Music video director François Rousselet had to fake nearly 40 billboards on the Sunset Strip to create the Rolling Stones’ new clip for “Angry,” the first single off their upcoming Hackney Diamonds album.
Inspired by photographer Robert Landau’s 2016 book Rock ‘n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip — which documented the proliferation of ads for rock bands in West Hollywood between the Sixties and Eighties — Rousselet sought to pay homage to the heyday of the rock billboard for the clip. He culled footage from the Stones’ archives and digitally replaced ads...

Prolific Indian studio Applause Entertainment and Zindagi, the Indian subcontinent-focused programming block on streamer ZEE5 Global, have set a wide-ranging content partnership.
The partnership will create South Asian-themed content from across the subcontinent. The initial burst of productions will be in the Hindustani (combining Hindi and Urdu) language that is understood across the subcontinent. Production will then expand into some of the other local languages.
The partnership reunites former Star India colleagues Sameer Nair, managing director of Applause and Shailja Kejriwal, chief creative officer of special projects at Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, who greenlit Pakistan-themed shows “Churails,” “Dhoop Ki Deewar,” and “Qatil Haseenaon Ke Naam” and “Ladies & Gentlemen” from Bangladesh.
Though there is an existing platform in Zindagi, the partnership will follow the Applause practice of commissioning and producing series and films and then look to licence them. Development has been in progress for the past eight months and...

Astrud Gilberto, who was just 22 years old when her lovely, laid-back and sultry vocals on the jazzy bossa nova “The Girl from Ipanema” made the song a massive global hit and one of the most recognizable melodies of the 1960s, died Monday. She was 83.
Her death was announced to the media by a family friend, the musician Paul Ricci, who did not provide additional details.
Born on March 5, 1940, in Salvador, Bahia, and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Gilberto was virtually unknown to the wider public when she was recruited by producer Creed Taylor, saxophonist Stan Getz and her then-husband, guitarist Joao Gilberto, and to lend her vocals on two songs for Getz/Gilberto. The album, recorded in 1963, would have a huge impact on the popularization of bossa nova music, in no small measure due to of one of those songs featuring Astrud: “The Girl from Ipanema,” released as a...

Saturday Night Live has certainly had more episodes than the Star Wars series, but Luke Skywalker himself has yet to host a single one. But it’s not for lack of interest, as Mark Hamill would love the opportunity to host SNL. And now we really want to hear him say after commercial, “Ladies and gentlemen, Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes.”
In a new Esquire profile, Mark Hamill said he would gladly host SNL, although he wouldn’t want to force it. “It’s one of those things where if they asked me, you’d have to do it. You accept the challenge. But the fact that they don’t ask me is fine, because I’m perfectly happy to be in the audience and not have the pressure of being on live television like that.”
Mark Hamill has a theory, however, as to why he might have...

South Asian focused streamer ZEE5 Global has ambitious growth plans for the U.S., where it has just completed a year of operations. It envisages local commissions, English- and Spanish-language dubbing and subtitling and reaching deep into the South Asian diaspora through grassroots promotions.
“We want to be the one that is at the forefront of creating the crossover for South Asian content — the one that makes South Asian content go mainstream,” Archana Anand, chief business officer, ZEE5 Global, told Variety. “We want for the global audiences sitting in the U.S. to now start watching ZEE5 Global, including the Spanish audiences. So when we dub or when we subtitle we want to start subtitling in English and Spanish, and have those stories cross over.”
To achieve this, Anand is planning a two-pronged approach — to identify the ZEE5 content that has the ability to crossover, and commission local productions, something...

Considering the intense increase of online content recently and particularly after a pandemic that restricted screenings in actual cinemas to a bare minimum, it is no surprise that even some of the most cinematic filmmakers find themselves presenting their latest works in digital platforms. In that fashion, Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, probably the most recognizable figure of modern Bangladeshi cinema, premiered his first web series on Zee5 Global, titled “Ladies and Gentlemen”.
The story revolves around Sabila, a very beautiful young woman, who teaches dancing in an arts center in Dhaka. Sabila is married to Arif, who also works in the same service, although in another branch in a different location, but her main issue is her father who lives with them, but suffers from a continuously worsening dementia. In order to pay his medical bills, Sabila really needs to become a permanent employee, but sees other workers in the service,...
