Microsoft has started to roll out a new “background removal” tool in its Paint app on Windows 11 Insider builds. With this tool, users will be able to remove the background from any picture with the click of a button. The new version is presently rolling out to Windows 11 Insiders in the Dev and Canary channels.
“With this update, we are introducing background removal! With background removal, you can now remove the background of any image automatically in just one click leaving a smooth cutout of the subject. Background removal can detect the subject from the entire canvas or from a selection using the selection tool,” Microsoft said in a blogpost.
To use the new tool, users will need to paste or import content onto the canvas and then, in the toolbar, click the new remove background button to remove the background from your entire image. They can also use the...

San Francisco, Aug 23 (Ians) Microsoft is reportedly working to bring new artificial intelligence (AI) features to applications like Paint and Photos on Windows 11.
For the Photos app, the tech giant is developing an AI feature that would let the app recognise individuals or objects in pictures and enable users to copy and paste those parts in other places, reports Windows Central.
According to the sources, the company wants to integrate optical character recognition (Ocr) technology in the Snipping Tool to enable Windows to identify text in screenshots for faster clipboard copying.
Also, the company is expected to bring Ocr to the Camera app to allow users to select text in a photo captured on the device.
For the Windows 11 Paint app, the company is expected to release a feature that would allow users to ask Paint to create a canvas based on criteria given by them.

Rolling Stones rocker Mick Jagger marked turning 80 this week with a star-studded bash in London, but he reportedly stayed only for an hour, leaving revellers including bandmate Ronnie Wood, and Leonardo DiCaprio, to dance the night away without him.
The party was held at the Embargo Republica Club in Chelsea, west London.
The others at the party included rocker Lenny Kravitz, ‘Barbie’ actress Margot Robbie, Anjelica Huston and Baz Luhrmann, his daughters Jade and Georgia Jagger, and partner Melanie Hamrick.
“Mick’s big party was going off from 11 p.m. and it was the place to be,” a source told The Sun.
“It was a very starry affair with everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, and Lenny Kravitz, turning up to enjoy some drinks.”
Despite the A-list attendees, Mick apparently arrived late to his own celebrations and only stayed for an hour.

Paint is a film written and directed by Brit McAdams starring Owen Wilson.
It is a comedy that boasts the flag of quirkiness, and, in its 60s hippy vibes, it is attractive… for a while.
One of those comedies that, unfortunately, runs out of fuel in its initial approach without having a clear idea to develop.
Paint Movie review
There’s some charm to it as a nostalgic product and as a chance to recall for a while the times in which Forrest Gump found love… to the rhythm of Dolly Parton. It has some style regarding the recreation more than in the interpretation or the story, which don’t want to be memorable at any time.
This film has the dubious merit of being told as it renders the life of this painter, something that ends apparently without leaving any trace, transitioning between light comedy and an acid sense...

Owen Wilson hopes that the new Nancy Meyers movie can be released in cinemas. The 54-year-old actor is one of several stars attached to the film 'Paris Paramount' and hopes that Warner Bros. stepping in to acquire the project means it is released on the big screen.Nancy had been due to helm the romantic comedy - which will also feature Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Michael Fassbender - for Netflix before the streaming giant pulled the plug after the two parties failed to agree on a budget for the picture.Owen told The Hollywood Reporter: "Originally, it was intended as a streaming movie, but now maybe it'll be theatrical (with Warner Bros.), and that seems like what you would want and expect from a Nancy Meyers movie."The 'Paint' star revealed some of the discussions he had with 'The Parent Trap' director...

After Netflix and Nancy Meyers parted ways last month on the filmmaker’s comeback project over budgetary issues, Warner Bros. swooped in to start conversations. Though a deal hasn’t been confirmed, all signs point to a potential theatrical release, with A-listers Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson on board to star.
When THR bumped into Wilson at the premiere of his film Paint, the actor was optimistic. “Originally, it was intended as a streaming movie, but now maybe it’ll be theatrical [with Warner Bros.], and that seems like what you would want and expect from a Nancy Meyers movie,” relayed the actor, who opened up briefly about his conversations with Meyers before signing on.
“She just loves movies, and that’s what makes it fun — talking with her about the way this movie will look and the references for it through some of the older movies that she loves that I also love.

The brothers Mario held onto the top spot of the box-office weekend by a wide margin as The Super Mario Bros. Movie bested the second-place film by $77.8 million this weekend.
Adding $87.0 million in its second weekend of release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie easily retained control of the top ten this weekend as it lifted its two-week total to $347.8 million. Debuting in a very distant second place was The Pope’s Exorcist with $9.2 million in its first weekend in release. This dropped John Wick: Chapter 4 to third place where it added $7.9 million over the weekend to bring the film’s four-week total to $160.1 million. In fourth place, the second debut of the weekend, Renfield, managed to bite off $7.8 million over its first weekend in release. This was good enough to best Air which took in $7.7 million over its second weekend and was pushed to a fifth-place finish by newcomer Renfield.

Easter hasn’t always been a great time to release movies, compared to March when the advent of spring break for many schools has made it an ideal spot for studios to release their family films, outside the usual summer and holiday school breaks. But that’s no longer the case thanks to the various box office records set this weekend by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
In some ways, Universal was the first studio to really capitalize on the Easter weekend by releasing “Furious 7” there in early April 2015; its follow-up “The Fate of the Furious” also did very well there two years later. That was probably why Universal scheduled Illumination and Nintendo’s “The Super Mario Bros.” to be released into 4,343 theaters on the Wednesday before the weekend, something that really paid off. So far, it has grossed $204.6 million in just its first five days, putting it just...

Oscilloscope Laboratories’ Cannes Jury Prize Winner and Independent Spirit international film winner Joyland led New York’s Film Forum to one of its biggest opening weekends for a foreign language film in nearly a decade, taking in north of $21k on one screen, the distributor said. Buoyed by strong reviews and strategic marketing, the film by Saim Sadiq sold out nine showtimes, with the theater adding additional shows.
The first Pakistani film to officially compete at Cannes it screened in Un Certain Regard winning the Jury Prize then playing at TIFF, Sundance and New Directors/New Films. The animated adaptation of a 40-year-old video game provided the best-yet argument that movie theaters are on the road to a real recovery. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) grossed $146.4 million this weekend and $204.6 million in its first five days. All told, this weekend grossed an estimated $207 million.
Here’s what’s really impressive: This film had fewer premium screens and only 16 percent of attendees purchased child-price tickets. All told, over 20 million people in the U.S./Canada paid to see Illumination’s latest animated feature this weekend and it’s already within $10 million of the total domestic gross of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney) — currently, the biggest gross among 2023 releases.
We haven’t seen a film (over)perform like this in years. It’s not a critical favorite (47 on Metacritic), but brand appeal meant tracking and pre-sales were high; it was also the first wide family release since...

Owen Wilson is back, with brushes, as the longtime host of a beloved but fading Burlington, Vermont-based PBS instructional art show. Paint from IFC Films opens Friday on 800-plus screens.
Public television is always ripe for parody and happens to be a world Wilson knows. His father Robert Wilson helped launch, and ran, Dallas PBS station Kera. (He also introduced Monty Python’s Flying Circus to public television.)
Paint director Brit McAdams tells Deadline said that his own after-school TV ritual, General Hospital, would often segue into PBS host Bob Ross’ The Joy of Painting. Ross is a loose inspiration for Wilson’s character, Carl Nargle, in the look at least, from permed hair, denim-on-denim wardrobe and dulcet tones that impressed McAdams and a global fan base.

The inspiration for Owen Wilson’s character in his new movie, Paint, is pretty on the nose (no Owen Wilson pun intended). The real-life artist figure Bob Ross, who had a popular art show on PBS in the 70s, had gained a newer pop culture status in recent years after fans reminisced about his unshakably calm and happy demeanor while showcasing his effortless talent at making amazing landscape paintings. What is equally iconic is his retro fashion that, even though it’s a look that never progressed beyond the 70s, has now become just as synonymous with this fascinating man.
In Entertainment Weekly, Wilson talks about taking up the Bob Ross persona. He actually has personal connections to the painter as his father was a TV executive who worked at a PBS station in his native city of Dallas in the 70s. “I remember, as a kid, my mom taking...

Chicago – The newly released “Paint” film offers an amiable enough premise that’s amusing in a two minute trailer, but entirely out of gas 20 minutes into the story, and then plods around for a whole other hour. While it’s hard to hate it, but I don’t think my time was very well spent either.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Owen Wilson stars as Carl Nargle, the host of a popular daytime painting show on PBS station in Vermont. He’s the tiny station’s biggest star, and acts like an entitled 1970’s rock star … back when mellow hairy dudes were cool variety, only now with a staff of now middle aged groupies. Chief among them is the Nargle’s former flame, Katherine (Michaela Watkins.) She effectively runs the station, and has watched the permed painter take thousands of viewers to his “special little place,” while still nursing some old breakup wounds.

Channel-surfing may be a nostalgic pastime these days, but those who experienced the mindless boredom of finding “nothing on TV” will probably recall the most compellingly boring show ever: “The Joy of Painting” with Bob Ross. With his signature curly brown afro and soothing voice, Ross was a fixture on PBS and of many a rainy afternoon. Though new episodes stopped airing in 1994, the late painter reached sustained notoriety through international reruns, Twitch streams, a Netflix deal, and a YouTube channel. In 2021, Netflix released a documentary about his life, “Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed.”
A new fictional film plays on Ross’ pop culture icon status without using his name or any particular details of his life, instead trading on his distinctive look and the public television painting show setting. Written and directed by Brit McAdams (“Tosh.0”), “Paint” stars Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle, a revered painter with a...

Let’s be clear about one thing: Owen Wilson is not playing Bob Ross. He’s just a guy named Carl Nargle, who hosts a popular PBS painting show called Paint with Carl Nargle, filmed in a small American town — Burlington, Vt., not Muncie, In. — that has made him a celebrity. The fact that he has a luscious perm, just like the Joy of Painting creator? Totally a coincidence. And that his program is little more than him instructing viewers how to paint pictureseque landscapes of tranquil lakes and friendly trees,...

Thank God for Owen Wilson. Without the star’s laconic, laid-back comedic approach to character, his new film Paint would be strictly a by-the-numbers comedy affair. Even with Wilson offering his all as Carl Nargle, a local Public Television star in Burlington, Vermont, whose time in the spotlight he has always held is fading quickly, Paint seems like a missed opportunity.
Fortunately writer-director Brit McAdams has Wilson to hold it together with a sterling, mostly female supporting cast delivering the goods as well. It’s not enough, though, in a largely witless indie enterprise shot in 20 days during the pandemic.
Nargle is inspired by PBS star Bob Ross, with full-on mop of permed hair and signature pipe, who held forth with his modest show in which in made instant art by painting landscapes and inviting the television audience to paint along with him as he offered soft, Mister Rogers-style advice.

Plot: Carl Nargle, Vermont’s #1 public television painter is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke… until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.
Review: When the first photos of Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle hit the internet, I knew that Paint was a movie I needed to see. The trailer made the movie out to be a quirky comedy in the vein of Wes Anderson’s films, and the finished product is not far off of that mark. With a sweet demeanor and a solid cast of comedic actors, Paint is very much like the art the main characters create in the film: nice but also very generic. There is nothing inherently wrong with Britt McAdams’s film. Still, it never embraces the oddity of the subject matter enough to make it stand out from the...

Everybody loves Bob Ross. For more than 10 years, the soft-spoken, big-haired artists came into people's homes via PBS and taught "The Joy of Painting." The paintings Ross created were not exactly awe-inspiring, but they were pretty enough. However, it was Ross' built-in Asmr skills that truly entranced viewers — we couldn't get enough of his whispery voice talking about "happy little trees." So great was Ross' power that his legend lives on long after his death — people still flock to YouTube to watch low-def videos of his old shows.
But what if Bob Ross was a cynical, washed-up womanizer? Would you like to see a movie about that? The makers of "Paint" sure hope so! Written and directed by Brit McAdams, "Paint" provides us with a portrait of Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson), a Bob Ross clone who is much loved as the host of Vermont's number-one painting show. What could the future possibly hold for an artist if they have grown too comfortable with success? If they have stayed put in that snug place of glory, but the times have moved on fast without them? These are the hefty considerations at the heart of “Paint,” a slight comedy that sadly embraces neither the worthwhile questions that surround its central premise nor the story’s dark humor potential.
That’s too bad, because writer-director Brit McAdams’ narrative feature debut is rooted in a genuinely fascinating subject that apparently served as an inspiration for “Paint.” McAdam’s muse is Bob Ross, a real-life American public television mainstay of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Being the host of a successful PBS show called “The Joy of Painting” during that time, Ross built a loyal audience who loved and were mesmerized by his soothing voice, and even haunted by his creative process and ease with a brush,...

Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson), the amusingly ironic hero of “Paint”, hosts a one-man instructional painting show that gets broadcast live out of the PBS station in Burlington, Vermont. Each afternoon, Carl appears on camera for one hour, puffing on his pipe, holding his brushes and palette as he dashes off an oil painting of a local wilderness setting, explaining all the while, in the unruffled monotone of a stoned hypnotist, how you too can get to a “special place” just by painting what’s in your heart.
Carl himself seems nearly as much of an art object as his canvases of Mt. Mansfield, the Vermont peak he has begun to paint with Ocd frequency. He wears the same denim Western shirts, fuzzy beard and ash-blond Afro that he’s been sporting since 1979. He’s a relic: the landscape painter as Fred Rogers for adults, a kind of soft-rock guru from...

What if genial TV painter Bob Ross was actually a serial philanderer with an obsessive need to be accepted by the art community? This seems, on paper, like an interesting concept for a film. Considering that Ross has enjoyed a revitalization during the pandemic, perhaps now is the time to interrogate his life and legacy. However, despite sporting a pretty wonderful wig and reenacting his mannerisms, Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson) is not Ross, and Brit McAdams’ feature debut “Paint” is not a biopic of everyone’s favorite former PBS employee.

If you’ve seen promos for Paint, you’ve probably figured out that Brit McAdams’ comedy starring Owen Wilson is inspired by Bob Ross, the artist who hosted the low-fi PBS series The Joy of Painting for many years before succumbing to lymphoma at age 52 in 1995. Creating landscape paintings in under 30 minutes, Ross was an unwitting progenitor of Asmr, with his endlessly laid-back demeanor, his soft speaking style and his soothing manner that exuded a sort of hypnotic calm. He was also a distinctive visual presence with his impossibly large permed hair, thick beard and mustache, invariably dressed in jeans and a light-colored shirt.
As Carl Nagle, who hosts a Vermont public television show about painting, Wilson channels Ross’ distinctive persona not only visually but also spiritually. The casting feels dead-on, since Wilson has made a career specialty of playing laid-back, slightly dazed characters who seem stoned out of their minds even while perfectly sober.

The past decade has seen a lot of weird cultural trends, but few were harder to predict than the unlikely reemergence of Bob Ross.
The painter, who hosted the instructional art show “The Joy of Painting” on PBS from 1983 until his death in 1994, doesn’t exactly seem like the kind of celebrity who would find an audience in today’s fast-paced world. Each episode of his show featured him leisurely painting a picture while offering words of encouragement to his viewers. It was soothing background noise at the time, but aspiring artists can now find much more efficient videos on YouTube and MasterClass.
Yet the Internet — which in theory should have been the invention that erased Ross’ legacy — ended up being the very thing that made him relevant again. The 2010s were the decade of the Bob Ross vibe shift, with nostalgic memes turning the unapologetically sincere painter into a...

Let’s just add a happy little actor over here and maybe a touch of afro up there on the head…In his latest movie, Paint, Owen Wilson plays Carl Nargle, a character directly influenced by Bob Ross, who hosted The Joy of Painting from 1985-1994. To get into character, Wilson zeroed in on what made Ross so special in the world of public television.
Bob Ross’ distinct look of afro and beard was something that Owen Wilson and the Paint team had to nail. And in it, Wilson wears a wig that helped him channel the beloved painter and will make audiences go Wooowwww. “I did like a little painting before to just see what it felt like. Owen Wilson once received the best gift any Rolling Stones fan could ever wish for — an all-access backstage pass that was his to keep forever. But, after just one night of using the VIP laminate, things quickly went south and his pass was revoked.
Wilson recalled what went down while appearing on “The Late Late Show” earlier this week.
“I went to see the Rolling Stones in Argentina,” the actor, 54, told host James Corden and fellow guest Jeff Goldblum, “and I was kinda friendly with some of the band, and my friend was really good friends with Mick Jagger. And we got these special laminates, kind of all-access, that were good for the rest of your life…”

Owen Wilson was once honored with an all-access pass to attend any Rolling Stones show — a full circle moment, since he saw the legends perform at his first ever concert in 1980. Unfortunately, as he told James Corden and Jeff Goldblum on The Late Late Show, his Stones privileges were revoked a day later when he accidentally wandered on stage during the band’s set.

The first season of Loki helped introduce audiences to the Time Variance Authority, the Multiverse, and of course, Johnathan Majors as He Who Remains. These elements have become quite important to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving fans anxiously awaiting the second season of the series. Brit McAdams had an idea, one best explained by a couple of questions.
“What if an artist, someone like a Bob Ross, had a lot of power but didn’t use that power for good? What if that person, seemingly the nicest, most polite person on TV, maybe even the world, was not what they seemed when cameras stopped rolling?” the writer-director explained to The Hollywood Reporter while standing on the red carpet outside L.A.’s Theatre at Ace Hotel on Thursday night.
That served as the blueprint for his “silly, fun” new film Paint starring Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle, a wig-wearing, Bob Ross-inspired painter who unravels when a younger artist turns up, charms his circle and threatens his run as the No. 1 painter on public television in Vermont.

Get ready to paint some happy little trees with Bob R -- er, Carl Nargle. The latest trailer for the upcoming Owen Wilson film "Paint" just dropped, and the new movie seems to be doing for kitschy PBS painter Bob Ross what Showtime's "Kidding" did for Mr. Rogers. Namely, "Paint" centers on the behind-the-scenes turmoil in the life of a beloved, sweet public figure who played a formative role in the lives of several generations. In this case, the subject is a Ross-like character named Carl, played by Wilson in a permed wig. Armed with a paintbrush and a dulcet voice, Carl takes the world by storm with his paint-a-long programming.
"Paint" comes via IFC Films and is the narrative feature directorial debut for Brit McAdams, who also wrote the film. "Casual" actor Michaela Watkins, "Barry" supporting player Stephen Root (who's having a big day for trailers), "The Goldbergs" star Wendi McLendon-Covey,...

"Don't let fame bring out the worst in you." IFC has revealed full-length official trailer for the film Paint, from writer / director Brit McAdams. This looks like it should be an absolute delight - really looking forward to it. Owen Wilson stars as Carl Nargle, Vermont's #1 public TV painter who's convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, fans hanging on his every stroke... until a younger, better artist steals takes it all from Carl. He soon finds himself in a rut, and the station isn't pulling in ratings. So when they hire a new painter to revitalize the channel, Carl's own fears regarding his talents are brought to the forefront. The film's cast includes Stephen Root, Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Lusia Strus, Lucy Freyer, and Ciara Renée. I adore Bob Ross, so I hope this doesn't smear him... but it also seems like an entirely different story.

The hook of IFC’s “Paint” seems to be “What if Bob Ross was challenged for public broadcasting painting supremacy by a younger and, yes, more inclusive artist?” Think “All About Eve” or “Showgirls,” in this case offering a set-in-their-ways veteran on-television painter and art instructor being usurped by a younger, more exciting upstart.
Owen Wilson isn’t literally playing late painter Bob Ross, who died at the age of 52 in 1995. However, at least some of the comedy offered up in the latest trailer for “Paint” is contingent upon audiences being somewhat aware of the beloved, soft-spoken artist. The hair, the gee-whiz sentiment and the soft color palette are all clear as crystal.
The only thing anointing this film as set in the present day, as opposed to the 1980s or 1990s, is a brief reference to an Uber. Well, that and an apparently intimate moment between Renée and Michaela Watkins.
