Washington, July 16 (Ians) NASA has selected a new scientific payload to establish the age and composition of hilly terrain created by volcanic activity on the near side of the Moon.
The Dimple instrument suite, short for Dating an Irregular Mare Patch with a Lunar Explorer, will investigate the Ina Irregular Mare Patch, discovered in 1971 by Apollo 15 orbital images.
While some 70 Irregular Mare Patches have been discovered by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Ina remains the largest identified so far.
Learning more about this mound will address outstanding questions about the evolution of the Moon, which in turn can provide clues to the history of the entire solar system, the agency said.
Dimple is part of the Prism (Payloads and Research Investigations on the Surface of the Moon), which sends science investigations to the Moon through a NASA initiative called Clps, or Commercial Lunar Payload Services. The Clps initiative is a...

As TV academy voters fill out their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, they will have to consider 163 shows for Best Drama Series. This is only down by eight compared to last year. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.
2020 and 2022 champ “Succession” is in the hunt for its third win in this category and will potentially only have to fend off two of its seven rivals from last year. “Better Call Saul” and “Yellowjackets” returned in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, while “Euphoria,” “Severance,” “Squid Game,” and “Stranger Things” did not. The last remaining 2022 contender, “Ozark,” officially finished its four-season run last April. Also back in the running are former winners “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2017) and “The Crown” (2021).

Phil Dunster’s Jaime Tartt has finally reached a level of mutual respect with former captain and now coach Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), and their latest adventures in Amsterdam bring the two closer together.
In the sixth episode of the Apple TV+ comedy, AFC Richmond venture to Amsterdam for an exhibition match. Though they lose, Coach Ted (Jason Sudeikis) gives his team a curfew-free night post-match. Roy makes Jamie stick around for training, and Jaime points out all the sights in Amsterdam as they run through the city — including that famous bench shot in “The Fault in Our Stars.”
“Jason and Brendan and Joe Kelly, the creators all lived in Amsterdam for a while so they’re all obsessed with Amsterdam, particularly Brendan is obsessed with the history and architecture and culture there,” Dunster told TheWrap.

Apple TV+ has unveiled the first trailer for “The Last Thing He Told Me,” the limited series based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Laura Dave.
The seven-part drama stars Jennifer Garner (who also executive produces) as Hannah, a woman who starts to question everything when her husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) disappears overnight leaving only a note that reads “protect her.”
“There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for my daughter,” Coster-Waldau’s Owen says when Garner asks what defines him in the beginning of the trailer.

Six full-length albums by Elliott Smith dating back to his teenage years circa 1985 have surfaced online.
As Pitchfork notes, the recently unveiled archive of then-16-year-old Portland, Oregon teenager Steven Paul Smith was painstakingly discovered and distributed by a young Texas fan deep in a years-long pursuit.
Cameron McCrary emailed local Portland record stores and posted entries on Discogs as part of his treasure hunt. Tony Lash, who played drums on several of the records, sold the surviving copies to an Elliott Smith completist. Other recordings trickled out over the course of two years.
All told, the repertoire spans six albums recorded between 1985 and 1989 by Smith and his high school buddies under various band names, including 1985’s Any Kind of Mudhen, 1986’s Still Waters More or Less and 1987’s Menagerie by Stranger Than Fiction; 1988’s The Greenhouse by A Murder of Crows; and 1989’s Trick of Paris Season by Harum Scarum.

Washington, Dec 17 (Ians) NASA has launched the first-ever global satellite mission that will observe nearly all water on Earth’s surface, measuring the height of water in the planet’s lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and the ocean.
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (Swot) spacecraft atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Friday.
“Warming seas, extreme weather, more severe wildfires — these are only some of the consequences humanity is facing due to climate change,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
“The climate crisis requires an all-hands-on-deck approach, and Swot is the realisation of a long-standing international partnership that will ultimately better equip communities so that they can face these challenges,” Nelson added.
The satellite was built by NASA and the French space agency Centre National d’Atudes Spatiales (Cnes). The Swot spacecraft also has contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the UK Space Agency.

Producer of “Something From Tiffany’s” Lauren Neustadter credits costars Kendrick Sampson (“Insecure”) and Zoey Deutch, as well as casting director Ronna Kress, with transforming the story of the film, adapted from Melissa Hill’s book that came out over a decade ago.
“I read it when it was in galley [advanced, not finished format] and it’s a delightful book with an A+ movie premise. I immediately gravitated towards the premise of the book,” Neustadter told TheWrap in a recent interview. “I thought the characters were incredibly charming, but it wasn’t the kind of thing where there was a lot of specificity around the roles and the backgrounds of each of the characters. It was written in a bit of a different moment in time, and so we were imagining the script now, and we were imagining making the movie now. It was just something that I think we wanted to make sure that we were incredibly inclusive.

Our own reviewer Alex Maidy wasn’t very impressed by the Apple TV+ thriller series Surface – you can read his 5/10 review at This Link – but Apple TV+ was clearly pleased with it, as they have officially ordered a second season of the show. Surface season 2 will see Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is also an executive producer on the series, reprising the role of Sophie, a woman who has extreme memory loss after a traumatic head injury. In the first season, set in San Francisco, Sophie seeks to rediscover herself, unearthing sins ranging from an affair to much deeper questions about a hidden past and her true identity. For its second season, the show will be moving to London, where Sophie will find out where she really came from and what made her into the flawed person she is. The mess she left behind in San Francisco, however, will catch up with her.

It has been quite the year for the streaming services. Fresh from the foothold that Covid allowed them to gain, 2022 seemed to be the most important year for streaming so far. [The following story contains spoilers from the first season of Apple TV+’s Surface, including the season one finale, “See You on the Other Side.”]
The first season of Apple TV+’s Surface ends on a cliffhanger, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s main character, Sophie, embracing her past identity as Tess Caldwell and going back to the U.K. in search of Millie Brady’s Eliza, whose bloody face has been haunting Sophie.
While Apple has yet to renew the psychological thriller, showrunner Veronica West says as she was thinking of an ending for season one, she wanted to find a way for the show to move forward.
“There needed to be at least one more chapter to Sophie’s past, and that’s why at the end of the pilot you hear the name Tess for the first time and these memories of Millie Brady’s character continue to surface up, and the reason they do is because that was one of the most traumatic things that happened to Sophie,...

Heading into the season finale of Apple TV+’s mystery-thriller Surface, so many questions remain: Who is Sophie, really? Why did she jump off of that boat? What are her true motivations? Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until a potential Season 2 before we get closer to anything concrete.
But here’s what we do know following the finale (which is now available to stream). James didn’t have anything to do with Baden’s death. That horrific honor goes to the slimy Harrison, who didn’t want Baden’s work to undermine or destroy their beloved firm.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “See You on the Other Side,” the Season 1 finale of “Surface,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
What began with a leap ended with a cliffhanger as Apple TV+’s “Surface” closed out its first season with some good old-fashioned revenge and an enticing tease of the future.
After a season spent piecing together her lost memories after an apparent attempt at suicide by throwing herself off a ship, Sophie Ellis (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) learned she’d never actually intended to kill herself. It was all a calculated ruse to escape back to her old life as Tess Caldwell, a mysterious woman with a past she’s only remembered in bloody flashes.
After discovering she had stolen money from her husband’s firm, and left herself a go-bag in a storage locker that was packed for a return trip to her native London,...

Sophie, Sophie, Sophie.
Or Tess. Or whoever else she decides to be in the future. What a messy, messy web you love to weave.
Surface Season 1 Episode 8 was a twisted hour that finally gave us some closure on many of the first season questions and left the door open for more stories should the series return for a second outing.
This finale caught me off guard when it shouldn't have because the signs were everywhere.
But that means that it was a mystery with layers and complications. For as much as you thought you knew what was happening, there were still a lot of surprises.
Surface Season 1 Episode 6 was the hour that put a lot of things into perspective. That was our first taste of the true Sophie. The one who was headstrong, manipulative, and ambitious. She could weave a tale in minutes if she needed to establish...

Sophie's exploration of her past has devastating consequences in the finale episode of Apple TV+'s new drama Surface, and now, she seems to be struggling with her future as the first season comes to a close. Popsugar has exclusive photos from the final installment of the freshman series' initial outing, including one showing a seemingly contemplative Sophie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) in the bath. A second image features Sophie's husband James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) alone, with San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
Episode seven ended with Sophie distraught after Baden's (Stephen James) death. Viewing the ferry footage he gave her, she learns she wasn't, in fact, pushed from the boat. She's also questioning whether or not James, who knew about Baden and Sophie's relationship, was involved in Baden's death. As Apple TV+ teases in an episode description for episode eight, "Sophie seems to move forward, but...

Snowpiercer may be ending, but Jennifer Connelly has already lined up her next role.
The actress, who appeared in the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick earlier this year, has joined the cast of the Apple TV+ series Dark Matter.
Connelly week star opposite Joel Edgerton on the drama series that will be produced for the streaming service by Sony Pictures Television.
Hailed as one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade, Dark Matter is a story about the road not taken.
The series will follow Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life.
Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived.

Well, I can't say I didn't see this coming.
There are seemingly two sides to every character on this series, and as easy as it is to get sucked into the version of themselves they're presenting to Sophie, everyone's true colors are bound to come out in the end.
Surface Season 1 Episode 7 saw the unraveling of Baden, who was suddenly public enemy number one to Sophie, once she discovered he wasn't being as truthful with her as she believed.
Baden has been pushing his anti-James agenda for a long time, and while perhaps some of it seemed motivated by his feelings for Sophie, he was undoubtedly building a solid case. Even with all signs pointing towards James being red herring, there was no denying the missing money.
But once the true nature of that crime came to light during Surface Season 1 Episode 6, Baden didn't have much of a leg to stand on.

Sophie is still feeling like a stranger in her own life - and the upcoming episode of Apple TV+'s latest drama doesn't seem to be bringing much clarity to "Surface"'s main mystery. In a Popsugar exclusive clip from episode seven of the series, titled "It was Always Going to End This Way," Sophie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and her husband James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) discuss the events of her seeming suicide attempt. The conversation comes after the events of episode six flipped much of what Sophie had assumed to be true on its head.
"I don't know . . . how could I be so wrong about him?" Sophie asks James in the clip. "The things he said to me, they seemed like the answer to the one question I couldn't get out of my head."
Responds James, "What question?" Sophie then poses her query: "What if I didn't jump?"
After James appears shaken by her line of thought,...
