"Haikyuu!!" is one of the biggest anime in the world right now and certainly the biggest sports one — and it's easy to see why. This is the perfect gateway into sports anime, and a show that may make you fall in love with volleyball (even if you have never watched a second of volleyball) thanks to its sense of camaraderie, compelling and memorable characters, and ability to make any volleyball match seem like the most exciting life-or-death game in the world.
After four seasons of high school boys playing volleyball and making audiences emotional, "Haikyuu!!" is heading to its conclusion, with the Karasuno High School Volleyball Club facing the lights and finishing their final tournament together before the seniors graduate. To bring the story to a close, we're getting feature films that finish off the story, much like "The First Slam Dunk" did 30 years after the anime ended.

On April 6, Haikyu!! the anime series celebrated its 10th anniversary. However, with the franchise having stopped coming up with new episodes since 2020, the latest chapter, which comes into the form of a movie was much anticipated, also because it brings Karasuno against Nekoma and Hinata against Kenma, in one of the most intriguing clashes of the whole series.

In a recent interview with Comic Natalie, studio Orange founder Eiji Inomoto shared his initial doubts on the establishment of a CG specialized animation studio and the remarkable rise of CG animation within the anime industry.
Initially a freelance CG creator in the game industry, Inomoto transitioned to anime with ‘Zoids: Chaotic Century‘ in 1999. He handled all aspects of production for projects like ‘Geneshaft‘ and ‘Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex‘.
His pivotal moment came when he was offered to manage CG for Shoji Kawamori’s ‘Aquarion‘, leading him to establish Orange.
Initial Skepticism:
Reflecting on the early days, Inomoto revealed that he was unsure if such a company could sustain itself as a viable business even with the increasing use of CG in anime.
“At that time, the demand for CG in the anime industry was growing as a way to fill in the gaps that were difficult to handle with traditional animation.

Veteran Japanese film producer Muneyuki Kii has assembled a bold new venture to shake up Japan’s traditionally sclerotic and risk-averse approach to movie financing. The executive, formerly a lead producer at Tokyo-based studio Toei, revealed the launch Thursday of K2 Pictures, a mini-studio that aims to bring a more direct, Hollywood-style model of film funding to Japan’s industry.
The new company will launch a content fund — dubbed the “K2P Film Fund I” — to finance both live-action and animated Japanese features. K2P also has lined up an impressive roster of Japanese directors to collaborate with on its first slate, including Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters), local industry mainstay Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, 13 Assassins), Shunji Iwai (Love Letter), Miwa Nishikawa (Sway), Kazuya Shiraishi (The Devil’s Path) and leading anime studio Mappa, known for mega-hits like Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Attack on Titan.

Former Toei producer Muneyuki Kim has launched K2 Pictures, which will work with major directors such as Hirokazu Kore-eda and aim to create a new funding ecosystem for Japanese animated and live-action features.
The plan is to return profits that would traditionally go to film companies to investors and creators, which its founder says closely follows approaches used in Hollywood and elsewhere. Creators who team with K2 will be able to participate on projects as shareholders.
Kii, who will be K2’s CEO, says most Japanese films are produced through a system of ‘production committees’ with industry know-how formed through film companies, TV networks and publishers, which it believes makes entry into the market difficult and limits returns to producers and creators.
To this end, company has launched the K2P Film Fund I, which will provide support for animated and live-action features and enable to “investors, creators and crew...

The year 2023 was an embarrassment of riches when it came to animation. Movies like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became massive commercial successes and crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office, while movies like “Nimona” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” hit big with audiences and critics. There were films that boasted wildly different aesthetics and showed the power of the animation medium, like “Blue Giant” and “The First Slam Dunk.” We also saw the return of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, who gave us his most personal film to date with “The Boy and the Heron.”
That’s a lot for 2024 to live up to — luckily, it seems the year will bring with it a healthy mix of big studio franchises and more grown-up animated fare. There are still big and highly anticipated animated movies slated to be released in 2024. Here is a rundown of 2024 animated releases with updates to come.

Japanese anime master Hayao Miyazaki is revered in China as much as he is anywhere. The 83-year-old filmmaker’s Oscar-winning swan song The Boy and the Heron opened last Wednesday in China to take advantage of the country’s Qingming public holiday and by Sunday it had earned $73 million — more than its totals in both Japan ($61 million) and North America ($46.6 million).
The Studio Ghibli film easily overtook Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. holdover monster movie Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire, which brought in $36 million over the four-day holiday weekend. Godzilla vs. Kong‘s total now sits at $93.5 million, the biggest haul by a Hollywood movie in China in many months, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
Chinese ticketing app Maoyan currently projects The Boy and the Heron to top out at $106.5 million and Godzilla vs. Kong to finish with $121.9 million — but the company’s estimates are often subject to considerable revision.

Oscar-winning Japanese animation “The Boy and the Heron” opened its wings in mainland Chinese theaters in midweek and soared to the top of the box office.
Data from multiple local tracking sources show the Miyazaki Hayao-directed fantasy-adventure accounting for more than half of all cinema revenues on both Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday it garnered $13.8 million, according to estimates from Ent Group. By 6.30pm on Thursday, ticket sales firm Maoyan was showing the title as having grown its two-day running total to RMB254 million or $35.2 million.
While films mostly open on Fridays in China, “The Boy and the Heron” was given a Wednesday outing in order to play into the three-day Qingming public holiday. The break is traditionally a time when Chinese people sweep clean the graves of their ancestors, but it has also become something of a family-oriented holiday and at least three other films released on Wednesday.

To say that Suzume is one of the best anime movies to have ever been created wouldn’t be a lie considering the tremendous ratings the film has earned from almost all platforms. Encircling the life of a young teenager of the same name who sets out to save Japan through her ability to see supernatural forces, the 2022 masterpiece was a critically commended blockbuster.

The film will open in China on March 29, some two weeks after the Oscars ceremony, where it is in the running for five Academy Awards including best picture, director, actress (for Sandra Hüller), screenplay and editing. “Anatomy of a Fall” also just won a pair of Golden Globes for foreign-language film and screenplay (for Triet and Arthur Harari); and is vying for seven BAFTAs and 11 Cesar Awards (France’s top film honors).
“Anatomy of a Fall” was passed over by France’s Oscar selection committee in favor of “The Taste of Things,” but embraced by Oscar voters. Its stateside awards campaign has been championed by North American distributor Neon.

Japan’s cinema box office edged slightly forward in 2023 after a strong rebound in 2022, but the business remains at levels below record-breaking 2019, which was the last normal year before the Covid pandemic.
Annual figures were released on Tuesday by the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (Eiren), with the ‘2023’ data idiosyncratically covering the period from the beginning of December 2022 to the end of November.
Ticket sales grew by 2% from 152 million in 2022 to 155 million in 2023. Gross box office in local currency climbed by 4% from JPY213 billion to JPY221 billion. With the Japanese Yen languishing at multi-year lows that was equivalent to $1.5 billion in dollar terms.
The 2023 admissions figure is 20% below 2019’s 195 million. The 2023 gross box office total is 15% below 2019’s JPY261 trillion, which was also a time when the Japanese currency was worth vastly more against the American dollar.

Japan’s box office climbed 4 percent to a post-pandemic high of $1.5 billion (221.5 billion yen) in 2023, driven again by a strong slate of anime and a steady return to theaters. Hollywood films maintained the same market share of around 31 percent as the previous year, though a very weak yen reduced earnings in dollar terms.
The Japanese currency falling toward the 150-mark against the greenback means that when converted, the annual box office fell from last year’s $1.64 billion even though takings in yen climbed from 213 billion yen. Imported fare (676 films) took a total of $452 million, versus $995 million for 555 domestic productions.
The figures were announced in Tokyo on Tuesday by the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan, locally referred to as Eiren.

Sci-fi fantasy comedy “Alienoid 2” opened on top of the South Korean box office with $3.57 million on a weekend that otherwise saw five animation titles and a political documentary in the top ten.
The big-budget, time-traveling “Alienoid 2” earned $3.57 million between Friday and Sunday with a market share of 39% and $4.77 million over its opening five days, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. Imax reports that some $370,000 of the film’s total was earned from 24 Imax screens.
The film was made as a two-parter. The first instalment of “Alienoid” was one of the biggest flops of 2022. It opened with a $5.19 million weekend in July that year. But it suffered terrible reviews and word of mouth and finished with just $12.2 million. Director Choi Dong-hoon has recently spent several weeks pushing the message that the second part is better than the first.

“Wish,” which has slowly been rolling out worldwide since a late November start in North America, made a respectable $3.29 million debut between Friday and Sunday according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). After five days on release in Korea, it has garnered $4.57 million.

“12.12: The Day,” the political thriller that finished 2023 as the year’s top-grossing title, earned another $1.99 million in third place over the latest weekend. Since releasing on Nov. 23, it has amassed a total of $93.1 million and been seen by 12.5 million people.

The country recorded its highest cinema admissions in four years.
China took $7.7bn (RMB54.9b) at the box office in 2023, representing an 83% year-on-year increase and the highest cinema admissions in four years, but still 14.5% behind pre-pandemic 2019.
Local audiences continued to show their unwavering support for local productions, which claimed all the top 10 slots in the annual chart. The biggest among them were two Chinese New Year releases, historical mystery Full River Red and sci-fi The Wandering Earth 2, which both surpassed the landmark RMB4bn ($562m) mark.
Half of the top 10 were local summer hits, including crime drama No More Bets,...

This marks the seventh year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 predictions for Oscars Best Animated Feature.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

Hong Kong saw “A Guilty Conscience” become the highest-grossing film of all time at its local box office. But the wider cinema market in Hong Kong remained stuck far below pre-pandemic levels.
Data from Hong Kong Box Office Limited, a joint venture between Motion Picture Industry Association (Mpia) and the Hong Kong Theatres Association, showed annual cinema revenue of Hk$1.43 billion ($184 million) in 2023.
That was a 25% improvement on 2022, when the industry was battered by on-off closures due to government Covid-control measures, and managed only Hk$1.14 billion ($146 million). But the 2023 score also remained 25% shy of 2019, the last pre-pandemic year, when box office reached Hk$1.92 billion ($246 million).
Hyper-local courtroom drama, “A Guilty Conscience” earned Hk$115 million ($14.7 million), but it was the only local title to make it into the territory’s top ten chart in 2023. Next in line were “Oppenheimer” (Hk$72.8 million), “Mission: Impossible -Dead Reckoning Part 1” (Hk$60.5 million), “The Super Mario...
