Baz Lurhmann has written a letter to fans about the cancellation of The Get Down, his Netflix series. My favorite bit because I like having him on the big screen in 2 hour doses:
All sorts of things have been thrown around for the future... even a stage show (can you imagine that? I can, concert version anyone? Next summer? Just saying.) But the simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life. Since The Get Down stopped, I have actually been spending the last few months preparing my new cinematic work...

Manuel is working his way through all the Lgbt-themed HBO productions.
Last week we looked at the recent doc Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures which works as a nice primer on the famed photographer and, as is par for the course for films on gay icons from a certain era, as a portrait of a man working tirelessly to make the most of his ever winnowing time: Mapplethorpe died at age 42 of AIDS complications. We’re not going too far afield this week, as we’re focusing on a documentary on “America’s angriest AIDS activist” in Jean Carlomusto’s Larry Kramer in Love and Anger.
Kramer should be familiar to you. We’ve previously encountered him and talked about his righteous anger when we talked about The Normal Heart, and by that point he had already made HBO appearances in The Out List, Vito, and Outrage. That enough should...

Manuel is working his way through all the Lgbt-themed HBO productions.
Last week we went a bit #Nsfw and looked at six gay sex scenes that ranged from violent/sexy (Oz) to just fully sexy (Looking). This week, we go from the sexually explicit to the (homo)sexually implicit as we turn to The Celluloid Closet and the HBO documentary Vito (Netflix) on the iconic queer film historian, Vito Russo.
“In 100 years of movies, homosexuality has only rarely been depicted on the screen. When it did appear, it was as something to laugh at, or something to pity, or even something to fear. These were fleeting images but they were unforgettable. Hollywood, that great maker of myths taught straight people what to think of gay people. And gay people what to think about themselves. No one escaped its influence.” - Lily Tomlin in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s documentary based on Russo’s work.

Since 1986, San Francisco's Frameline Film Festival has given its Frameline Award to a person or entity who has made a major contribution to Lbgtq representation in film, television, or the media arts. Previous award recipients include film historian, author, and activate Vito Russo, "drag artiste extraordinaire" Divine, producer Christine Vachon, and producer/distributor Marcus Hu. On the opening weekend of Frameline 39, filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz, whose filmography includes documentaries about both Russo ("Vito," 2011) and Divine ("I Am Divine," 2013), joined their ranks. At an emotional ceremony in front of a standing-room-only crowd, the award was presented by noted Bay Area filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, who had employed Schwarz, fresh out of film school, as an intern on their film "The Celluloid Closet," based on Russo's groundbreaking book, in the early 90s. As Friedman noted, it was a grim time in the San...

Actors who are cast in a film together often posses a certain quality or look that make them suitable as co-stars. And in this world of sequels, prequels, remakes, and competing franchises, it can be those same characteristics that also make them fitting for the same roles. Here are ten sets of actors who had played, or ended up playing, the same character as their co-star - but in a different movie (with a couple of television series exceptions):
Vito Corleone - Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando
Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro both earned Oscars for their portrayals of Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather trilogy. Decades later, the two Vito Corleones starred together in the 2001 heist thriller The Score, which was directed by the voice of Yoda himself, Frank Oz — an offer they couldn't refuse, he must have made them.

10. Waterworld
Directed by: Kevin Reynolds
It could be the flop of all flops. At the time, “Waterworld” was the most expensive film ever made. Starring Kevin Costner, “Waterworld” is a science-fiction/fantasy film taking place roughly 500 years after the polar ice caps melted in the beginning of the 21st century, effectively covering the entire world with water. Dirt has become a commodity and an unknown traveler named “the Mariner” (Costner) is trying to find anywhere to trade his stash. The catch: he’s a mutant, with gills, allowing him to breathe underwater. He is joined by a woman named Helen (Jeannie Tripplehorn) and child named Enola (Tina Majorino) with an elaborate map tattooed on her back. They sail the world and encounter various groups of survivors. They are pursued by a group of evil forces, led by an eye-patched man called “the Deacon” (Dennis Hopper). The special effects are actually pretty impressive,...

Deadspin has done a Foia request to get all the complaints the FCC received about Michael Sam kissing Vito when he was drafted. There were only about 20 real complaints, most of them in terrible grammar, and several trying to make it sound like this was worse than the Janet Jackson Nipplegate incident. One complained that their children had never seen anyone, gay or straight kiss before and were traumatized. They probably were traumatized already having never seen any affection in the world. Of course it’s worth noting that Espn is a cable network and could have shown a Michael Sam sex tape on Saturday afternoon and the FCC couldn’t have done anything about it.

Eh? What did he say?
Earlier this week, viewers complained that they couldn't make out half of what was being said in BBC One's new drama Jamaica Inn. A combination of Cornish accents and dodgy sound meant that most of the dialogue went over people's heads. Say what you want about Made in Chelsea or EastEnders, but at least you can follow what's going on.
Turn on the subtitles as Digital Spy takes a look back at some of the most confusing performances from TV and film, whether it was intentional or not.
1. Bane - Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises)
Fans of Christopher Nolan's Batman series were already concerned about Bane after seeing the first trailer. After reassurances that the sound will be altered in time for its full release, we are as confused as ever by what Bane was going on about. We thought Christian Bale's growling Batman was bad enough.

On a quiet street in late-1950′s suburban Baltimore – Baltimore! – an apple-cheeked upper-middle-class family moves in and two young men become neighbors by sheer coincidence. No one in their right mind could have predicted that these two boys would form a friendship that would last decades and unleash onto an unsuspecting public some of the most gloriously perverse collaborations in film history.
Then again, the world had never seen the likes of John Waters and Harris Glenn Milstead before.
The criminally entertaining new documentary I Am Divine yanks the cha-cha heels and wipes the liberally-applied makeup off of one of our true queer pop culture pioneers: Divine. Part drag queen, part vixen, part psychopath, and all woman (well, not quite), Divine subverted pretty much everything Hollywood had to say about women, sexuality, glamor, and common decency. Her face – often made up in garish, twisted masks and screaming to bring the walls down – is known everywhere.

Divine wouldn’t have lasted a single episode on RuPaul’s Drag Race—the 1970s and ’80s drag icon was vulgar, intentionally unattractive and, well, ate dog poop. But she nonetheless paved the way for many queens to come and is a seminal figure in Lgbt entertainment history. A muse to John Waters and star of such seminal queer flicks as Pink Flamingos and Hairspray, Divine (born Glenn Milstead) came from meager beginnings but brought drag to the mainstream in a way no on had before.
I Am Divine, a new documentary from Jeffrey Schwarz (Vito), explores Divine’s origins and evolution, from Waters’ midnight movies and a raunchy cabaret act to chart-topping disco songs and friendships with art stars like Andy Warhol and David Hockney. Divine was even the inspiration for The Little Mermaid‘s Ursula the Sea Witch.
Hmm, maybe she would’ve done well on Drag Race after all.

Written by Lotti Pharriss Knowles and directed by John V Knowles, Chastity Bites is a new horror-comedy that has recently shown to great crowds at film festivals around the world. The husband-wife team has also been involved with Automat Pictures' Jeffrey Schwarz in the production of his last few documentary features, Vito, Spine Tingler: The William Castle Story, and I Am Divine.Chastity Bites is their debut as a writing-directing team, and I'm pretty psyched to see it. If the trailer is to be believed, the film looks to ride the line drawn by films like Cherry Falls, Excision, Teeth, and Saved. This sort of farce addressing moral rigidity is right up my alley. Chastity Bites has already played the Lund Fantastic Film Festival, the Philadelphia...

Says producer and screenwriter Lotti Pharriss Knowles, "Tim Seeley obviously loves genre material and strong female characters as much as we do,...

★★★★☆ Some films, though hard to watch, make enlightening viewing. Vito (2011), the new biographic documentary by director Jeffrey Schwarz about the American film journalist and gay activist Vito Russo, is one such exercise. The film charts Russo's life from his childhood in New Jersey to his role as one of the leading lights at the centre of New York's gay community during the 1970s and 80s. One often has to question what facilitates the wider release of a made-for-tv documentary (as this is), and whether it succeeds in its objectives. Fortunately, as a study of an influential period in the history of cinema the film is fascinating.

Harris Glenn Milstead, professionally known to the world as Divine, was perhaps middle America's first mainstream exposure to a drag queen. I Am Divine is a definitive documentary of Divine's life from his youth growing up in Baltimore to his death in 1988. With this movie, director Jeffrey Schwarz continues his sterling track record of in-depth, fascinating profile films such as Vito and Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story.
Interviews with John Waters, Jayne Mansfield, Tab Hunter, Mink Stole, Bruce Vilanch, Holly Woodlawn, Rikki Lake and finally, Divine himself, paint a fabulous picture of the man inside the dress shedding light on what was, to me, up until now a mysterious personality.
Before watching Schwarz's documentary, I could tell you little more about Divine other than that he was a 300-lb drag queen who once ate a dog turd on camera in John Waters' Pink Flamingos. Now, Divine is a...

Jeffrey Schwarz's is a very busy man. "I am Divine" is his fourth feature documentary in five years. This past summer his last film "Vito" aired on HBO. It was about the beloved gay activist and film scholar Vito Russo, and it comes out on DVD this April. His other films are "Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story," about the prolific Hollywood director who specialized in audience participation gimmicks and "Wrangler: Anatomy Of an Icon," about a 1970s gay porn star who transitioned to straight films and married Margaret Whiting. He has spent the better part of this century making "behind-the-scenes" documentaries and DVD extras stating he's "the guy responsible for all those featurettes, audio commentaries, and other "added value" as the studios like to call it." What it's about: "I Am Divine" is the story of how an overweight, effeminate, bullied Baltimore kid transformed himself into an internationally recognized drag superstar.

You may not know his name, but Jeffrey Schwarz is probably one of the most interesting documentary filmmakers around these days. Schwarz and his company, Automat Films, are behind some of the most fun, entertaining, and engrossing documentaries of the last decade. Automat cut its teeth creating bonus material for DVD in the early 2000's, mainly with Schwarz in the director's chair. In fact, if you dare to peek at his IMDb page, he's got well over 100 titles to his credit. However, interspersed within those films are a few stand-alone features documentaries that are well worth seeking out. Now, the director of Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story, Vito, and Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon needs your help. Schwarz and company have embarked upon creating...

The documentary is about the life and activism of Vito Russo (1946-1990) who was the author of the seminal non-fiction book "The Celluloid Closet" the definitive kick off point to the now robust commonplace conversation about the depiction of Lgbt people in filmed entertainment.

Outfest -- the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival -- is kicking off its 30th anniversary celebrations tomorrow night with a screening of Jeffrey Schwarz's "Vito" and a tribute to the one-and-only John Waters. What will follow is 10 days showcasing the best Lgbt cinema of the past year, which -- in something of a rare occasion -- isn't simply one or two great films and then countless filler. It's been a pretty exceptional year for Lgbt films, and if you're in Los Angeles over the next little bit, Outfest is a pretty great opportunity to see why. Indiewire offers 13 best bets below, though there's also quite a bit more where that came from, so check out the festival's full program here. "Cloudburst," written and directed by Thom Fitzgerald “Cloudburst” comes nearly fifteen years after writer-director Thom Fitzgerald made his directorial debut with “The Hanging Garden.” But unlike...

Growing up in the New York film community, I knew Vito Russo, and read his influential 1981 landmark book about gay images in the media, The Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in Movies, which was revised in 1987 and has never fallen out of print. Russo traveled the world with his "Celluloid Closet" presentations. He would have been 66 on July 11. "A lot has happened since then," says filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz, who worked on HBO's film version of "The Celluloid Closet," and whose HBO documentary, Vito, about the civil rights activist and co-founder of GLAAD who died in 1990, debuted at the New York Film Festival, opens the 30th Outfest on July 12 and launches on HBO July 23. "His message still resonates. His story shows how one person can make a difference. He lived passionately and bravely. He'd be astounded at the truthful images and representations of gay people today, to know that his activism paid off.

After the phenomenal success of last year’s twenty fifth anniversary celebrations, the BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival returns this coming week for its twenty sixth instalment, with another internationally flavoured and diverse line-up. Another day, another trio of announcements from the Berlin International Film Festival (February 9 through 19). First off, this year's Berlinale Camera has been presented to Haro Senft, "one of the pioneers of New German Cinema as well as a tireless advocate of German children films... He was the initiator of Doc 59, a group based in Munich at the end of the 1950s; many of its members went on to sign the Oberhausen Manifesto in 1962." His 1961 documentary short Kahl was nominated for an Oscar and Bruno Ganz gave his first performance in a major role in Senft's first narrative feature, Der sanfte Lauf (1967).
"In 1971 he resigned from all his positions related to film policy and devoted himself unlike anyone else to developing a culture of children's films. With his films Ein Tag mit dem Wind (1978) and Jacob hinter der blauen Tür (1987) he set the standard for the genre." Because Senft can no longer travel,...
