The highest-ranked TV shows of 2023 on the popular review site RottenTomatoes.com span multiple genres. Not surprisingly, there are two crime shows with this distinction, both fronted by formidable female cops. The final season of the gripping Happy Valley (AMC+) centers on British Sgt. Catherine Cawood (a powerful Sarah Lancashire), while dark comedy Deadloch (Prime Video) shows bickering partners solving murders in a quirky Tasmanian town. Then there’s a trio of coming-of-age stories: The irresistible Reservation Dogs (Hulu) depicts the blossoming of four Native American teens on an Oklahoma reservation; Primo (Freevee) is about ambitious Mexican American teen Rafa (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) and his unique family; and comedy The Other Two (Max) shows the struggle of millennial sibs (Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver) when their baby brother (Case Walker) attains overnight fame. The only sci-fi winner: Foundation (Apple TV+), based on Isaac Asimov’s iconic trilogy about warring empires. Tasty...

Exclusive: Apple TV+ Has Grown Its Library by 35% in the Past Year as Streamer Hits Viewership Highs
When it comes to keeping subscribers happy and engaged, one of the tried and true methods that streaming services have employed since the dawn of this era of media is to offer libraries so chock full of steady streams of content, that it would be impossible for any one viewer to ever watch it all. However, one subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service has bucked that trend, and in doing so has remained relatively small in comparison to its competitors, but is becoming increasingly invaluable to contentious customers. By keeping its streaming offerings limited — and not to mention star-studded — Apple TV+ has cultivated a reputation for consistently delivering some of the best series and films on streaming without the unnecessary swings and misses that other streamers force viewers to wade through.

Apple TV+ will be tapping into France’s lavish culinary heritage with “Carême,” a new original series about the world’s first celebrity chef, Antonin Carême, which will be directed by Martin Bourboulon (“The Three Musketeers: d’Artagnan”).
Set in the 19th century, the eight-episode French drama will chart the sprawling story of Carême, who rose from humble beginnings in Paris to the height of culinary stardom in Napoleon’s Europe. Quoc Dang Tran’s adaptation of the manga “Shizuku No Kami,” Drops of God released its final episode this week, and things went as perfectly as you could imagine for the two competitors. Meeting each other for the first time in a competitive circumstance, Camille Leger and Issei Tomine considered each other natural foes because they both competed for Alexandre Leger’s inheritance worth millions. However, over the course of eight episodes, the rivalry turns into something beautiful that needs to be witnessed to be understood. From the get-go, one might’ve found Issei to be unnaturally stoic and somber, but when you think about his upbringing, you understand the reasons behind his pale demeanor. However, the series explores how good company finally changes Issei into a happy and jubilant young man, and here’s how it happens:

Apple TV’s drama series Drops of God, adapted from the Japanese manga “Shizuku No Kami,” released its finale today, and it’s one of the best endings you could hope for in a show. At the helm of the show is Camille Leger, a young woman who’s spent most of her life with her mother after she took her away from her father, Alexandre Leger. Camille’s father was an important man, to say the least; Alexandre was a pioneer in the study of wines, and he’d accumulated a massive fortune worth millions. Camille, on the other hand, was a neurotic writer who stayed away from alcohol at all costs and suffered greatly from multiple emotional vulnerabilities. Today, we take a look at why Camille was hardwired this way and if, in the end, she was able to overcome the issues that ailed her.

Sometimes, the quickest shortcut to high drama is immense stakes on simple terms. That’s certainly true for “Drops of God,” the Apple TV+ series that closes out its season this week. The latest of the platform’s multilingual creative successes (including “Pachinko” and “Acapulco”), this eight-part series dives into an unusual gambit to split up the massive inheritance of global wine expert Alexandre Léger (Stanley Weber). In order to prove their worthiness as the heir to the world’s largest private wine collection and to shepherd his publishing empire, two contenders are put through a series of tasks. His daughter Camille (Fleur Geffrier) and his longtime pupil Issei Tomine (Tomohisa Yamashita) face off in a series of challenges that test both their palates and their ingenuity.

We may never see other phenomenon like “Squid Game.” Hopefully we do. The Emmys are the kind of voting body/cultural institution that should get that yearly kind of external shakeup, just as film awards have seen non-English language productions catch fire with the public and capture awards attention. Getting to that point for “Squid Game” meant legendary word of mouth, Netflix backing, and a quality series with elements that made voting for it all the easier, a perfect Emmys storm.
But even if those lightning-in-a-bottle circumstances are seemingly impossible to recapture on purpose, the success of “Squid Game” did lay out a roadmap for other potential international hits to succeed on their own. A year after a genuine phenomenon, it seems like the TV world has largely waited for Season 2 of that show to be the next international series to enjoy that kind of success.
What if we didn’t have to wait?...

It’s a sign of confidence in the unit, run by CEO Josh Grode and vice chairman of worldwide production Mary Parent, that a traditional mega-lender would invest at such a turbulent time in a media business rife with consolidation and Wall Street woes.
Grode said the company was “pleased to extend our relationship with J.P. Morgan as we continue to grow our global film and TV pipeline and monetize our IP across multiple platforms.” He credited the creative team led by Parent for “creating compelling content that resonates with audiences around the world.”

Dune producer Legendary Entertainment has secured an $800 million five-year credit facility led by J.P. Morgan, replacing an existing agreement with “improved and market-leading terms” that reflect its “profitability and success in executing its business plan,’ the company said.
Led by CEO Josh Grode, Legendary develops, produces, distributes and finances films and TV content across platforms and is growing in comic books, VR, licensing and merchandising. Deadline reported Monday that it is one of four suitors circling eOne as Hasbro prepares to sell a majority stake in the indie film and TV studio.

Not only do we have Rachel Weisz and Alice Birch on this week's show to talk all about Prime Video's resurrection of '80s Cronenberg thriller Dead Ringers, but Melanie Lynskey joins us for an update on how Yellowjackets Season 2 is going. Plus the team head off to A&e with Niamh Algar in Malpractice on ITV, and try a little oenology with Apple's manga adaptation Drops Of God. All of which leads to a slightly anarchic discussion of super-tasters, Boyd's tea-making technique, and the time Kay knocked herself out with Sambuca shots.

Apple and Canal+ have signed a landmark deal that will bring Apple TV+ to all Canal+ subscribers in France, along with some other European territories.
The deal is different from the aggregation agreements that Canal+ has in place with other streamers such as Disney+ and Netflix, whose offers are being accessible as part of the French pay TV operator’s bundle.
Under the pact, Apple TV+ will be available at no extra cost to Canal+ subs from April 20. Canal+ customers can seamlessly and easily access the films and series of Apple TV+ directly on their existing set-top box — with no separate app or subscription necessary. This is a multi-territory agreement for France, French speaking-Switzerland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Speaking to Variety, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of services, and Maxime Saada, Canal+ chairman and CEO of Canal+ Group, said they’ve known each other for years and celebrated the idea of tying the knot.

Exclusive: Mediawan Rights Managing Director Valérie Vleeschhouwer says the French company’s €100M ($107M) co-development agreement with Entourage Ventures allows the Zorro seller to “seize opportunities” and significantly expand its slate.
In an interview with Deadline prior to Series Mania, Vleeschhouwer said the deal “is the way to give us the tools to serve our strategy and serve talent.”
“We can be reactive and responsive when we have a crush on a project and we believe in it,” she added.
Mediawan’s international arm struck the agreement six weeks ago and will see the pair co-develop, co-produce and co-distribute shows. It covers scripted, documentary and animation and already includes Mediawan shows Zorro and Civilizations.
Before Mediawan, Entourage invested more than €50M ($54M) on 40 French films, and first pushed into TV series in 2020 through an agreement with producer Media Muskateers. “Entourage has great expertise in the sector, so it made sense to work together,...

Lille’s Series Mania Forum is kicking off today with a packed schedule of talks, screenings and competitions.
Fighting it out in International Competition are the likes of Prime Video’s Toni Collette starrer The Power, Haven of Grace from Magnetic Beats director Vincent Maël Cardona, and Quoc Dang Tran’s Apple TV+ series Drops of God.
They compete against Greek series Milky Way, which opened the festival, Viaplay’s futuristic Russell Tovey drama The Fortress, Red Skies from Israel, The Actor from Iran and Fleeting Lies from Spain. Each will have its world premiere at the event.
The Power is a fantasy series set in a world where the physical balance of power between men and women switches when electric arcs emerge from the fingers of teenage girls all around the world. Debuting later this month, it comes from Sister, the UK producer behind Chernobyl and is based on Naomi Alderman’s sci-fi novel.

Everyone says: “I love you,” at least in Lille, where Japanese star Tomohisa Yamashita – in town to promote “Drops of God,” which premieres on Apple TV+ on April 21 – brought fans to tears. With one admitting that thanks to his 2005 series “Nobuta Wo Produce,” where he played the character of Akira, she decided not to commit suicide 14 years ago.
“You saved my life,” she said.
In between interacting with a clearly overwhelmed audience, Japanese singer, dancer, talk show host and actor discussed his multifaceted career, one that started when he was just 11 years old.
“When I was a child, there was a series on TV and the main role was played by a teen. I realized there were stars my age and reached out to agencies for auditions.”
In 2004, he joined boy band News.
“The producers brought us together and said: ‘O.K, you will be in a band. It was so sudden.

With an International Panorama spangled by gems – think Spain’s “Apagón,” Sweden’s “Blackwater,” and Canada’s “Disobey” and “Little Bird” – Series Mania also weighs in this year with one, if not the, strongest and most mouthwatering of international competitions in its history.
Including the opening and closing series, Amazon’s “Greek Salad” and Netflix’s “Transatlantic,” nearly all the global streamers have titles in the lineup, from Apple TV+’s “Drops of God” and Paramount+’s “Fleeting Lies.” The lineup also features some A-List international writing talents, such as the U.K.’s Jack Thorne and Israel’s Ron Leshem and Amit Cohen, whose “The Virtues” and “No Man’s Land” rank among the most memorable of recent Series Mania competition titles, and closing the festival, out of competition, “Unorthodox’s” Anna Wenger.”Fleeting Lies” also represents one of the first series from Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo label in Madrid,...

Based in the northern French town of Lille since 2018, Series Mania has emerged as a key showcase for premium series and a spotlight for international creators — though, given the wider forces shaping the TV business, that spotlight has often shone on talent from the same three or four territories. And so, when programming the latest edition, the Series Mania brass looked to widen the field.
“This year, we will introduce our attendees to new narrative modes and visual possibilities,” says general director Laurence Herszberg. “Because we’ve discovered so many series from countries that haven’t often attended the major festivals, with creative outputs that are much lesser-known. We want to celebrate them as well.”
Running March 17–24, this edition boasts 55 series culled from 396 submissions encompassing more than 60 countries, with titles from Uruguay (“The Universe Conspires”), Benin (“Black Santiago Club”) and an Indo-Pakistani production (“Limboland”) all appearing at Series Mania for the very first time.

When Laurence Herszberg first launched Series Mania back in 2010 in Paris, the former Forum des Images director was keen to apply her deep knowledge of film and the film festival model to the television sector. At the time, says the French exec, no one was doing any kind of TV festival “solely dedicated to series.”
“No one was really talking about TV series,” the festival general director tells Deadline. “So, I decided to do something for the public just to try and see and imagine how it would work in the television sector.”
Little did she know how much the industry would shift, with much of the balance (and money) now lying in the scripted television sphere rather than the independent film space. As a result, across the last 13 years Herszberg and her team have been able to nurture and grow Series Mania into one of the most attractive events in the global TV calendar.
