Leslie K. Barry’s upcoming novel “Newark Minutemen” has been optioned by Fulwell 73, the independent production company behind “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” John Niven and Nick Ball are attached to pen the screenplay.
“Newark Minutemen” is based on an incredible true story. It centers on a Jewish boxer who goes undercover for the mob and FBI to fight fascism in New Jersey during the Great Depression. His mission takes place as a substantial portion of the American public was pushing neutrality as Hitler consolidated power in Europe. In this chaotic time, he joins the Newark Minutemen, a band of other Jewish boxers, who rose up to fight a Nazi shadow party that was emerging in the States. The novel is based on the real-life experiences of author Leslie K. Barry’s uncle, a Newark Minuteman boxer, and was pieced together from first-hand accounts from her 93-year old mother and her cousin,...

Paz Vega is set to join Jeremy Renner in the upcoming Kill the Messenger , says a story at The Hollywood Reporter . The film is based on the true story of journalist Gary Webb, a San Jose Mercury News reporter who allegedly committed suicide after being the target of a smear campaign when he linked the CIA to a scheme to arm Contra rebels in Nicaragua and import cocaine into California. Peter Landesman wrote the screenplay, based on the two books the studio optioned: "Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion," by Webb, and Nick Schou's "Kill the Messenger: How the CIA's Crack-Cocaine Controversy Destroyed Journalist Gary Webb." Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" What's It About? A stuffy fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) is sent on the bizarre mission to bring the sport of fly-fishing to Yemen, all paid for by a sheik. See It Because: This is about as far from your typical rom-com as you can get. A pleasant surprise from beginning to end, the movie is funny, charming and not derivative at all. We also reveled in the comedic performances of Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas. (Also Available on Redbox | Amazon Instant Video) Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "Singin' In the Rain" 60th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition What's It About? The beloved Gene Kelly-starring musical concerns a blossoming Hollywood romance between a leading man and a chorus girl, amidst the transition from silent films to "talkie" pictures. Edit: I screwed up, I previously had 21 Jump Street on the list, but it doesn't come out until next week. Sorry for the confusion. Jeff, Who Lives at Home A very good movie with an ending that comes out of nowhere and really hits home. The Duplass brothers are, for me, a bit hit and miss, but this was a definite hit.
Wanderlust And here we have a complete misfire. A film sold as a comedy, but it forgot to make us laugh.
Big Miracle I never saw this film, but based on the trailers it looked like a harmless feature that probably would have been better served premiering on Animal Planet than in theaters. Based on the $20 million it made at the theater its receipts seem to agree.
Lockout Lockout is finally where it belongs, on DVD and Blu-ray. This is exactly the kind of film you're looking for...

21 Jump Street I know a lot of people are really high on this movie, but the third act is such a misfire I can't give it my full support. Why make such a funny and inventive comedy only to depend on sentimentality and a cliched gross-out joke in the end, both of which are counter-intuitive to everything that was done leading up to those points? That said, I still think you should give this film a watch, but I just don't see it as a buy unless you plan on watching the first 75% and then stopping it after that each time.

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "The Fp" What's It About? In a hyper-ridiculous society that bares a few similarities to our own, a mysterious eye-patch-wearing hero battles evil gang leaders in "Dance, Dance Revolution"-style combat where only one man walks away. See It Because: Is it cheesy? Absolutely. Is it technically good? Not really. But an over-the-top midnight movie like this is perfect for a get-together with friends. Moviefone's Blu-ray Pick of the Week "Evita," "Newsies," and "Sister Act 1" & "2" Anniversary Editions What's It About? Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol It makes me a little sad I don't really care whether I own Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol or not. It had a few moments I enjoyed, but the film overall was good enough for a one time watch and that's about it. And this is coming from someone that enjoys watching all three of the previous Mission films. Speaking of which, you know you could just buy the first three on Blu-ray for $29.49 and skip the fourth altogether. If I didn't already own the Blu-ray trilogy that's what I would do. And if you wanted to do that, just click here and do it. I support you 100%.
Shame I've watched it twice and it is a great movie, but not exactly one that needs to be part of a home movie collection. Steve McQueen's films just don't scream out for you to watch them again,...

This summer marked what was very likely the last time that actor, Daniel Radcliffe would play the character he's best known for by fans all over the globe, Harry Potter. The series came to a close with 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2,' and from its end comes a new chapter in the career of Radcliffe. The next time you see him in theaters will be when he's being haunted by 'The Woman in Black.' The ghastly tale looks like one of those unabashedly serious horrors that go without a single moment of levity. View the brand-new teaser trailer for it below, courtesy of Yahoo, but first, the very straight-to-the-point synopsis. It reads: "A young lawyer (Radcliffe) travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals." Along with Radcliffe in the film is Ciarán Hinds, who...

Ah, I do enjoy a good "Hijinks Ensue" movie. You know, take a simple premise and follow it with "and hijinks ensue." Such is the case with Cat Run, a film with a bizarre cast that combines several no-names or lesser-knowns, D.L. Hughley doing what appears to be his Boxing Helena impression, Shooter McGavin Christopher McDonald, Eurotrip's Scott Mechlowicz (who apparently still doesn't know,) and of course, Paz Vega.
Cat Run is directed by John Stockwell, who has one of the weirdest resumes I've ever seen -- his directorial credits include Blue Crush and Turistas, two films I never expected to type into the same sentence. I don't know that it looks good, but it kind of looks fun, which is its own kind of good.
Here's the trailer:...

Jane Eyre and Win Win each underwent significant expansion over the weekend, yielding solid results though their long-term prospects remained murky. Meanwhile, a large slate of new releases was for the most part unsuccessful. Jane Eyre doubled its theater count to 180 and grew 25 percent to $1.22 million. Its per-theater average of $6,751 was its lowest so far, though the average was still high enough to warrant further expansion. In fact, the Michael Fassbender-Mia Wasikowska period drama will look to improve on its $3.5 million total when it adds at least another 40 theaters this weekend. Win Win leaped from 23 locations to 149, which resulted in a 145 percent increase to $1.14 million. Similar to Jane Eyre, the theater average took a drastic hit in the process, decreasing from $20,192 to $7,643. While further expansion plans aren't currently available, the movie is tracking almost identically to Fox Searchlight stable mate 127 Hours, a movie that made its way in...

The joke may be on us this weekend with some notable genre directors diverging from their usual fare of torture porn and destination nightmare. While you'd be wise to stay home and do some spring cleaning, if you do venture out, I suggest sticking to your local art house where you'll find some meatier and darker subject matters like in Foreign Oscar winner In a Better World or David Schwimmer's Trust but you can also have your own little Best of the Director's Fortnight section fest (from last year's Cannes) with the Film Forum commencing it's run on the brilliant The Four Times and Brooklyn's ReRun Theater giving Two Gates of Sleep a one week run release. Little-known fact: The Easter Bunny is an avid box-office watcher, and thanks to the better-than-expected performance of one movie, children can expect a significant increase in chocolate eggs this year. Hop, Universal’s family comedy about the Easter Bunny’s rebellious (and Russell Brand-voiced) teenage son, sprinted ahead of the competition with $38.1 million, according to studio estimates. If the estimate holds (and that’s a big if), the film will have scored the best opening weekend of the year so far, passing Rango by about $39,000. Hop was made for $63 million by the production company Illumination Entertainment, which is now...

Three major wide releases hit this weekend - a family comedy, a supernatural thriller, and a sci-fi action tale.
Leading the pack amongst the critics is "Source Code" with an 88% and 7.4/190 on Rotten Tomatoes and a 74/100 on Metacritic - making the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller the second most well-received wide release in cinemas this year so far, behind only "Rango".
After a great reception in Toronto last year, James Wan's "Insidious" has hit a mixed but still decent reaction amongst critics (a group usually very harsh on horror films) - boasting a 59% and 5.6/10 Rt score, along with a 52/100 on Mc.
The dud this week is "Hop", the part-cg animated comedy featuring James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand. It scored just 24% and 4.3/10 on Rt and only a 41/100 on Mc. Yet like most family films, it's likely to win the weekend at the box-office.

The dud this week is "Hop", the part-cg animated comedy featuring James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand. It scored just 24% and 4.3/10 on Rt and only a 41/100 on Mc. Yet like most family films, it's likely to win the weekend at the box-office.
Also in limited release comes the...

Paz Vega: The Cat’S MEOWBy Alex Simon
Spanish actress Paz Vega first gained international attention with her smart, sexy turn in Julio Medem’s Sex and Lucia (2001), as a free-spirited young woman who finds personal liberation through a torrid affair after the loss of her boyfriend. The film’s lush visuals (which included Vega’s incandescent beauty) and sexual frankness raised eyebrows and heart rates in filmgoers everywhere. Vega soon found herself one of Europe’s biggest stars, appearing in over 30 productions, including Almodovar’s Talk to Her (2002), and making her American debut in James L. Brooks’ serio-comedy Spanglish (2004).
Born in Seville January 2, 1976, Paz Vega was fascinated by the movies from a young age. Inheriting a theatrical flair from her father, a former bullfighter, she cut her teeth on Spanish television in the late 1990s before landing her first feature role in Zapping (1999). Married to Venezuelan businessman Orson Salazar,...

The baseball season has begun, but the weather in most of the country still frustratingly refuses to move forward into actual spring. That's why this weekend might be best spent at your local cinema, and luckily there are plenty of options at your disposal. In addition to some still-around must-sees like "Jane Eyre" and "Rango," there is a lot opening this weekend. You could check out the haunted house movie "Insidious," which is directed and written by the team of James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the creators of the first "Saw" flick. There's also "Super," the dark indie action comedy featuring "The Office" star Rainn Wilson as a wannabe masked hero. Another option is "Hop," the animated adventure starring Russell Brand as the Easter Bunny. And if you're tastes are extra-indie, there's the action comedy "Cat Run," the devastating cyber-stalking flick "Trust," the Mexican circus documentary "Circo" (which features music...

John Stockwell's movies as a director pop and fizzle like the sensation of opening a soda can. He's focused primarily, almost cynically, on the youth market, with films like "Blue Crush" and "Turistas" exploring the exoticism of sensual, almost exclusively American youthful exuberance. Unfortunately, the budgets and grosses have shrunk, and Stockwell finds himself on the periphery of a filmmaking culture, as someone who makes punchy cinematic candy that no one wants to consume. As such, the Montenegro-set "Cat Run" serves as a change of pace, offering Stockwell a chance to reinvent himself as an action filmmaker. Instead of the…...

We've got a wide variety of movies hitting theatres this weekend with major releases that include Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal, the Easter-themed animated comedy Hop starring Russell Brand, and James Wan's latest horror flick Insidious. The King's Speech is also re-entering theatres with a brand new PG-13 cut, and I'm sure it will make absolutely no difference to anyone. In limited release, look for James Gunn's Super starring Rainn Wilson, French killer tire movie Rubber, and David Schwimmer's Trust, along with action-comedy Cat Run starring Paz Vega. Before a recent screening of “Cat Run,” the producer came out and said, “All I ask is that if you hate it, really hate it.” With that kind of caveat, the audience prepared itself to hate everything about the film.
The premise is simple: High-end prostitute (Paz Vega) witnesses a massacre of her fellow sex workers and procures the evidence to indict several high-ranking government officials of various nations. Two goofy private investigators (Scott Mechlowicz and Alphonso McAuley), looking for their first job, try to find her while a highly effective hit man is also hot on her trail. One thing leads to another, and all hell breaks loose.

I just saw a commercial for something called Cat Run, opening tomorrow (April 1), and I was somewhat taken aback because (a) the commercial was on Espn and (b) it opens tomorrow and I had not heard a word about this movie before seeing the commercial on Espn.
I watch a lot of television, but I rarely watch Espn. Yet, for all the hours spent in front of the flat screen, watching every other freakin' channel available, I catch the trailer for Cat Run in the 5 minutes spent watching sports news. The producers are obviously seeking a very specific demographic. To extend the sports theme the producers seem to favor: Red Flag.
Based on the trailer, Cat Run appears to be a smart, likeable action romp reminiscent of Guy Ritchie's better work. From what I can tell, the story involves two inept, long-time buddies who decide to become private detectives...

Peter recently ran the pretty cool-looking poster for Cat Run in Page 2. At the time we knew little about the film, which stars Paz Vega as a call girl on the run because a whole bunch of people want a hard drive that is in her possession. Now there is a trailer for the film and after watching it, I still don't know much about the film beyond the sentence that precedes this one. What Cat Run seems to offer is a would-be comedic action chase in which a whole bunch of people want what Paz Vega has got. No, not in that way. But the trailer felt like a huge reach to me -- the comedy doesn't gel, and the whole tone looks off. But this could just be a poorly-cut trailer that really sells the movie short. Oh, and keep an eye out for the misspelled credit cards partway through.
