Prime Video is gearing up for the heist of the century with Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner. The streamer has given a series order for the new drama Haven, about an ordinary office worker who finds herself at the center of a high-stakes crime.
“A typical workday at a pension fund investment company, Lochmill Capital, is upended when violent thieves burst in and force Zara (played by Turner) and her best mate Luke (Saltburn’s Archie Madekwe) to execute their demands,” reads the synopsis. Sophie Turner hasn’t acted a whole lot since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019. She was in a Quibi show called “Wilderness,” had a viral cameo in Netflix movie “Do Revenge,” and was part of the ensemble in the Max limited series “The Staircase.” But she hasn’t had a lead role in a prominent series of her own.
But that’s changing, as Turner has signed on to star in “Haven” (working title), a British crime thriller that’s coming to Prime Video.
Turner will play Zara, an ordinary employee at a pension fund management company called Lochmill Capital, who is thrust into an extraordinary situation when a gang of thieves invade the office and force her and her friend Luke to transfer billions of pounds worth of pension funds. Meanwhile, Dci Rhys, a recently relapsed gambling addict, has to stave off his own financial ruin while he investigates the complex,...

Those who don’t follow professional wrestling may not appreciate just how tough and grueling it is. It isn’t enough to be on the road 200+ days a year, getting dropped on your head or your back every night, dealing with injuries, losing your spot on the roster, and worse. If you’ve seen films like The Iron Claw, The Wrestler, or the old Beyond the Mat documentary, you know that professional wrestling is grind like no other.
But the other aspect that goes underappreciated is how much wrestling relies on acting. If you have any hope of making it big, it isn’t enough to be able to do a tope suicida or Texas Cloverleaf on the way to a 5-star mat classic. You have to be able to act your role, day in and day out. Often, you have to act live, in front of an audience of thousands,...

Most of the buzzed-about network dramas of the 1990s have been largely forgotten these days.
ER and NYPD Blue might have been the talk of the town during the Clinton years, but in the Biden age, they're seldom discussed outside of retrospectives about what the cast members are up to these days.
Interestingly, the network shows from that era that have loomed largest in the public's memory are the ones that might broadly be described as "supernatural mysteries."
We're talking about Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and, of course, The X-Files.
In fact, one could argue that no network drama from the past 30 years has proved as enduring and influential as the saga of Mulder and Scully.
The X-Files ran for nine seasons and inspired two feature films, a spinoff series (The Lone Gunmen), and a 2016 revival, with a second reboot rumored to be in the works courtesy of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."

Prime Video’s new thriller series Wilderness is already making a splash by having a truly great bop as its theme tune in Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do’, but there’s much more to enjoy here than that. The raunchy show follows a young writer called Liv, whose dream life with her handsome and wealthy husband falls apart when they move stateside and she catches him cheating on her. Their “make or break” dream holiday is set to crumble into a nightmare, albeit a scenic one, when Liv sets out to get her revenge.

This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers.
Trekkies love to argue about everything, especially the best and worst parts of their favorite franchise. But while favorites might be up for constant debate, most agree on two of the worst episodes of all time: “Haven” from Star Trek: The Next Generation and “Move Along Home” from Deep Space Nine, both part of the otherwise acclaimed series’ beleaguered first seasons. The episodes aired while their respective series were still figuring themselves out, indulging in embarrassing ideas that were quickly brushed under the rug.
But as has been made abundantly clear over the past few years, the creators of animated comedy series Lower Decks don’t forget anything. So it’s no surprise that the Betazoid Gift Box from “Haven” and the Chula Game from “Move Along Home” make a return in the latest Lower Decks episode, “In the Cradle of Vexilon.

Given how often it happens, the makers of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Picard" appear to abide by a strict mandate that every episode includes a certain number of references to older "Star Trek" shows. Several times, when said shows seem to be falling behind this presumed quota, the showrunners will include a scene in a literal warehouse that is stacked with objects, corpses, or other tchotchkes from throughout "Trek" history. This happened in the "Lower Decks" season 2 episode "Kayshon, His Eyes Open," which featured a menagerie of stuffed creatures and skeletal remains of various "Star Trek" characters, all just hanging out in the background. Fans may remember the enormous desiccated skeleton of Spock 2 as he appeared in the "Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "The Infinite Vulcan," as well as a Gorn skeleton, the skeleton of Abraham Lincoln (perhaps rescued from the events of "The Savage Curtain"), a taxidermied M-113 creature,...

That’s where joshseki comes in. Because joshseki has two sisters, and whenever he sees a dude being shitty to a woman in his game lobby, he thinks of them.

A new production company is on the mission to bring weird science to life through story.

The Los Angeles and Palo Alto-based company has already begun working on scripted television series, documentaries and literary adaptation.
“We are living in an unparalleled moment of scientific advancement,” said Eagleman. “From brains to space to genetics, there are endless mind-blowing stories to share. In a world that sometimes seems upside-down, science can be a source of great inspiration, wonder, and belief.”
In addition to his scientific work, Eagleman is a best-selling author, Guggenheim fellow and Emmy-nominated screenwriter.

Actor Zoe Saldana had to make out with Sam Worthington when the pair collaborated in Avatar. But the conditions the two actors were put under for the make-out scene made for a very awkward experience.
Why Zoe Saldana felt ridiculous kissing Sam Worthington in ‘Avatar’ Zoe Saldana | Allen J. Schaben / Getty Images
Saldana has had to kiss many co-stars in her long career. But kissing Worthington in 2009’s Avatar might have proven to be one of the actor’s strangest experiences. Saldana and Worthington both played members of James Cameron’s fictional alien race The Na’vi.
Both Saldana and Worthington had to wear special equipment in order to bring their characters, and their intimacy, to the big screen. But this equipment often got in the way of her and Worthington’s fictional love-making.

HBO’s latest hit series The Last of Us now officially has a soundtrack for its first season, a massive, 66-song compilation of all the music scoring the post-apocalyptic tale. Check it out below.
After working on the original The Last of Us video game, composer Gustavo Santaolalla returns for the HBO series, joined by fellow artist David Fleming. In an upcoming interview with Consequence, Santaolalla describes his approach to the soundtrack, saying, “The process of adapting, it was more in a way like craftwork than actually a new creation, because the themes were there, those things are there, like the characters, it wasn’t about creating a new job, it wasn’t about finding what is interesting. For example, in seeing how Pascal and Bella, they’re different than the actors that played the voices, but at the same time, they keep the soul of the characters intact.”

A kind of sequel to his short film Haven, which concerned a radical treatment program that offered drug users free medical-grade heroin, Colin Askey’s Love in the Time of Fentanyl is not an easy film to approach. The work of “harm reduction”––a concept that seems to have found some acceptance in urban centers throughout Canada, including Vancouver and Toronto (as chronicled in Hugh Gibson’s The Stairs)––the idea begins with the assumption that if addicts are going to use regardless, why not give them a clean, safe space to take drugs and prevent overdoses?
The Downtown Eastside clinic in Vancouver began as a pop-up and has since moved into a storefront run by Ronnie, a bearded Gen X-er who earns the name “Narcan Jesus.” He remains haunted by those he can’t save and the weight of the work. Initially a skeptic of harm reduction, Ronnie now...

Armin Shimerman has been with the "Star Trek" franchise for almost 35 years now, ever since he first appeared as a Ferengi named Letek in an early episode of "The Next Generation" season 1. That episode, "The Last Outpost," originally aired in October 1987, but Shimerman would rather you forget about it and his other early "Trek" appearances and just count forward from when he played the scheming Ferengi bartender Quark on "Deep Space Nine."
In "The Next Generation," Shimerman also played the non-Ferengi face on a Betazoid gift box in the later season 1 episode, "Haven." He would pop up again as a different Ferengi leader named Bractor in the season 2 episode "Peak Performance," but it wasn't until "Deep Space Nine" premiered in January 1993 that Shimerman really came into his own as a series regular by playing Quark. In a recent convention appearance at Fanboy Expo (via TrekMovie.com), Shimerman addressed his first...

Knoxville Horror Film Fest 2021: "The Knoxville Horror Film Fest will present its lucky 13th annual weekend of cinematic scares Thursday, October 21 through Sunday, October 24, with events split between Maryville, Tennessee’s Parkway Drive-In and the festival’s home base at Central Cinema in Knoxville.
It was Covid-era necessity that drove last year’s premier programming to the Parkway, but it’s pure pleasure that brings it back for a second year. Thursday night’s lineup will kick off the festival with a triple feature of John Carpenter’s ghostly 1980 classic The Fog, Rialto Pictures’ new 40th anniversary 4K restoration of Joe Dante’s The Howling (1981), and heavy metal horror cult item Trick Or Treat (1986). Friday night will continue the fun with the trailers of the 2021 Khff Grindhouse Grind-out, followed by another triple feature of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), An American Werewolf In London (1981) and SFX genius Phil Tippett’s years-in-the-making Mad God.

Please don't send any Harveys my way.
On SurrealEstate Season 1 Episode 2, we learned that imaginary friends could often have devious natures.
So much for nurturing your child's imagination. In the case of a Harvey, you might be leading your entire family to the grave.
SurrealEstate maintained its whimsy and humor the second episode out.
It also continues to resemble beloved shows that have come before, but I'd like to see a little more involvement from the secondary characters.
I'd mentioned Warehouse 13 and Haven, which were known to focus on the leads quite heavily. But Haven, especially, had a great supporting lineup of characters whose skills were imperative to helping the leads determine which direction to go to solve cases.
A reader brought up Eureka, and if things continue along this path, we won't see that same kind of unity on SurrealEstate.
Maybe I just don't understand what each agent...

Well, that was the start of something with a lot of potential.
With Tim Rozon leading a talented cast of fellow Canadians, SurrealEstate Season 1 Episode 1 set the expectations for what the show will be all about.
It feels similar to other Syfy shows off the bat, such as Warehouse 13 and Haven, and that's good company.
Luke Roman runs the Roman Real Estate Agency, where he and his team offer specialized services to homeowners who find it hard to sell their homes, let alone get top dollar.
These people are among the unlucky few who have stigmatized properties that make unburdening their homes a tremendous burden on them and those who show interest in a property.
A stigmatized property is one whose value has been affected by unfortunate occurrences -- ragic events associated with the property, including but not limited to murder, suicide, even accidental death or the perception, either real or imagined,...

Newcomer Lola Tung is set as the lead in The Summer I Turned Pretty, Amazon’s TV adaptation of Jenny Han’s YA novel series. Rachel Blanchard (You Me Her), Jackie Chung (Coming Home Again) and Christopher Briney (Dali Land) also are set as series regulars in the eight-episode Prime Video series, a co-production of Amazon Studios and wiip.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is a multigenerational drama that hinges on a love triangle between one girl and two brothers, the ever-evolving relationship between mothers and their children, and the enduring power of strong female friendship. It is a coming-of-age story about first love, first heartbreak, and the magic of that one perfect summer.
Tung’s Belly, the series lead, used to be gawky and awkward, but this summer she turns 16 and she is starting to turn heads-and it’s taking some getting used to. Conrad Fisher, played by Briney,...

Writer-director Mike Nichols, then known for Broadway comedies and his satirical work with Elaine May, surprised everyone by choosing Edward Albee’s incendiary psychodrama Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? as his motion picture debut. Filmed on the campus of Smith College in Massachusetts, it’s a cinematic one-two punch thanks to the gloves-off performances of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor (who bulked-up to a fighting weight of 155 lbs). Taylor snagged an Oscar (along with co-star Sandy Dennis and cinematographer Haskell Wexler—Burton and George Segal were nominated but lost). Albee had wanted James Mason and Bette Davis for the leads (in 1980 Nichols and May themselves starred in a New Haven revival).

Exclusive: Netflix won a hotly contested auction for The Bluff, a pitch that will be written as a star vehicle for Zoe Saldana, with Frank E. Flowers directing. Joe Ballarini will write the script with Flowers. Several streamers chased this one and the upfront commitment for those scribes is seven figures.
Project is about pirates in the Caribbean, but this is no family film. The drama is set in the Cayman Islands in the 1800s and Saldana plays Ercell, a Caribbean woman whose secret past is revealed when her island is invaded by vicious buccaneers. The intention is to blend visceral action and historical fiction to create a real action vehicle as the heroine fights against the atrocities committed by the pirates. There are strong roles for a second woman who is part of the vigilante campaign, and the nasty lead pirate. Saldana and Flowers previously teamed in the 2004 drama Haven.

Amazon has ordered a series adaptation of Jenny Han’s YA novel “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” Variety has learned.
Amazon has given the show an eight-episode order. Han wrote the pilot for the series and will also serve as executive producer and co-showrunner. Gabrielle Stanton will also executive produce and co-showrun. Karen Rosenfelt will also serve as executive producer along with Paul Lee, Nne Ebong, and Hope Hartman for wiip. The series is a co-production between Amazon Studios and wiip.
“The Summer I Turned Pretty is many years in the making, and I’m so excited to tell Belly’s story in 2021,” said Han. “For the longtime book fans, I think it will have been worth the wait. For those newly discovering the Summer series, I hope you fall in love with these characters and this place that is so dear to my heart.”

As subscription-based, on-demand gaming services have gained popularity in recent years, both PlayStation Now and Xbox Game Pass have established their positions at the top of the market by offering a variety of content and great value for subscribers. There’s just one burning question demands to be answered: Which one is better?
It’s a tough one. Each has advantages over the other – Ps Now has more attractive pricing plus its library of 700+ titles makes Game Pass’ library of around 200 look paltry in comparison, whereas Xbox Game Pass tends to offer more recent games as well as including first party titles on the day of release.
It’s hard to say which one is better overall, but taken one month at a time, we may get our answer. So join us as we look at what’s been added and what was removed from each service and declare which...
