Sue Naegle and Ali Krug are re-teaming for a new venture.
The former Annapurna duo and longtime collaborators have launched Dinner Party Productions and signed a multiple-year overall deal with Universal Content Productions.
Naegle, the former content chief at Megan Ellison’s company, and Krug, who was co-head of TV alongside her at Annapurna, will develop and produce new projects for UCP for both NBCUniversal-owned platforms as well as third-party buyers.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Naegle and Krug — who have worked together for 13 years — said the appeal of being able to sell to outside buyers was part of why they wanted to sign with the Beatrice Springborn-led division that is housed within Pearlena Igbokwe’s Universal Studio Group. (Read the Q&a, below.)
As part of the pact, Naegle and Krug have boarded Peacock’s adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s New York Times best-seller The Five-Star Weekend.

Enlightened was more than just the title of the HBO TV series Laura Dern starred in from 2011-2013. It’s also the state of being the actress and her future producing partner, Jayme Lemons, found themselves in after Dern served as an executive producer and Lemons a first-time producer on the comedy-drama.
“Once we had that experience on Enlightened, we both felt like we have all of these other passions, maybe it’s time we focus more on getting these projects done,” Dern tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below.
Thus the creation of Jaywalker Pictures in 2017, Dern and Lemons’ production company whose projects span genres. From the 2020 documentary The Way I See It, about the life of former Chief Official White House Photographer Pete Souza; and the Academy Award-winning short If Anything Happens I Love You, about two parents grieving their daughter who was killed in a school shooting,...

Mike White’s acclaimed comedy drama The White Lotus will soon commence production on season three, the cast has now been confirmed.
Mike White has one of the most eclectic filmographies in Hollywood. From his days as an indie darling in the late 1990s when he penned films like the terrific Chuck and Buck, The Good Girl and Orange County, to big budget blockbusters like Richard Linklater’s School Of Rock, before returning to smaller fare like Year Of The Dog and Brad’s Staus. He then turned to television, scripting two seasons of Enlightened starring Laura Dern.
In 2021, White created what has become his most acclaimed work, The White Lotus, which has amassed a plethora of Emmys across its run so far, both for White’s writing and Jennifer Coolidge’s performance as Tanya McQuoid.

Kyrie Irving — the singular basketball talent and moth-to-the-flame of NBA controversy — has embarked on a rebranding campaign with his new corporate benefactor, Chinese apparel giant Anta. Irving is now the superstar face of Anta Basketball — in a deal that also makes him the brand’s chief creative officer. In late September, Irving and Anta unveiled Kyrie’s new logo called “Enlightened Warrior.”
This Anta debut turns the page on a disturbing chapter in Irving’s career. But has his deal with the Chinese shoe giant simply opened the lid on even darker controversy?...

I think I’m writing for people roughly in my position: respectful, interested, only slightly informed. People who might have unexpected or unhelpful resonances with a book about different lives and different traditions on the other side of the world. (Do those old-fashioned clothes from Southeast Asia look like epic fantasy garb to anyone but me?)
I say that up front. If this is your culture, your tradition…well, I hope not to be wrong, or infuriating. But I doubt I will be helpful or insightful; you know this better than I do. Reviewers don’t say that often enough, I think: what you see always depends on where you stand, so I want to be clear about where I’m standing and the things I can see from there.
Enlightened is a graphic novel, published for middle grade readers, about the life of the Buddha, Prince Siddhartha. It’s by Sachi Ediriweera,...

Exclusive: Max Hollman, a rising star drama executive at HBO, has left the premium cable network to join Middle Child Pictures, the film and TV company launched recently by David Bernad. Hollman will continue to work with HBO as he sets off to run television for Middle Child Pictures as Producer/Executive through a first-look TV deal the company has signed with HBO and A24.
Under that pact, HBO will get first crack at Middle Child Pictures’ TV development, with A24 serving as the studio on projects that the network takes in. For shows that don’t go to HBO, A24 can come on board and sell them elsewhere.
Hollman, who started his career as an assistant in the television department at CAA, had been at HBO for almost eight years, rising from assistant to coordinator, manager, director and, most recently, VP, drama programming. During his tenure,...

HBO’s potential deal to license a slew of library titles to rival Netflix, as revealed by Deadline, was met with derision by some, another example of Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav selling off the crown jewels to hit his savings targets.
However, industry experts have urged that the move could actually open the door to streaming profitability and increase residuals for creatives, leading to a larger digital détente.
Talk of such a move was a surprise, largely given the frostiness between the two rivals, which have been battling it out on the talent and awards front for the last few years, but optics aside, a deal, which was described as “groundbreaking” by one source, could be good for consumers and the town.

It certainly isn’t a stretch to consider any Todd Haynes filmography part of the Queer Oscar Canon. The filmmaker brought us La Blanchett in the all-timer Carol and as a gender-bent Bob Dylan in I’m Not There. He directed Laura Dern and Kate Winslet on the small screen in prestige HBO offerings Enlightened and Mildred Pierce (respectively). And I know I’m not alone in my extreme anticipation for his forthcoming May/December, his third collaboration with primary muse Julianne Moore. If the proverbial Dorothy is 'a great actress or queer icon of her generation' than the man is a *friend* of Dorothy. But my favorite, and an early example of how a queer perspective permeates through his style, enriching the work, is Far From Heaven.
Far From Heaven, a juggernaut on the 2002 Critics Circuit, eventually was nominated for four Academy Awards- including one for Haynes’ himself for Best Original Screenplay.

You know Michaela Watkins, right? She was on “Saturday Night Live” and was the star of “Casual” and “Enlightened.” You’ve heard her voice work on “Big Mouth” and “Robot Chicken,” and she was in indie gems like “In a World,” “Sword of Trust,” and “Thanks for Sharing.” You know her from somewhere.
“I get to work all the time, and nobody really knows who I am,” she recently told IndieWire. And, as Watkins makes clear, that’s no complaint. She’s got a great acting career, one that started quite late by Hollywood standards. A former member of improv troupe The Groundlings, she spent a decade bumping around in single-episode, minor-role stints before spending a year as an “SNL” featured player in 2008.
From there, she spent a season on “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” starring opposite another former SNL star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus — who’s now her co-star in...

Last year, John Valerio (“The White Lotus”) won the Emmy Award for Best Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Limited Series, but he readily admits he “never imagined” his name would be called. “The proof of that is that I was not wearing a tux … I just wore a suit that I had and yeah, I was just like completely shocked,” he tells us. The editor calls the experience “very surreal” and that it was “all a blur.” Now Valerio has a chance of winning a bookend Emmy for Season 2 of the HBO series, which is switching categories from Limited Series to Drama Series. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As the show’s editor, does Valerio actually get to travel to the exotic locations like Hawaii (for Season 1) and Sicily (for Season 2)? “I got to go to Sicily,” he confirms. “I was there for about a month and a half,...

Laura Dern almost lived out her role in Noah Baumbach’s semi-autobiographical divorce drama “Marriage Story.”
Dern, who won the Academy Award for her turn in the 2019 film, revealed that her mother, actress Diane Ladd, was determined to encourage Dern to become a lawyer instead of pursuing a film career. Dern, whose father is Bruce Dern, began acting as a child and played an extra alongside Ladd in Martin Scorsese’s “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.”
“I fell in love with it,” Dern said during “Live With Kelly & Mark” (via Entertainment Weekly). “Scorsese let me be an extra, sitting at the counter watching these amazing artists work together.”
Ladd added during the talk show appearance, “I said no. I dissuaded her. I said, ‘No, honey, no, no, no.’ Look, be a lawyer, be a doctor. I said, ‘If you’re going to save somebody’s life as a doctor,...

One of Molly Shannon‘s most popular “Saturday Night Live” characters of all time is Mary Katherine Gallagher, the socially awkward schoolgirl who “sticks [her] fingers under [her] arms and smells ’em like that.” During NBC’s latest “SNL” promo video (watch above), this week’s host tells cast member Ego Nwodim and musical guest Jonas Brothers that if they’re “nervous” to be working with her, all they need to do is follow her lead. Cut to everyone smelling their own armpits in synchronicity.
Shannon will host the Saturday, April 8 episode of NBC’s late night sketch comedy series. It’s her second time hosting the program after a 2007 episode with musical guest Linkin Park. Of course, Shannon got her big break on “Saturday Night Live” in 1995 as a regular cast member, staying for seven seasons until 2001. This post contains spoilers for "The White Lotus" seasons 1 and 2.
It's official, Lotus-heads: the highly anticipated third season of "The White Lotus" will be set in Thailand, Variety reports. Each season promises a new location and cast centering around a unique theme, so it's impossible to say for sure where this next season will go. Even still, there's been lots of hints dropped in the press and in the series itself about what season 3 might have in store. Luckily for you, I did a little digging and came up with some educated guesses so you don't have to.
Most Thai people practice Buddhism, a beautiful and ancient religion that has long been co-opted by wealthy Westerners. At its core, the HBO series is a satire of the uber-rich, and the imperialism of Buddhist practices is rife with potential for humor as well as deeply profound introspection.

Laura Dern is finally addressing her sneaky "White Lotus" cameo. During a "Jimmy Kimmel Live" appearance on Jan. 5, the "Big Little Lies" star discussed her brief but memorable voice performance as Abby Di Grasso in the HBO show's second season. Dern shared that she landed the offscreen role due to her longtime friendship with "White Lotus" creator Mike White, with whom she cocreated the HBO series "Enlightened." "It was amazing," Dern told Kimmel. "I loved doing it, and I loved literally recording into my phone and [White] saying, 'Just go to town. Be as angry as you want.'"
Dern certainly took White's direction to heart. About 20 minutes into the season two premiere, Dominic Di Grasso (Michael Imperioli) hops on the phone with his estranged wife, Abby, who opted out of their family vacation to Sicily following his latest act of infidelity. A dozen years ago, Laura Linney became the fifth of seven actresses to conquer two lead TV Golden Globe categories by winning Best Comedy Actress for “The Big C” two years after being honored for her work on the limited series “John Adams.” Following her unsuccessful Best Drama Actress bid for Netflix’s “Ozark” in 2021, she now has a second chance to blaze a trail as the first winner of all three Golden Globe awards available to lead TV actresses. Since her show has come to an end and she is up against a slate of category newcomers, she should now stand a better chance of standing out to voters and achieving this impressive feat.
Linney came up short in 2021’s drama actress race against “The Crown” star Emma Corrin, who has passed her role of Princess Diana on to current supporting nominee Elizabeth Debicki. Her other three former challengers...

This post contains spoilers for the Season Two finale of The White Lotus, which is streaming now on HBO Max.
“Arrivederci,” the finale of The White Lotus Season Two, was in many ways nothing like “Departures,” the conclusion to the first season of Mike White’s acidic comedy about One Percenters run amok on vacation.
Though both finales featured the death of a central character — last year it was Armond the contempt-filled resort manager, this time it’s Tanya the narcissistic heiress — and the bloody end of Jennifer Coolidge’s...

“The White Lotus” Season 2 just wrapped up on HBO, bringing closure to weeks of tension threaded throughout the second installment of Mike White’s Emmy-winning anthology series. But one of the biggest questions most fans have after that finale is, what about “The White Lotus” Season 3? Well, here’s everything we know about the third season so far.
It’s Definitely Happening
There will absolutely be a “White Lotus” Season 3, as HBO officially renewed the series for a third season on Nov. 18, just a few weeks into Season 2’s airing. Indeed, ratings and critical reception to Season 2 were strong, so HBO was quick to order up another course of vacation intrigue.
The first season was initially billed as a limited series (and won Emmys as such), but was so popular that White and HBO decided to expand “The White Lotus” into an anthology show. Speaking of which…

To everyone who has been patiently waiting week-to-week for the next episode of The White Lotus’ second season to drop and get their fill of decadence, deception and discontent among filthy rich holidaymakers, Will Sharpe is Ethan, the subdued and recently minted millionaire.
On a luxurious vacation in an awkward quartet alongside his fun-zapping wife Harper (Aubrey Plaza), morally questionable and arrogant college friend Cameron (Theo James), and Cameron’s seemingly shallow partner Daphne (Meghann Fahy), Ethan is a character whose calm and collected persona looks increasingly like it’s about to erupt in dramatic fashion.
Outside the five-star opulence of Mike White’s multi-Emmy winning creation The White Lotus, however, the British actor/writer/director is best known for his work behind the camera, most notably a trio of eccentricity-tinged comedy dramas (all, coincidentally, starring Olivia Colman). By “The White Lotus” Season 2 Episode 5, Tanya is so distraught with her relationship with Greg that she tells Portia she reached out to a divorce lawyer to get the marriage annulled — but even the HBO series’ biggest fans might not know how this subtle name drop connects to creator Mike White.
“You know, I talked to Billy Offer last night about getting the marriage annulled,” Tanya said at breakfast with Portia before the pair sail off to Palermo with Quentin and his nephew, Jack, lamenting “how did I not see the signs, Portia?”
As it turns out, in real life Billy Offer works in the Indie Film Group at United Talent Agency (UTA) — and his father, Robert Offer, is Mike White’s entertainment lawyer.

Let the Dern-assaince continue.
This week alone, Oscar winner Laura Dern played Taylor Swift’s evil stepmother in the Cinderella-inspired music video “Bejeweled” and lent her voice to the first episode of “The White Lotus” Season 2 as the angry, estranged wife of Michael Imperioli.
Dern was the voice telling Imperioli’s character Dominic Di Grasso to “fuck off” in the October 30 episode. After Dominic arrives at the White Lotus Sicily hotel with his father Bert (F. Murray Abraham) and son Albie (Adam Dimarco), he makes a brief phone call to his estranged wife Abby, voiced by Dern. Abby was supposed to be on the trip with the three generations of Di Grasso men, but after their marriage hit the rocks, Abby stayed stateside. Will Abby (Dern) appear in the series down the road? Just add it to one of the many mysteries afoot in the latest season.

We may not know exactly who died in the ocean in "The White Lotus" season two yet, but viewers who tuned into the season premiere certainly witnessed a murder last night. Namely, Dominic's (Michael Imperioli) ex-wife (or very estranged wife) absolutely decimated the man via international phone call. In an intimidating and impressive demonstration of fury, the woman on the other end of the phone line screams at length about how she never wants Dominic to call her again – a wild contrast to the seemingly mild-mannered persona we've seen from him so far.
This brief interlude is the kind of performance that makes you stand up straight and pay close attention, especially because the actor on the other end of the phone seems to be ready to shred her vocal chords for the sake of a good performance. Who could be that committed to a brief off-screen cameo? Why, none other than Laura Dern.

More than a decade after becoming one of the few actresses to conquer two lead TV Golden Globe categories, Laura Linney could now make history as the very first winner of all three prizes available to female small screen leads. Having already snagged the 2009 Best TV Movie/Limited Actress (“John Adams”) and 2011 Best TV Comedy Actress (“The Big C”) trophies, she may soon complete her trifecta with a Best TV Drama Actress victory for “Ozark.” Although she did lose on her first Golden Globe nomination for the Netflix series in 2021, she might fare better this time against an entirely new slate of challengers.
Based on her work as money launderer Wendy Byrde on the fourth and final season of “Ozark,” Linney is currently ranked fifth in Gold Derby’s Best TV Drama Actress predictions. She has a significant statistical advantage in that she would be the third person in a...

Depending on how you looked at it, the success of “The White Lotus” Season 1 was either a blessing or a curse. For fans of Mike White’s cult series “Enlightened,” it felt like a second chance for the writer-director’s work to get the attention it deserved; to be more than a niche, unseen series that HBO would pull the plug on. But for those who believed HBO should’ve left another hit limited series in “Big Little Lies” firmly in the limited series realm (instead of following up with a disappointing second season), it felt like “The White Lotus” — which was billed as a limited series and competed as such at the Emmys — was tempting fate.
Luckily, “The White Lotus” Season 2 is an unequivocal success.
Now, for those who believed the show was just poor little rich people with problems, that opinion surely won’t change with this second...

Over the past seven years, Patricia Arquette has pulled off the impressive feat of scoring three Golden Globe wins in as many acting categories. After first being honored with the 2015 Best Film Supporting Actress prize for “Boyhood,” she received two television trophies for her work on the limited series “Escape at Dannemora” and “The Act”. Now, her dramatic performance on Apple TV+’s “Severance” could lead to her second supporting TV victory, which would make her only the fourth actress to ever achieve four Golden Globe wins in less than a decade.
Discounting non-competitive awards, the first woman to become a four-time acting Golden Globe champ in under 10 years was Helen Hunt. Her 1998 Best Film Actress win for “As Good As It Gets” was preceded by a trio of Best TV Comedy Actress triumphs for “Mad About You” (1994-1995; 1997). Her record of four victories across a four-year span was later matched by Sarah Jessica Parker,...

HBO’s The White Lotus took us by surprise last summer… but it shouldn’t have. After all, Mike White crafted another uncomfortably hilarious series a few years back with Enlightened, and here, with a sparkling cast populating his acid-tongued comedy of manners, Lotus ended up garnering more buzz and awards attention than Enlightened ever did. Now it’s become an anthology, and with Season 2 arriving on HBO this Sunday at 9/8c (I’ve seen the first two episodes), the question is: Can White recapture the old magic with a new cast? Or is Season 2 destined to feel like a...

For as much money and effort as she spends pretending that White Lotus hotels are the luxurious safe havens she so craves, Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) nonetheless sees them for what they truly are. “What a beautiful view!” she coos at the cliffside Sicilian seascape greeting her upon arrival. Then, in practically the same breath: “I wonder if anyone’s jumped from here.” As meticulously designed by television puppet-master Mike White, “The White Lotus” is the archetypal gilded cage, luring the rich and ambitious to its shores, only to dash them against the rocks with ruthless ease.
Before the HBO series was a word-of-mouth hit in summer 2021, turned recent Emmys sensation, it was an experimental season of TV that cannily used a single location to tell overlapping stories of restlessness, lust, anger and pain. Going on holiday can be magic. You work tirelessly, scrimping and saving along the way to take your family on the trip of a lifetime. Vacations aren't just an opportunity to see something new — whether it's an extraordinary slice of history, the most wonderful food you've ever tasted, or an escape to warmer weather — it's a vital chance to relax. Spending time with your family, your partner, and your friends, or even on a solo holiday, all have the potential to recharge and relax.
Of course, the very idea of a holiday means something different to everyone — and it varies hugely depending on how much money you've got to spend. We've all seen ads for hotels that offer unparalleled luxury — that come, of course, at an unparalleled price. In a time where inflation rises what feels like every minute, and income inequality is vast, there's more of an air of...

‘The White Lotus’ EP David Bernad Teases Season Two: “You Will Have No Idea Where the Show Is Going”

David Bernad and Mike White have been producing partners for 13 years — but their working relationship extends even further back than that.
Bernad began his production career in the mailroom at UTA, hustling to produce short films on nights and weekends. “I had this romantic notion of starting in the mailroom. I really wanted to start at the bottom and work my way up,” he explains. He met White through a mutual friend who was working at the time as White’s assistant; when she left the role, she insisted that her former boss interview Bernad. “I went over in my cheap suit, cheap shoes and interviewed with him. I thought it went great. Mike didn’t hire me. I later found out it was because he didn’t like my shoes. But the assistant, Rebecca, would not let Mike interview anyone else. So he finally hired me.

Chances are if you were watching HBO on Sunday nights last summer, you grooved to the most earworm-y main title music since “Mad Men” and wondered who blended those percussive beats to the haunting choral wails you just couldn’t get enough of while the cast’s names unfolded onto a palette of wallpaper seemingly blooming to life in sync with the main theme.

While Molly Shannon’s favorite scene for season two of “The Other Two” is in the episode where her character, Pat, has a nervous breakdown, it’s the part after that she loves. “I’m in the hospital bed and Streeter is like, I want to be there for you and do everything, and I’m like, yeah, I don’t like that. I don’t need that kind of energy,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). She elaborates that she loved how it combined her favorite kind of comedy with the most ideal scenario for shooting. “I love the combination of really funny and then touching. And it’s really fun to do a scene in bed all day, not having to stand up. If you’re going to be on the set for 14 hours, you might as well be in a bed acting.
