Nicolas Goldbart who gives us another post-apocalyptic look at what life would be like if the dreaded “rage virus” or something like it wiped out most of civilized humanity and left us some crazy asses to deal with, with just a little humor added. The movie definitely has that same feel as [Rec], Quarantine and some other familiar movies.
Starting off light-hearted we follow a couple, Coco and Pipi grocery shopping like you would do on any regular day but once the two head back to their apartment we see things aren’t quite right on the outside. They get back to their...

People keeping asking me for recommendations for movies screening at the Fantasia film festival. Simon already posted a list of ten safe bets. Kyle posted a list of four wild cards, four must see films that could be disappointing but still worth watching for various reasons. Here is a list of screenings that I highly recommend. Also a personal note for any of my friends checking out this list: I should be at most of these screenings depending on what I see beforehand via press screenings. Also many films screen at the same time, so I posted alternate times for each pick. Oh and in case you care, my most anticipated films are Bellflower, Kidnappe, To Die In A Lonely Place, Saint, Cold Fish and Attack The block

The building is quarantined due to a deadly epidemic and Coco must join forces with his slightly crazed next-door neighbor Horacio in order to protect his wife from the other neighbors, who have now become enemies. The cast includes Daniel Hendler ("Lost Embrace") as Coco; Jazmín Stuart as...

Shark Night 3D That entity known as the big old bad MPAA just pounded their gavel and handed in their verdict for an awful lot of horror films during the past week. I have to say I am mighty surprised at the rating that Shark Night 3D got. Didn't see that one coming what so ever. It's the first time I have truly been surprised by one of their ratings since they originally gave "How to Deal" an R rating for language. So take a peek for yourself to see what ratings the MPAA handed down. I discovered a few new titles just seeing this list myself.
The Incubus is rated PG-13 for some violence and sexual content.
How does a town of 500 people just disappear? Marnie Rose, the niece of the town's church pastor is plagued with a life of abuse and neglect for all of the nineteen years...

Writer/director Nicolás Goldbart’s Phase 7 tells the story of a young couple – Coco (Daniel Hendler) and Pipi (Jazmín Stuart) – who discover their apartment building is to be immediately quarantined due to the appearance of a deadly virus. Their ensuing seclusion brings about a series of monstrous events, alliances and double-crossings amongst the neighbours.
Phase 7 is a relatively taut apocalyptic thriller from Goldbart, an up-and-coming Argentinian talent, that, instead of focusing on the worldwide panic that follows an epidemic, centres on a lowly apartment building and its tenants as they deal with the outbreak – with often disastrous consequences.
Goldbart’s screenplay is tight, valiantly choosing to be an intimate character piece rather than an all-out action-fuelled thriller, representing how everyday people would react to a sudden deadly epidemic. Where it falters, however, is with the jarring lurches into black comedy that ultimately do little more than diffuse tension,...

CBS Films is getting on board Flight 75 and has set Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge, Marebito) to direct the claustrophobic thriller. The project's based on a pitch from Shimizu and "is set on a transpacific airliner where the passengers encounter what seems to be a supernatural force." Hopefully it's one million times better than that garbage Altitude. Taka Ichise (The Grudge, Shutter), Roy Lee (The Ring, The Departed, Pacific Rim) and Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Phase 7) are producing.
