As younger Guinan and Picard walk near 10 Forward, they stop in front of 21st Street Mission, with Floyd's Barbershop seen nearby. Both are locations in The City on the Edge of Forever (1967). Edith Keeler ran the 21st Street Mission, and Floyd's was seen while James Kirk and Keeler take a walk together. The boxing poster to the left of the entrance to Guinan's bar was also seen in that episode. The reason why this storefront appeared in the original ST episode is because it is the same outdoor town set that was being used by The Andy Griffith Show (1960) as the barber shop of regular character Floyd Lawson. This is an easter egg with a double meaning. (Note that this is not the identical filming location as the RKO Forty Acres backlot, which was torn down in the mid-1970s.)
The entrance to Jackson Roykirk Plaza is shown. Jackson Roykirk is the scientist who created the Nomad space probe in The Changeling (1967). Nomad thought Captain Kirk was Roykirk.
This takes place on April 12, 2024, which is four-and-a-half months before the Bell Riots on August 30, 2024 in the Sanctuary District depicted in Past Tense, Part I (1995)/Past Tense, Part II (1995).
A newspaper headline reads "Brynner Fights Unionization." This is most likely a reference to the character Chris Brynner, from Past Tense, Part I (1995)/Past Tense, Part II (1995). Brynner is a businessman who assists Jadzia Dax when she is transported to 2024. The references in Picard to "sanctuary districts" are also a nod to this episode.
The start of the episode has Seven and Raffi arriving at a clinic that Rios was taken to. They were all advised to avoid butterflies, i.e., the butterfly effect: making small changes to the past that could alter the future. At the clinic, Rios does everything they were told not to do in that regard. In this episode when Seven and Raffi arrive at the clinic, there is a drawing of a butterfly on the front door.
Kirk R. Thatcher: as "Mohawk Punk," listening to a boombox on the bus that Seven and Raffi are riding, and appears to be an older version of the same character he played in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). The song he's listening to ("I Still Hate You") is a newer version (possibly sequel) of "I Hate You" from ST4:TVH, with slightly different lyrics: "35 years later and nothing much has changed...". Kirk Thatcher was an Associate Producer on ST4:TVH, wrote and sang both songs. He also played a similar character in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).
