American Nightmare follows the story of Denise Huskins and partner Aaron Quinn, the victims of a home invasion in 2015 in Vallejo, California, that resulted in Huskins’ kidnapping. However, the couple was quickly accused of staging it all, with Huskins being labeled “the real Gone Girl.” Directors Bernadette Higgins and Felicity Morris (The Tinder Swindler) set out to tell Huskins’ story piece by piece, highlighting law enforcement behavior, victim blaming and trial by media.
When did you first hear about Denise’s story and decide it’d be your next project?
Bernadette Higgins It was just after The Tinder Swindler was released and we’d already decided that we wanted our next project to be together. And Raw, the company that we made Tinder Swindler with, had actually been trying to get access to Denise and Aaron for about two years. They approached us with it and asked us if we’d like to co-direct it.

Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Imi on Thursday closed its £1.15 billion ($1.45 billion) acquisition of TV and film production powerhouse All3Media, the largest TV producer in the U.K., from Warner Bros. Exclusive: Netflix is returning to the wellspring of stories in which social media events bleed into real-world consequences.
The streaming service has again teamed with Raw TV, the British production company behind hit film The Tinder Swindler, to make a series with the working title This Blew Up.
Netflix declined to comment on the project, but Deadline understands that production is underway on a five-part series. Raw did not respond to a request for comment.
Each episode of This Blew Up will spotlight a successful company, individual, or event that fell from grace or spiraled out of control, with the linking factor being that the downfall was enabled or escalated by social media.
It is unclear what stories will be featured, but the series will contain elements of drama reconstruction as Netflix explores the social, economic, and cultural factors that led to unforeseen difficulties.

Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.
According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Digital i defines a “hit” as an original movie or a series that was watched by at least 30 percent of Netflix’s subscriber base in North America, EU, and Latam.
The long list of 2022 Netflix hits goes like this: “Wednesday” (61.8%), “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (53.3%), “Stranger Things 4” (48.0%), “The Adam Project” (47.9%), “Knives Out 2” (45.9%), “The Gray Man” (42.4%), “The Watcher” (41.9%), “The Tinder Swindler” (38.0%), “Inventing Anna” (37.5%), “The Sandman” (35.7%), “Senior Year” (35.6%), “1899” (34.7%), “Bridgerton” Season 2 (34.5%), “Troll” (34.0%), “Enola Holmes 2” (33.7%), “Luckiest Girl Alive” (33.4%), “Harry & Meghan” (32.7%), “Hustle” (32.6%), “The Man from Toronto” (31.5%), “Purple Hearts” (31.3%), “Me Time” (31.1%), “Day Shift” (31.0%), and “Falling for Christmas” (30.8%).

Former NBC Universal Television Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin is taking a job as VP of unscripted series at Netflix — reporting to Netflix VP of nonfiction series Brandon Riegg. It’s a bit of a reversal for the two execs: In 2010, Riegg joined NBC as vice president of alternative series & development, reporting to the heads of alternative programming there, who in turn reported to Gaspin.
It’s a return to the executive ranks for Gaspin, who most recently ran Gaspin Media as president. It was there that his output included Netflix’s “The Tinder Swindler,” as well as its “Rhythm & Flow.” His other credits included “The First Lady.”
“Jeff is such a huge talent, with so much experience across unscripted and television in general, and I couldn’t be more excited that he’s joining us,” said Riegg. “From ‘Rhythm & Flow’ to ‘Tinder Swindler,’ he’s already been part of the...

Exclusive: Netflix has found its new unscripted chief.
The streamer has hired Jeff Gaspin as VP Unscripted Series after a search for a high-profile figure to lead its burgeoning reality business.
It comes after Deadline revealed that Jenn Levy left the company last month and Brandon Riegg, who is VP Nonfiction Series, to whom Gaspin will report, started a search for top unscripted chief.
There were plenty of big unscripted names in the running for the position and Riegg is understood to have enquired about a number of execs overseeing unscripted for the broadcast networks and major studios.
Gaspin is a big get for Netflix given that he was previously Chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment from 2009-11.
However, his hire is less surprising considering he has been in business with Netflix and Riegg on a number of shows. He exec produced The Tinder Swindler, a true-crime series that was...

It has been two years since Jeff Zucker resigned from the top job at CNN over a consensual relationship with a network executive. Since then, he’s headed up RedBird Imi, a joint venture between Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital and Imi, an investment fund backed by the UAE. With a massive private equity war chest behind him, Zucker, 58, has been relentlessly hunting for deals. In a little over a year, he has invested in TV studio and motion picture company Media Res and news site Front Office Sports and just made an audacious bid to buy the U.K.’s Telegraph, provoking an outcry from journalists and politicians. On Feb. 17, Zucker’s firm bought powerhouse producer All3Media (which backed 1917, Fleabag, Squid Game: The Challenge, The Tinder Swindler and Penny Dreadful, among many other movies, docs and shows) for $1.45 billion. The mogul spoke to The Hollywood Reporter shortly after.

Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Imi has finalized a £1.15 billion ($1.45 billion) deal to acquire production powerhouse All3Media — the largest TV producer in the U.K. and the company behind such shows as reality series Squid Game: The Challenge and films like World War I epic 1917 — from owners Warner Bros. Discovery and John Malone’s cable and telecom giant Liberty Global.
The deal gives the new owner control over a big production business across scripted and unscripted series as well as theatrical movie titles. Earlier this year, RedBird Imi acquired a stake in Media Res, the studio behind the Apple TV+ shows The Morning Show and Pachinko, among other projects, which was founded by former HBO executive Michael Ellenberg.
Launched in late 2022 with a $1 billion war chest backed by RedBird Capital and Abu Dhabi’s Imi, RedBird Imi has the mandate to pursue investments in the news, entertainment and sports sectors.

Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but there’s a true crime docuseries on Netflix that has tongues wagging. The appetite for such endeavors appears bottomless; it seems we really enjoy depraved and aberrant behavior so long as we can hit pause and take a bathroom break every now and then. But sometimes, a series will sneak through that offers more than titillation, cheap thrills, and hyperventilating aesthetics. And so, American Nightmare, a swift, concise piece of work that even mixes in a dash of investigative reporting verve.

When the worst happens, those at the center of the story hope for justice — or, at the very least, to be believed. Unfortunately, the vast, knotty criminal justice system doesn’t always prove so reliable. On March 23, 2015, Denise Huskins and her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, were woken in the dead of night by a home invader. Huskins was kidnapped, and what transpired next in the terrifying tale is the subject of American Nightmare, the new docuseries from The Tinder Swindler filmmakers Felicity Morris and Bernadette Higgins.
“A lot of crime stories are very linear and obvious from the start. What was really intriguing about this story was the fact that every time you think you know what’s happened, there’s another twist, Higgins told Netflix. “Everyone thinks they know the ending from the start. In this story, few people would’ve ever predicted that the truth was indeed the truth.

Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers from “American Nightmare,” the three-part docuseries now streaming on Netflix.
“American Nightmare” may be difficult to watch at night. Netflix’s latest docuseries, from the filmmakers behind “The Tinder Swindler,” Felicity Morris and Bernadette Higgins, tells the story of a traumatic home invasion, abduction and the unreal events that unfolded from there.
In March 2015, Denise Huskins was abducted by a home invader from an apartment in Vallejo, Calif., and her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, was drugged with Nyquil at the same time, so he wasn’t able to report her kidnapping right away. As shown in the docuseries, the Vallejo police first viewed Quinn as the prime suspect after hours of questioning and attempting to get him to confess. Then Huskins showed up at her father’s house in Huntington Beach, hours south of Vallejo, after being missing for two days. She was quickly labeled...

Aaron Quinn and Denise Huskins may not be household names, but what happened to them was made ubiquitous by a widely-known association: “Gone Girl.”
The California couple made headlines in 2015, just one year after David Fincher’s adaptation of the popular Gillian Flynn novel. Huskins was kidnapped, her then-boyfriend telling the police a shocking story, and after 48 hours, she came home. Their ordeal was treated like a “real-life ‘Gone Girl'” by the media — as well as local and federal officers — and now retold in the Netflix docuseries “American Nightmare,” helmed by Bernadette Higgins and Felicity Morris.
When Quinn and Huskins’ story reached the duo behind “The Tinder Swindler,” it was once again via “Gone Girl”-association. Higgins told IndieWire she was struck by all the twists and turns in their story (which doesn’t end after Huskins came home), and the “sheer audacity” of law enforcement in the situation.

This article discusses the real life events behind American Nightmare and will therefore “spoil” the docuseries.
The events that unfold in Netflix true crime docuseries American Nightmare are hard to believe. I know that because I didn’t believe them. At least not at first.
On March 23, 2015, Aaron Quinn called 9-1-1 and reported that his girlfriend Denise Huskins had been kidnapped from their California home. According to an extremely groggy-sounding Quinn, a masked man wearing a wetsuit had broken in, tased them, injected them both with a sedative, and then taken off with a tied-up Denise. What was already a strange case only got stranger when Denise returned to her parents’ home a few days later, seemingly no worse for wear.
The police held a press conference in which they accused Quinn and Huskins of making the whole thing up and wasting precious law enforcement time and resources on a scam.

Trying to find a pattern in the chaos. I found something that was missed by the original investigators..." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for yet another unsettling true crime documentary film called Lover, Stalker, Killer, streaming in February on Netflix. This feature doc from Curious Films (Running with the Devil) and director Sam Hobkinson, deftly assembles the pieces of a mind-bending true tale of harassment, digital deception, and murder in America’s heartland. Lover, Stalker, Killer tells the twisted tale of a modern-day love triangle gone murderously wrong. Following up other docs like The Tinder Swindler, this one examines how Nebraska auto mechanic Dave Kroupa's 2012 attempt to get into the online dating put him in a digital love triangle that ended in murder. This looks crazy! I don't like the way they over-stylize this incident and add all the dramatic music, but it still seems like a fascinating...

Netflix further prized open the lid to its black box of data on Tuesday, with the streamer publishing a list of viewing figures for nearly 2,000 titles in its library.
The ratings dump covers the first half of 2023 and is measured as “hours viewed,” which departs from Netflix’s publication of “views,” the metric that it began using this year to rank its Top 10 lists.
Hours viewed puts shorter content at a significant disadvantage, while longer series (usually dramas) stand to benefit, but the figures do still offer a rare insight into Netflix subscriber behavior.
U.S. films and series unsurprisingly dominate Netflix’s list, with political conspiracy thriller The Night Agent topping the pile with 812M hours viewed. Little wonder Netflix renewed the series so swiftly.
The Brits were heavily represented, even if the first half of 2023 appeared a little light on new UK originals, with the likes of Sex Education,...

Exclusive: Netflix is on the verge of greenlighting French and German versions of reality format Surviving Paradise from Squid Game: The Challenge producer Studio Lambert and Raw TV, as it steps up its strategy in the premium unscripted space.
Nothing is signed but Deadline understands a deal is relatively close. If greenlit, the two versions would be filmed in their respective languages and Netflix would take a similar approach to The Circle, with Studio Lambert and Raw producing the different versions from a central hub.
In Surviving Paradise, 12 players believe they’re about to live it up for a summer at a beautiful villa. However, when they arrive, some remain in the villa while others are condemned to camping in the wilderness, and they all compete to enter the villa and win a $100,000 cash prize. Exclusive: It’s been a year of evolution for the European Film Market and its TV track Berlinale Series Market. Management is changing at sister festival Berlinale, with Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian exiting amid worries about finances, and the number of films screened reducing.
Meanwhile, Berlinale Series boss Julia Fidel has also departed, with the track was discontinued as an independent program. Series will instead be highlighted as part of the Berlinale Series Gala — a move the festival thinks brings it closer in line with other European film fests such as Cannes and Venice.
Notably for the TV biz, the Berlinale Series Market industry conference remains unaffected and will be running a full program. Last year the likes of The White Lotus exec producer David Bernad, Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak and The Tinder Swindler director Felicity Morris took the stage in sessions hosted by myself and Max Goldbart.

Raw TV, the production company behind “The Tinder Swindler,” have set a new true crime documentary with Amazon Prime Video about the 1978 murders of Chris Farmer and Peta Frampton.
Titled “Dead in the Water,” it follows the story of Farmer and Frampton, a young British couple who went missing in 1978 after going backpacking in Central America. Their bodies were eventually discovered 200 metres off the coast of Guatemala tied to engine parts.
They were quietly buried in a sprawling cemetery in the Guatemalan city of Puerto Barrios, with the location of their graves a mystery to their families for four decades — crucially impeding the investigation into their murders — before they were eventually rediscovered. Their killer has never been brought to justice.
“The letters they write and the tapes they sent home were filled with tales of exotic landscapes, cultural encounters, and the thrill of the unknown,” reads the synopsis for the doc.

The number of factual TV shows in the UK directed by women has gone backwards over the past two years despite a weighty campaign to improve gender representation.
According to research from the Diamond diversity data collector and featured in the We Are Doc Women campaign, the proportion of UK factual shows directed by women fell slightly to 24% between August 2019 and April 2022.
“It’s disappointing to see the overall number of women directors going down,” said a spokeswoman for the campaign group.”
There were, however, green shoots in We Are Doc Women’s research. For the year to April 2023, 47% of the shows of those who have signed the group’s 50/50 pledge were directed by women. Launched in October 2022, the pledge targets 50/50 gender representation by next year and counts the likes of the BBC, Channel 4, Amazon Prime Video, Louis Theroux’s Mindhouse Productions and Hilary Clinton’s HiddenLight amongst its signees.

It doesn’t look like ITV will be buying The Traitors producer All3Media.
In a statement issued to the stock market this morning, the UK commercial network said it “continues to monitor but is no longer actively exploring the possible acquisition” of the indie production giant, which is owned by Warner Bros Discovery and Liberty Global.
It didn’t give a specific reason for the change of heart, but added: “ITV plc assesses all potential value-creating M&a opportunities against its strict financial criteria and disciplined capital allocation framework.”
A month ago, ITV confirmed reports it was “actively exploring” a deal for All3 in a bid estimated to be worth around £1B ($1.3B).
That came after The Daily Telegraph first revealed in May that Warner Bros. Discovery and Liberty Global, which owns nearly 10% of ITV, had engaged bankers at Jp Morgan to conduct an auction for All3Media.

ITV “No Longer Actively Exploring” All3Media Acquisition From Warner Bros. Discovery, Liberty Global
ITV said on Friday that it was “no longer actively exploring” an acquisition of All3Media from Warner Bros. Discovery and Liberty Global. In June, the U.K. TV giant, led by CEO Carolyn McCall, had said it was “actively exploring” such a deal.
“There can be no certainty as to whether any transaction will take place, nor as to the terms of any such transaction,” ITV had emphasized back then. “A further announcement will be made if and when appropriate.”
This announcement, in the form of a statement to the London Stock Exchange, came early on Friday London time. “ITV plc confirms it continues to monitor but is no longer actively exploring the possible acquisition of All3Media,” the company said. And it highlighted: “ITV plc assesses all potential value-creating M&a opportunities against its strict financial criteria and disciplined capital allocation framework.”

Netflix’s megahit documentary series on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle failed to earn any Emmy nominations this morning, a snub that presumably will delight critics of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The six-part series Harry & Meghan directed by Liz Garbus was under consideration for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. The Emmy oversight is particularly glaring because the series scored extraordinary numbers for Netflix, racking up the second most viewing minutes of any documentary program on the streaming platform, behind only The Tinder Swindler.

ITV said Friday that it was “actively exploring” a potential acquisition of All3Media.
Entertainment conglomerates Warner Bros. Discovery and John Malone’s cable and telecom giant Liberty Global have been considering alternatives for their production joint venture All3Media, the largest TV production firm in Britain. Its titles also include the likes of The Traitors and The Tourist, as well as the 2019 film 1917.
Potential buyers previously mentioned by industry sources and analysts included ITV, but also the likes of production giants Fremantle and Banijay, as well as private equity firms.
In a Friday statement, ITV, led by CEO Carolyn McCall, noted “the recent media speculation and confirms that it is actively exploring the possible acquisition of All3Media.” It added: “There can be no certainty as to whether any transaction will take place, nor as to the terms of any such transaction. Spoiler Alert: These interviews contain spoilers from the Season 6 “Black Mirror” episodes “Joan Is Awful,” “Mazey Day” and “Beyond the Sea,” now streaming on Netflix.
Back after a four-year hiatus, the long-awaited sixth season of “Black Mirror” opens — fittingly — with “Joan is Awful,” an exploration of the dubious inner workings of a fictional streaming service called Streamberry.

Entertainment conglomerate Warner Bros. Discovery and John Malone’s cable and telecom giant Liberty Global are considering alternatives for their production joint venture All3Media, the largest TV production firm in Britain, whose titles include the likes of Fleabag, The Traitors and The Tourist, as well as the 2019 film 1917.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the partners are looking at a potential sale of All3Media, led by CEO Jane Turton, to a third party, but could also decide to have one of them buying out the other’s 50 percent stake. With the process at an early stage, a deal could also end up not materializing. Potential buyers mentioned by industry sources and analysts include the likes of ITV Studios, production giants Fremantle and Banijay, other media and entertainment players, as well as private equity firms. A deal for All3Media, which owns more than 50 production banners, including The Tinder Swindler and other documentaries maker Raw,...

All3Media, the British super-producer behind hits including The Traitors and 1917, is up for sale.
Owners Warner Bros. Discovery and Liberty Global have engaged bankers at Jp Morgan to conduct an auction for the production asset, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Plans are said to be at an early stage and could yet be derailed by rocky market conditions, but there is hope that All3Media can fetch more than £1B ($1.2B).
All3Media, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Liberty Global had no comment.
All3Media is one of the UK’s most prestigious production groups, boasting around 50 production labels that make shows including The Tinder Swindler and upcoming Netflix show Squid Game: The Challenge.
The company has been under Discovery and Liberty Global’s control for nearly a decade after selling to the U.S. media giants for £500M in 2004. Discovery merged with Warner Bros. last year.

It’s slightly ironic that Tinder has chosen London’s creative neighborhood of Shoreditch as a key target for its first global ad campaign, splashing some major spend on scores of bold, brightly colored billboards asserting that it all “starts with a swipe.” Although the area’s demographic — hectic, switched-on 20- and 30-somethings forever glued to their phones and laptops — would seem the perfect audience, it’s unlikely that many realize that just around the corner from the hoardings sits the company responsible for making the dating app’s most notorious swiper globally famous.
Raw, the production banner that now sits over three busy floors of an otherwise unremarkable office block on Curtain Road — once home to the U.K.’s earliest theaters (Shakespeare would perform many of his plays nearby) — had had numerous hits before The Tinder Swindler dropped on Netflix in February 2022. But the feature documentary — unraveling the...

“Those About to Die,” AGC Television’s upcoming gladiator series from Roland Emmerich, stars Anthony Hopkins and boasts a cast drawn from across Europe and the Middle East. It’s also financially innovative.
Rather than rely on a single, deep-pocketed streamer to write the check for the pricey series, budgeted at $145 million for the first season, AGC adopted a split rights structure: U.S. rights are licensed to Peacock, European rights to Hep, the Herbert Kloiber Sr./Constantin joint venture, and AGC International distributing in the rest of the world.
AGC chairman and CEO Stuart Ford takes pride in proving the naysayers wrong with financing for the project set in ancient Rome and based on Daniel P. Mannix’s book of the same name.
“We’ve assembled the show’s financing through a complex and innovative web of rights deals, banking arrangements and soft money,” Ford says. “We also assembled...
