Tedious vanity project

I got a free ticket to see this, and spent too much. The credits did not appear until the end of the movie, and that made it much clearer what was going on: There were a few names and surnames repeated several times in the credits, none of them well known as filmmakers. The director was listed as a main designer for the car that was featured, at length -- not that it was particularly interesting as a car. Or a movie; the whole thing is padded absurdly. There might be a decent half-hour TV show buried in this mess, but the fact that there's almost a half hour of setup before anything really happens is a giveaway of the pace of this thing. And once things start happening, they look like something from the 80's -- at best. Nothing happens fast, and almost nothing happens only once; the director liked some of his shots so much we see them several times. Even the scene after the credits is pointless.

Don't get me wrong -- I like outsider films. The original Gone in 60 Seconds, for example, is a classic. This has none of the pacing or wit of that movie, or any other decent one.

A horribly lackluster, under developed movie that doesn't deserve your money.

This potentially intriguing movie ruined my whole day for a vast number of reasons. I had come across the trailer for this, and being a fan of atmospheric supernatural thrillers, it looked appealing. Thus, I planned a whole day around going out to see this film theatrically in its limited release. Sadly, it failed on so many levels that I literally stopped caring about it halfway through, which made for a horrendously difficult sit for the next 50 minutes.

"Jinn" apparently has its mythology based on Middle Eastern folklore, but provides the most bare minimum exposition to get any of its ideas across. Thus, concepts and characters are poorly defined. It has concepts that are mentioned in relation to man, jinn, and angels - yet introduces nothing regarding angels anywhere in its narrative. As it goes along, you get the idea that Ray Park's character could potentially be an angel from the abilities he demonstrates, but nope, that potentially interesting idea never comes to be. The Jinn themselves are not well explained in the supposed mythology this film is attempting to setup and utilize. This film ultimately fails to flesh out or develop anything on a compelling level. The characters are not explored, leaving them as very two dimensional people despite having some potentially good quality talents here like William Atherton. It was at the point, nestled in the second act, where characters typically are fleshed out and given more depth and focus that I realized this film had no intention of caring at all about its characters. Everyone is given a shallow setup with no further development beyond that, and instead, the film throws a lot of flashy imagery and effects to use its sleek appearance mask its shortcomings.

"Jinn" also heavily lacks in excitement until well passed the point where I stopped giving a damn about it. The talents of Ray Park are grossly wasted here with a very tame and very brief martial arts showing, and a super slow motion fight scene that amounts to one of the most boring sequences of the film. The filmmakers also surely had no intention of building up legitimate scares or suspense. Jump scares are all it has to offer in that regard, and as I said, the action fails to excite at all. It also features some suped up concept car that the director clearly put far more effort and energy into integrating into this film than he did anything else.

I honestly stopped giving a damn about halfway through the film because the makers of this film never bothered to give me anything worth giving a damn about. You have to establish, develop, and build up your characters primarily, and that's exactly what this film never takes the time to do. Thus, it's exactly why I lost all interest in this, and felt embarrassed walking out of the theatre at the end of it. Also, despite the Jinn being a threat to the entire whole of humanity, the scope of this film is extremely narrow, and feels a lot like a forgettable late 1990's direct-to-video movie. It just lacks ambition, originality, intelligence, and scope to make it succeed on any creative level at all.

"Jinn" does have a very moody look to it with good quality cinematography, and the CGI effects work is quite high grade. However, good visuals and some nice effects cannot make-up for a lackluster script and lazy storytelling. The acting isn't poor, but it fails to compel an audience's interest. Do not bother paying to see this movie. There is a vast catalog of far superior works in this genre to watch and enjoy thoroughly than this such as The Prophecy, Constantine, Solomon Kane, or any episode of Supernatural. Don't waste your time, and don't encourage a sequel to a well below average movie like this because its end credits literally are asking you to do so.

Meh--More Made-for-TV than Big Screen

Jinn is a film which can't decide whether it's a horror flick, a sci-fi/ fantasy romp, or an origin story launch for an independent noir graphic novel hero (please note, I have no idea if Jinn is based off a comic, but they're obviously trying to force-start a franchise.) Like the film's protagonists who attempt to create a super amalgamation of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, only to have it come across as vaguely anti-Muslim and awkward, (and the 'edgy' sound track choices which just end up being bafflingly bizarre,) this mix doesn't quite work, and the film would have been better served choosing one genre, and doing it well, instead of all and fumbling through it. There are some genuinely creepy moments, which are ruined by the comedy, and the comedy is in turn ruined by the complete, posturing cheesiness of some of characters and dialogs. Several plot devices could have come straight from their TVTropes.com pages, and certain scenes feel almost as if they were lifted from famous, better-made, movies.

The production value is very high, which helps and hinders. There are many actors with recognizable faces doing the very best they can; some extremely expensive camera shots; well-done (and plentiful) effects; fighting and driving stunts; and seriously, what is the point of the sports car? The high production values prevent the film from be a crappy delight, but make the confusing plot bearable to watch. Watching Jinn, you'll wonder who in the world would pour so much money into a movie who's plot and screen play feel more like a made-for-TV film you stumble onto after midnight on the Sifi channel than the big budget blockbuster it longs to be.

If you like films like "Season of the Witch," "Outlander," or random, independent movies from Red Box, you'll probably like Jinn, but otherwise, this is a film to watch with a bunch of drunk friends and make fun of, though there are other, better, choices for that.

Please Never Watch This Movie

I would like to preface this by saying that I love movies and have a special place in my heart for bad horror movies at times.

However, this movie does not even rank well on my bad horror movies list. I spent more of this movie focused on if I would walk out of the movie theater (for the first time in my life) than on the plot - that was mainly because there was no plot.

The most impressive part of this movie was the fact they were able to put together a trailer that made me want to see it. Otherwise, they did not develop the characters, they jumped from one part of the story to the next without any transition and all the characters lacked emotional development (at one point instead of crying they just used droplets of water rolling straight down his cheek...).

All in all I can't tell you how much not to go see this. It is a waste of time and money. For your sake, do not make my mistake.

Unbearable

Don't trust any review of this movie higher than a two. Maybe there was a gear head who liked the car scenes and gave it a three, even though the drove the same street over and over. Anyone else giving this movie a favorable review has to be related to the director/writer/producer/actor.

This IS the worst movie of the year/decade/century/my life. Was there a script, not sure, doubt it. Someone took 100 ideas from 100 different movies, put them on film, and remembered they might need a plot or story. I see they forgot or abandoned that idea.

The movie was disconnected, random, and made no sense. It wasn't Mr Parks fault but the martial arts scene was senseless, and added no value to any part of the movie.

This movie is not good

While watching this movie, all I could think was "Bro I need some khobza and hummus." After suffering through the first 60 minutes, I was left completely mind boggled by this horrible attempt at a movie. This movie would have been better without a director. All the guy did was make a stupid camaro and parade it around town. He put himself in the movie because he knew it would be the only time anyone would see him on screen. Overall, the acting, writing, directing, and soundtrack were all garbage. Please don't watch this abomination of a motion picture even if they give you a free ticket. Hopefully the jinns don't get me for watching this insulting spectacle.

Must be a rating boosted movie

This movie is just pointless. It seems to be a unfortunate pregnancy of a car designer company and a wannabe movie director. The story has so much holes and just doesn't make sense at all. There is a horrible car chase scene where I suppose you should think that the car is cool, but all it brings is bad will to the movie, the car, the director and the actors. It's just so pointless. Let's say, you are being chased by a supernatural being, for some reason you decide to flee in your car, and for some reason this supernatural being can't keep up with the car, but it seems to be able to jump freely between dimensions and teleportate on free will. That might be an absurd example, but still it sums up this movie, its mainly a very unfortunate attempt at advertise a car through a movie. It stays of the 1 point rating just cause of some half decent CGI effects but other than that, it's just sad. Watch it just if you are utterly bored and need to kill some time without any demands on quality or entertainment whatsoever.

So Bad how did it get 6 stars?

Not sure if my review contains spoilers but I checked that anyway, it's terribly important how bad this movie is get out to the viewers. Go see some teen horror flick instead, you'll be glad you did.

What was the worst movie you have seen? Take that movie and times it by 100 times more bad and you have Jinn. I left before it ended, I was going to leave 10 minutes into it but I wasn't sure they'd give me my money back. They might have just said "You were stupid enough to buy a ticket for it, now sleep in your bed". I'm embarrassed for the people who made this movie I'm embarrassed for the people who have been billed in it, I'm more embarrassed for MYSELF for going. Did Hollywood need to burn money? I would have been better off seeing Noah at least I would have understood the plot. Jinn has no plot it was trying to incorporate Islam, Judaism and Christianity together in an attempt to do..to..to I don't know what. Well Islam wasn't around when Isaiah was written and while Mashiach (Yeshua) was around, Christianity wasn't. The crazy guy of the story is chanting in Arabic and has to get some holy water from a Mosque (say what?) but they are reading prophecy from the Torah. It was so dumb, it was worse than dumb there are no words to describe how bad this film was. I don't even recommend it on a free download, even if it's a free download and they send you a baseball hat after you've watched it. The movie is 1 hour 37 minutes I left at 1 hour and 20 minutes and that is time I will never get back and have no idea how at the great throne judgment I'm even going to be able to give account for this time. Was that a spoiler?

An interesting perspective

Having read a lot about the topic of Jinns, I was not completely disappointed by the movie although it could have been made even better.

Story took of well and was entertaining and subject was well researched. Good job showing the 'chillah'. Have read about it in my curious readings so could make a connection.

Not many could show this perspective of Jinns in mainstream cinema. It may be a new thing for all to understand the significance of the Holy Zamzam water or of the incantations.

The camera work and direction was flawless. Although at times the background score was a bit misplaced. Acting was passable too. Hopefully when the Jinn returns with a sequel (if any) it may improve to get a better viewership.

Good try on this movie.

I like it, but did not really like it

Interesting thing about Jinn, it feels like a low-key Fantasy film, like The Lord of the Rings with out money. Low-Key Sci-fi films are more common, such as recently released Under the Skin or last years' Her, but I can't recall a low key Fantasy film, in which The Fantasy elements are not so played up visually, but are integrated mostly in the story content.

The movie takes place in modern times like The Percy Jackson series, but unlike Percy Jackson, I don't think the film had any money for anything too flamboyant, but I will say that the visual effects they did have were done well.

The visual effects made for a very dark and eerie villain with the Jinn, a group of Sentiment beings briefly mention in the bible as creatures God made in the same essence as The Angels and Man, and now wish to take back the world they walked on first, due to their jealousy of man

Although the protagonist of the movie had the looks but seemed a little stiff, possibly not use to being the center of a movie, I'm glad they did not use a typically white actor as the dashing hero.

I went to go see this movie because I saw Ray Park had a role in it. We all remember Ray Park from his breakthrough role as Darth Maul in episode one. During his 15 minutes they mention he was a skilled marshal artist. Unless I'm missing a movie or two, I never really seen him do a Marshal arts film, and with Jinn, I still haven't. The movie lacks the adventure I was expecting from it.

The story itself was good but I feel it was not laid out well enough or maybe fantasy is not met to be done low-key. At the end of the movie they say their is more to come, but I don't think this movie is good enough to get a better sequel funded.

Superb Job.

Well Done Guys as it was I think the first comprehensive movie about Jinns. The people who don't like it or should I say the ones who don't understand the movie are not familiar with the Islamic point of view regarding supernatural. According to Islam Jinns and Angels were created far before Humans. Jinns were created with fire and also with a lot of supernatural powers. They have been here with us from the very beginning. The things we call ghosts, spirits etc are actually Jinns. The movie as a whole was a nice effort to showcase the Islamic perspective. Acting was very acceptable. The director knew all the time what he was doing and where he wants to go with the movie. There were a few mistakes here and there but overall it is worth your time and money.

Interesting, well-acted movie + annoying car commercial

I just got back from seeing "Jinn". To be honest, I hadn't even heard of it before. I saw it in the theater listings, looked up the movie, and saw it was filmed in Michigan, where I'm from, so I gave it a shot.

I really enjoyed this movie. The story was engaging and unique, and the acting was solid all around. It was a bit slow to get moving, but the final third of the movie and the ending were amazing. I loved the look and style of the movie. I LOVED the integration of aspects of the different Abrahamic spiritual traditions while still keeping the emphasis on Arabic/Muslim folklore. It's making me want to read up on some of that folklore myself, since I am unfamiliar with it. "Jinn" is only rated PG-13, but it's not a kids movie; it's just smarter and deeper than your average jump-scare torture porn with naked chicks types of "horror" movies.

As far as negatives go, I think the movie was a little schizophrenic in tone at times. It's not what I would call a pure horror movie, more of a horror plus supernatural action plus an unfortunate touch of "Fast and Furious". The overemphasis on the car was a huge distraction, and the connection between the filmmakers and the car is really strange. I guess they designed it specifically for this film and you can buy one? So you can continue the film experience in your real life? It is a cool looking car, but every time I saw it, it pulled me out of the narrative because I felt like I was watching a car commercial. Thankfully, it was only in a few scenes.

I definitely enjoyed "Jinn" and would recommend it to anyone looking for a more intellectual horror movie from a non-western perspective. Just try to ignore the car.

P.S. There is a brief scene at the end of the credits; I don't mean the scene in the church but later at the very end.

Jumbled Mess

I saw "Jinn", starring Dominic Rains-Captain America: The Winter Soldier, General Hospital_t.v.; Serinda Swan-Graceland_t.v., Breakout Kings_t.v.; Ray Park-Snake Eyes in the G.I.Joe movies, Darth Maul in Star Wars:Episode 1-The Phantom Menace; William Atherton-The Girl Next Door, Die Hard 1&2 and Faran Tahir-Elysium, Iron Man.

This movie is a jumbled mess that is based on an Eastern legend. The narrator says something to the effect of, "In the beginning, God created three things: Man out of clay, Angels out of light and Jinn out of fire." Jinn are evil demon-like creatures. The movie starts with a fight between a man and a Jinn around 1900, with the man winning. The Jinn, being a sore loser, says that he will kill every member in the man's family for eternity-I don't know why he couldn't just kill the man right then and be done with it. Then, the story jumps to the present time-line where Dominic is the current descendant from that man and Serinda is his wife. Ray shows up on their doorstep bearing a gift that informs Dominic of the family curse-just in time, too, because the Jinn decides to attack right about then. William plays a priest that works with Ray and Faran plays a man in a mental ward that just might have some answers- Yep, it's always the crazy ones that save the day. The effects are alright but the story is not consistent;one time a sacred knife works and other times it doesn't. Sometimes, the Jinn shows fantastic powers and other times, it's like he forgot he had them. It just has lots of loop holes. There is a scene after the end credits, so if you sit through the whole movie, you might as well see it, and the best surprise? They announce at the end-sort of like they do in the James Bond movies-"Jinn Will Return"; Boy, do they have some high hopes. One of the reasons I went to see it in the first place was because of Ray Park-I'm a big fan of his-and he does get to show off his martial arts skills, although it is against some drugged-out mental patients that do not put up much of a fight. It's rated "PG-13" for violence and terror and has a running time of 1 hour & 37 minutes. It's not one that I would buy on DVD. I don't think I would even rent it, either. If you really want to see it, wait until it comes to cable.

Horrifyingly terrible

I really just don't know what to fully make of this rubbish. Right from the start this is just a terrible movie that tries in vain to pull itself off as a serious horror.

From it's deplorable premise, acting and dialogue, it's any wonder that anyone involved didn't just gave up halfway through and walk off the set during filming.

For some reason the movie tries to make us believe that only 3 beings were ever created; man made of clay, angels made of light and jinns made of fire. At one point in the movie, we are told and expected to believe that there are no such things as ghosts, poltergeists or demons and that everything bad that happens in the world is the work of the Jinn. So forget everything you've ever learnt before. Plane crashes, disease, wars, terrorism, Kirsten Stewart; they're all the result of Jinns.

Most of the time I couldn't even work out what was going on and after several attempts at trying to make sense of this movie I simply gave up trying, so I never even made it to the end. The dialogue is so soft at times it's like they're whispering to each other knowing that what they're saying is so stupid that hopefully we won't pick up on it. That is until something weird happens then we have the obligatory loud sudden music that blows you out of the room hoping that the sheer shock and inevitable heart attack that follows will somehow turn this crap into some kind of horror movie.

Nothing I saw in this made any sense and it's so disjointed it's like no one even read the script. The main protagonist is somehow the latest in a long line of supposed Jinn killers and now without any real explanation he has evil stalking him. This evil wants to manifest itself in the form of a shadow at the window in a nearby building and a break in at his home which results in some kind of bizarre furniture stacking. All of this is of course supernatural as no human can stack furniture and no voyeur ever cast a shadow in a window but whatever. So we're off to see a priest as the cops didn't take anything seriously and why would they seeing as nothing has happened and no one was hurt, but there's evil afoot so why not go to a priest. This priest who just so happens to know all about him and tells him that evil is stalking him gives him a dagger just in case there's more evil furniture stacking and fluttering papers.

I gave up at this point as I refuse to watch a movie that's making no sense and follows no story format and has no plot. Jinn is a garbage movie and that's where it belongs.

Nice time pass watch

I am had a high expectation from this movie, and i was a tad bit disappointed with it. But if you like a mild Horror movie, this is for you.

It shows the secret war for dominance over the world between Jinn and Humans. Very few people know that Jinn exist and fewer can fight them while waiting for The One to end this war and begin the Golden Era.

The beginning of the movie was interesting and i was hoping it might get better, but it didn't. The concept of jinn is fairly new and this movie could have been better, a lot better. I would not call it a full on horror movie but it had its highs. There was a scene which jolted me for a second and the scene right at the end of the movie, the very end where a Jinn says "If you know about the Jinn, The Jinn knows about You" this was freaky and was a nice way to try and scare the viewers.

Well the cover looks good.

well considering a 9 year old must have wrote the script its not bad. Oh wait that didn't happen so it really is that bad. I really wonder why actors do not say something when they read how bad their lines are, or are they just so grateful to work they just read them.It seemed like they cut a lot of scenes out maybe and the character do really odd things for no reason. Maybe watch this for the one scene where the random English guy starts ninja kicking mental patents for no real reason other than it looks cool.Then use all his power to levitate some car keys in sparkly blue slow motion. Or maybe don't as there are much better films out there.

A friend wanted to see this because she had lived in the Ann Arbor area for a while. From what I hear it wasn't very good - apparently she and my girlfriend were making snide comments about...well most of the aspects (bad acting, confusing plot line, continuity errors, poor quality rehash of aspects from old Star Wars movies, etc.). I fell asleep - multiple times apparently since they woke me me up once to tell my I was snoring, but there are large portions where I have no idea what was going on (though I'm told I didn't miss anything). For the brief periods I was awake I did notice the focus on the car - based on that it looks like GM is bringing back the Firebird, but I didn't hang around for all the credits to confirm they were a major financial backer.

Twisted and boring

As a Muslim, i find this movie hilarious. It should be labeled as comedy/horror. not to mention how the hell that this guy uses holy water to get rid of the Jinn? and the holy water was given by a Muslim? Funny, there is no holy water in our religion. We're not Christian.

The Arabic writings in his car, i think it says "bla bla bla..alb alb alb.." it's not even a holy scripture. And at the beginning of the movie where he fought the Jinn, he uses Hindu's language instead of reciting verses from holy Quran? Or maybe at first it was a verse from the Quran, but repeatedly and it's not even right.

Boring movie, fake, twisted. Not really what we called "Jinn". Study more history about Jinn before you mix ours with other religion beliefs.

An Islamic Perspective

The Jinn concept is a little misconstrued in this movie, leaving the Muslim audience a little confused about what we know about their exhistance. The film does offer good, wholesome entertainment, without having to use profanity, nudity , and the selling of sex. After watching the premiere on Youtube, I have had a change of heart as to my original feelings about this movie. I really liked what the director had to say about the making of this film. It seems he worked really hard and deserves a lot of credit. Muslims should support the work of other Muslims and we should encourage our children to be more creative and do what it is they love to do.

B Movie

I love this Genre and the premise/description sounded right up my alley. But the direction, film quality and acting are nothing more than a terrible B-movie.

It was disjointed, without a coherent storyline and a total waste of time!

And BTW, I DID like Prometheus AND Twilight! One reviewer said she was giving it a 10 to balance the Twilight lovers but GIVE ME A BREAK!

The Dialogue is terrible, the editing and screen quality was sub-par and I couldn't even watch it all the way through it was so bad! And again, I LIKE this sci-fi/fantasy/horror genre of movies. It was just poorly made, pure and simple. I feel like I like a LOT of movies that get bad ratings and I will watch 10 minutes of something with a storyline I like even if it has a bad rating to make up my own mind.

In this case the ratings were spot on...even for me. You can waste your time if you want, but you've had fair warning!

Looking In Depth

for all the bad critics, listen carefully: Jinn is not the average American movie. you're not used to this. i get that. HOWEVER, i'm glad this movie is here. i watched it and enjoyed. by the end of the movie, i could feel that it had been a setup for more than what we were being shown. the "guardian" theme, including its symbol, was my favorite clue to a much, much bigger picture here. another fave: "the prophesied one." true, they didn't delve into it too much, why was there a prophesied one, how did the family get the curse, who was "the girl" in the start.... this kind of a movie needs thinkers. not just watchers. you have to delve deeper, because the picture is painted for you. you're not just plainly told what's going on.

if you need a movie that just makes you laugh and zone out for a while, watch a comedy.

Highly entertaining old fashion monster movie

Jinns are not very popular creatures in horror movies and there's not whole lot of them if we exclude Wishmaster series.

So when they finally announced Jinn-based movie, i was quite interested to see it, even if trailer looked like a cheap DTV movie.

"Jinn" wasn't anything special, it's not gonna rank with horror classics, but it's highly entertaining movie because it plays more like superhero origin then actual horror movie. It's toned down fantasy mixed with horror, with nice pace, good cinematography and some cool special effects. CGI wasn't that great and it gave movie bit of DTV quality, but luckily it wasn't used often, only in few scenes for a short amount of time, so it shouldn't bother anyone. However, there's a longer CGI scene where Jinn chases down the hero in the streets in sand-like form which looks rather descent and it looks like that's where most of the CGI budget went.

Story itself was here and there, but overall movie keeps you interested and entertained. It's your typical fantasy hero story, of man being the Chosen-One-would- be-slayer-of-evil.

reading all those "critics" here makes me wonder, did they ever think movies can be fun?

Watch it @ your own risk ... Grrrr

The only good thing about this movie is the trailer.

How were the makers of this movie were able to put together a good trailer is what surprised me the most while the movie is so predictable ,annoying,terribly acted, that i am surprised how were they able to pull it.

Specially what with the double-triple roll, there was content decent VFX but the plot was absolutely terrible.

I just get down to the acting the protagonist is terrible at everything, lacks acting skills zero emotions.

on the contrary i would like to ask the makers why make such a movie???

It's already on Netflix, that says a lot.

This is a movie to play when nothing else is on Sunday TV. It drags and drags. The main character is a dork and slow to learn, relies on his good looks to spice up the screen, and so clumsy. The storyline was the worst screen to screen performance I've ever seen. I'm not a major movie watcher and can be satisfied watching commercials, but this one was worse than an infomercial. I can only think that this was a pet project by a student or a spoiled rich kid. The only parts that I liked was the black smoke reeking from the jinn while he was floating and the glowing eyes from a "good guy". The rest of the movie is sketchy and lacks smooth transitions that mean something in movie land because we are not there. Viewers need these things to stay on course. I'll never watch a movie ignoring the Netflix ratings and thankfully I didn't read the crazy maxed out stars on here because I would have been truly annoyed at how misleading they are. Ten thousand stars just to balance out the lower stars??? Where does this justify in movie land? Thank God these folks don't have real lives and watch these horrible movies instead of voting for Oscar nominees, etc.

Tried too hard or not hard enough?

Same scenes revisited, same kinda good effects with OK sound fx... but still...this film blew. I have a long standing record with films of the bizarre, nasty, horrifying, dangerous and kinky...this film was trash. Even a friend of mine whom is a far...faar bigger buff of the various darker genres than I would say the same.

What could have been a grand tale about one of the pre existing beings upon our world since eldritch times was pitiful. This was not scary in the least, and played out more like a cross between constantine and hellboy in a pathetic way.

Avoid or lose the hour and a half of your life, and never recover it . 2/10 is the best I can give this, if nothing else but for the actors efforts. A film is still a trying project to complete.
