Chicago – There is no better Father’s Day present at the movies than director Brett Haley’s new film, “Hearts Beat Loud.” It’s the story of a single Dad, portrayed by Nick Offerman, dealing with his about-to-go-to-college daughter. The riff in the film is that they are also songwriters together, and that becomes a major conflict.

Offerman expands his acting muscles with this role, showing many different sides to his guilt-ridden father character. Supporting him is rising star Kiersey Clemons, who believably handles both a vulnerable teenager and confident singer/songwriter. Their relationship is typical of the leaving-the-nest elements that parents and teens endure, but their connection as songwriters make the relationship unique.

I admit I have a soft spot for musicals, which means I also have big soft spot for films where people come together to make new music - either as a band, or a DJ, or a solo act. Hearts Beat Loud is the latest film from filmmaker Brett Haley (The New Year, I'll See You in My Dreams, The Hero) and it might be the best Closing Night film I've seen in the 12 years I've been coming to the Sundance Film Festival. Most films that premiere on Closing Night at Sundance are enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable, however this one breaks the mold and delivers a heartwarming, rockin', completely satisfying experience. The music they make is great, even though it does have a pop sound, it's still music I want to listen to on repeat. Most of all there's a sweet, warm feeling to this film that makes it so satisfying,...

2018 will be a big year for Princess Charlotte!
Prince William and Kate Middleton announced on Monday that their 2-year-old daughter will officially start nursery school in January. The royals have chosen Willcocks Nursery School in London, which is close to their Kensington Palace home.
"We are delighted that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen the Willcocks Nursery School for Princess Charlotte," Willcocks Nursery School said in a statement. "We look forward to welcoming Charlotte to our nursery in January."
As Et previously reported, Princess Charlotte's brother, 4-year-old Prince George, began school at Thomas’s Battersea in September, which was one of the reason's why the royal family moved their home base from Norfolk to London this year.
At the time, Prince William hilariously revealed that his son was "over" school after just 14 days.

One of the films on our radar to most definitely see is Akshay Kumar’s PadMan directed by R. Balki. The social issue film, which also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte, will release in India and worldwide on Jan 26th, 2018.
Billed as the most progressive family entertainer yet, Akshay Kumar plays the title role and once again showcases his commitment to social entertainers, in line with his latest super hit, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (Toilet: A Love Story).
PadMan is Inspired by the life of Indian entrepreneur and inventor Arunachalam Muruganantham, who invented the low cost sanitary pad-making machine and revolutionized the movement of cost effective female hygiene in India.

Chicago – The familiar character actor and voiceover artist, Sam Elliott, has been breaking out in that latter part of his career. Known for his cowboy roles, smooth bass-tone voice and epic mustache, the icon has been seen lately in diverse roles in “Grandma,” “Digging for Fire,” “Grace and Frankie” and his latest – and perhaps greatest – “The Hero.”

“The Hero” is co-written (with Marc Basch) and directed by Brett Haley, who had previously directed Elliott, opposite Blythe Danner, in “I’ll See You in my Dreams.” Haley must have been inspired, because he wrote “The Hero” expressly for Elliott, and uses the actor’s cowboy character past as a basis for the role of Lee Hayden, an old actor with a broken past, and a health condition that changes everything. Elliott is masterful as the lead in the film,...

Chicago – Amy Pietz is a Midwesterner made good in her primary role as a working actor. And what better performer to appear at the kick-off of the 2017 Midwest Independent Film Festival, as Pietz’s new film takes place in her native Wisconsin.
“Halfway” tells the story of a hulking African American ex-convict (Quinton Aaron of “The Blind Side”) as he tries to rebuild his life on a dairy farm, managed with difficulty by a widowed mother named Beth (Pietz). The new year of the Midwest Independent Film Festival starts Tuesday, Feb. 7th, at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema in Chicago.
Amy Pietz was born in Wisconsin, from modest circumstances, and was determined at an early age to be a performer. 2017-01-04T09:15:27-08:00New Movies January 6: 'Underworld,' 'Hidden Figures,' and 'A Monster Calls'
This weekend is the first full weekend of the new year, and the 2017 movie year will get rolling in earnest after a couple of very quiet weekends for new movies. The new year will start off modestly, though, with new releases that might not be able to outpace the hold-overs.
The first, and probably the biggest, of the week's new movies is Underworld: Blood Wars, the fifth installment in the horror/fantasy franchise starring Kate Beckinsale. Expect this one to earn somewhere in the vicinity of $15 to $20 million, which may be enough to knock Rogue One: A Star Wars Story out of the top spot. Or it may not.

The new year may kick off in the throes of a frigid, bitterly cold winter, but thankfully, the end to the only four Bachelor-less months of the year is sure to warm your heart like a mug of warm cocoa sipped by a roaring fire ... in a steamy hot tub filled with 30 buxom (and surprisingly multi-racial!) single ladies all putting out pining for a single thorny flower.
But as we leave the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and the tragedy- and celebrity death-infused 2016 in the rear view mirror, it's time for America to open its real present -- Nick Viall's unprecedented fourth quest for televised love.

The new year, 2017 has already rung the bell for Bollywood gossip-mongers and the ones who are involved in it are the rock-stars of ‘Rock On 2’. Yes, the buzz that’s doing rounds over internet is about the leading pair, Shraddha Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar who are apparently living-together. Recently divorced actor, Farhan Akhtar is no doubt a youth sensation with his hot looks from ‘Rock On’ and ‘Rock on 2’. Although, the latest sequel didn’t work well with the box office but the pairing of Shraddha and Farhan has been given a hit from the audiences. The gossip even went to such a point where Shraddha’s dad, Shakti Kapoor and aunt Padmini Kolhapure were reported to take her out forcefully from Farhan’s house and dragging her up to their own home. Shocked to hear such a rumour about herself, Shraddha turned to Bombay times to share her feelings on this issue.

The year closed with a very uneven holiday period.”Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Sing” were the standouts, contributing most of the $160 million that comprises the Top 10 total. (“Sing” is a particular surprise, coming within $9 million of “Rogue One.”) Wider, more-expensive holiday studio releases were mixed at best, with only “Passengers” showing above-average life. However, awards contenders “Fences,” “Manchester by the Sea,” and “La La Land” are thriving.

I was an illustration major at university and one era we studied repeatedly was "The Golden Age". For illustrators that was roughly the 1900s through the 1940s. One of the the most sentimental traditions of this time was Jc Leyendecker's 'New Years Babies' covers. The babies were always white and cutesy but weren't always "happy" and sometimes politics entered the picture. Here is the 1917 painting to your left a full one hundred years ago wherein there's a scary hole where Europe should be. This diapered cherub is not at all sure he wants to arrive into this (World War I was raging and would not end for another 23 months.)
The New Year's Baby tradition reminds us that whatever may be ending or happening, there are always opportunities for fresh starts. 2016 was a shit show but maybe a whole lot of really cool human beings that will one day be giants of the arts,...

(Spoiler warning: Contains lots of plot twists about “Arrival and “Your Name”) The New Year encourages us to reflect on the past 12 months and make plans and resolutions for the arrival of the year ahead. But this year — like every year — is full of distractions that make it hard to stay focused in the moment. Two 2016 films, Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” and Makoto Shinkai’s Japanese anime blockbuster “Your Name,” had complex stories that examine modern communication and connectivity. Despite fantasy and sci-fi elements, both felt oddly relevant to the election. But what made them feel profound was how they used time-jumping narratives to.

The U.K.’s The Telegraph reports that the royal couple — and their two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte — are planning on making their London home at Kensington Palace their full-time residence come 2017. In doing so, they’ll be making fewer trips to their current full-time country home, Amner Hall, where they’ve lived for the past three years.
The couple moved into their London home, Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1A (the former home of Princess Margaret), a few months after their April 2011 wedding.

The New Year is just now starting to feel for real. Folks are remembering to write 2016 on the check they sign and, who knows, maybe even starting to pay attention to the upcoming election season. Well, maybe. But before we get too serious about life let us savor some silliness. Deadpool is a film about a seriously messed up dude named Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds). He was a soldier. Then he was a mercenary. Eventually he becomes the superhero called Deadpool – beloved by geekdom the world over. This film is his origin story.
Deadpool was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, best known for Zombieland (2009), so they know the funny. It is based on the popular comic character work created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicleza. Tim Miller makes his feature film directorial debut here.
